Toyo's Camera...doc featuring internment camp photos (WW II) captures compelling Japanese American stories. @ Laemmle 'til March 12th!

The Laemmle 4 Plex Theatre in Santa Monica is screening a compelling documentary by insightful director Junichi Suzuki (In the Soup; Sundance Grand Jury Prize) which features riveting photos by Toyo Miyatake snapped on the sly inside a World War II internment camp.

Since cameras were prohibited in the nefarious holding facilities, Toyo smuggled a lens inside and built a hand-crafted camera to capture life behind the barbed wires.

During the course of the documentary, thirty individuals share poignant moments from their heartbreaking stories, which are woven into an inspiring tapestry of flashbacks in the form of archival footage.

The five-hundred stills that spring to life onscreen include the works of a handful of Miyatake's mentors and companions - Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, for instance - which have been set against a soundtrack of euphonious music by Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning artist, Kitaro.

Worth the price of admission alone is an end piece by Mike Shinoda from the world-famous rock band Linkin Park.

Shinoda, of Japanese American descent, wrote the piece as a tribute to Miyatake (who is his grandfather).

The documentary screens 'til March 12th at Laemmle 4 Plex (Santa Monica) and at the Aratani Theatre exclusively on March 15th.
