Howard Stern...renews contract with Sirius FM! Shock Jock still relevant?

Oh, that sly devil!

As contract negotiations rolled around, acid-tongued King of Radio shock talk put on his best poker face and fooled the best of 'em.

Although Howard Stern hinted that he might jump the Sirius Satellite Ship - on the premise that he was going to settle back and savor a few unadulterated moments of fun in the sun with his new gal pal - insiders continued to speculate that the irrascible DJ was ready to give iTunes a shot (in the arm or the jugular).

Too racy for those folks?

Some pundits were quick to jump into the fray and say "You betcha!".

On Thursday, though, Stern announced that he renewed his contract.

But, he was not discussing the terms of the pact, no Sir!

One media analyst - Barton Crockett - speculated that the unpredictable star in a galaxy of lesser entertainment & news personas would receive a cool $100 million a year in perks.

If that is true, Stern may have accepted a deal for less than his original contract, since that first outing with Sirius included stock in the company.

Sirius intends to transmit programming from Stern's two current outlets and expand the broadcast material to mobile devices.

When Stern first signed with Sirius - after being fed up with restrictive regulations imposed by the Federal Communications Commission at his former place of employ which fell under their jurisdiction - Sirius was an iffy proposition with 600,000 subscribers.

Today, the subscriptions have ballooned to a staggering 20 million strong.

Some conjecture that Howard Stern is - in large part - responsible for the Satellite Server's success today in the competitive marketplace filled with rich media.

In fact, when Stern announced he re-signed with Sirius, stock rose 7 cents a share to $1.38.

Even still, some pooh pooh the notion that Stern is still a power player on the broadcast terrain.

"He used to be so controversial. And, that's what drove listeners to Sirius FM," some asserted from the sidelines in recent days.

To others, the 57-year-old Stern is currently a former radio whiz kid who has flashed "out" in the past couple of years.

"He still has a large audience, but his relevance has declined," Ryan Schinman (Platinum Rye Entertainment) contends.

Schinman is a Chief Executive at a firm that matches up celebrities for advertising purposes.

"He was in the headlines alot because he was censored.  That's wasn't great for his creative freedom, but at the same time it created controversy that made people want to tune in."

But, in the final analysis - will they still - bed bugs or not?
