Tribeca Film Festival...Brian Williams to interview Robert De Niro! Elton John documentary to screen! April 20th - May 1st in NYC!

To celebrate ten years of screening cutting-edge films, officials at the Tribeca Film Festival have announced they are introducing a thrilling thought-provoking "Talk" series to feature high-profile personalities in the industry.

Brian Williams, Alec Baldwin and Martin Scorsese are slated to conduct one-on-one interviews with the likes of - Robert DeNiro, Doug Liman and Souleymann Cissee respectively - at the much-anticipated Director series to be held in New York City.

The upcoming annual fest - which normally boasts packed houses - runs April 20th through May 1st in lower Manhattan.

In recent days, the organizers have also leaked out details about a handful of dazzling special events, causing a big buzz in show-biz circles.

For instance, Cameron Crowe's documentary on singer - Elton John - premieres at a free outdoor screening on April 20th at the North Cove at the World Financial Plaza.

Attendees will need TFF wristbands to be seated at the event which will be distributed to the public on a first-come first-served basis at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center on April 20 at 4 pm..

"The Union" is a behind-the-scenes snapshot of the "out" Diva - who recently recorded his latest album - as a collaborative musical effort alongside legendary rock 'n roller (and good friend) multi-talented Leon Russell.

Producers are hailing the flick as an extraordinary journey of the heart which captures a "candid portrait" of one of the world's most-treasured enduring artists.

“Cameron Crowe gives audiences unprecedented access to Elton John and Leon Russell’s artistic process in an emotional and realistic way," one festival biggie enthused at a recent press junket.

Award-winning T-Bone Burnett took on the role of studio producer and nurtured the eclectic recording project to completion in recent days.

Lyricist Bernie Taupin, Neil Young, Brian Wilson, legendary R & B organist Booker T. Jones, and steel guitarist Robert Randolph (in addition to a 10-piece gospel choir) are also showcased on the much-touted album.

At press time, it was announced that Elton will take the stage after the screening of the insightful documentary and perform a tune or two with celebrated friends in tow.

"It’s a special opportunity to open our 10th Festival in a distinct and unique way. Not only are we inviting the community to join us for the world premiere of Cameron Crowe’s film - "The Union" - but to have Elton, whose music transcends generations, perform after is an extraordinary gift to our Festival and more specifically the downtown community,” gushed Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Crowe sang Elton John's praises, too.

"As a longtime fan of both artists, it was a pleasure to spend a year filming their collaboration,” said Cameron Crowe.

“We can't wait to show it to one of the greatest audiences in the world at the Tribeca Film Festival," Cameron crowed to all within earshot.

In addition, the "Tribeca Talks" showcase five new documentary titles, which feature lively discussion panels with a spotlight on the likes of actor/director Sean Penn and top vocalist Harry Belafonte, for example.

Five of the documentary titles are - "The Education of Dee Dee Ricks", "Love Hate Love", "Off the Rez", "Grandma, A Thousand Times", and "Sing Your Song "- all of which receive exclusive screenings as part of the Tribeca Talks "After the Movie” series.

Another one-of-a-kind world premiere event will be the screening (and in-depth examination) of the feature L.A. Noire  - which is a new interactive crime thriller being released in the spring by Rockstar Games.

A Q & A will follow a "L.A. Noire" live demonstration of the detective game (where players solve complex, historically-inspired crimes in a beautifully recreated and fully interactive rendition of 1947 Los Angeles).

Tribeca’s special events are rounded out by a handful of Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival screenings which include Alex Gibney’s "Catching Hell" (about notorious Chicago Cubs fan Steve Bartman), free “Tribeca Talks: Industry” panels (designed for industry professionals to explore the ways they can use new digital platforms to advance their film projects) and “Tribeca Talks: Pen to Paper” (which are insightful panels hosted by Barnes & Noble that focus on the artistic process of screenwriting.

“We wanted to celebrate our Tenth Festival by inviting some of the finest filmmakers, media artists and actors of our time to share their insights and experiences through the Tribeca Talks series," underscored Nancy Schafer, the Executive Director of TFF.

“We have over the years established a tradition of conversations that both engage audiences in the details and revelations of contemporary film making as well as offer a perspective as to the direction and the future of storytelling and the industry. This is so much a part of what festivals can do to enrich the viewing experience for their audiences and we are proud to present this special series."

There will be quite a few world premieres to keep film buffs clucking around the circuit, too.

The world premiere of "The Education of Dee Dee Ricks" is a documentary which demonstrates how a successful businesswoman and mother’s life changed when - after being diagnosed with breast cancer - she set out to make life easier for less fortunate cancer patients.

The stirring film is followed by a conversation with Dee Dee Ricks, producer Lisa Cohen, Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention founder Harold P. Freeman MD, and public health advocates.

The event is to be moderated by director Perri Peltz.

"The Beautiful Mind" screening examines the life of Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. and will be followed by a panel discussion puts the glare of the spotlight on director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the film’s math consultant, Dave Bayer, author Sylvia Nasar (whose book inspired the film) and theoretical physicist and mathematician Brian Greene.

The event is slated to be moderated by NPR’s Ira Flatow.

The North American documentary premiere of - "Grandma, A Thousand Times" - examines a family matriarch as she struggles to cope with the silence of her once-buzzing house and imagines what waits her beyond death.

Hosted by the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, it should be noted for the record, that the film won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Film (2010).

The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Mahmoud Kaabour on the experience of making films in the Middle East.

The world premiere of - "Love Hate Love" - is all about the difficult journeys of three families torn apart by three separate acts of terrorism - the attacks on the World Trade Center, the London bus bombing, and the Sari Club bombing in Bali - and is followed by a conversation with executive producer Sean Penn, directors Dana Nachman and Don Hardy (as well family members featured in the film which includes Liz Alderman, Steve Alderman, Esther Hyman, and Ben Tullipan).

The New York premiere of - "The Loving Story" - recounts the unknown love story of Mildred and Richard Loving (the couple behind the 1967 Supreme Court ruling overturning anti-miscegenation laws in the United States).

The stirring legal foray is followed by the appearances of director Nancy Buirski, attorney Phil Hirschkop (who represented the Lovings), Anthony Romero, and the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (who discuss the landmark case and current issues surrounding race and marriage equality).

"Off the Rez" - a world premiere event - tracks Shoni Schimmel (a Umatilla Indian and one of the best high school basketball players in the country) whose hoop dreams of being the first from her tribe to get a college scholarship are threatened after her family leaves the Umatillia Indian Reservation.

The screening is followed by a Q & A with executive producers Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, director Jonathan Hock, Discovery and TLC Networks president Eileen O’Neill.

The special event is moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist - and author of Friday Night Lights - Buzz Bissinger.

The world premiere of - "Revenge of the Electric Car" - is an up-close peak behind the closed doors of - Nissan, General Motors and Tesla Motors - at a time when the major auto makers race to develop the world’s first and most economically accessible electric car.

The screeners are promoting a panel discussion to be headed up by guest speakers director Chris Paine (President and Chief Executive Officer) Nissan Motor Co. Carlos Ghosn, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, and Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal columnist Dan Neil.

The much-anticipated event is moderated by actor, writer, and director David Duchovny.

"Sing Your Song" - a New York premiere offering - is a stirring documentary that examines legendary entertainer Harry Belafonte’s continued humanitarian contributions to the arts, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, the fight against Apartheid, combating starvation in Ethiopia, and so much more.

Harry Belafonte is scheduled to appear for a Q & A with the filmgoers who attend.

Moderated by Tavis Smiley.

To fill out the program, there will also be scintillating screenings of 11 short films which explore the contributions of women filmmakers in the canon of the American experimental avant-garde.

This program also celebrates 15 years of direct financial support for preservation of historically under-recognized films by women through the Women’s Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film & Television.

A discussion follows with an eclectic group of women filmmakers who helped shape avant-garde cinema.

"Digital by Design", meanwhile, focuses on a conversation with producers, filmmakers, SAP and industry executives about the emergence of online digital platforms and applications that provoke filmmakers to confront technology head-on including funding models, intellectual property management and distribution channels.

Sponsored by SAP.

Panelists that night include Richard Whittington, Senior Vice President of media and entertainment at SAP, and writer/director Edward Burns.

"Shooting Film on a Budget" is an interesting presentation on the subject of filmmaking which is understandably sponsored by Kodak.

One of the most important aspects of realizing your independent feature is determining the right look.

How will you capture your images and bring the script to the screen in a meaningful, visual way?

Filmmakers and cinematographers must consider many variables such as mood of the story, production restrictions, post work flow, etc.

Too often these important decisions are determined by the bottom line.

However, many filmmakers are able to get the most out of their budgets while still shooting film.

Kodak invites budding filmmakers to attend this event which features celebrity guests - Michael Cuesta (writer/director of Roadie) and producer Karen Chieto - to learn how they created beautiful and cost-effective cinematic narratives on film.

Also -the "Business of Entertainment" - is expected to draw large crowds.

The program will explore the trends that affect the economics of the film business and the broader entertainment industry.

This year's panel have invited leading CEOs, producers, financiers, media - and other industry leaders - who will focus on how to finance films in the 21st century.

"Are Documentary Films Changing the World?" focuses on - filmmakers, distributors and community groups - and the new trends in documentary filmmaking (such as collaborations between filmmakers and NGOs to increase distribution and influence public perception and policy).

Panelists include filmmaker Abigail Disney - and the Co-Founder of Impact Partners - Dan Cogan.

For the Internet crowd - "Amplify the Message: Social Media" - may be of particular interest.

The panel discussion focuses on how film producers and directors engage new interactive audiences through such networks as Twitter, Facebook, Tumbles, GetGlue and Foursquare (and how much of an impact social networking has on a movie’s success or failure on multiple platforms).

Moderated by Marc Schiller (the CEO and Founder of Electric Artists).

Panelists include Rider Strong, director/screenwriter of The Dungeon Master, Howard Tullman, President & CEO of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, and others.

The conversation will be streamed live on the Tribeca Online Film Festival website.

http://www.tribecaonline.com

Finally - "Meet the Documentary Broadcasters" - is expected to be a spirited conversation with industry broadcasters about the type of nonfiction films they’re drawn to and their thoughts on where this genre is headed.

See 'ya there!

L'AMOUR FOU...Documentary on Yves Saint Laurent & male lover! CAESAR Award-Winning Film!

L'AMOUR FOU was the winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the prestigeous Toronto International Film Festival this past year, and consequently, has been causing quite a buzz on the Festival circuit since winning the CAESAR for Best Documentary.

The documentary, directed by Pierre Thoretton (slated for a release on May 13th in New York IFC Center and on May 20th in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Royale Theatre) L’AMOUR FOU documents Pierre Bergé’s personal coming-to-terms with the death of his lifelong partner - Yves Saint Laurent - through the objects they shared in life.

In 1958, the legendary couturier met and fell in love with industrialist (patron) Pierre Bergé, thus forging a relationship that would endure fifty years of extraordinary success, emotional turbulence and lingering devotion.

Following the death of Saint Laurent in 2008, Bergé opted to auction off all of the art objects that were collected during the course of their unique union which spanned several decades.

Both men shared a mutual passion for beauty in objects, places, people - and most of all - by virtue of their personal and professional loving relationship.

The documentary takes an over-the-shoulder peak, as Berge muses about his long-time lover (and the treasures snapped up during the course of their exotic travels around the globe) as he catalogues and prepares to auction off their fabulous collection of art deco vases, African sculptures, and remarkable paintings by famed artists such as Modigliani, Picasso, and Matisse.

Touching!

San Francisco Giants...Brandon Belt emotional over nod! Rag-tag wonders play Dodgers today!

Who said that grown men don't cry?

When management in the front office informed Brandon Belt that he was given the nod for a coveted spot on the twenty-five-man Giants roster for the upcoming baseball season, he did just that.

But, his were tears of joy!

"This has been a dream all my life. It's the best thing that ever happened to me," he tearfully confided to a posse of probing reporters who swarmed around the rookie yesterday afternoon to gobble up the scoop first-hand.

"Except for my marriage," he gushed in almost an after-thought, as his face turned beet red.

The kid is going to have to get used to the attention, I guess!

The news came as no surprise to me or my readers at the Tattler.

Yesterday, I pointed out that it was probably a "go" for the 1st Baseman amidst a lot of wild speculation (pro and con) that ran rampant in sports circles this past week.

Post:  03/30/2011

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2011/03/san-franciso-giantswin-tuesday-final.html

The move was a bit iffy for obvious reasons.

But, Bent's performance this last season in the minor leagues, grabbed the attention of the scouts, nonetheless.

During spring training, the shy ballplayer (who team mate Buster Posey has nick-named "Beller") hit at .282 with 3 homers and and 13 RBIs, enough bait to give the kid from nowhere a shot at the big leagues.

Notwithstanding, fans may recall that a rag-tag Giants team that was tossed together last season with a hope-and-a-prayer (and a lot of gumption of the part of the General Manager), roared on to win the World Championships.

One reporter on the nightly news referred to the Belt "break" as one of the "feel good" stories of the day.

Indeed!

Within hours of the announcement to the press, Belt hopped on a jet alongside the rest of the Giants, to journey on to Los Angeles where he'll play in the "Opener" against the Dodgers today.

Sports enthusiasts, meanwhile, are ecstatic.

In fact, so much so, that a posse of fans rustled up the funds to purchase a banner to hoist up over the stadium in LA LA LAND, which will read:

SF Giants 2010
Champs: Beat LA

The ubiquitous in-your-face slogan is 75 feet long and 50 feet high and was crafted at a cost of approximately $6,500.

Folks who can't make the game in person can catch it on ESPN or KNBR (680 AM).

I am predicting a win!

By the way, the Giants beat out the Oakland A's yesterday.

San Francisco Giants...Nightclubs "Play Ball" on strip! Promo pushes Black & Orange & Gear Logo!

In a move to drum up business during the upcoming baseball season (Home Opener April 8th) a handful of late-night hot (as in curvaceous and sexy) spots are offering up discounts for patrons who turn up at the door in Black & Orange (Giants team colors) and/or logo gear.

Go! Giants! Go!

Obviously, the owners are hopping on the bandwagon in the wake of the Giants fever that erupted the last championship season, which resulted in packed pubs around the city.

Clubs like - Roaring 20's, Broadway Showgirls, Larry Flint's Hustler Club, and the HungryI (to name a few) - are launching the ballsy in-your-face promo in a bold-faced effort to steal some of the thunder (and cash) out of the greasy hands of pub owners who scrambled to serve houses packed with thirsty baseball enthusiasts (and made a killing in the process).

Do 'ya suppose the strippers will be teasing Giants fans in skimpy "G" strings highlighted with Orange & Black frilly flourishes in all the erotic places?

Dudes, don't forget your rubbers - er - sneakers, eh?

Britney Spears...zooms into Castro to greet fans! ABC TV switches gears for damage control!

Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
San Francisco

The big event over the weekend in San Francisco was the free Britney Spears concert in the Castro District.

Wait a minute, wasn't the much-ballyhooed event relcoated to the Bill Graham Civic Center in downtown San Francisco?

Well, yes, in the 11th hour a decision was made by ABC brass to switch venues.

This is where it gets tricky!

Initially, ABC's "Good Morning America" cited security issues as grounds for tossing the Pop Diva's blow-out gig at the indoor location instead of in the throbbing groin of of a neighborhood affectionately referred to by the locals as "gay gulch".

But, after the word trickled back that residents of the Castro District felt "snubbed" by the last-minute Britney no-show (for dubious reasons), the suits did an about-face and attempted emergency damage control.

Uh-huh!

Suddenly, the focus was shifted to dark ominous clouds that had been rumbling overhead in recent days and - of course - cries that inclement weather might force a cancellation altogether!

The clever producers seized on the timely weather forecast to explain away their switcheroo - after-the-fact - which raised a few pretty preened eyebrows in the process.

In fact, over the weekend in the picturesque City by the Bay, a posse of gussied-up Drag Queens proceeded to poke fun at Britney in a sort-of light-hearted roast.

For example, comics at a "Britney Night Drag Show" (at a trendy watering hole South of Market) sashayed up on stage to lampoon the Diva, her propensity to slurp down mocha lattes, dangle cigarettes off the edge of a pouty lip, and play up her baby-doll demeanour for whatever reason that was blowing in the wind that day!

What a hoot!

Heklina - a local celeb (and Icon in her own right) - pointed an accusing finger at Ms. Spears in the wake of all the controversy hovering over Brit's pending arrival in fag heaven.

"This whole Castro appearance, I think, was born in some marketing room somewhere," she blabbed to everyone within earshot.

Needless to say, Brit was anxious to offer an olive branch, in view of the wagging tongues that were chirping incessantly - and not always so favorably - around the pop landscape.

Even the editors at the San Francisco Chronicle must have been miffed; after all, they published in Sunday's Edition, that Britney was performing on stage in the Castro that day.

Ooops!

ABC's announcement was issued too late to prevent a snafu!

Notwithstanding,  it is doubtful many bought their excuses, in view of the obvious.

Hasn't ABC ever facilitated the use of spritely-colored eye-catching canvas tents, when the threat of rain was expected to spoil a staged event outdoors just prior to curtain?

Needless to say, on the heels of her entertaining upbeat stage show (OMG! Brit allegedly lip-synched the tunes in spite of the fact she was indoors!), the perky pop star was inclined to zoom up to the Castro District to mingle with a gaggle of her die-hard fans in the street as she popped in-and-out-of a handful of shops on the look-out for spiffy threads to don.

In particular, Ms. Spears also made a point of slipping into one community outlet, that raises funds for A.I.D.S. research, funding, and assistance to the afflicted.

Good on you, Brit!

Bottom line, Ms. Spears saved herself from toppling over the edge of the Abyss, thankfully for her wildly supportive fans!

Later!

Oh Land...debuts on Dave Letterman! A smash performance!

A few weeks ago, I caught a live! performance of Oh Land - a Pop Singer who hails from Denmark - at the Abbey in West Hollywood and was knocked out.

Needless to say, I posted a rave review!

Post:  02/04/2011

Once again, life proved to be synchronistic in nature.

I was casually channel-surfing last night, when I landed on Dave Letterman just as he was introducing the pretty pop star in her debut performance on Network Television in the U.S.

The pop beauty unveiled her new single - "Son of a Gun" - to the enthusiastic audience.

No doubt - the smash bang-up set - will trigger her musical career into the stratosphere in coming months.

Congrats, Oh Land!

Love 'ya.

Brian Wilson...Giants pitcher eccentric! News Anchors take jabs at sports weirdo!

News anchors have been shaking their heads over the antics of Giants pitcher Brian Wilson in recent days.

For starters, they've been raising eyebrows over the athlete's alleged "friendship" with Hollywood bad-boy, Charlie Sheen.

Management in the front office for the Giants just shrug when quizzed on the subject of the two strange "bedfellows".

"Brian Wilson is not your normal ball-player," one coach uttered up on the field during warm-ups, almost under their breath.

Then, there is the issue of the high-profile ball-player's Official Web Site.

A posse of frenzied media types find the fan site a tad odd!

For instance, Wilson has invited guests to post publicity stills featuring their beloved beards!

In addition, the Wilson ego-builder is rife with a lot of other curious goings-on, in-between the rich multi-media web pages.

But, I guess the old saying applies when a major league pro ball player figures into the scheme of things, eh?

For example - if a regular Joe is poor and acts strange - he's labelled a "crazy".

In contrast, reporters politely refer to Wilson (a star stud) as "eccentric".
Talk about being diplomatic (or side-stepping the issue).

I say, call a spade a spade!

RED...Bruce Willis big budget bore! Turkey tasteless...

As far as spoofs go, it went badly.

Blame it on a poorly-developed idea (book adaptation), badly-written script, and a star past his prime - who lacked the good sense to quit - while he was ahead of the game.

Even the normally-formidable talents of elegant Helen Mirren and quirky John Malcovich couldn’t save a Die Hard star’s vanity vehicle intended to end a long drought.

Not much to crow about, Bruce.

Sight gags went awry, dialogue fell flat, and the old Willis screen charm - what there was of it - wore thin a few minutes into the lame flick.

Frankly, I dozed off half-the-way through this studio clunker, which was short on laughs - and thanks to Demi’s ex - too long in the tooth to rustle up any enthusiasm for its cardboard characters and muddled plot.

The basic premise - a posse of retired spies break into a secure Law Enforcement Agency to ferret out information on a hit - stunk to high heaven.

In fact, the writers must have been smoking some of the leafy green stuff at a rally for the legalization of marijuana in sunny Cal, when they tossed about this dumb scenario in the development phase.

I expect the box office receipts will be sobering when the word gets out.

In a nutshell?

Red is a overcooked turkey that causes the stomach to turn.

Excuse me, while I go and throw up!

San Francisco...Trolley Dances! In-the-round performances on streetcars!

Trolley Troupe Streetcar antics!

What a novel idea!

A local choreographer  has whipped up a couple of innovative dances routines with the special aim of taking the world by storm.

Well, one street car at a time, for starters.

“Art isn’t just for the person who can pay $30 to get into a show,” Kim Epifano chirped to the local media as she feverishly put finishing touches on the innovative “in the round” performance pieces to play out on Muni’s N-Judah line this weekend in San Francisco.

For the cost of a streetcar ticket ($2 regular fare) riders will be treated to entertaining shows.

Six dance troupes are involved - including the celebrated Goode Performance Group - who will perform alongside lesser-known companies such as the Sunset Chinese Folk Dance

The annual event has been entertaining the locals (and tourists alike) for 7 years.

Understandably, preparations for the successful trolley dances have become a full-time enterprise.

Six guided tours make up the programs to be presented between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2:45 daily on the weekend.

The creative tour de force starts at - Duboce Park, heads through Duboce Triangle, Cole Valley, and the inner Sunset - to end at the Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park.

At salients points along the route, there will be performances off the trolley too.
Folks on the go are welcome to catch snippets of the traveling dance show for free from the sidelines on the street for free.

Beverages and snacks are not available, so guests are urged to bring their own.

Break a leg, Ms. Epifano, eh?

Dave Letterman...Sean Diddy Combs cock tease! Sex-texting makes host blush!

Dave has elegant taste in ties!

The guest segment was titillating, to say the least.

And, right out of the starter's gate - shortly after Sean Diddy Combs alighted on Dave's couch - his "glassy-eyed" stare said it all.

The controversial front man was high on something.

Just maybe, that was why he was in such a horny mood, eh?

What else would account for his diarrhea of the mouth on the subject of sex-texting?

Was he so oblivious to the fact he was embarrassing Letterman - who turned beet red a few minutes into the jaw-dropping in-your-groin chat - by openly gossiping about Brett Favre's addictive past-time of  exposing his penis on a communication device?

"Actually, if you use a certain Blackberry at a  particular angle, it makes your penis look bigger," he wickedly pointed out to Dave.

"So, of course, you're going to want to show it off to everyone," he blurted out with a suggestive grunt.
Ooops!

What do they say about loose lips sinking ships?

A comment about "fish eye" lenses underscored that Sean Diddly Combs has  undoubtedly been  experimenting with the possibilities.

Fortunately, unlike Diddy, I don't need any props to entice potential lovers.

Maybe folks are mistaken.

Once you've had Black - in the case of Bo Diddy Combs, anyway - you always go back?

At this point, Combs touted the notion - that spicing things up with lovers - was a sexy way to keep the juices flowing.

Do 'ya suppose he has to take Viagra, too?

When Dave dragged out a publicity still of Combs standing astride a likeness of the pop star at Madame Tussuad's Museum, he waxed poetic.

"I've got my double at Tussuad's, and a star on the Hollywood strip, so I feel like showing off my penis right now," he joked, half-seriously.

In addition, the black rapper had some words of advice to nubile novices, to avoid scandal or too much "exposure" on the National tabloid news outlets.

"Cut off the head, though. Just show your naked body from the neck down," he dead-panned to the rapt audience who sat stone-faced and shocked by the racy explicit dialogue.

"How many of you haven't shown your naked body parts to a loved one," he quizzed, at this juncture.

There wasn't any show of hands, so just maybe, studio fans were also caught with their dicks - and what-have-you - in the wringer, too.

Gotcha!

Dave worried about the radiation.

"I wouldn't want to show my thing," he adamantly stated for the record.

"I feel for Favre. He's a great pro ball player," Combs gushed in response, in so many words.

"So, if he wants to share his naked penis on his cell, that's okay by me," he continued non-plussed.

"But I thought it was kind of a mass mailing," Letterman quipped - at which point - the guests in the stands roared.

"It was kind-of like - 'Here it is' - Dave guffawed.

"Anyone want it?"

Oh boy, nothing worse than sloppy seconds!

San Francisco...the accidental tourist! Fisherman's wharf relaxing day-trip!

Today, I dashed into 711 to snatch up the daily newspaper - and for some inexplicable reason - I got turned around.

Shortly after I was comfortably ensconced in a comfy seat on a streetcar - and a few column inches into an amusing news bite on Gavin Newsom and his wager with the Mayor of Philadelphia - I was forced to switch gears.

Because I wasn’t paying attention, I ended up on the wrong train heading towards Pier 39, in the opposite direction of my original destination (the Castro District).

Ooops!

Instead of panicking, though, I reflected on the mishap for a moment or two.

Then, I said to myself - as Bette Midler is often want to do - in times of crisis.

“Self, take the day off.”

So, I did!

Soon, I was mingling with a posse of out-of-towers on the boardwalk, taking in all the scintillating sights and sounds picturesque San Francisco has to offer.

An accidental tourist?

You bet!

And what - pray tell - was the biggest draw at the Pier?

Supping on fresh catch of the day - at one of the trendy seafood restaurants hugging the rugged coast - was a leisure activity at the top of the list (according to a few out-of-towners I crossed paths with).

A main entree, washed down with a thirst-quenching beer or carafe of chilled wine, may run ‘ya about twenty five bucks a head (not including tax) at a minimum.

But, worth every deteriorating penny!

Of course, for those on a budget, In-N-Out Burger is still capable of satiating a hungry gut for a fraction of the cost when a visitor is "on the go".

Next up on the “to do” list?

A brisk cruise in the historic harbor - off Alcatraz - of course!

In spite of the fact a handful of the lightweight boats were a bit dilapidated - and in dire need of a fresh coat of paint - a short stint on the waterfront will make a dent in anyone's well-worn alligator-skin wallet to the tune of about $18.00 (for starters).

If you hanker to stay in shape while on holiday in the city by the Bay, consider renting a bike and burning off a few calories, as you take in the sweeping vistas at a snail’s pace.

An  outgoing tour guide at - “Blazing Saddles” - enlightened me about the joys of day-tripping on two wheels instead of a boring four.

“There are bike trails along the coast - from the wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge - and beyond to Sausalito. At the other end, if you’re tired, just hop on the ferry and head back to the mainland that route. No problem.”

$8.00 an hour for pedal power!

For the truly lazy - and those who pine for a breeze to whiz through their hair on intense muggy days - a motorized bike is also available.

In addition to the above delights - there are souvenir shops, a coin museum, and open-air bus tours - to round out the day’s activities.

When you head back to the Hotel district, try to shoot for a ride on public transport provided courtesy of the city.

Eager tourists crave a thrill ride - that twists and turns - from the wharf to the downtown core along Powell on a cable car.

Unfortunately, the conductor’s helper packs ‘em in so tight, it’s difficult to catch the romantic images of turn-of-the-century houses - with their ubiquitous eye-catching gingerbread trim and inviting bay windows - lining the quaint little streets without craning a neck (and possibly suffering injury).

On the other side of the steep hill, past Nob Hill, I jumped off the trolley in a popular section of town just off Union Square.

Nike's "Marathon for Women" was camped there, by the way, causing a little more street traffic than usual!

I slipped into the chic St. Francis Hotel to take a gander at some of the historical memorabilia showcased in the staid front lobby crafted in teak-panelled walls, elegant  designer fixtures, and plush carpet underfoot.

A tony crowd lounged around  sipping on mint Julips, fizzy sodas, and what-have-you.

Pricey!

Down the hectic busy street, for a mere 3 bucks - I purchased a glass of  chilled white Chablis - and proceeded to plunk myself down  alfresco at a cafe (and people-watched to my heart’s content).

Life in the romantic slow lane.

Loved it!

Twitter...take a hike says Boise State Football coach! What a twit...

Twit @ Boise State causes tweeters to titter!

Obviously, a grid iron enthusiast strapped on his jock strap too tight.

Why else would the blood be restricted from flowing to his brain?

Say what?

You figure it out.

The Idaho Statesman has reported that the Boise State coach - Chris Petersen - banned players from posting on Twitter for the duration of the football season.

Why, pray tell, did the Twitter craze  incur his wrath?

According to Petersen, posting on the social networking hub, is a distraction the team doesn't need.

My knee-jerk reaction?

What a twit!

A competent coach - with an ounce or two of football savvy - is what they truly need.

And, a lift on the ban, San Francisco-style!

Zsa Zsa Gabor...glam legend slated to exit hospital! Hilton wealth & playboy lovers!

Zsa Zsa a great beauty in her day!

Merv Griffin & Gabor sisters!
(minus 1)

Zsa Zsa Gabor - known for the slap that was heard around the world - is slated to pack up her wigs and make-up bag and purr home today in hubbie's luxury Rolls Royce after a nasty slip-and-fall sent her to the hospital last week for emergency medical care.

Uh-huh!

Though, a rumored 93, Ms. Gabor still manages to capture the imagination of the curious masses around the globe.

Within minutes, Ms. Gabor was a trending topic on twitter, and the rumors and innuendo were in full swing.

Was she, like so many aging Hollywood legends, being held captive by unscrupulous jailors out to scoff up her jewels and rolls of Hollywood studio cash stashed away over the years?

Though basically a recluse - and boasting a Prince for a husband (often spied at Starbucks in WeHo ringside twiddling his thumbs over java) - many fond memories of Gabor's antics brought  a smile to the faces of many when the news broke.

"Oh, I remember Zsa Zsa from the Merv Griffen show. And, her sister, Eva," one local quipped to a bystander at Ralph's.

"She was the epitome of glamour," piped up another.

I met her on a movie set once in Hollywood and I recall that she was a swirl of fluffy boas and expensive baubles as she glided by with a posse of fussy handlers in tow.

When a Beverly Hills motorcycle cop pulled her over for a traffic violation a dozen or so years ago in the upscale enclave of Beverly Hills it was headline-grabbing news here and abroad; after all, Zsa Zsa was so incensed by his rude behaviour and reprehensible manners that she roundly slapped him across his handsome mustachioed face.

Many thought she should have maneuvered a date!

Suppose she would have been hauled into the slammer for attempted bribery, eh?

Merv, though scandalized a tad, appeared to applaud her ballsy bravado when she fluttered in to chat him up on the next talk show engagement.

The popular rotund talk show host - though rumored to be in an affair with sister Eva (a beard)  was just one of the girls who delighted in a bit of delightful gossip with the infectious Gabor sisters.

The fiery Hungarian was hailed as the first celebrity to be famous solely for her celebrity (thanks to Merv).

Sorry Paris, great auntie Zsa Zsa was light-years ahead of 'ya in that regard.

And, in recent years, Gabor has gained cult culture status for God-awful performances in old sci-fi low-budget thrillers that were plain CAMPY! CAMPY! CAMPY!

At one point, Liz Taylor was poised to become her step-daughter due to a couple of infamous trysts the two celebrated show-biz legends were scandalously involved in with male lovers that nearly hastened the odd-ball connection by virtue of star-crossed paths at the altar.

Zsa Zsa Gabor was born in 1917 (???)

"Probably," biographers have dubiously noted for the record.

The zaftig Gabor girls always did their best to confound the records (and snoopy folks who tried to fathom them) in order to conceal their ages (even their mother's reported date of birth varies by as much as five years give or take a decade or two).

As a young girl, Gabor may have competed in the Miss Hungary contest, or maybe not.

Years later, when Zsa Zsa swore up-and-down that her age was such-and-such, one astute guest nearby - with good arithmetic skills - jumped up and squawked that if that was the case she would have to have entered the infamous beauty contest she often spoke of when she was a nubile twelve or thirteen years of age!

At different times the three Gabor sisters have claimed to have won that pageant, or have been runners-up, with the same ensuing dilemma popping up to dash their efforts to remain younger than their years for reasons of vanity.

Age, lovers, and men have been a constant upset in Zsa Zsa's life to reckon with.

In 1937, Gabor married a Turkish foreign affairs minister considerably older than she was.

After she arrived in Turkey in the arms of her new beau, however, she alleged the marriage was never consumated in order to embark on a new romance with well-connected Kemal Ataturk - the President of Turkey - after she caught his eye.

Shortly thereafter, Gabor divorced her first husband in 1941 when she first arrived in America.

Conrad Hilton (Hilton Hotels) married Zsa Zsa in 1942 unaware that his young bride was a big spender who enjoyed the untold luxuries that life had to offer.

Her wanton excesses forced the Hotelier to place her on a $250-a-week budget which soured their marriage, according to their circle of friends at the time.

Before Conrad's daughter (Francesca) was born, Zsa Zsa had lost interest in the union.

So, when she crossed paths with actor George Sanders, she proceeded to set her sights on the rising star of stage and screen.

However, Gabor remained on 'amicable' terms with Conrad.

Smart gal!

In 1955,  he promised Zsa Zsa a special rate at all the Hilton hotels for the rest of her life, such a generous man was he.

After tying the knot with Sanders,  Zsa Zsa pined to be an actress.

In due time, she used her influential contacts to land small parts in low-budget films and on Television.

Zsa Zsa lucked out when she landed an important screen role in the 1951 film Moulin Rouge with Jose Ferrer.

However, film director John Huston allegedly kept Zsa Zsa on needles-and-pins when he persisted in constant humiliation tactics in front of the cast and crew, according to sources close to the actress.

Quirkier, more offbeat roles were offered up in 1950s, including a two episode stint on the popular TV show, Batman.

It wasn't below Zsa Zsa to play cameos as herself - which undoubtedly - led to her gathering fame over the years.

In spite of a long-lasting union with Sanders, Zsa Zsa was inclined to pursue a scandalous affair with a Dominican playboy by the name of Porfirio Rubirosa (known for his donkey dick among wealthy socialite ladies he teased and courted) in 1952.

Rubirosa's claim to fame (in addition to being well-hung) was a marriage to Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton who was allegedly forced to pay princely sums in alimony when he packed his bags and left her for greener pastures.

In 1954, a black eye caused the rumor mill to speculate that the celebrated polo player beat Zsa Zsa, and was the event that triggered their eventual split as Internationally-known lovers.

To the bitter end, Gabor whispered to friends:

"He loves me."

The proud beauty explained it this way.

"Rubirosa in Spanish means red rose, for me it means black eye. A man only hits a woman if he loves her deeply."

Maybe folks will have some sympathy for Mel Gibson after all, eh?

Adam Lambert...appears @ Mandalay Bay in Vegas! Idol star sold out!

What do you want from me?

In the case of Adam Lambert, not much.

The American Idol runner-up - who took the Nation by storm last year in spite of the fact he didn't snatch up the coveted 1st prize on Fox's hit variety show - has a lot to crow about nonetheless.

Hit tunes running up the charts are nothing to quibble at, for starters.

And now, Lambert boasts sold out live! concerts in Vegas at Mandalay Bay this weekend.

It appears that the sky is no imit for this rising star taking the show-biz arena by storm non-stop!

A movie in the offing?

President Obama..speaks at Aria in Vegas today! Lodges @ Caesar's Palace...

Prez will speak at Aria!

The theme of the speech?

President Obama will touch down in Vegas with a bit of controversy nipping at his heels.

For starters, the Governor will not be greeting the Commander-in-Chief when he alights onto the tarmac late this afternoon.

Although some have tittered that the State's Chief Honcho is snubbing the President because he is still pi**ed over remarks Obama uttered up last year that resulted in a mammoth loss of business to the desert Oasis's Convention business - the Governor's handlers swear up-and-down that scheduling conflicts are the reason for the failure to bow down.
Also, some are grumbling that during a stellar  week of  Tourism - operators of aerial sight-seeing tours conducted by helicopter - may lose up to a half-a-million dollars in revenue over the next twenty-four hours because the flights have been restricted above Las Vegas pending the arrival and departure of the President's carrier.

Ouch!

The President is in town to rally and raise funds for Harry Reid.

In addition, Barack Obama is scheduled to give a prepared speech at Aria around the dinner hour.

But, get this!

Instead of hunkering down at CityCenter's crown jewel, the President has elected to takelodging a hop-and-a-skip away at Caesar's Palace.

Maybe the administration is taking a cue from the Queen (Elizabeth II, silly!) and being budget-minded this trip?

Or, perhaps Caesar's is more suitable digs for an "Emperor" of Obama's ilk?

Just maybe, he's hopped up over the idea of taking in a glitzy Vegas show!

Lindsay Lohan...GUILTY! Star breaks down in Court! 90-days in slammer!

Loss of Innocence Hollywood-style!

A swarm of paparazzi excitedly jockeyed for position in front of a courthouse on a tony Beverly Hills street, a defense attorney committed a boo-boo when she inferred that the Judge may have been responsible for a misunderstanding that may have confused a teary-eyed starlet, and the world held its collective breath as the accused's fate was about to be determined by a no-nonesense Judge.

Uh-huh.

At two in the afternoon, when far-fetched soap operas were spewing  their wild yarns on local and National broadcasts, a real-life drama was unfolding in a court-room packed to the rafters with rapt observers hanging on every word uttered up during the proceedings.

Early on, there was a burp in the legal wranglings, when the court expressed its dismay about the fact one pertinent record - a detailed account of Lindsay Lohan's appearances at mandatory counselling sessions - was not available to peruse under close scrutiny.

For good reason, the Judge moved for a recess to rectify the problem.

I reported on this issue earlier in the day.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/07/lindsay-lohanshuns-process-servers.html

When the proceedings continued a short while later, the court focused on the documents in minute detail.

In fact, an employee of the facility where Lindsay Lohan was enrolled to take the necessary classes to meet the terms of her probation, was called to the witness stand to clarify the issues.

After an exhausting sifting through of records, it was ultimately determined that Ms. Lohan had failed to appear at 7 out of the 27 scheduled classes.

Ms. Lohan's attorney noted that after probation was revoked and a warrant was issued, her client made a good-faith effort thereafter to catch up with her obligations, by attending two or three classes in one week instead of the one stipulated by the court.

At this juncture, Lohan's attorney made a big boo-boo (or under-estimated the Judge's intelligence and insight), when she blatantly inferred that the her Honor may have been responsible for the misunderstanding (if there was one) and the alleged failure to comply.

"In Chambers, I recall you requested one class a week to ensure the obligation was completed by July 15th," the defense lawyer asserted for the record in so many words.

On the contrary!

The Judge proceeded to note for the record that she stipulated once a week because it was her understanding from experts in the field that a subject benefitted best by attending classes regularly once (not two or three times) a week.

Ouch!

Lohan's attorney must have had wax in her ears, or something, because that statement by the Judge failed to register in her little noggin'.

Later, just prior to sentencing, the ditzy attorney reiterated that the Judge imposed the 1 week class schedule to meet a July 15th deadline date set by the court - and that in view of that - her client was not in non-compliance.

Then, the attorney made the wildest comment of all.

"As of this week, Ms. Lohan is in full compliance with her court-ordered obligations.

Not!

At this juncture, just prior to a verdict being read, the court permitted Lindsay Lohan to stand and address the court.

Within minutes after asserting that she thought she was in compliance, and citing  unusual work-schedules to explain away irregularities, the pretty actress's voice filled with uncontrollable emotion - at which point - she broke down and cried.

Personally, I don't think they were crocodile tears.

Unfortantely, for me, the work excuses didn't hold much water.

Daily, defendants lose their apartments and jobs  on the heels of an arrest when they are jailed, put on probation, and so forth or so on.

That comes part 'n parcel with the conviction of a crime.

To expect to "do her time" - and continue normally with her life without interruption  - in view of life's reality regarding the legal system in this country today is a preposterous selfish notion.

At this juncture, the prosecutor launched her closing arguments.

"I appreciate the tears, but the truth is that she has not been in compliance," she started off.

The hefty middle-aged female attorney proceeded to rattle off  the details which didn't leave much doubt that Ms. Lohan was in fact - guilty of the accusations - as alleged.

Things got worse for Lohan when the Judge cited grounds for the ruling to be announced in the next breath or two.

"You lied when questioned about the DUI incident," she began.

For example, you tried to blame two others for the incident, before it was determined that you were actually driver of the vehicle, she added slowly and methodically.

When white powder was spotted on your jeans, you claimed the clothing was  not yours, she continued in earnest.

"However, friends testified that they were your favorite pants."

Liar! Liar! Your pants are on fire!

Gotcha!

Just betcha TMZ has dozens of shots of her in hob-nobbing at society events in those stylish threads, eh?

And, the Judge kept the hits zinging from the bench.

"You said you went to Promises for two weeks and that you were clean and sober. But your urine sample tested positive for cocaine," she noted solemnly for the court record.

Lies. Lies. Lies.

Finally, the sentence came down.

Lindsay was given three 30-day consecutive sentences in jail - in addition to - ninety days in rehab once the stint in the big house has been completed.

The emotionally-distraught starlet was ordered to surrender herself to the court on July 20th.

Just look at it this way, Lindsay, if you ever get called to audition for the part of Francis Farmer - you'll nab the part, no doubt - what with all the extensive experience under your belt 180 days from now.

Good luck, Lindsay.

Will come visit!

Did prior plunging neckline offend the court?
