Glee...pulls plug on Juilliard spin-off! Fans toss weight around!

At sizzling hot red carpet events in recent months - Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, and Chris Colfer - have been constantly hounded by the press to reveal all the delicious details about an alleged spin-off to "Glee" which would have focused on the show's three most-popular characters graduating and heading off to the famed Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

Now, it appears that the Glee creative team at Fox is having their doubts about turning the talented trio loose.

Ratings concerns?

Just betcha, the network brass are afraid of losing a solid fan base they've built up each week next season on the original "Glee".

If 'ya read between-the-lines, the answer appears to be yes on both counts (judging by the press releases spewing out from the production office).

In the words of co-creator Ryan Murphy:

"Since all the drama went down regarding the characters' upcoming graduation (with all the frenzied media outlets) we decided to put the plans on hold," Murphy chirped.

Maybe Fox didn't really know - 'til now - how truly essential these talented kids are in the grand schme of things?

So, what's cooking, dudes?

Hip Hop Dance Championships...talented contestants from 36 Countries compete! Orleans Arena!

Hip Hop enthusiasts are trekking into the desert oasis to compete in one of the most prestigious events of the season:

The World Hip Hop Dance Championships
This year is the 10th Anniversary of the glittering event which has been showcased in Las Vegas for the past four years to sell-out audiences.

Medals will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners in three age categories on Sunday evening (July 31st).

"It's very much like the Olympics of hip-hop. To see these kids stand on that riser and have it be announced that they just won the gold medal, and Boogaloo Sam or another icon (of hip-hop dance) places the gold medal around their neck as their national anthem plays, is something that's extremely special, and everybody in the audience gets choked up," gushed Howard Schwartz at a recent press junket (co-creator of the World Hip-Hop event).

Sunday's championship event marks the climax of a week of events that includes last week's U.S. Championships, as well as "Urban Moves" workshops at Red Rock Resort this Saturday and Sunday, "World Battles" in popping, locking, and all-styles (Saturday at Red Rock Resort also), and the World-3-on3 B-boy/B-girl battle Saturday.

Randy Jackson (Executive Producer of the "Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew") will also receive a 2011 Living Legend of Hip Hop award during the Championship Finals Presentation on Sunday for "elevating street dance and music in its growth and the ability to go beyond where it once was".

Congrats, Mr. Jackson!

Electric Daisy Carnival...2nd drug overdose steps up security at Vegas Speedway Musical Event!

Amid a storm of controversy, North America's largest electronic dance "Rave" is about to kick-off today at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the outskirts of town.

Local Officials said it was a "go" yesterday morning after assuring concerned citizens (opposed to the trendy tribal celebration) that high-security measures were in place.

But, later in the afternoon, the promoters were forced to revamp their procedures in the wake of the disturbing news that there had been a second death at a rave in Dallas last year which was cause for additional concern.

Today, Law Enforcement Officials are confident that the "Electric Daisy Carnival" will go off without a hitch - and that over the next three rollicking fun-loving days - the festival will be a positive upbeat musical experience with no tragic incidents on the horizon.

For starters, the age limit for attendance was raised from 16 years of age to 18.

ID will be checked and verified at the gate to ensure no underage electronic music fans slip through.

All ticket-holders will also be subjected to a thorough body-search.

An inside source also whispered in my ear that a posse of undercover narcotic's agents will be filtering through the crowd to monitor drug sales - with the ultimate aim - of preventing potential overdoses.

The drug of choice, of course, is ecstasy.

The illegal substance triggers a surge of serotonin in the body (nick-named the "Happiness Hormone") which results in a surge of euphoria and mind-boggling well-being - at which point - the individual experiences a heightened-sensitivity in respect to their five senses.

"Everyone gets real touchy-feely on the dance floor," one teen fessed up jubilantly to one reporter quizzing attendees at the front entrance.

Ecstasy addicts are easy to spot in the crowd because they usually suck on baby pacifiers to prevent the teeth from grinding (a side reaction to the drug which may become a nasty habit difficult to curb until the teeth literally fall out!).

The much-ballyhooed musical extravaganza is sponsored by INSOMNIAC (go figure!) and runs from sun-up to sun-down over the weekend.

About 150 musical artists are slated to perform at the trendy "can't miss" social event of the year.

In addition to wild dancing throughout the night, ticket-holders are sure to hop on a myriad of carnival rides to add to the weekend thrills.

See 'ya there!

Britney Spears..."Circus" comes to Vegas MGM Grand! June 25th!

Just a few weeks ago, San Franciscans maneuvered their way into a frenzied packed concert hall downtown, to get an up-close and personal gander at their Pop Princess!

Although a handful of critics sniped over every little thing - from the pouty star's alleged "lacklustre" robot-like dance moves to her oh-so ho-hum wardrobe struts - the die-hard fans were not disappointed in the least.

Now, the big Britney Spears "Circus" heads into Las Vegas on the 25th of June, and lands at the MGM Grand arena.

I expect the much-anticipated Brit extravaganza will be a sell-out!

See 'ya there, eh?

Entertainment Tonight...Mark Steines hunk dances! Mary Hart's send-off celebration!

If you've been channel-surfing this past week, then you've obviously been assaulted with a myriad of blurbs announcing Mary Hart will host her last segment of Entertainment Tonight tomorrow evening.

Today, I bolted upright when I caught sight of host - Mark Steines - dancing up a storm in a sneak preview of the big celebrations which will feature Mary's co-workers on the podium over the years at the highly-rated Entertainment tabloid-style show.

What a hunk!
In the event Ms. Hart is not your cup of tea (years ago one viewer actually tried to sue Ms. Hart and Entertainment Tonight on the grounds that her voice ricocheting over the airwaves each night grated on their nerves) then tune in to catch Steines.

In addition to being a smooth dancer capable of shaking his booty with the best of them, Steines is also a snappy dresser worth emulating, dudes..

Readers may recall that Mark was named on my 10 Best-Dressed Men list for 2010.

Stomp...auditions in New York City! April 25th! Break a leg!

The successful stage production - STOMP - is holding open auditions in New York City on April 25th.

The try-outs will be held at The Orpheum Theatre.

STOMP, is an exciting night of dazzling entertainment which features a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy.

After a 10 year collaboration, the creators - Steve McNicholas & Luke Cresswell - crafted a stage show that has been packing houses around the globe since its first inception in the summer of 1991.

The original cast of STOMP recorded music for the "Tank Girl" film soundtrack and also contributed to the Quincy Jones album "Q’s Jook Joint".

A soundtrack recorded by Cresswell and McNicholas for the Showtime Movie - “Riot" - was released in the Spring of ’97.

STOMP has also been featured in slick eye-popping commercials which include a handful for Coca-Cola’s Ice Pick, Target stores in the US, Toyota in Japan, and "Seat" in Europe.

More recently, STOMP was commissioned to create and produce the "Lost and Found Orchestra" which took the ideas behind Stomp to a symphonic level (in celebration of 40 years of the Brighton Festival).

The LFO performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival early in 2007 and at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The show was reworked and renamed for a US tour in 2010 and titled:

Pandemonium: the Lost and Found Orchestra

Paula Abdul..."Live to Dance" has potential to charm!

Judges give contestants standing ovation!

With a lot of fanfare, CBS launched - "Live to Dance" - Paula Abdul's attempt to rise up and prove critics wrong after a much-publicized (embarrassing) fall from Grace last year when she parted ways with Fox's American Idol.

To the reality-show's credit, Paula (who wears a hat as Executive Producer) has laid a workable foundation to build on, in the event the dance competition gains momentum in the coming weeks and rustles up a solid fan base sufficient to please the Network brass and sponsors alike.

Although the entertaining bill-of-fare - packaged into one-hour segments - doesn't stray far from its roots (i.e. talent shows where viewers at home root for the underdog or participate in the voting process).

There are a couple of departures from stale old concepts, however, that have the potential to uplift.

The "open door" policy is refreshing, for starters.

Dance enthusiasts aren't burdened down with a set of criteria - age restrictions, a need for an armful of professional credits to land an audition, training - that might otherwise discourage hopeful two-steppers (with original ideas on choreographed moves) from pursuing their day in the sun.

The contestants need only demonstrate their dance ability to take a stab at the jaw-dropping $500,000.00 prize!

In contrast to other popular ratings-getters on air 'til now - the panel of Judges presiding over the auditions (Michael Jackson's choreographer, a Pussy Dolls band member, and Paula Abdul) have a background in the discipline.

Consequently - the panel is able to render intelligent, well-rounded, truthful assessments (based on style, originality, and technique) that resonate with a chord of truth.

Decisions that fly-by-the-seat of the pants rarely go over well with sophisticated audiences around the country today, after all.

Unfortunately, disgruntled contestants are not always that easy to appease, when they are rejected.

Such was the case tonight, sadly, in one isolated incident.

When a hefty middle-aged gal got the thumbs down from the Pussy Doll adjudicator, the angry contestant was quick on the uptake.

"The skinny girl's hate," she snarled at the pretty celebrity, as a hush fell over the "dome".

Which begs the question.

"American Idol" often fueled controversies to trigger angry viewer response - with the aim achieving that end.

For example - the producers appeared to rub their hands with glee whenever ugly battles (and mind-boggling sinister power-plays) between Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul - played out in all their tawdry glory in the weekly gossip rags.

I'm betting that all the superficial "sweetness and light" - on the part of Paula Abdul in particular (a transparent B-list celeb who gushed once-too-often tonight on air in my estimation) - may eventually grate on the nerves.

"Live to Dance" may have to take a cue from the Wild World of Wrestling to appeal to the gladiator mentality now-and-then during sluggish runs.

A bitch fight may just be in the offing in the near future if the overnight ratings aren't up to snuff tomorrow morning.

San Francisco...Trolley Dances! In-the-round performances on streetcars!

Trolley Troupe Streetcar antics!

What a novel idea!

A local choreographer  has whipped up a couple of innovative dances routines with the special aim of taking the world by storm.

Well, one street car at a time, for starters.

“Art isn’t just for the person who can pay $30 to get into a show,” Kim Epifano chirped to the local media as she feverishly put finishing touches on the innovative “in the round” performance pieces to play out on Muni’s N-Judah line this weekend in San Francisco.

For the cost of a streetcar ticket ($2 regular fare) riders will be treated to entertaining shows.

Six dance troupes are involved - including the celebrated Goode Performance Group - who will perform alongside lesser-known companies such as the Sunset Chinese Folk Dance

The annual event has been entertaining the locals (and tourists alike) for 7 years.

Understandably, preparations for the successful trolley dances have become a full-time enterprise.

Six guided tours make up the programs to be presented between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2:45 daily on the weekend.

The creative tour de force starts at - Duboce Park, heads through Duboce Triangle, Cole Valley, and the inner Sunset - to end at the Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park.

At salients points along the route, there will be performances off the trolley too.
Folks on the go are welcome to catch snippets of the traveling dance show for free from the sidelines on the street for free.

Beverages and snacks are not available, so guests are urged to bring their own.

Break a leg, Ms. Epifano, eh?

Dancing with the Stars...Tiler Peck wows! Kate counts blessings! Soap hunk gets axe!

Back to suds, Aiden!

There was a lot of drama this evening on the ABC Network's hit show "Dancing with the Stars".

While viewers at home chewed their nails on the edge of their seats - as they wondered if Kate would make the cut and return triumphantly next week - the determined reality-show Mom was distracted (teary-eyed one moment) about a custody battle she was now facing in her personal life.

Whew!

The gal - who cleans up good - breezed through cliff-hanging moments at the close of the show.

Wisely, the producers interspersed the proceedings tonight, with a couple of live performances which were top-notch.

Seasoned pro - Shaday, for instance - wowed audiences with two sets that were soothing to the senses.

While her stage persona (wardrobe choices & oversized "bun") left a lot  be desired, fans were undoubtedly inclined to overlook her ho-hum stage presence, and tap their feet to the catchy beat of the engaging tunes.

In fact, back-up dancers (who performed out front on the roomy stage) rustled up a routine or two that were thoroughly entertaining.

Their appealing threads - jeans, colorful t-shirts, and caps - are sure to spark a street trend.

Probably the highlight of the night was a dramatic performance by Tiler Peck - a dancer - with the New York City Ballet.

The dramatic piece - choreographed by Travis Wall - was part of the respected Macy's "Stars of Dance" series.

The staging for - "Nuttin But Stringz" - was nothing short of dynamic.

The thrilling highly-stylized dance routine was impeccably in step.

In fact, the tricky moves signalled an innovative trend in dance.

A troupe of young dancers starting out in their illustrious careers - also offered up their own particular brand of ballroom dancing in another segment - that was fresh, professional, and traditional in many respects.

In a nostalgic moment, the in-house dance instructors took a stroll down memory lane.

For the most part, the hoofers glided onto stages around the world when they were just toddlers.

A myriad of aged snapshots - capturing the aspiring two-steppers in early performances, tugged at the hearstrings.

Anna started at age 6, and followed after her mother, who was a role model.

Chelsie cried before each lesson when she was a kid. Hated it!

Tony was frustrated by the fact he was always playing a mushroom or tree.

At one point, Tom Bergeron spied a couple of the outfits one dancer was forced to wear in those early stages of his budding career, and was inclined to crack a joke.

"Gosh, I'm surprised Maks didn't have to go through therapy after being forced to wear those costumes."

The dancers recalled that it was a nasty experience coming up through the ranks.

"There was a lot of pushing and shoving among the contestants - nail scratching - too," one instructor laughingly remembered.

"It's not like here where you have one couple on stage. Twenty couples were packed in and bitterly elbowing for position."

In a preivew of what is to come next week, audiences were treated to movie clips featuring the "Dancing with the Stars" talent pool.

One segment next Monday will be a scary horror genre piece.

Preview shots revealed the footage primarily focuses on macabre fright-night bill-of-fare straight out of the howling B-movie classic selections oft screened at revival houses at the stroke of midnight at the witching hour.

In another spoof, a studly dancer assumes the fictional character of "Glambo"

Can't wait!  Should be a hoot!

Neicy and Evan will be "starring" in a black & white tribute to classic films in the romance genre.

Cleverly, it's been titled: ChaChablanca.

Brooke - who I singled out as shabbily-dressed Monday night - made a star turn tonight.

This evening the hostess was dazzling in a blood-red body-fitting gown, swept up "do", and a smattering of diamonds at the neckline which caught the light and threw zillions of eye-catching rainbows here and there.

For some inexplicable reason, Tom Bergeron's jacket sleeves were all wrinkled, though.

If the stylish suit was fashioned in linen, that may be the reason why, since that fabric is so susceptible to crinkling and soiling.

Len stood out as a fashion plate, too, in a smart-looking suit, pastel-colored tasteful tie, and pocket pouffe.

As the elimination round started to inch forward, Jake noted he was saddened by the whole process.

"I've been so close to everyone that my heart goes out to anyone who may be cut."

Kate was upbeat and ecstatic.

"For the first time I was totally relaxed and had a lot of fun."

Chad, one of the most confident dudes on "Dancing" - down-to-earth and able to poke fun of himself - described himself as a work-in-progress.

Now, that's a true artist, speaking up!

Finally, the moment arrived, and everyone collectively held their breath.

Drum roll, please!

Kate escaped the axe, but Aiden got the old heave-ho.

At this juncture, fans in the audience jumped to their feet, and expressed their wild appreciation.

Tom Bergeron was so swept up in the emotion of the moment, he was inclined to poignantly note for the record, that Aiden was the first contestant to exit in the fourth round to every garner such a generous heartfelt send off.

Then, he noted that Aiden would be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel later tonight.

Ooops!

Watch out, Aiden!

In a promo earlier in the day, the perky talk show host made a quip about gonging loser contestants or feeding them to hungry crocodiles back stage.

Go in the front door, please!

And, exit quickly.

Fans (myself included) still intend to tune in on romantic afternoons to catch you on the soaps.

Dancing with the Stars...Pam nearly a goner! Beach Boy tribute with Stamos a highlight!

Shortly after the lights went up on the stage of "Dancing with Stars" tonight - the jolts and surprises -  packed a couple of hard-hitting whallops.

Pam Anderson (myself included) was stunned by the news that after the vote count was tallied from the viewing audience that she was relegated to the bottom two!

 And, wonders never ceased!

Buzz Aldrin must have crapped in his pants - when he was given the nod to return next week - in spite of a poor showing with the Judges last night.

Fans demonstrated the obvious!

Wowing audiences at home with dazzling costumes and fancy footwork doesn't always hold sway with fans entirely!

Tugging their heart-strings appears to be the key to scoring big with music-lovers around the country.

But Buzz is no fool!

"The Judges were right," he chuckled (about his performance)

"I was patriotic and served my country. My friends in the space program probably had something to do with this."

When Pamela was quizzed about what happened (???) her response was short and sweet.

"Whoops!"

At this juncture, producers opted to build the suspense by prolonging the outcome.

Fox sparked up the show with skits, a band performance, and a peek at the daily routine of competent co-hosts Brooke Burke and seasoned pro Tom Bergeron.

Shots of Brooke rehearsing lines with Tom, in the make-up room, and announcing contestants on a mic backstage as they sauntered down the stairs into the glare of the spotlight, were a fascinating look at life back stage.

"When I chat with the contestants, that is not scripted. So, I try to engage in a real conversation."

The Beach Boys - considered to be one of America's all-time favorite (best) bands - brought back alot of nostalgia with their hot performance of  "Fun Fun Fun".

Former Soap  star - John Stamos - wowed the folks in attendance with a solid stint on the drums.

In fact, the gig triggered a prolonged standing ovation, that didn't look like it would ever end.

In a hilarious colorful sketch, Len - outfitted as Moses - cited the ten commandments at Fox's hit show
to be mindful of.

For example - Thou shalt not do lifts, Thou shalt not have rhinestones, and Thou shalt honor the judges - were stand-out no-no segments that hit my funnybone.

In a fun twist, the professional dancers (the hired instructors coaching the contestants) were rustled up to dance a special number - with the ultimate aim of letting them strut their stuff - so contestants could see what "dance" was all about.

The vastly entertaining segment was - sexy, upbeat, spirited, choreographed well - and somewhat  reminiscent of boy-band slick schtick.

The light show dazzled!

There were jokes about Bruno and Elton John tom-catting around in France.

"Elton & Bruno loose in Southern France in the carefree eighties? Why, they must have bagged every chick in town," the commentator chuckled.

When a staffer strode up and whispered in his ear, a shocked look spread across his face.

"Elton John, too?" he asked increduously.

On the heels of the recent announcement by Ricky Martin that he is "gay" - the wicked humor was timely - and well-received by the open-minded guests.

In a solemn segment a troup of dancers from Haiti (sponsored by Macys) gave tribute to the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Interested viewers were invited to visit the web site and contribute funds.

www.abettercommunity.com

Neicy (who was saved and will appear next week) giggled that all the tension made her both anxious and hungry at the same time!

At the close of the show, I breathed a sigh of relief; after all, Pamela Anderson (my fave dancer) was spared the axe!

When I checked twitter, I noticed right off-the-bat, that follower Shannon Tweed posted info on how to vote for Pamela in upcoming segments.

Guess Shannon was worried too!

Because Pam was saved  it meant another hoofer went home in her stead.

Unfortunately, Shannon Doherty was a victim of the unkind fickle finger of fate.

"I'm not a dancer," she confided to  the hosts.

The journey was a fulfilling one for her, though.

As it turns out, it worked out for the best.

Yesterday, her partner tore a muscle off the bone during their performance, and would have left Shannon in a lurch with a new partner to trip-the-light fantastic with in future episodes.

Not a pretty prospect, she fessed up.

In a touching closing moment, all the dancers swarmed over the likeable twosome, and smothered them with hugs!

'Til next week, eh?

Alvin Alley American Dance Theater...Divine soul-stirring performances! Orange CountyPerforming Arts Center...

Segerstrom Hall
(artist rendering)

According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

"Dance doesn't get more soul-stirring."

San Francisco Ballet...chic Gala Opening Night! Director Tomasson toasted @ $1,000 a pop...

On Wednesday, there'll be a splashy (pricey) gala to hail Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson and celebrate the launching of the new season.

The $1,000.00 ticket will guarantee Ballet fans a spot in the limelight at a cocktail reception, dinner, and a much-anticipated stellar performance by the San Francisco Ballet.

Patrons with big bucks to splurge on the arts may spring for a table at $10,000.00 a crack.

Helgi Tomasson boasts a 25th Anniversary with the respected Ballet company.

However, when Tomasson first took the reins in 1985, there were some doubts about his commission.

Although the dancer from Iceland earned a silver medal at the 1st International Ballet in Moscow, and garnered considerable accolades over his distinguished career, there weren't too many choreographed numbers under his belt.

To his credit, supporters on the sidelines since then, have touted the humble performer for breaking down walls in the dance arena - and specifically - snuffing out a previous class distinction between regional and national ballet troupes.

And now, there is a whole new season ahead, to top that!

Congrats on your Silver Anniversary Helgi!

Ellen DeGeneres...hot men swagger by show! Dennis Quaid, the Bachelor, Colin Firth...

Was it just a coincidence that throughout the upcoming week Ellen has slated a bevy of buffed studs to guest on her highly-rated afternoon talk fest?

Or, just maybe, the perky hostess-with-the-mostest has jumped ship!

For viewers who are into a little eye-candy in the afteroon, I gather there will be ratings leap at the network, that should  have the suits rubbing their hands with glee.

On Monday, Ellen has invited " Bachelor" Jake Pavelka, to grace the hot seat.

Just betcha, that scandals revving up this season, will be titillating fodder for viewers at home to sink their teeth into.

Same afternoon, country super star - KEITH URBAN - is slated to gab  about his four deserving Grammy nominations.

Can the persuasive little tease convince Keith to pluck on his guitar for her appreciative audience?

Tune in and find out!

On Tuesday, an average guy will be applauded for risking his life to save an elderly woman, who was accidentally pushed off a platform at a train station.

He'll get a hero's welcome, 'fer sure!

And, Justin Timberlake's musical find - Matt Morris - will discuss the  recording contract he just signed with the Pop Icon's label.

But, I expect die-hard Justin Timberlake fans will surf over to Ellen, for one fantastic reason only!

Why,  to catch the sexy crooner snuggling up to Ellen, of course!

Dennis Quaid, known for having the best abs in the business, swaggers in on Wednesday (amid a flurry of frenzied wolf whistles and cat-calls).

The handsome actor will share productions notes on his upcoming feature "Legion".

Colin Firth, riding high on great reviews for his stellar portrayal of the "Single Man" (mine included) strides in on Thursday to bask in the glow.

If the glare of the spotlight turns him to booze and drugs, by golly, I expect he could pull aside the doc from the popular hit - "Celeb Rehab" - for some theapeutic advice (appearing that day, too).

The week closes out with Sean Hayes (Friday).

Since the talented actor (known to play gay characters to the hilarious hilt) hasn't been on the show in four years, you can bet your sweet bippy he'll be updating Ellen with every salacious tidbit.

As they say at Warner Brothers:

That' all folks!

World Dance Movement...Dance Workshop in Italy with celebrated Dancer Desmond Richardson!

Study dance in an Italian Paradise!

And, learn the intricacies of ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, training with an international faculty made up of names that will inspire simply hearing them trill off the tongue.

Now dedicated performers have a golden opportunity to spend two weeks in Italy training with an international faculty made up of names that will inspire by simply hearing them.

Imagine this scenario, for instance.

Dedicated performers will have the golden opportunity to dance in an open-air studio in scenic Castellana Grotte, Italy.

The study-vacation will be brimming full of dancing, swimming, sailing, amazing Italian cuisine, and dancers from 20 different countries.

In addition, there will be one-on-one attention by top-notch faculty members such as Michèle Assaf (Artistic Director), Bruno Collinet (Co-Artistic Director), Clarissa Mucci, Desmond Richardson, Joshua Pelatzky, Jason Parsons, Sabatino & Federica, David Marquez, and Shelly Masenoir, to name a few.

According to my contacts at the renowned organization, the ultimate goal is to provide dancers and educators from around the world with the incredible opportunity to study-vacation in an Italian paradise with an international faculty of unparalleled talent.

In sum, the event brings together a myriad of cultures, talents and opportunities in a non-competitive atmosphere.
