San Francisco...earthquake! City rocks & rolls @ 3 pm! Big one on way!

OMG!

How does that hit tune go?

"I felt the earth move under my feet!"

Uh-huh!

I was standing at a computer terminal at the Main Library in downtown San Francisco a few minutes ago - checking out source material - when the floor suddenly rippled, the walls turned liquid, and my heart fluttered nervously for a second or two.

Earthquake!

Mind you, it was just a gentle rocking one, but nothing to sniff at!

Ironically - local News anchors were just chatting each other up about the possiblity of a quake today - of all days!

Apparently, yesterday was the anniversay of the legendary quake that shook the city to its foundations - causing it to erupt in fire and burn to the ground many moons ago - around the turn-of-the century.

In fact, a rag-tag gang of historians trotted down to Market Street last night - to solemnly draw attention to that fateful day when San Franciscans were forced to rebuild from scratch after the devasting temblor struck.

Lotta's Fountain, where the vigil took place, was the only public memorial left standing way back when!

Scientists were predicting a fifty-to-sixty percent chance that the earth would rumble today.

Golly!

When I first immigrated to the U.S. - and took up residence in Southern California - the tiniest rolling motion usually jolted me from a deep sleep.

Over time, I became accustomed to the nudges, and paid them no mind over time.

Until the Northridge Earthquake hit, that is.

Unfortunately, I was renting an apartment in a five-story New York-style walk-up, which the landlord neglected to retrofit.

In the middle of the night, I was shaken from a deep slumber, and confronted with a lot of moaning-and-groaning as the foundations began to shift and collapse beneath me.

What the!

Outside, I suddenly caught sight of all the city lights across Los Angeles, suddenly being extinguished in waves from one end of town to the next as the power flashed out.

Suddenly, I was in a panic, because the creaking began to increase in volume signalling an impending disaster to come.

I scrambled out of bed and was faced with a couple of dilemmas.

For starters, all the power was out, so I was unable to locate my clothes.

Uh-huh.

I sleep in the nude!

For a few tense moments, I stumbled around in the dark tripping and falling over furniture - and a host of once-nifty little collectables - that were now strewn all over the apartment floor in disarray.

Once I managed to get dressed, I faced a pressing new frightful problem.

A bookshelf in the hall had fallen in front of the door and was making my exit next-to-impossible.

When I finally escaped into the dark hall, with the building sinking below my barefeet by the minute, I was forced to dart down five flights of stairs in the eerily silent apartment house.

Where was everyone?

Was this just some horrific nightmare?

Outside, when I alighted into the dark spooky night, I spied all of my neighbors huddled in their cars fiddling with their radios.

News reports were being excitedly dispated from radio stations around the city.

Meanwhile, just down the street, there was a lot of looting underway on Hollywood Boulevard.

At least right up 'til the moment the military moved in, drew their rifles, and stood watch over the fray until a semblance of order was regained.

As I noted in my post later, I felt like I was in war-torn Beirut, God forbid!

A few hours later, the City Inspector entered the premises, and issued red-tag warnings to the tenants.
Because of the precarious condition of the old brick building, we were barred from returning to our homes!

As I noted in updates in the past, earthquakes are not entirely out-of-the-norm on the San Andreas fault.

If you scrutinize a map, it becomes painstakingly evident - that because Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle rest on two plates (that are moving in different directions beneath the shakey earth) - quakes are inevitable.

In fact, I am predicting another "big one" in the next five years!

Today, was just a percursor to a series of quakes, that are going to do down starting this week.

So, hold onto your britches  and secure all those expensive china plates on display in the dining-room, because we're all in for a bumpy night or two.

Just betcha, die-hard Californians will stay, and brave the inevitable.

I'm certainly not packing!

Archbishop Desmond Tutu...to participate in Sermon @ Grace Cathedral! San Francisco!

As a rule, it is rare to land a scoop, when attending Church.

But, shortly after a "Contemplative Eucharist" was underway at Grace Cathedral last evening on Nob Hill, it was announced that Archbishop Desmond Tutu would be participating in a Sermon next Sunday (March 6th) at 11 a.m.

After noting that the Nobel Peace Prize-winner would be attending a closed-door session on Thursday night, the Reverend was quick to warn the parishioners about the potential pitfalls of trotting in late next week.

"Arrive early!  The pews will probably be filled at Grace Cathedral," she urged with a broad smile on her cherubic face.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp (Transvaal).

The Holy Man's father was a teacher.

Not surprisingly, Tutu first trained as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College.

After graduating from the University of South Africa in 1954, Desmond toiled as a high school teacher, before his studies on theology commenced.

The charismatic leader was ordained as a priest in 1960.

From 1967 to 1972 - Tutu taught theology in South Africa - before returning to England for three years as the assistant director of a theological institute in London (England).

In 1975, the highly spiritual soul was appointed the Dean of St. Mary's Cathedral in Johannesburg (the first black to hold the position).

Tutu later became General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches - where he formulated his opinions on the importance of  observing "democratic just societies without racial division" - which touted:

1. equal civil rights for all
2. the abolition of South Africa's passport laws
3. a common system of education
4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called "homelands"

The South African Council of Churches is a contact organization for the churches of South Africa and functions as a National Committee for the World Council of Churches.

By the way, if you've never attended an evening service at Grace Cathedral, give it the old college try!

Last night's scripture-reading was particularly uplifting.

In particular, I found that the "sounding" of the bell" - which chimed periodically throughout the service - resonated to the core of my being.

The "Alleluia" refrain - sung to perfection by the choir and parishioners - caused hearts, minds, and spirits to soar joyously!

The Contemplative Eucharist is calendared for Sundays @ 6 p.m.

The Gala was hosted by Diana Williams of ABC Eyewitness News.

Academy Award- nominated actress Rosie Pérez attended.

Dancing with the Stars...Pam nearly a goner! Beach Boy tribute with Stamos a highlight!

Shortly after the lights went up on the stage of "Dancing with Stars" tonight - the jolts and surprises -  packed a couple of hard-hitting whallops.

Pam Anderson (myself included) was stunned by the news that after the vote count was tallied from the viewing audience that she was relegated to the bottom two!

 And, wonders never ceased!

Buzz Aldrin must have crapped in his pants - when he was given the nod to return next week - in spite of a poor showing with the Judges last night.

Fans demonstrated the obvious!

Wowing audiences at home with dazzling costumes and fancy footwork doesn't always hold sway with fans entirely!

Tugging their heart-strings appears to be the key to scoring big with music-lovers around the country.

But Buzz is no fool!

"The Judges were right," he chuckled (about his performance)

"I was patriotic and served my country. My friends in the space program probably had something to do with this."

When Pamela was quizzed about what happened (???) her response was short and sweet.

"Whoops!"

At this juncture, producers opted to build the suspense by prolonging the outcome.

Fox sparked up the show with skits, a band performance, and a peek at the daily routine of competent co-hosts Brooke Burke and seasoned pro Tom Bergeron.

Shots of Brooke rehearsing lines with Tom, in the make-up room, and announcing contestants on a mic backstage as they sauntered down the stairs into the glare of the spotlight, were a fascinating look at life back stage.

"When I chat with the contestants, that is not scripted. So, I try to engage in a real conversation."

The Beach Boys - considered to be one of America's all-time favorite (best) bands - brought back alot of nostalgia with their hot performance of  "Fun Fun Fun".

Former Soap  star - John Stamos - wowed the folks in attendance with a solid stint on the drums.

In fact, the gig triggered a prolonged standing ovation, that didn't look like it would ever end.

In a hilarious colorful sketch, Len - outfitted as Moses - cited the ten commandments at Fox's hit show
to be mindful of.

For example - Thou shalt not do lifts, Thou shalt not have rhinestones, and Thou shalt honor the judges - were stand-out no-no segments that hit my funnybone.

In a fun twist, the professional dancers (the hired instructors coaching the contestants) were rustled up to dance a special number - with the ultimate aim of letting them strut their stuff - so contestants could see what "dance" was all about.

The vastly entertaining segment was - sexy, upbeat, spirited, choreographed well - and somewhat  reminiscent of boy-band slick schtick.

The light show dazzled!

There were jokes about Bruno and Elton John tom-catting around in France.

"Elton & Bruno loose in Southern France in the carefree eighties? Why, they must have bagged every chick in town," the commentator chuckled.

When a staffer strode up and whispered in his ear, a shocked look spread across his face.

"Elton John, too?" he asked increduously.

On the heels of the recent announcement by Ricky Martin that he is "gay" - the wicked humor was timely - and well-received by the open-minded guests.

In a solemn segment a troup of dancers from Haiti (sponsored by Macys) gave tribute to the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Interested viewers were invited to visit the web site and contribute funds.

www.abettercommunity.com

Neicy (who was saved and will appear next week) giggled that all the tension made her both anxious and hungry at the same time!

At the close of the show, I breathed a sigh of relief; after all, Pamela Anderson (my fave dancer) was spared the axe!

When I checked twitter, I noticed right off-the-bat, that follower Shannon Tweed posted info on how to vote for Pamela in upcoming segments.

Guess Shannon was worried too!

Because Pam was saved  it meant another hoofer went home in her stead.

Unfortunately, Shannon Doherty was a victim of the unkind fickle finger of fate.

"I'm not a dancer," she confided to  the hosts.

The journey was a fulfilling one for her, though.

As it turns out, it worked out for the best.

Yesterday, her partner tore a muscle off the bone during their performance, and would have left Shannon in a lurch with a new partner to trip-the-light fantastic with in future episodes.

Not a pretty prospect, she fessed up.

In a touching closing moment, all the dancers swarmed over the likeable twosome, and smothered them with hugs!

'Til next week, eh?

Anderson Cooper...Silver Fox to seek lair @ CBS! Rumors persist...

On the airwaves this morning, disc jockeys were chatting each other up over an alleged insider "tip" that Anderson Cooper - a mainstay over at CNN for a handful of years now - may fly the coop!

Was the initial invite for Anderson Cooper to contribute to 60 Minutes (the CBS flagship ratings-getter) a sly overture to pave the way for the "Silver Fox" to transition his way over to the competing network?

Some say, yes!

According to pulse-takers and media watchdogs, CBS News executives have their sights set on the handsome bachelor, who has an apparent festish for work-out gyms and wet spandex tightie-whities.

Post:  06/06/08

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2008/06/anderson-cooperunderwear-fetish-gay.html

With a foot in the door now, it's just a matter of time before Anderson may choose to casually seque into a full-fledged role shaping the news format at CBS by way of an anchor post.

Some astute observers have noted over the past twenty-four hours that Katie Couric’s contract expires in a year or so - and that the time is ripe - to approach the rising media star stirring up ratings at CNN.

His high-profile coverage of the Haiti disaster hasn't been anything to sniff at, for starters.

Although a meeting allegedly took place months ago, some naysayers are pooh-poohing the notion that there is a behind-the-scenes play for Anderson to sign on the dotted line.

Some sources are boldly conjecturing that CBS Executives are pining for Mr. Cooper to replace Ms. Couric.

That sword works both ways for CBS.

Even if Cooper is not interested in jumping ship - any activity (surreptitious or otherwise) that hints negotiations are underway - may force Katie Couric's hand!

Meanwhile, CNN appears to be putting out fires in the wake of the media storm.

"The rumors that Cooper recently met with CBS News regarding an anchor position are false," a spokesperson at CNN asserted in so many words at the beginning of the week.

"He is not engaged in any additional conversations with them (CBS) beyond those necessary for his continuing role on 60 Minutes," he added with finality.

Will the grey-haired wonder utter up a comment or two to set the record straight?

Big-Budget Disaster film...slated for fall release!

On the heels of the morning jitters here in Hollyweird and a raft of unrelenting wild fires that swept out-of-control in recent days throughout California, one of the major studios has hatched the idea of producing a big-budget disaster film based on two box-office hits - "Earthquake" and "Towering Inferno".

The project slated for release in the fall is tentatively titled:

"Shake & Bake"

Ah, gotcha!
