Dining Out For Life...fundraiser for A.I.D.S. on April 28th! Subaru sponsored!



If you're planning to head out and dine around town on April 28th, why not participate in an annual event - "Dining Out for Life" - which is co-sponsored by Subaru?

Participating restaurants - over 3500 in number around the United States - are donating a generous percentage of each meal served on that day to an AIDS service organization.

Last year more than 250,000 participants helped raise nearly $4 million dollars!

In exchange for their financial support restaurants are listed in a city wide marketing campaign in an effort to increase customer traffic.

Dining Out For Life® was created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia in 1991.

Since then, dozens of high profile personalities have stepped up to promote the worthy cause.

For example, Ted Allen - the host of Food Network’s hit series "Chopped" - has been quite vocal about the project for good reason.

"It s more important than ever to keep HIV/AIDS on the front burner. Too many people think it's a minor problem solved by swallowing a few pills. It isn't. Second, while supporting local restaurants, chefs, and restaurant workers, Dining Out for Life donations help those right in the same community. Finally, the event gives everybody a chance to make a meaningful contribution to the cause in such a simple way," he noted in a recent press release."

Although much about the disease has changed over the past 30 years, the fact remains that an estimated 1.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, nearly half without appropriate healthcare.

With one in five people not even realizing they are infected, it is estimated that 60,000 new HIV infections will occur in the U.S. this year, with the majority under age 29.

Now is the time for caring individuals to step up-to-bat!

“This country is trying desperately to recover from the recession, and the people who used to donate or volunteer at food banks and soup kitchens now are struggling to feed their own families. It is more important than ever for those of us who are able, to donate time and resources.”

If you're in the market for a computer, and on a budget, don't bother to stroll into  a "Goodwill" outlet looking for a bargain.

For good reason!

The charity is known to sell broken IBM Think Pads to unsuspecting victims

Ironically, Goodwill employees distribute a business card with the following outlandish slogan printed in bold-face on the front:

"We create solutions to poverty through the Business we operate."

Bullsh**!

The only opportunity they provide is a deceitful scam that enables employees to rip-off poor innocent consumers!

Just this weekend, for example, one customer snapped up a laptop for $225.00, returned home, and right-off-the-bat was embroiled in endless hard drive problems that he was unable to resolve.

Also, the customer noticed (after stopping for a lunch break to gobble up some finger food) that there were traces of unknown "chemicals" on his fingertips after typing on the keyboard for a few hours.

Yikes!

But, because of a so-called Goodwill "policy" promised at the point of sale,the consumer was not inclined to worry.

All the shopper had to do on his end was promptly take back the merchandise with the receipt, right?

After all, Goodwill promises a thirty-day money-back guarantee.

Not!

When the hapless customer trotted back to the outlet at 1500 Mission Street in downtown San Francisco, he not only got the run-around, but the dishonest staff tried to foist another useless piece of "junk" on him.

But, second-time-around the shopper wised up.

Before exiting the store with the iffy exchange, the once-burned (twice-shy) customer requested that the technician flip open the laptop and rev it up.

OMG!

The second IBM Think Pad (on sale for $225) was also a lemon.

The welcome page splashed to life, then - the dusty screen - went black.

Embarrassed, the Goodwill technician tried to shrug off the obvious.

The charity is is trying to sell broken-down computers to customers for a hefty profit.

And now, the Goodwill supporter was faced with a dilemma.

The Manager refused to give cash back in spite of the fact their computers were obviously not up to snuff or worth the asking price.

And, to the amazement of the customer - the Manager never even showed any remorse - whatsoever.

Without blinking-an-eye, she gruffly issued a credit for the $225, and informed the disgruntled customer that they would have to wait until a new shipment of PC's were delivered to the outlet at Van Ness and Mission Street in downtown San Francisco.

When the customer pointed out they were behind in their work schedule, and needed a computer right away, she barked back at the customer that they were essentially SOL.

So, the victim strode off to the Corporate Office next door to complain, where he summarily got the run-around there, too.

For example, when an employee put in a call to the Manager of the complaint department (a woman by the name of Mandysa Lyons) she was nowhere to be found!

How convenient!

In spite of promises that a call would be returned that afternoon, the Goodwill staffer has - thus far - failed to follow through.

Meanwhile, no one in the Corporate Office has lent a sympathetic ear, or offered up any constructive advice to make ammends.

Does that sound like "GOOD WILL" to you?

Notwithstanding, it should be noted that In their advertisements, Goodwill boasts that they are working together with other organizations in the neighborhood (Planet Green, for instance) to raise awareness about the positive impact donations make.

Yeah, it is pretty profitable to stock a broken computer on the shelf for free, then sell it to an unsuspecting consumer for $225.00 without guilt or shame.

What a scam, eh?

As the customer started to head out the door, he really got angry when he spied Goodwill's latest slick advert on a side-counter with a caption that screamed out at him:

"What fab Goodwill finds have you discovered today?"

The customer just about went berserk.

Talk about false, misleading, and erroneous advertising!

Goodwill is just another outrageous corporate rip-off , which passes itself off as a charitable organization - when, in fact - the second-hand-shop doesn't care about the community or its impoverished customers.

It's all about Corporate "greed"!

I say avoid Goodwill like the plague.

The employees are a bunch of scam artists at-the-ready to taking advantage of the disadvantage without conscience or any sense of morality.

White House calls rocker!

Youthful rocker Bon Jovi - still kicking around the concert trail and delighting music fans far-and-wide - has been selected by President Barack Obama to slip into a coveted seat on a White House panel that will seek to bring together individuals, organizations, businesses, and non-profits - with the specific aim of identifying and addressing community outreach needs.

No doubt it was Jovi's high-profile invovlement with his own stellar "Jovi Soul Foundation" that was the lure for our beleaguered President.

After all, the dynamic stage performer - with the sexy rocker persona - helped create affordable housing for low-income families and individuals through the auspices of the altruistic organization he started up and currently presides over.

Fans may recall that the charismatic pop icon also tossed a fundraiser for Obama during the President's bid for office which may account for the untraditional coupling of two - um - odd bedfellows.

Jovi is expected to knock heads with - educators, religious leaders, entrepreneurs (and so forth-and-so-on) - in his new role which should prove to be quite challenging in view of the currect political, social, and economic climate!

Singers of the Street...sing for Justice & Joy! San Francisco troupe uplifts spirits!

On this past trip to San Francisco, I was delighted to stumble on a patio area- scattered with a handful of table and chairs - that has been constructed at the corner of 17th & Castro (where the quaint old European Street cars turn-a-bout to head back downtown).

For years, this corner was quite an eyesore, and amounted to a wasted desolate space.

Now, the busy corner is populated by an effervescent cross-section of locals and tourists alike - who stop and mingle - with the ultimate aim of taking a brief respite from the hectic bustling streets.

As I plunked myself down in the lazy afternoon sun, I spied one gentleman toss of his shirt, to catch a few rays in a bold-faced hedonistic attempt to perfect a  golden tan.

For me, it was a great perch to take notes on the San Francisco scene, as the world - full of life and vitality - passed by.

At one point, my spirits were lifted considerably, when a rag-tag band of street minstels strode up.

The street performers - who referred to themselves as S.O.S. (Singers of the Street) - proceeded to hand out flyers about their entertaining venture - as they coaxed by-standers to join in and sing for Justice and Joy.

Every Wednesday, S.O.S. meets between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to spread  their unique brand of comfort to the down-and-out in need of boot-strappiing up in these troubling economic times.

The generous motley crew is a San Francisco-based community choir that provides a voice, a face, and a place for seeking justice, healing, and joy for those living on the margins of society (especially folks who are homeless) according to their mission statement.

In addition to the opportunity to spread joy, participants enjoy  other perks, too.

A free lunch is provided to the dedicated few who attend rehearsals, for starters!

Ribbon of LIfe...HIV fundraiser draws Vegas talent! Golden rainbow provides housing!

Tomorrow afternoon the annual "Ribbon of Life" fundraiser kicks off with the largest roster of talent yet lending their talents to raise funds for HIV afflicted individuals in the community.

Performers slated for the line-up include those from the casts of  Zumanity, Viva Elvis, Love, Peepshow, and the Lion King - to name a few.

Funds will be raised for Golden Rainbow, a non-profit in the Vegas area, which provides housing and financial assistance for those with HIV.

Each year, the successful efforts of Rainbow assists upwards of 600 men, women, and children.

Golden Rainbow owns and operates eight two-bedroom apartments and a 3-bedroom home.

This year, more than ever, Rainbow needs to succeed in their fundraising efforts because there is a bigger need for their services in 2010.

"People that never required services before ae coming out and asking for help," one  spokesman noted in recent days.

Prince William's younger bro has his sights on returning to these shores at the end of June, according to Buckingham Palace.

The 25-year-old  - third in line to the Royal Throne - will participate in the much-awaited annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic slated for June 27 on Governor's Island in New York Harbor.

The boisterous freckled-face Prince will challenge Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras.

Fans of Nacho will be clammering to get up-close-and-personal with the studly athlete who graces splashy fashion spreads in his plum role as a Ralph Lauren model.

The high-profile event - sure to be the social soiree of the year - will benefit the illustrious American Friends of Sentebale which is the U.S. arm of the global charity co-founded by Harry.

The well-respected charity supports impoverished children of Lesotho in southern Africa.

Madonna, Kate Hudson and LL Cool J. were drawn to the classic last year like moths to a flame.

Just maybe, Lady Gaga will saunter into the chi chi partay and stir up the status quo a tad?

The All Stars Project held its National Gala Benefit on April 12th at the David H. Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center.

Titled - "Out of Crisis Helping the World's Youth to Grow" - the high-profile event raised $3 million dollars for After School Development.

The Gala was hosted by Diana Williams of ABC Eyewitness News.

Academy Award- nominated actress Rosie Pérez attended.

The organizers announced the formation of  a $9.2 million expansion campaign for the All Stars Project of New Jersey which includes creating The Scott H. Flamm Center for Development Afterschool in downtown Newark.

The event also honored hedge-fund industry leader, Elliott Management Corporation.

I logged in to Twitter at the close of "Dancing with the Stars" last night when I spied a tweet that Shannon Tweed just posted (we follow each other) on the subject of Autism.

"Don't forget that April is Autism month."

Shannon also underscored that April 2nd (Friday) is World Autism Awareness Day.

The subject of Autism is close to Ms. Tweed's heart since one of her own children is autistic.

World Autism Awareness Day shines a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis, according to the organizers.

WAAD activities help to increase and develop world knowledge of the autism epidemic and impart information regarding the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention.

Additionally, WAAD celebrates the unique talents and skills of persons with autism and is a day when individuals with autism are warmly welcomed and embraced in community events around the globe.

Prince William...sleeps rough in slums! Homeless plight triggers compassion in Royal son...

To the shelter born!

Unlike most spoiled rich kids - born with silver spoons in their mouths - Prince William has managed to keep his feet on the ground and have compassion on the less fortunate.

A case in point?

This past week, in the dead  of winter, the handsome young Royal - Princess Diana's eldest son - braved the hardships of the desperate streets in the slums of London to better understand the plight of the homeless..

Wills was not entirely alone, however.

Seyi Obakin (a represenative from a homeless charity by the name of Centrepoint that the Prince is a patron of) agreed to tag along and hold forte alongside the Prince at Blackfriar's Bridge in a seamy part of town where the hands-on all-night vigil took place..

The idea for William to spend a night on the streets - known as "sleeping rough" in Britain - was drummed up earlier this year.

Obakin commended the young Prince for taking it upon himself to embark on the painful journey in an unselfish effort to better understand the full range of problems a homeless young person might face in the mean streets of the city.

A candid still taken by the Charity - a shot of Prince William in a gray hooded jacket, jeans, and knit hat hiding his lovable mug - imparted the image of a regular street urchin down-on-his-luck.

Maybe Wills should take up acting?

All kidding aside, Obakin admitted to the media that it certainly was not fun and games, by any stretch of the imagination.

"It was a scary experience," he blurted out to all within earshot.

"Out of my comfortable bed. Out there in the elements. Out there on an extremely cold night, with down to minus 4 C (24.8 F) temperatures. And it was the same for Prince William. But he was determined to do it."

Although the adventurous twosome found a secluded spot - hidden behind a riot of worn garbage bins where they would hopefully escape detection - the stark night was still demanding on their psyches nonetheless.

"There was no shielding from the bitter cold, or the hard concrete floor, or the fear of being accosted by drug dealers, pimps or those out to give homeless people a 'good' kicking," Obakin noted for the record.

What did the Royal charge take away from the experience first hand?

"I cannot, after one night, even begin to imagine what it must be like to sleep rough on London's streets night after night," William noted with heartfelt emotion to reporters.

"Poverty, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependancy and family breakdown cause people to become and then stay homeless."

In sum, it appears that Lady Diana's tireless efforts on behalf of charitable causes impacted her son, who now follows faithfully in her Saintly footsteps..

In spite of the dalliances, though, Prince William appears to have his heart set on a more macho line of work, as a rought-and-tumble Royal Air Force search-and-rescue pilot.

He'll cut a fine swath, for sure!

Daniel Radcliffe...Harry Potter actor donates to Trevor Project!

Harry Potter star - who makes hearts go pitter-patter judging by the voluminous frenetic hits at my site - is not only savoring a successful career in the film industry (and a glittering social life) but now adds the title of fundraiser and humanitarian to his impressive resume.

This past week, the doey-eyed Radcliffe (who recently wowed 'em in the New York stage production of Equus) surprised the Trevor Project by gifting them with a hefty donation that truly makes a difference.

The Trevor project is one of the most-respected organizations which mans a twenty-four hour helpline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youths questioning their sexuality and overall self-worth.

The Trevor Project's Circle of Hope, the actor is now actively participating in, is a community of high-profile donors who play a crucial role in providing essential financial leadership to the Trevor Project.

A Trevor Survival Kit funded by the organization is distributed to schools and youth service providers to help educators facilitate discussions about suicide , gender identity, and sexual orientation .

Trevor Space, on the other hand, is an online social networking community for LGBTQ youth, their friends, and allies.

According to spokesperson, Charles Robbins, Radcliffe's gift will help fund the aforementioned programs.

The Max Cure Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 whose mission is to fund pediatric cancer causes.

Dine at an elegant restaurant and - at the same time - raise funds for the homeless and individuals and families impoverished by HIV/AIDS!

The annual event is - GO EAT Los Angeles - and kicks off tomorrow on February 26th.

This is how it works.

Chow down at a Los Angeles restaurant and the proprietors will donate 20% or more of their day's receipts to Aid the AIDS-inflicted.

According to the organizers, this is an easy way to support the HIV/AIDS community.

You have to eat, right?

So, when you hop in the car - and head out to squelch that hunger pang in your stomach (during the breakfast, lunch, or dinner hour) - select an eatery from the "Go Eat Los Angeles" list of participating restaurants.

No excuses!

'Cause there are plenty of participating establishments serving up delectable meals in West Hollywood, Silverlake, Hollywood, Long Beach, Pasadena, West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and the Valley (you go, girl!).

Prince Harry & Prince William...pursue studly adventure in name of charity!

Two Princely studs are on their way to the Great Horn (or thereabouts) to rustle up a fortnight of ballsy pleasure!

In the name of charity - Prince Harry (the scrapper with freckles and red hair) and Prince William (the classy one) - will be hitting the trails of South Africa.

Obviously, there be a spill or two on the hazardous terrain.

But, the boisterous lads are prepared for that.

There's a wager among 'em as to who has the most seaworthy legs.

Funds raised during the thousand-mile hairspin jaunt through the jungle wilds will be divied up so that UNICEF, the Mandela Children's Fund, and Sentebale (fun-loving Harry's pet project) receive an equal lion's share of the proceeds.

For those of who are biting your nails - and concerned about the safety of the Princely charges - rest assured.

Both of the thrill-seekers are experienced bikers.

According to informed sources, each rides a high performance motorcycle in Britain.

No word on whether there will be any bodyguards in tow!


I expect a handful of the Queen's protective forces will be lurking behind every bush along the trecherous path and hot on their trail pursuant to the Queen's Royal directive.

Along with a gaggle of paparazzi and nubile young virgins seeking their fortunes, too, I expect.
