Canucks...riots in mellow "pothead" town of Vancouver a shocker! Peace & Love, dude!

Having resided in Vancouver (B.C.) for approximately ten years during my rebellious hippie youth, I was quite shocked when the news footage of riots in the picturesque respite by the sea flooded the airwaves on nightly-news shows this past week.

As comic Jay Mohr noted last night on a talk-show, Vancouver has always been "home" to a multitude of peace-loving anti-war potheads.

So, what gives?

What elements have crept into the fabric of society on the normally gentle Pacific Northwest Coast to trigger such an alarming violent reaction to a loss at a mere sports match?

I have always been proud of the fact "us" Canadians tend to be neutral, cool-headed, and all-round good sportsmen when it gets down to the nitty-gritty.

I expect that pundits North of the border - in the wake of the tragic turn-of-events - are blaming American influences from south of the border, shadowy foreign upstarts with ulterior motives lurking in the shadows, whatever.

If what happened this past week is a sign of what Canada is all about these days, for sure, I prefer to reside in the United States.

Even if I do miss the strong Canadian beer!

American brews suck, after all!

Later!

San Francisco Giants...Sports News Alert! Cardinals nab it! Sunday April 10th!

Word out of the AT & T ballpark a few moments ago is that the Cardinals nabbed it in their vigorous fight against the Giants on their home turf.

The World Champions were unable to complete their first 3-game sweep of the Cardinals since 2001.

The loss dulled the spirit of the frenzied fans in the crowded stands a tad - but they're a hearty lot - and capable of riding the rollercoast ride ahead.

Hold onto your baseball caps, kids, it's going to be a bumpy night or two ahead on the slippery slope to the 2nd World Championship!

Trevor Bayne...rocky-road inspired Ice-Cream Sundae! Daytona 500 star celebrates at Ghiradelli Square! San Francisco!

What is the world's favorite flavor?

The answer was on the tip of Trevor Bayne's tongue yesterday, when he swaggered into Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco, to whip up a scrumptious mouth-watering ice-cream Sundae in his honor.

Chocolate, of course!

Well, when it came to the studly race-car driver (who just snagged the Daytona 500), for starters!

Shortly after the man-of-the-hour was ushered into the historic tourist site, he quickly rustled up the main ingredients for his dessert-of-choice, which consisted of generous scoops of rich chocolate, a dollop or two of delicious rocky-road, and flavorful chocolate chip ice-cream - topped with all the delicious trimmings such as whipped cream, a cherry on top - you name it!

Since Bayne roared over the finish line this past week - the youngest driver ever to nab the coveted prize (at a mere twenty years-of-age) - he has been on a wild merry-go-round that has taken the kid from ESPN studios in Connecticut, to Chicago, and then on to the Bay area where he alighted amidst a lot of fanfare.

Fans couldn't help but spy the sparkler on his finger, either!

Of course, I am referring to the pricey Daytona 500 ring, he scooped up for his efforts on the slippery-slope to success.

The sexy circuit competitor joked that he wears the novelty item to bed when he tucks in each starry-eyed night.

"I was scared I'd wake up in the middle of the night and it would all be a dream. I left it on so I could look down and see it."

And, you thought your life was a potential nightmare, eh?

Congrats Trevor!

San Francisco Giants...Champions! Torture ends for fans! Start Believin'...

Giants torture ends!

A "strike" said it all!

Game over.

The trick became a treat as Giants shut out the Texas Rangers for a 2nd time in 2 days in what has now become known as "fright night" for the Texas ballplayers.

On to Game 5!

On Monday night, fans nearly knocked me off my perch in a quaint pub off Castro Street, when lightning struck - with big closer Brian Wilson - at the helm.

Patrons literally jumped for joy!

High-fives, raucous back slaps, and a slew of brewskies downed with exotically-named shots, became the order of the day!

On Sunday, what was the general consensus?

It wasn't a case of if - but rather - when!

Would the Giants cinch the pennant in Arlington or in a sixth or seventh game on home turf in San Francisco?

Although a win at AT& T ballpark was preferable - from a par-tay mode point-of-view - most were in ecstatic accord.

"Let's get it done."

A handful of sports enthusiasts remained wishy-washy - waxed philosophically - at times.

But, Tim Linescum was straight-forward in his approach and made no bones about it, when he was ambushed in the parking lot on the trek to the stadium.

"We're here to nail it," he barked with an air of authority.

Uh-huh!

Tensions had been mounting for days.

"Torture," is the way many fans described the gut-wrenching prevailing mood leading up to the mighty 5th.

Others were ready for the task at hand.

"Bring it on."

Two Nuns - Texas Ranger ticket-holding fans since 1972 - had one practical word of advice for the locals.

"Pray!"

The hour had come!

And, there wasn't any two ways about it.

If the Giants nabbed the trophy that evening, a big blow-out would bust out on the West Coast - and take center stage - at AT & T park (and elsewhere, natch).

A raucous posse of fans were camped out at Britannia's Pub in San Jose, for instance, pining for the nail-biting cliffhanger to end their way.

Meanwhile, on the heels of the spectacular shut-outs over the weekend, Mayor Newsom quickly scrambled on the sidelines to ensure that a humongous wide screen was erected downtown (in the reflected light of the glowing "orange" dome atop City Hall) in time to broadcast Monday Night's high-profile match at the Civic Center for locals and tourists alike to take in.

By noon, the plaza was awash in orange and black, as sports fanatics streamed in to snatch up a coveted spot to catch the fifth game on the World Series roster.

At Willie Mays Plaza, on the other hand, fans were surging forward in unruly queues, in a bold-faced effort to snap up memorabilia to don for the big event just hours away.

T-shirts (etched with slogans like "I see Orange People", "Got Panda", "Fear the Beard"), ubiquitous jaunty ball caps, and nifty miniature-size towels flew off the shelves at break-neck speed (at premium prices, I might add).

Above the madding crowds, posters and fliers transmitted encouraging slogans that resonated, and boosted the morale of San Franciscans everywhere near and far.

"Go! Giants! Go!"

Game 5 roared along at a fast clip, so much so, that it was difficult to keep up with my notes!

Even still, by the 4th inning, I was embarrassed to have to relay the score to inquisitive strangers, who trotted up quizzing me for updates.

Zilch to Zilch!

No wonder.

Tim Linescum's fastballs were being clocked at 93 mph.

Anxious (fearful?) Texans couldn't see the ball whizzing by, let alone get a crack at it (for the most part).

Because of it, Linescum rose to Super-star status in the eyes of the fans, early on in the battle for supremacy on the field.

You betcha!

The athlete of-the-hour (a two-time Cy Young Award Winner) picked off the players one-by-one - in what must have been a surreal baseball scenario for the batters - unfortunate to have to stand up to his fastball wrath.

Linescum's pitching was perfect, precise.

Understandably, I won't dwell on his "bad-hair" day!

He had a lot more on his mind than grooming, folks.

When Madison Bumgarner stepped up to the pitcher's mound, the fans were still in awe over Sunday Night's dazzling stellar performance in a shut-out game, that goes down in the annals of Sports History for a myriad of reasons.

The 21 year old pitcher was the 4th youngest player in that heady position to play the World Series.

"Madison looks like a big kid, but he's mature for his age," noted a supportive team mate.

On the mound, he was all business, as he stared the batters down.

"Mental warfare," one fan next to me chortled, when I pointed out the intensity of it all, which must have been off-putting to less-seasoned players a little wet behind-the-ears.

The game proved to be a night of balls (off the wall, flubbed miserably, over-the-wall spinningly), sacrifices (Aubrey Huff went down for the 1st time in his ball career for the sake of the team), and strike-outs (plenty of 'em pitched stingingly by 26 year old Tim Lincescum in his best game ever in the glare of the spotlight).

There were a few embarrassing moments, too.

Mitch Moreland, for instance, dropped a ball on 1st base in the 5th inning which raised a few eyebrows.

Huh?

A couple of strike-outs didn't fair well with critics either, who - until the weekend - were singling the kid out for super-star status on the diamond horizon.

Throughout the game, Giants fans kept the team spirit alive - and thumping - from the bleachers even though they weren't on home green.

In tandem with a melodious organ - which spewed out a few whimsical musical notes in advance - the revellers sang out in chorus:

"Let's go, Giants!"

In contrast to the Texas Ranger fans (a rather tame lot who often preferred clenching their hands with pals to punching the air with pointed gestures) the Giants' backers hooted and hollered the entire match throughout the electrically-charged starry-eyed night.

Did they beat the Ranger's fans into submission, perhaps?

In town - at pubs and cafes - sports enthusiasts packed cozy environs hell-bent on catching every sizzling move unfolding before them on state-of-the-art high-tech screens.

They were hopeful.

The last time the Giants won was way back in 1954.

The image of Willie Mays waving from an open convertible in a ticker-tape parade is still a memorable one.

When Brian Wilson struck out a Texas Ranger in the 9th - to cinch the pennant - the fans went wild, jumped for joy, and hugged everyone (and thing) in sight.

Shortly after Linescum darted onto the field to congratulate his fellow ballplayers, he was hoisted up on a dozen or so broad shoulders, and touted as one of the big heroes of the day.

But, the cameras zoomed in on Edgar Renteria shortly after that.

Being named MVP (Most Valuable Player) was an ironic end scenario for the humbled player.

When Renteria was signed months ago for $18 million, critics lamented it was allegedly a waste of money, because the ball player was a "washed-up short-stop" without any future worth.

The seasoned Pro hung in there, though, and eventually the twisted finger of fate pointed his way.

With two outs in the 7th inning - and Cody Ross and Juan Uribe on base - Renteria knocked a 2-0 cut fastfall from Cliff Lee over the wall in left-center field for a three-run homer that helped secure the outcome.

"I knew something was going to come up," he fessed up to one reporter later.

Sports professionals summed up sizzling Game 5 this way:

"The best pitchers beat the best batters."

In fact, Linescum's performance was being hailed as "Masterful".

Tim became the 15th Pitcher in history to win four games in one postseason.

It came as no surprise to Buster Posey who took notice of his demeanour early on in the night.

"It's called being a gamer...the guy was loose as can be, joking around, same old Timmy...he had no idea he had the opportunity to go out and win Game 5 of the World Series and win us a championship."

One reporter asked the Ram Power Player if he ever dreamed of being a "funky pitcher" in the World Series when he was lad.

"No. I wanted to be a batter," 'Tim confessed shyly.

Across the field, there were glum faces all 'round in the Texans Ranger locker room.

In spite of the humiliating outcome - the club Manager and his staff - were able to muster up a truism.

"It's not the best team that wins. It's the team that plays best."

The powers-that-be at the Texas ball club congratulated the Giants for a game well-played, hard-fought, and earned from the get-go.

Can 'ya fathom that?

Early on in the season, the Giants were often teased for exuding an aura of being a gang of cast-offs and misfits.

Freddie Sanchez laughed at the notion that he might be the President of such a team.

"Timmy made the night. He filled in the gap," he asserted with a grin on his face.

General Manager Bruce Bochy noted low-key - and with a glint in his eye - that it was the versatility of the team as a whole that egged him on.

According to the seasoned handler, it was fun to shuffle around the talent.

The GM is the only one in San Francisco to sport a World Series ring, which prompted a reporter to ask if he would run for political office one day.

Shucks, no!

Bochy pooh-poohed the notion.

Just doing his job.

And well, I might add.

In the aftermath of the stunning cinch, thousands swarmed the streets drunk with euphoria, and at-the-ready to par-tay hearty.

Muni cable cars were adorned with toilet paper, fans danced with wild abandon in the streets, and die-hard sports-lovers continued to hoop and holler 'til the cows  - er - the Giants came home.

Yup!

At 4 o'clock in the morning, at the crack of dawn, the team was greeted with cheers and contrats!

Indeed, there was enough of a rumble in the streets to trigger the next big one!

Dennis Wilson thanked the fans.

"They waved towels, wore beards, and hair," he chuckled.

"World Championship hair," he added in an afterthought.

Tim Lincecum noted it had been fun.

"We were a crazy crew. The city's (support) made it easy. Wearing my hair and panda heads," he laughed appreciatively.

The old axiom proved to be true.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

"It took a lot of pitches to get here. Mechanics were important. Going thru ruts in August," he admitted off-the-cuff with a little musing.

When asked about the switcheroo's during the season, he was quick on the uptake.

"We made adjustments when necessary."

On Wednesday, there will be a ticker-tape parade in downtown San Francisco, because of the had-won battles on the field over the past stretch in the World Series play-offs.

Mayor Gavin Newsom is slated to hand off the keys of the city to the San Francisco Giants, too.

Buster Posy thought the whole outcome was "cool".

The kid was down-to-earth - and classy - to the end.

As Tim drove off into the dark night early this morning in a silver Mercedes Benz with bow tie correctly knotted in place, it was evident we hadn't heard (or seen) the last of him (or the Giants).

In fact, today's paper is boasting a full page ad, for next year's season tickets.

Snatch 'em up.

They'll be goners, soon, if last night's phenomenal parade of pride is any indication.

San Francisco Giants...held back by Rangers! Bush booed @ local pubs!

For a Saturday night, the downtown streets of San Francisco around midnight were pretty dismal, in spite of the fact a much-anticipated baseball match between the Texas Rangers and the Giants filled the local pubs to capacity with gung-ho fans earlier in the evening.

Though a few Halloween stragglers were still whooping it up at that witchy hour, a large percentage of the Giants backers packed it in early, limped home with glum faces and bats drooping between their legs.

In contrast, the night before - Union Square was packed with frenzied fans with stardust in their eyes - who partied up a storm after a stunning shut-out sports enthusiasts are still marvelling at a couple of days later.

A loss last night for the Giants narrowed a gap in the World Series bid (they lost 4 - 2) and now the Texas Rangers are breathing uncomfortably down the backs of the beards they once feared.

San Francisco's edge has been cut 2-1.

The fans were in quite a celebratory mood earlier in the afternoon when the day was ripe with promise, though.

When a camera panned in on Tim Lincecum, for instance, a squeal of enthusiastic delight rippled through the Castro District in response.

And, a handful of poignant - often upbeat shots (a teen-age boy dreamily eyeing the playing field, a bodacious babe trying to catch the eye of a studly ball player, front office staff sweating it out in the bleachers) inspired pub crawlers to reflect a bit, hoot - even holler - at the wide flat state-of-the-art screen charged with electricity on the memorabilia-filled walls corner-to-corner.

There were some choice hilarious moments, too.

When a network news team zoomed in close-up on George W. Bush - pulling for the Rangers in the bleachers - the rowdy bunch of Giants fans booed and hissed to beat the band.

"Guess the folks here are all Democrats," one by-stander quipped with a smirk on his face.

The struggle for supremacy on the field - unlike the shut-out the other evening - was hard fought.

But, once the Texas Rangers managed to get an edge, there was no looking back.

The Giants gave it the old college try - but when the fat lady sang later - there was no cigar for the little engine that once could (earlier in the series this past week).

Maybe the superstition about left-handed pitchers playing Arlington was true?

Even so, high-profile players - like Cody Ross - weren't going to be deterred from the task at hand.

His performance was pretty stellar at times, and thus, kept fans nail-biting on the edge of their hard bench seats in the stands.

Bad luck, though, when he hit a homer at a highpoint in the game.

The bases were empty, after all.

It was kind of like a shooting an empty load!

A surreal kind of baseball masturbation?

The Texas Rangers were in such top form, that it triggered the quote of the day, in the Lone Star State.

"Who needs the Cowboys when we have the Rangers?"

Mitch Moreland - in particular - was a stand out player last night.

With one easy swing, the bang-on hitter, sent a liner fast ball into the right field (as 3 players sat on bases)which resulted in a much-ballyhooed homer.

Talk about the roar of the crowd!

The response was deafening.

Uh-huh.

The Antler and the Claw were working their magic!

And, later today, what to expect?

Mitts off, for sure!

Go! Giants! Go!

Giants...the "Knot Hole" gang on top of game! Frisco in a fan frenzy!

Lincecum goes Hollywood in wake of super-star status

In the wake of sky-rocketting to hero status - and after the Giants cinched an edge-of-the-seat nail-biter against the rival Philadelphia basefull team - die-hard fans (and residents of San Franciso) are scrambling to deal with a big dilemma that looms on the horizon now.

How to snap up coveted tickets on the cheap for arguably the biggest sports event of the year at AT & T stadium on Wednesday afternoon?

On local news flashes all morning, reporters  are wailing that no-frills stand-up tickets are being scooped up at $450 a pop at a minimum.

Meanwhile, mediocre seats - out in the boondocks - are being snapped up for thousands  of dollars online - from scalpers in the streets - you name it.

Imagine the flourishing business revving up in Las Vegas as the much-anticipated play-off game approaches.

Some baseball fans are foregoing on hefty ticket prices for the Giant’s game, and electing to stand in line, to catch a ringside view of the diamond action from a little-known perch for free.

In an arched opening in the right field wall - known as the “Knot hole” - a posse of rag-tag fans will jockey for a position in a stand up space where the cost is zilch.

Before winning the match on the weekend, the locals - familiar with the "knot hole" - were predicting that there would be a frenzied gang of regulars - newbies, too - hot-footing it over to (what may become) the hottest non-ticketted ticket in town tomorrow.

I expect there will be a few strained necks and flared tempers as the crawl space starts brimming to capacity.

Pushy newcomers - who may have caught wind of the city's best-kept secret - may be put in their place with a quick rebuke by the regulars.

“We be here, first!”

So watch your toes - and backs - dudes!

The curious sports phenomenon didn't happen by chance, by the way.

The section of exposed playing field I am referring to - was part of an  original design built "in" - to  allow passers-by a golden opportunity to a catch a glimpse of the games from the street ( with the ultimate aim of getting more of the locals into the stands at premium prices).

In sum, the "peak hole" was fathomed up as a promotional tool.

To the club managers, the official name for the opening,  is the viewing portal.

Sunds kinky, doesn't it?

Or, is it just my dirty mind?

By the way, knot-holes (fans who frequent the hole-in-the-wall perch) are requied to follow a few practical rules - set down and enforded by Stadium Officials - so ensure  overzealous clods don't spoil the novel ball park experience for others.

Golden Knot-Hole Rules

*No drinking
*No dogs
*No folding chairs
*No cutting in line
*No hats (that block the view)

To ensure fans get an honest shot at a thrilling gander from the sidelines, a security moves along the sports enthusiasts every 3 innings.

The house employees note that it is not a problem nudging folks along, after all, the rag-tag band of Giants fans are keen on policing themselves anyhow to maintain the equilibrium.

A regular may direct a selfish knot-hole hog  to the back of the line without any hard feelings.

When polled, all knot-holers universally agreed it boils down to etiquette.

In this way, each individual is summarily treated with dignity and respect.

By following the golden rules, a patient fan may find themselves standing "this-close" to star athlete Cody Ross as he is trots by actively engaged in a history-making play on the field.

From this unique vantage point, emotional fans also are able to heckle a player, when the stakes get high.

Rattling the nerves of rivals may be a surefire way to gain a much-needed edge over the unsuspecting competition.

Apparently, the Guards can be sweet-talked, too.

Bribes - free coke, mouth-watering hotdogs, and even chips - may buy the ingratiating  fan another three innings because of their "thoughtfulness".

Finally, a bit of advice for the fan caught up in the heady moment.

Watch out for falling debris, eh?

Rowdy fans - with a few ales under their belt - may carelessly (or deliberately) fire cans over the sides of the stadium walls to cause a ruckus.

Also, keep a watchful eye out on street, mindful of  characters out to pick a fight.

Once tourists get wind of the  novel offbeat way to savor  the great american past-time in a romantic no-frills way, , they'll be screeching up to the curb by the busload.

Essentially the fun-filled experience is one for the have-nots, as one Wall Street Journal reporter quipped astutely.

And,  for the romantic few who don't mind roughing it, while saving a buck, too.

Play ball!

Giants...Pound Phillies! Cody Ross top dog!

Giants in your face!

Cody Ross delivered once again!

Clearly, the Giant's hero took the headlines in the morning daily to task.

POUND PHILLY!

They surely did - in an afternoon match on home turf - that drove the fans WILD!

Uh-huh!

The Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 today in San Francisco.

Now, the mighty diamond "Kings", boast a 2-1 lead in the NL championship series.

Cody Ross continued to ignite the crowds with his fancy ball-playing.

After homering three times in the first two games at Philadelphia, he could do no wrong, to the fans packed into the bleachers.

"He plays with no fear," manager Bruce Bochy barkd out on the sidelines.

"That's what you like about the guy."

Meanwile, the man-of-the-hour tried to keep a cool head.

"I'm just going up there trying to relax, stay calm, make something happen," Ross said.

A difficult task, to say the least.

The Giants have never won the World Series since moving lock-stock-and-barrel to San Francisco back in 1958.

They came close in 2002, but, no cigar!

The last time the Giants franchise won the World Series was 1954.

With hard work, a bit of perseverance - and some luck - the Giants will turn that factoid around in 2010.

Go! Giants! Go!

San Francisco Giants..."Freak" strikes out BRAVES! Fans storm stadium! Playoff # 2!

The "Freak" dominated with stylish delivery!

44,000 hyped-up hopped-up fans (the 2nd largest stadium turn-out in the past decade) packed the AT & T Sports arena to capacity last night - frenzied media hounds scrambled about on the sidelines to capture a dynamic publicity still or two for posterity's sake - and popular home-town athletes stormed on to victory to thunderous applause.

But, not without a little controversy, in the interim.

What appeared - at first -a bad call initially (on the heels of a fast high-and-wide throw) paved the way for an auspicious chain of events (comparable to a stack of dominos falling in tandem) that dove-tailed sweetly to seal the fate of an end scenario sports enthusiasts will be recalling with glowing tributes for decades to come.

For starters, pitcher - Tim Lincecum - was in spectacular form.

The lithe long-haired stud muffin held Atlanta at bay with 2 hits and a phenomenal fourteen strikes-outs.

"Tonight, he went out and pitched as fine a game as you can ptich," raved one baseball enthusiast.

The freak (he is nick-named so because of his exaggerated wind-up and individualistic delivery) dominated with a dynamic performance that never let up.

In spite of being singled out so expressly - as a one-man tour de force - fans and sports writers alike acknowledged that it was nothing short of spot-on teamwork that nabbed the match for the Giants in the first game of the series playoffs last night with such ease and grace.

Today, meanwhile, fans are ecstatic and chomping at the bit, as they gear up for another big night under a canopy of stars.

And - the Giants intend to sport their Orange Jersey's - to celebrate in true Friday night tradition!

Round 2!

Uh-huh.

Sold out!

But, not to worry - loyal die-hard fans, a smattering of local and National celebrities, and handful of high-profile double-talking politicians - already have their hot little tickets in hand.

News of the outcome at 11!

GIANTS...boost local economy! Big week in Frisco!

The San Francisco GIANTS not only scored big with fans when they maneuvered a lucky strike and landed a coveted spot in the playoffs over the weekend, but also won over a posse of the locals, who are hailing the athletes as heroes for boosting San Francisco's otherwise ailing economy.

Since lightning struck on Sunday, business owners - at pubs and trendy restaurants situated in the bustling city streets next to the stadium - have elatedly been boasting that sales receipts have soared.

One  thrilled Hotel managed noted that they were booked to near capacity days before the much-anticipated game on Thursday loomed closer on the horizon.

A waitress at one eatery was also forced to run ragged in the wake of the big win.

"Diners have doubled in numbers," she beamed.

Of course, for her, that equates to a surge in cash tips!

Memorabilia sales for the GIANTS are pretty brisk, too, according to sources.

And, of course, ticket sales are going through the roof!

Some prized seats are garnering $1200 a pop at last count.

By the end of the week, San Francisco will be sitting pretty, especially when you figure in the Blue Angels.

The jets - a popular draw for tourists and locals alike - flew a test run over the city's picturesque skyscrapers the other evening - and touch down for closer scrutiny this weekend.

A scheduled "wirless" convention - slated to attract 15,000  - should end up filling the last suite available in the downtown city core.

I expect the johnny-come-lately's will have to lay out a bed roll under a canopy of stars!

Life is good!

Michael Phelps...Golden Boy nabs 100 fly in record time @ U.S.Championships! Glide to 50th win!

Michael Phelps - still the most exciting swim athlete to keep an eye on in this or any other relevant swim competition now or in the future - glided to an easy powerful win in the 100 meter Butterfly on Thursday at the U.S. Championships in tony Irvine (CA).

The multi-Olympic champion stroked to the finish line in excellent form - and a heady victory - to nab his 50th United States National swimming title.

Earlier in the week, in spite of two exciting wins (200 meter freestyle & 200 meter Butterfly), Phelps grumbled about his physical performance (the kid wasn't too happy about his timing, either) but was all smiles today as he spun himself up out of the pool with a satisfied look on his handsome chiselled face.

200 Meter Freestyle

200 Meter Butterfly

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/08/michael-phelpswins-butterfly.html

There was much to be overjoyed about (fans were ecstatic) after having shaved off a second of the previous world best time of 51.70 set by Evgeny Korotyshkin at the Russian Nationals in May.

Phelps's time of 50.65 seconds was the fastest in the world this year.

A man of few words, who tends to downplay his performance, the "Golden Boy" of the U.S. Swim circuit managed a few words for the press that signaled he was happy - a smidgent, at least - overall at long last.

"I'm fairly pleased with that," Phelps said.

"That's pretty good for right now. That's the best I've felt."

A bit cocky?

The win gave Phelps his 50th National title, the most all time.

Auburn's Tyler McGill confidently hit the wall behind him in second place with a so-so time of 52.20.

Ohio State's Tim Phillips came in a respectable third with a clock that read at 52.41.

With two races to go in the U.S. Championships in the month ahead, Phelps has turned a stellar page in his swim career on the American scene, for sure.

Without doubt, unpleasant personal missteps he struggled over last year (especially in respect to image) are fading into the past.

Just maybe, there's a product endorsement or two on the horizon, to propel his greatness forward once again.

News at 11.

Prince Harry...to compete at Polo Charity in NYC! Eligible bachelor turns heads...

Nacho & Prince Harry kibitzing on polo field!

Prince William's younger bro has his sights on returning to these shores at the end of June, according to Buckingham Palace.

The 25-year-old  - third in line to the Royal Throne - will participate in the much-awaited annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic slated for June 27 on Governor's Island in New York Harbor.

The boisterous freckled-face Prince will challenge Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras.

Fans of Nacho will be clammering to get up-close-and-personal with the studly athlete who graces splashy fashion spreads in his plum role as a Ralph Lauren model.

The high-profile event - sure to be the social soiree of the year - will benefit the illustrious American Friends of Sentebale which is the U.S. arm of the global charity co-founded by Harry.

The well-respected charity supports impoverished children of Lesotho in southern Africa.

Madonna, Kate Hudson and LL Cool J. were drawn to the classic last year like moths to a flame.

Just maybe, Lady Gaga will saunter into the chi chi partay and stir up the status quo a tad?

As long as the Pop Diva drags along her mad money purse, I expect none of the old guard will stride off in a huff.

I expect my invite is in the mail, eh?

See 'ya there!

A sporting event ripe for a spectacular hat!

President Barack Obama...reporter probes Barry "O" Bomber! Jump shot shakey...

With his feet planted firmly on the court at the White House, the President chatted with a reporter one-on-one seemingly without a care in the world.

The interviewer was keen on getting a glimpse of a Barack Obama that is rarely in plain view over the news airwaves.

When the reporter mentioned Barry "O" Bomber - Barack's nick-name in High School - it brought a smile to his face.

The President was bestowed with the awesome moniker because of his sizzling jump shot.

Barack Obama allegedly hung out with a posse of kids known as the "Rat-ballers" who were obsessed with basketball.

The President noted that when he enrolled in University he placed his focus on his studies - hence - his basketball skills fell by the wayside a tad.

"When I got back to the court, I'd lost my jump shot," he joked in so many words.

in recent days, Mr. Obama has endeavored to stay on top of his "game" (time permitting).

"He just had something about him. He had this charismatic nature," noted of the rat-ballers after looking-back.

In spite of the fact he dresses elegantly, and walks the corridors of power, old friends joke that he's just Barry to them.

"Barry is skinnier, though. He looks good," another pal chirped in.

The faded photograph above reveals "Barry" in his former incarnation.

The yearbook entry captures a chubby Obama shoulder-to-shoulder with his basketball team mates.

Barrack attended Punahou - the largest private school in the country in Honolulu - which caters to the high-and-mighty (cultural elite) of Hawaii.

The tuition was beyond Barack Obama's reach; but fortunately, the President landed a sholarship which afforded him the opportunity to pursue a quality education.

David Beckham...soccer injury sidelines soccer stud! Grim-faced & on the mend...

David Beckam has been spotted limping about the empty soccer field grim-faced on crutches.

Publicity shots captured by the ever-intrusive paparazzi have painted a dismal picture, too!

Becks is not a happy puppy!

Beckham underwent surgery recently in Finland on the heels of learning that he totally tore his achilles heel during a tumble on the field in a match against Chievo when he was on loan to AC Milan.

According to his physcian - Dr. Sakari Orava - the soccer star won't be able to run for at least four months.

In spite of the fact the foot won't take much strain over the next few weeks the prognosis is good.

Just betcha the ever-resilient Beckham will rise up from the ashes like a phoenix!

Many have whispered that Becks may be all washed up, but team mates at Galaxy - where his bread is amply buttered - have rallied in his corner.

"David remains an important player for the Galaxy and we look forward to welcoming him back and assisting in his recovery," stated General Manager Bruce Arena to a posse of curious reporters in recent days.

Barring some unsightly social disease, the sports icon should be able to rustle up endorsements for an underwear ad or two, while he is on the mend.

You go, stud!

David Letterman...Drew Brees Super Bowl champion guests tonight! Sports illustrated swimsuit edition...

Tonight, Drew Brees, appears as a guest on Dave Letterman fresh off of the gridiron from his glorious victory at the Super Bowl yesterday @ the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens (Florida)

The agile athlete - with movie star looks - will take a comfy seat next to Oscar-nominated Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) who will also be appearing on the heels of her Oscar nomination.

Although Brees will undoubtedly be the big attention-getter for the most part, a posse of hot-blooded studs will obviously channel surf over to CBS tonight to catch the unveiling of the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Hot nightime bill of fare, Dave!

I expect the ratings will go through the roof and the competition will be licking their wounds at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning..

Later!

Sandra Bullock in swim of things!

Barack Obama...Scott Brown challenges Prez to basketball match!

How about a flex competition?
(oil up those dudes!)

The health care issue has dragged on for too long.

Maybe it's time to settle the score with the Republicans the old-fashiioned way, eh?

Scott Brown has challenged the Preisdent to a two-on-two basketball game to 21 points.

According to the Senator - who just picked up the slack in Massachusetts - it may be a great ice-breaker.

That's the problem wth laying your cards down on the table, Barack;  the oppostion doesn't have a poker face to deal with.

Even still, the Commander-in-Chief may give the once studly (former Cosmopolitan nude lay-out model) a run for his money.

Although the Prez may come off a bit goofy on his bicycle when he hits the trails at the crack of dawn - in contrast - his moves are pretty smooth on the court.

Obama is pretty sly - which fathoms into determining how he landed in the White House - in spite of the fact the well-oiled machinery of the Clinton clan was breathing down his neck on the election trail.

"We'll be having our meeting on the court instead of  in the caucus room," Brown chuckled.

Senator Brown intends to pair up with his daugher (Ayla) and invites Barack to rustle up the female of his choice.

Barack better choose wisely, though;  after all, Brown's daughter is a scholarship player for Boston University.

Play ball!

Go get 'em Prez!

David Beckham...sexy underwear model returns to LA LA Land! Play Ball, dude...

Will Galaxy fans be treated to eye-candy this season?

A gang of blood-thirsty "Bulls" are chomping at the bit to best naughty soccer stud - David Beckham - when he saunters into the spotlight next week with a mischievous grin on his face.

What, me miss a game?

Team Captain, Landon Brandon, won't be coy with the truant soccer stud, however.

He's got a bone to pick with Becks, after all.

The slightly-peaked media Darling eeked out of seventeen (count 'em, dudes!) games this season with slippery ease.

To the powers-that-be in the head office, he was thumbing his nose at 'em, during the no-shows.

And, Beck's retort from across the big pond?

I'm nobody's houseboy, 'ya know!

The high-profile athelete wasn't going to let a nasty locker-room brawl cramp his style.

No, sir!

Actually, Donovas has been pi**ed because - in his words - he got no respect.

"He just mailed it in during the latter half of the 2008 MLS season".

While Donovan ranted and raved to the press non-stop, with little discretion, Beckam continued on his merry way.

The soccer whiz dazzled 'em on the field in jolly Old England, for starters.

And, pulled his weight with AC Milan.

As to the dog-fight on these shores - well - the gloves are on.

A knock-out punch may be in the offing if Donovan continues with the "bad mouthing" in the press.

In a book due out this week, an author noted that the star-player's alleged inability or unwillingness to fire up a team in a free-fall surprised cry-baby, Donovan.

Without any qualms Donovan allegedly lamented:

"It's disappointing, candidly, because you just want to see a heartbeat, a pulse."

Ouch!

Boys behaving badly, uh-huh!

Sports writers - players, too- are placing sizeable bets in the locker rooms.

Is the strong-willed spoiled sport inclined to tag along with Galaxy in spite of Donovan's abuse?

Or, exercise a buy-out option in his lucrative five-year contract to rejoin AC Milan?

Smart money is on Becks and the Euro trash, folks!

High-priced stud will call?

AFI Dallas...Mike Tyson! A champ & chump as seen through eyes of LSD-tripping Director James Tobak!

"Tyson" is an explosive - mostly insightful - foray into the personal and professional life of the boxer as seen through the drug-induced eyes of director James Tobak (Exposed & Pick-up Artist).

Electricity ziz-zagged lthrough the air like a bolt of lightning whenever the larger-than-life Champion step into the ring.

In time, frenzied fans ended up riveted to the edge of their seats uncertain of the fighter's fate; after all, in view of Tyson's unpredictable conduct in the past, who knew what might next in the ring.

Although there were a number of knock-outs (thirteen of them in the 1st round) - on occasion - fights were brought to an abrupt halt due to Tyson's uncontrollable rage which often pushed him beyond the limits.

At one juncture, Toback highlights a title rematch with Evander Holyfield - and when he does - the experience is gut-wrenching as shocked fans witness the infamous ear-biting incident which shamed the former golden boy of yesteryear.

"I was in a rage. So mad, that I just had to hurt him," Tyson recalled in one intense reveal on the silver screen.

The fast-paced documentary proceeds to follow the troubled athlete from his days as a hoodlum on the mean streets at age fourteen to the current day as he ponders a return to the ring.

Yup, Tyson once held the world in the palm of his celebrated fist, but it all slipped away.

The phone would ring at four o'clock in the morning.

When Toback plucked it up - at first - there was an eerie pause.

"James?"

"Yeah, Mike. I'm here."

Then, the two pals would ramble on in a conversation that spanned topics from death, to murder and suicide, fame and money, and the state of the fight game.

From this venting, Tobak stumbled on the idea to craft a documentary on the life and times of the once-celebrated kid from the wrong side of the tracks who rose to the height of his game with dizzying success.

"When I heard him wheeze on the other end of the phone one night, I suddenly realized that Tyson had asthma."

Then, the underlying theme for the documentary evolved.

"That's the reason he went for a knock-out in the 1st round. Mike was afraid he'd run out of breath and that he'd better down his opponent as quickly as possible."

"My approach was psycho-analytical," Tobak noted to the rapt audience at the Magnolia Theatre the other night, where the much-anticipated film was being screened under the auspices of AFI Dallas.

For ten hours a day, over a five-day period, he interviewed Mike.

The reflections - Tysons's musings, his angst, what-have-you - were offered up by way of split screen images and in a montage that cleverly maneuvered a probing reveal.

In addition, old news clips and flashbacks were artfully juxtaposed, to spark the bio and move it along at an entertaining pace.

Early on, Tyson admitted that he owed his success to a mentor, who pushed him on unrelentingly.

"He'd always be saying - "You look good, Mike" - or "You're in great physical shape", things like that."

At first, Mike surmised his manager might be gay.

"I realized one day that he was just building my confidence. Making me believe in myself."

After following the trainer's advice explicitly in the ring, it did not escape Tyson's attention, that he won all the bouts in the wake of the man's precise hard-hitting boxing tips.

When he passed to spirit suddenly one day, Tyson was devastated.

"My whole world fell apart," he recalled sadly.

Shortly thereafter, fast-talking promoter - "Don King" - breezed into the arena.

Tyson didn't have any kind words for the high-profile fight-man who took advantage of Mike in more ways than one.

"That serpentine piece of trash stole from me," he hissed into camera.

The Robin Gibbons fiasco was also fleshed out, too, in spite of the fact, the territory has been well-mined.

In one funny scene, Mike & Robin are caught in a sit-down interview with Barbara Walters.

As Gibbons poured her heart out about Tyson's rages - and terrible mood swings - the camera panned to Tyson who - not once - offered up a word in edgewise.

No, he sat meek as a lamb.

At one point, Walters is captured glancing at Tyson with a look that seems to say:

"Are you going to take this sitting down, Mike?"

"I knew they wanted me to get upset and fly into a rage. It was a set-up. I wasn't going to fall for it," he lamented.

On the subject of sex and relationships, Mike noted for the record:

"I like to wound my prey. Then, dominate."

In fact, Tyson - in some respects - is kind of kinky.

Tobak giggled that the buffed boxer once slept totally naked with just his prize belt on.

Tyson is potent filmmaking in many respects - but overall - falls flat.

In the final analysis, outdated filmic techniques hinderTobak's ability to impact the medium, or strike gold with his subject.

During a Q & A that was terribly cerebral - and self-indulgent - audience members were inclined to shut down.

In fact, before Tobak had the opportunity to field questions from fans, they'd all slipped out of the theatre to seek more entertaining climbs elsewhere on the Festival grounds.

Maybe those LSD trips - which he admitted bummed him out so many years ago - have had a more lasting impact than he'll ever know.

It was evident to film buffs present, though, that Tobak's lost that magic touch!

Brett Favre shocks fans & NFL. Retires from football...again!

When I flipped on ESPN for all-the-world it appeared there was an obituary underway!

Clips of a professional athlete's illustrious 18-year career on the gridiron, a run of impressive stats sure to make any young all-star football wanna-bee cream his jockstrap, and a few teary-eyed moments when pent-up emotions were inclined to slip to the surface unexpectedly and speak volumes about the man.

Of course, all the airwaves were awash with the news, too.

Brett Favre plucked up his cell bright and early this morning and informed the managers and owners of the Jets that he was quitting football - again!

The news media breathed a sigh of relief!

Maybe the mercurial Favre finally meant it?

"He's fooled us so many times," one reporter chortled.

But, many are tittering that this is surely the end to a brilliant stretch on the field, at long last.

Of course, there is the issue of Favre's age.

Off-season, a player needs time to recover from injuries.

With the older dudes, well, the process takes longer.

Has Favre been struggling to meet the challenge?

Maybe that's where performance-enhancing drugs come into play for a handful of desperate athletes?

"For an older football-player, it's tough," one commentator opined.

After all, football - sports enthusiasts lament - is a year-round game.

Yeah, the players may have a few weeks off, but they're back on the field shortly thereafter interacting with their team-mates, getting all-primed-up and ready to charge forward in the upcoming season.

"It's all about timing and chemistry. If the quarterback isn't going to show off-season for the practices, it's bad for the morale of the team."

Some speculated that coaches, managers, and team owners weren't going to afford major players such luxuries in the future.

As to Favre's retirement, does the pro stud mean it this time?

Insiders speculate that this is definitely the closing chapter of an exciting football career - fraught with highs and lows - but one that assures Favre a memorable place in the prestigious annals of Football History.

According to Wikipedia

Favre was the first player to win the AP MVP three times (1995–97) in NFL history, and led the Packers to seven division championships in 1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, and 2007, four NFC Championship Games in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2007, two NFC Championships (1996 and 1997) , and one Super Bowl Championship (XXXI).

He holds a number of NFL records including: most career touchdown passes (464), most career passing yards (65,127), most career pass completions (5,720), most career pass attempts (9,280), most career interceptions thrown (310), most consecutive starts among NFL quarterbacks (269; 291 total starts including playoffs), and most career victories as a starting quarterback (169).

The handsome jock wasn't any slouch on the field, that's for sure.

One sportscaster enthused:

"He played hard, won championships, and gave it his all."

What now for Favre?

Another comeback (didn't think I'd really flake out, did 'ya dudes?), endorsements - just maybe - sports-casting duties?

It's written in the wind that flew beneath his cleats!
