Barney's Beanery: no fags allowed! West Hollywood...

For years, Barney's Beanery (situated in the heart of West Hollywood & gay gulch) refused to take a sign down in the restaurant that said:

No Fags Allowed.

This past year management at the bastion of straight-dom finally complied with the Gay Community's request.

APPLAUSE!

In view of the foregoing, I thought it ironic that right across the street, City Officials erected a War Memorial.

Yes, the battle with Barney's Beanery, was won!

West Hollywood...queer traffic sign causes motorists to giggle!

When I drove down Flores this morning (the 1st street I rented an apartment on when I landed in town as a Hollywood hopeful) I did a double-take.

The traffic sign featured in the clip causes many people to giggle, I learned later.

There's something a bit sexual about it, don't 'ya think?

Pavilions...spanking new grocery swings open doors! Coupons! Free Merchandise! Spiffy WeHo outlet...

Pavilions fell down and went BOOM last spring!

Like moi, I expect you flipped open the mailbox the other morning - and spied the slick glossy flyer from Pavilions announcing that the West Hollywood outlet under construction at a snail's pace for the past twelve months or so - is about to thrust open its doors.

Whew!

Since spring blossomed into the lazy days of summer last year - sauntering beyond Robertson and Santa Monica Boulevard was tantamount to venturing into a vast chaotic abyss - rife with mutant strains of dust spewing ominous poisons on unsuspecting rush-hour commuters, rumbling dump trucks careening wildly down normally-quiet residential streets, and a cacophony of head-splitting jack-hammers piercing the ears daily.

Today?

The spanking new grocery with all the shiny bells and whistles beckons!

Apparently, the long-suffering wait was worth it.

No more late-night munchies or midnight-madness at Rock 'n Roll Ralph's on the glitzy Sunset Strip (@ Musicians alley).

Forget Gelsons!

The buffed studs strutting about may be ripe for the picking - but Gelsons' (formerly the Mayfair market) pricey high-calorie baked goods and snobby clientele with discerning turned-up reconstructed noses - are by way of the Dinosaur.

Meanwhile, at Whole Foods, I've tussled over a paper grocery bag with an off-beat self-indulgent cashier for the the last time, too.

Yup!

First trek down to Pavilions, I'll be cashing in my chips, you betcha!

With a few select coupons in hand, this savvy shopper will be snatching up a whole gold pineapple or two ($1.00 a tropical pop), one nutritious O Organics Salad (a 1-buck bargain with a coupon and ValuePlus card in tow), a crusty Artisan French Bread loaf (49 cents smart per offering), one thirst-quenching carafe of Safeway Apple Juice (FREE! with a coupon and ValuePlus Card), a jar of sticky-scrumptious Peanut Butter - sans poison strains of bacteria - darling (FREE! with a coupon and ValuePlus Card), and last - but not least - the old gut is grumbling for a Waterfront Bistro flash frozen seafood snack up to $8.99 in value (FREE! with a coupon and ValuePlus card).

Wake up and smell the java, dudes!

Oh, it slipped my mind, dear readers.

Safeway Select PrePack Coffee may be scooped up at a discount price ($2.00 off per coupon) until the offer expires September 4th (2009).

By the way, if you're on the prowl for a coffee mate, check out the produce stalls where a bevy of muscled studs have been sighted over the years flirting & flexing & fixating their way into bodacious hearts (among other things).

See 'ya there!

Starbucks...down on homeless! Nope, no compassion, just greed...

I was sipping a cup of piping-hot tea @ the Starbucks WeHo/24 Hour Fitness outlet when one of the barristas strolled over with a purpose and started to arrange four big leather easy-chairs in a "nook-like" setting.

I smiled.

"Cozy," I chuckled.

The pretty mid-twenties employee noted in a firm (but condescending tone of voice) that the Starbucks strategy was to psychologically "steer" guests who sauntered in the front door in the direction of the front counter & cashier so they wouldn't take a side route straight to the restroom.

I pointed out at this juncture that some patrons may have to relieve themselves.

So, of course, it was not only logical - but practical - that they may be inclined to head to the water closet first (limey term for head).

After all, what if they - as a Valley-girl might say:

"Like, really have-ta go".

A latte or specially-ordered cup of java takes a few seconds to conjure up - which means (perhaps tragically in some instances) that the poor soul have to cross their legs (and pray!) while they wait for the tasty beverage to appear at the take-out.

Then, after selecting a table and plunking down the Starbucks goodies, there would be a trot across the trendy cafe to the "John".

In that event, the beverage would have cooled off considerably by the time the patron was ready to stretch back and toss it back!

Of course, these youngsters aren't bright enough to figure that one out for themselves.

The neatly-attired personnel at Starbucks are trained to just Sell! Sell! Sell!

And now - exhibit their skills at giving a hefty heave-ho to the homeless - when they haplessly wander through the "unwelcome" door.

"They smell," she sniped - with what I thought for one sliver of a second was a pointed nod in my direction - as she moved on to carry out the rest of her perfunctory duties.

At this juncture, I surreptitiously sniffed my own "pits" (when no one was glancing in my direction) and did the old hand-cup gesture at my mouth (breathing out slowly) to verify my breath was not a dragon Meister, either.

In the final analysis?

No wonder the logo for the Seattle-based giant has become the symbol of greed!

Yogurt Stop...I pumped & he pumped! Whew...

Two gal pals threw open the doors of Yogurt Stop a few scant weeks ago and have already succeeded in rustling up a trendy dessert hot spot featuring delicious mouth-watering flavors and toppings. And, a clientele that positively sizzles at Sunset and on 'til dawn.

The secret?

Guests don't have to stand in a pesky line.

Nope.

Just grab a cup, pump your own from the spiggot, and then saunter over to a side counter where fresh fruit and fanciful sweet toppings invite the creative to decorate their own one-of-a-kind yogurt delight.

Catchy upbeat music and a lot of eye-candy (hot men! sexy bodacious babes) are sure to keep the Yogurt spot ringing up the busy cash register for years to come!

Dame Edna...LIVE! appearance during festive West Hollywood Gay Pride (2009)! June 9th thru 21st...

Well, if you're taking a trek into West Hollywood to catch Gay Pride (2009) - a bigger & better rainbow-studded hedonistic smorgasbord of sensual delights this year - why not snap up a ticket or two for Dame Edna's hilarious LIVE! Stage Show at the Ahmanson Theatre (June 9th thru 21st)?

The high-profile two-week fun-filled giggle is being billed as saucy Dame Edna's "First Last Tour".

That cheeky broad, taking a sly poke at Cher, perhaps?

For the totally clueless in middle-America Straight-ville, Dame Edna is a popular show gal who tours regularly - known particularly for her infamous naughty chit-chats with rapt audiences throughout her side-splitting LIVE! performances - on the glitzy entertainment circuit.

According to her bio, the Dame was born Edna May Beazley in the enchanting rural community of Wagga Wagga.

The high-kicker's stage career began humbly enough when she first sauntered into the glare of the spotlight on December 19th in 1955 - as Mrs. Norm Everage (just an average Australian housewife) - from Moonee Pondsa (Melbourne).

From the get-go, the bejewelled beauty has sworn up-and-down, that the lilac-coloured hair she is known for is au naturel.

Yup, she's an original starry-eyed blue-haired lady!

Ubiquitous diamond-studded cat-eye glasses are also a signature trademark.

The Divine Ms. Edna traverses the globe - kibitzing non-stop with crusty old world leaders from one corner of the Earth to another - as she jet-sets between her luxury residences in London, Sydney, Switzerland, LA LA land, and the oh-so upper crust Martha's Vineyard.

Allegedly, Dame Edna is a friend and confidante of the Queen!

Elizabeth, silly!

Can a juicy (insightful) tell-all be far behind?

Barack Obama...gay rumors "post" getting hits again! Where there's smoke, there's fire?

Well, for some inexplicable reason, the post I penned a few months ago on the rumors about Barack Obama being "gay", has been garnering a lot of interest again at my blog site over the past few days!

Yup, the hits keep coming.

Maybe it's those long walks of Barack's that have caused the tongues to wag.

After all, when a dude goes for a stroll in West Hollywood, it usually means he's on the prowl and looking to hook up and get his rocks off.

Maybe the Prez has his eye on some stud in the Secret Service?
Maybe Michelle should tag along!

Proposition 8...protest & rally on May 26th! Sheriff crowd control...

There was a large show of force by the Sheriff's Department at the Proposition 8 protest rally on May 26th!

The well-behaved marchers kept their cool, though, and the rally - which attracted thousands - ended on a positive note without incident.

Good Samaritan...with ulterior motives!

Drats!

Yesterday morning I hopped into my vehicle and there wasn't enough juice in the battery to turn the engine over.

Upon closer inspection, I was able to determine I left my parking lights on.

Duh!

I lifted the hood, nonetheless, and thought I would double-check the wiring to make sure the connections weren't loose.

As I was doing my butch handy-work, a white male cruised up - at which point - I relayed my dilemma.

"Do you have cables," he softly asked.

When I nodded in the affirmative, he paused a beat, then half-whispered through the open window:

"Would you like to get su**ed?"

Well, that wasn't exactly the kind of jump start I was looking for!

Troubadour...nightclub where Elton John, James Taylor & The Doors got their big breaks! WeHo...

The celebrated Troubadour first opened its doors way back in 1957 when West Hollywood was still a wild unincorporated town!

The legendary Doors allegedly signed their 1st record deal after a record exec caught their act LIVE! and in the raw.

Sir Elton John, Tom Waits, and James Taylor appeared on a regular basis in the halcyon days of their illustrious musical careers, too.

Today, a gig at Doug Weston's Troubadour is still a status booster, no matter how 'ya cut it.

711...hiring scary people in need of therapy!

Bring back the stylish dame!

Occasionally, I pop into a 711 at the corner of Holloway & La Cienega to pick up the morning paper and snatch up a cup of Java.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks, management there has hired a female (?) cashier with an obvious personality disorder.

Strolling in to shop there now is quite an uncomfortable experience.

Of course, one has only to take a gander at the screwball character, to fathom what her problem is!

The poor little misfit is overweight, for starters.

Worse than that, she has no fashion sense or even a smidgen of self-awareness.

After botching a dye job, for some inexplicable reason, the twenty-something (I'm being kind) non-entity chose to sculpt the mish-mash of yucky orange-yellow-green freakish strands into a little pyramid on top.

Does she honestly take a glance in the mirror each morning and imagine that she looks the least bit cool or attractive?

Today, she appeared to have a fixation on me.

When I strode towards the coffee counter, she stopped in her tracks, blocked my path, and stared at me.

Nope, she wouldn't get out of the way.

So creepy, it made my skin crawl!

When I side-stepped her to let her pass, she copied my action to a "t", and remained standing "this-close" to the left of me.

Kookoo, eh?

Her weirdness walked off to another section of the store, but within secs, was back at my side paying attention to every minute detail as I added cream, stirred the piping-hot liquid into a tasty blend, then crowned the disposable cup with a lid.

She followed in unison as I trekked over to the cash register - albeit in line behind the display case - then stood there at the check-out looking for-all-the-world like an empty-headed zombie.

Now, I understand why well-known celebrities go up-the-wall when they experience the same kind of bizarre conduct from strangers running rampant all around 'em in the streets, when they're dining at a trendy restaurant, or out on a shopping spree on Robertson.

These weirdos need to get a life!

I wanted to advise the woman, who had all the personality and charm of a worm, that her behaviour was odd.

"Maybe you should get some therapy," I imagined myself saying in a straight-forward heart-to-heart.

But, my spiritual teachings urge compassion.

So, I smiled politely, said a little prayer for her, and exited politely.

Needless to say, I won't be patronizing that convenience store again.

If she is mentally imbalanced, I certainly don't want to encourage her.

Henry Miller said it best:

"There is no salvation in becoming adapted to a world (or person?) which is crazy."

Medical Marijuana...DEA should focus on Doctors not pot dispensaries!

In the spite of the fact the California Supreme Court issued a ruling that Proposition 215 (a voter-approved "compassionate use of Medical Marijuana" measure) stand, the DEA continued with para-military-style raids on local pot dispensaries.

The overzealous agents argued that marijuana was an illegal substance according to Federal law and that - consequently - the DEA could not look the other way.

In sum, the passing of Prop 215 in California, placed Federal and State Laws at odds with each other.

Notwithstanding, there was an outcry from Californians who felt that the "will of the people" was being ignored by self-serving law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, others lamented to all within earshot, that Barack Obama was not fulfilling his campaign promise regarding the issues.

So, Americans for Safe Access - a non-profit organization that has been fighting the medical marijuana dilemma in the State Courts (and winning hands-down) - organized a highly-vocal protest which was launched on the White House.

Shortly after Barack Obama and his administrators were bombarded with a barrage of telephone calls and angry e-mails - Eric Holder (Attorney General) - issued a terse statement to the press in which he noted that DEA raids on pot dispensaries (legally licensed in the State of California) were no longer condoned by the U.S. Government.

I penned a post on the turn of events.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/03/medical-marijuanapara-military-style_02.html

A cheer went up around the state!

On the heels of that public announcement, inside sources alleged that a confidential memo was sent out to prosecutors advising them to "drop" charges against pot dispensaries and medical marijuana patients who were caught in the middle of the turf wars going down between the Federal Government and the State of California.

Suddenly, without warning, the bold action by the U.S. Attorney's office earlier in the week was reversed two days later amid a shroud of mystery.

Consequently, the whole prosecutorial issue regarding the matter was left twisting in the wind.

Some theorize that staff in the Obama inner circle advised the President that he may have jumped the gun in view of the fact the administration had not lined up all their ducks in a row, yet.

White House spokesperson , Nick Shapiro, may have hit the nail on the head when he recently confided to the press.

"The President believes that federal resources should not be used to circumvent state laws, and as he continues to appoint senior leadership to fill out the ranks of the federal government, he expects them to review their policies with that in mind."

Curiously, a Professor of Law & Medicine focused on an issue that has been foremost in my own mind in recent days.

Alex Capron (USC) speculated that the debate about medical marijuana centers on whether it is something that is part of the doctor-patient relationship or something where the authorities have an obligation to protect the community from a dangerous drug.

I hate to be a stick in the mud, but I started to reflect on that aspect of the problem recently, after a stroll or two in the neighborhood in recent weeks.

On several occasions when I have passed by a couple of the pot dispensaries in West Hollywood (two on Santa Monica Boulevard in WeHo proper) I have spied cars careen to a halt outside the guarded front door - at which point - three or four young adults stumbled out into the busy street and headed into the facility to pick up their "medicine".

I know that I shouldn't prejudge - and that just glancing at a person's physical body is not a surefire way to verify if they have a medical problem that requires the potent powers of the leafy substance - but for the most part it appeared on each occasion I witnessed said events that the "patients" were energetic youths whose only need appeared to be to devour the drug.

Initially, if you recall, the whole idea of the compassionate use of medical marijuana sprang forth as an alternative to off-the-shelf prescription drugs when it was determined that A.I.D.S. patients in advanced stages of the disease benefited from the medicinal qualities of the banned substance.

Understandably, in view of the foregoing, I am concerned that because of a selfish few (who may be abusing the privilege to just get "high") medical marijuana and the distribution of the "medicine" at government-licensed dispensaries may be placed in jeopardy.

And, that would be a shame, since hard-working staff at Americans for Safe Access - in particular the lawyers - fought monumental battles in the courts on behalf of the worthy cause to ensure medical marijuana was available to needy patients.

Others, like myself, have not only written posts to rally support for the compassionate use of medical marijuana, but also attended protests in front of DEA Headquarters to demand an end to the para-military-style raids, drug and money seizures, and dehumanizing arrest procedures.

In the final analysis, it appears that the problems may have arisen because of unethical doctors who may be approving medical marijuana prescriptions willy-nilly to appease their patients (or for quick cash under the table).

Personally, I believe that at this juncture of the "game", the government (and the DEA) should focus their attention on the doctors.

If an investigation determines there has been wrongdoing by individuals in the medical profession, then perhaps the State needs an oversight Board to properly review requests for medical marijuana prescriptions before rubber-stamping approval.

Sorry, Dudes!

San Diego...Fat Tuesday & Mardi Gras Street Party! Feb. 24th...

A few years ago, West Hollywood used to toss a festive Mardi Gras celebration in the alley next to the post office off San Vicente Boulevard.

Usually, sensual riffs wafted through the starry night, as bejewelled party-goers sipped on exotic cocktails, nibbled on Cajun cuisine, and jockeyed for beads tossed from the upper levels of balconies and back stoops.

But, the celebration fizzled away into oblivion, and the locals are now left to fend for themselves in nightclubs & house parties 'round town.

On Tuesday, February 24th - if you're inclined to hop on AMTRAK or take a quick jaunt down the highway to San Diego, you'll be able to catch the New Orleans spirit at the Hillcrest Community Mardi Gras Street Party!

According to organizers, it's going to be a scintillating night of glitz, glamour, and gluttony!

There will be a bevy of magical street performers, tons of food, and enough shiny-colored beads to satiate any glittering bauble Queen.

Entertainment

Swinging jazz & blues vocals by Candye Kayne.
Drag extraordaire by Tootie & the Lip Girls.
Acrobatic thrils by Il Circo.

All Proceeds go to community improvement through the Hillcrest Association & GSBDA Foundation.

So, kick up your heels, eh?

West Hollywood...African-American Postal Clerk's dumb quote of the day!

Anti-American protest in Iraq

As I plucked up my stamps at the post office on San Vicente in the heart of WeHo, I made an off-handed remark to the Afro-American clerk that I am Canadian.

I noted it was a plus - because in the eyes of most Nations - Canucks are considered pretty neutral in the scheme of things.

"They generally don't have to worry about being held hostage, or kidnapped, like Americans do," I said off-the-cuff.

She stood back and glared at me.

"You think Americans get held hostage or kidnapped?"

Whoa nellie.!

What rock has she been snoozing under?

I diplomatically pointed out that due to the situation in Iraq and Iran - and elsewhere in the Middle East - there was some animosity towards Americans. After all, many view the presence of troops in Iraq, as an Imperialist occupation.

My jaw literally dropped when she hit me with this zinger.

"What? They love Americans in Iraq," she insisted with the utmost sincerity.

Oh boy!

I wished her a nice day as I turned on my heel and dashed out the door.

Then, the doddering old fool dozed back to sleep at the counter.

Some folks don't have a clue.

Or is it just denial?

Einstein said it best:

"Two things are infinite: the universe & human stupidity; I'm not sure about the universe."
