Original Pantry...former Mayor Riordan ups java stakes! 50 cents a cup, please!

For many residents in downtown Los Angeles the coffee shop to trek off to for a hearty breakfast at the crack-of-dawn is the Original Pantry at 9th and Figueroa Streets.

Until July 1st of this year, a free cup of java has also been a time-honored tradition since the original owner (Dewey Logan) first swung open the doors of the eight-four seat eatery in 1924.

But, escalating costs (coffee has risen more than 40% over the past few decades) forced former Mayor Riordan (the current proprietor) to hike the price of a cup of Joe to 50 cents during the bustling breakfast rush (between 4 a.m. and 11 a.m).

Throughout the day, though, a regular cup will put a dent in a customer's wallet to the tune of $1.95.

Gosh, that's as bad as Denny's, eh?

In spite of the surprise boost in price in recent weeks, the regulars at the Pantry haven't been complaining.

"Am I outraged?" one patron pointedly quizzed a roving reporter from the local daily.

"No. For years this has been an awesome place. If they need the extra 50 cents to help keep the doors open, that's OK with me," he beamed.

Riordan noted there were two advantages to the hike once the nominal charge was instituted.

"We didn't have to charge more for breakfast, and we no longer automatically pour coffee for everyone in the morning."

And, their tasty brew still sells below the cost of a Seniors Coffee at McDonalds.

The brass at the giant fast-food take-out must be pulling their hair out!

I was first introduced to the Original Pantry years ago when my Theatrical Agent treated me for breakfast there one fine morning.

Talk about a tasty mouth-watering breakfast with all the trimmings!

The cast of intriguing characters - who saunter in daily are a sight for the eyes - too!

See 'ya there!

Westin Hotel...worst Casino and lodging in Las Vegas! Staff harass tourists! Joyless vacation spot!

Tourists who strolled through the Westin Casino (at Flamingo Road in Las Vegas) on Thursday afternoon to snap up a cup of java at Starbucks just off-the-lobby were quite distressed when they found themselves "victims" of a stalker in the employ of the one-star Hotel.

After zipping into the mensroom for a quick whiz on their way to the cafe, they encountered a floor manager standing in an intimidating manner giving them the once-over for no good reason, when they stepped into the empty lobby.

When they turned the corner to head in the direction of Starbucks, the employee with an alarming demeanor (in a puke-colored suit) proceeded to follow them across the lobby.

At one point, the out-of-towners were inclined to plunk themselves down and play a round-or-two of slots, but they were so put-off by the bizarre conduct of the individual in question, that they downed their drinks quickly and sped out the door to another Casino down the street.

Uh-huh!

Although the Westin was begging for customers, they still managed to let a whale or two out-the-door, go figure!

Great way to run a business concern, eh?

Subsequently, I am bestowing the Westin with the dubious title of "Worst Hotel" in Las Vegas!

Starbucks...Seattle outlets flogging booze! Burger King Fast-food cocktails to go!

The reining java King has sauntered into the alcoholic beverage market!

According to recent news reports, four of Starbucks trendy cafes in Seattle are  now serving up beer and wine to take the edge off the day.

Of course - there will always be an ample supply of tongue-twisting coffee specials to jump-start the day at the crack-of-dawn - too (as usual).

Word out of Florida is that two Sonic restaurants have followed the lead of Burger King after the fast-food giant introduced "Whopper Bars" in Miami, Las Vegas, and Kansas City.

Flogging thirst-quenching ales and soothing sips of cool quality wines may boost sales, but as far as the critics are concerned, the combination of fast-food and mood-elevating beverages at the drive-thru may lead to a slippery road to hell.

I worry more about my pocketbook.

Beers are being sold at Starbucks for $5.00 a bottle while wine soars in price at a pricey $9.00 a glass.

Personally, I'd rather pick up a six-pack at the local grocery and save a fortune (and my life) in the process on the way home where I'm about to become a couch potato for the night!

Amen!

Starbucks...at war with McDonalds over menu items! Oatmeal never looked so tasty!

Those with a keen eye probably noticed that two giants in the fast-food industry have been competing neck-in-neck for the almighty dollar in recent days.

The tactics each corporate entity has been engaged in to lure customers includes copy-catting menu items, for starters.

For example, when Starbucks sales started to slump, the trendy coffee-house introduced a "breakfast" sandwhich startling similar to the Egg McMuffin that McDonalds rolls out at the crack-of-dawn each day.

Seattle's "egg & sausage" upstart is tastier, though (because the ingredients are fresher and higher-quality).

But, breakie-lovers at Starbucks pay through the nose for the treat.

Meanwhile, over in Kroc territory, execs started scheming to find a successful way to snag a hefty share of the lucrative specialty java market.

Bingo!

Back at the "breast", McCafe brands started to fly across the counter faster than the pimply-faced overweight servers could rustle 'em up!

Ever-mindful of their client base (and likewise their penny-pinching habits) the brass wisely priced their java beverages a buck-or-so less than those on tap at Starbucks.

Then, shortly after Starbucks started to rake in the cash on "Oatmeal" sales (a nourishing breakfast meal offered up in a snazzy cup with a juggernaut of zesty nuts, chewy raisins, and delicious brown sugar on top) the Quaker dude's product mysteriously showed up on the shelves at McDonalds out-of-the-blue one day.

Imagine that!

Unfortunately - in contrast - the cereal that McDonalds serves up to its customers is usually stone cold and brimming with tasteless apple chips, rubbery raisins, and icky sweetener.

Eugh!

Starbucks is not offering any French Fries on the menu - well - not yet.

But, just betcha, a home-cooked style potato side-dish (like Grandma used to whip up in her kitchen at sunrise) would sell well alongside the breakfast sandwich.

Can't wait!

Mayor Gavin Newsom...pops into Starbucks! Nearly runs me over!

Mayor has roving eye!

This morning I almost ran smack dab into Mayor Newsom on my way to Safeway to shop.

Actually, his handlers nearly ran into me, literally.

As I crossed the pavement to the entrance of the grocery, a SUV cruised up - made a turn a few inches across my path - and pulled to an abrupt halt.

The door swung open - at which point - I caught sight of Mayor Newsom as he gingerly stepped outside of the vehicle with his nose in a raft of paperwork.

Burning the midnight oil, Gavin?

I give him Kudos for popping into the cafe to snap up his own morning cup of Java.

Or, was he intending to glad-hand potential voters along the way?

I suppose I should have lingered about  to determine what kind of caffeine beverage kick starts his Honor at the crack of dawn.

Actually, it was about 8:40 a.m., so he must be a late riser!

I slurped down my first cup of coffee at 6 a.m., after all.

The political candidate's casual attire - dress slacks and plain white shirt (sans jacket) - tipped me off about one thing.

The Mayor with the roving eye stays fit and trim.

Uh--Huh!

Gotta look - suave, sophisticated, and healthy - for those cameras capturing the candidate's every move  around the city, eh?

Starbucks...drops "tall" java from menu! Muzak's gotta go, too!

Starbucks insists that they dropped the "tall" size from their drive-thru menu because there was too much clutter.

In their heads, perhaps!

Frankly, my dears, it's all a gimmick to rustle up sales, if 'ya ask me!

The 16 oz Grande &  20 oz Venti are still in plain view.

Maybe the folks at headquarters in Seattle just figure that motorists need to slurp down larger quantities of java to get through the din of traffic each day?

Personally, I only order "tall", because being wired is not my cup of tea.

In fact, I usually order up a misto - with extra foam (I like moustaches that taste good, after all) - to soften the caffeinee blow a smidgen.

But, when you get right down to it, "tall" is actually "small" when you stand in next to the other two big sellers.

Or, so I thought, until today.

Did you know that Starbucks actually sells an 8 oz. cup of brew?

I wonder what they call it.

Mini-java, anyone?

Must be a state secret, or something, 'cause I don't believe I've ever caught hide-nor-tail of it 'til it got a splashy mention in the newspaper at the crack of dawn.

Ah, and that's the crux of it, really.

Publicity!

Starbucks is really crafty when it comes to revving up interest in product and sales.

Just pull a switcheroo to dredge up talk at the water cooler, now and then, eh?

On the heels of the java-talk, the leading coffee King also announced an expansion of at least 250 outlets.

Obviously, at Starbucks, the almighty bean is still King.

Now, if they would only tinker with that wimpy musak that filters through as background "noise" ad nauseam.

Is that some kind-of-wail of the Pacific Northwest kind?

Starbucks...stuck-up bit**es don't help business! Paradise road barista bad news...

Well, when the news hit the fan this past week, cheers went up around the country.

No more contracts with AT & T, or need to secure a Wi-Fi provider, when slipping into Starbucks for a hot java and toasted bagel at the crack of dawn.

Uh-huh!

The head honchos at the Seattle-based "mover-and-shaker" in the coffee bean marketplace confirmed that - henceforth - Wi-Fi service would be provided "gratis".

Tongues wagged that Starbucks felt threatened - not only by McDonalds recent introduction of Starbuck's-style java delights to their McCafe menu - but their decision to provide free Internet access too (which prompted the change of policy).

In spite of their desperate bid to prevent their market share from shrinking, suits at Starbucks - as usual - failed to conduct a thorough assessment of the situation.

For example, what good is the lure of free Wi-Fi, if Baristas are rude and insulting to the customers?

Yup!

Service with a smile at Starbucks has gone by way of the dinosaur.

From my perch, it appears that the low-paid workers - who hold jobs that were once (but no longer) envied - are not unlike green-eyed monsters with their noses up against the candy-store window.

The goodies are within reach, but they can't get their grubby hands on 'em.

Without doubt, some of these low-lifes - with all the personality of a worm - are jealous of the upwardly mobile customers who patronize their establishment.

On occasion - because of it - they seize on opportunities to insult the clients.

For instance, at the Paradise & Flamingo Starbucks outlet in Las Vegas, one huffy Barista (with bad skin, an attitude to match, and about to turn 21 she boasts) is continually off-putting with her holier-than-thou attitude.

She treats patrons like they should be flattered by her presence!

One regular was in the midst of a small meditation - as he waited for the laptop to fire up - when the snarky gal strode by and barked out a command.

"No sleeping here!"

Huh?

The startled guest responded by noting that they were meditating for a moment (to get centered).

Without skipping-a-beat, she rudely shot back an insulting remark.

"Looked like sleeping to me," she spat at the guest in an acid tongue.

Honey, you don't know your a** from a hole in the ground to begin with!

Cold frigid bitches are a dime-a-dozen, by the way, so wise-up.

If you can't be polite and provide service in a prompt professional courteous manner, it's obviously time to move on to sweeing streets or cleaning out toilets.

From where I sit, it appears that even that lowly task may be beyond your capability.

Starbucks executives - wake up - and smell the coffee.

Rude, insulting, classless employees are running your business into the ground.

Free Wi-Fi and McMuffin-style breakfast snacks won't save you.

Starbucks...free Wi-Fi for all! Breathing down McDonalds neck...

A roar of approval was voiced across the land this week when Starbucks headquarters announced that all Wi-Fi service will now be "gratis" at the upscale cafe outlets around the country.

Undoubtedly, the switch in policy was - in part - due to the fact that in recent days McDonalds has been stealing some of Starbucks' thunder on the competitive java terrain.

Last year, McDee's introduced their McCafe line of specialty coffees at lower cost, for instance.

Then, earlier this year, the No. 1 fast-food take-out-joint introduced free Wi-Fi to their down-to-earth customers who appeared to care more about - burgers, fries, and big gulps - than they do about free access to the Internet.

Indeed, on the past few occasions that I have patronized McDonalds in California and Nevada, I haven't spied many taking advantage of the twin arches generous WiFi offer.

One problem?

In spite of the fact McDee's  has rovided the free Wi-Fi service nationwide, they have yet to install enough "electrical outlets" to lure in more upscale patrons along the lines of those who frequent Starbucks.

Uh-huh!

The McDee's I am sitting in right now in the Mojave Desert only has one wall plug to facilitate powering up when the battery is low.

Stingy bast**ds!

No matter.

McDonalds is a far cry from the ambience that Starbucks offers anyhoo!

For good reason.

How many savvy internet users could tolerate the endless stream of McDee's counter persons screaming out at the top of their lungs ad nauseam.

"Order 32! Sausage Biscuit with Cheese! Senior Coffee!"

Even still, I applaud the fast-food-chain for forcing Starbucks' hand.

As to whether there will be any available seats in Starbucks henceforth - in view of the welcome turn-of-events - that's an entirely different matter altogether to ponder.

Queens...they shoot horses, don't they?

As I sipped my morning java, and checked e-mail at Pavillions at the crack of dawn, the idle chit-chat of a couple of tacky old Queens perched behind me pierced the air.

OMG, Mary!

If you ever catch siight of  me in a coffee clatch gossiping alongside a gaggle of tired old drags like that - shoot me - please!

I'd rather die a quick death than a slow long-drawn out tacky one like that!

A bagel...is a bagel is a bagel. To paraphrase Gertrude Stein...

Spike it with a bit of Philadelphia cream cheese!

Today, I strolled into Starbucks for a hot cup of Earl Grey tea and a toasted bagel, when I noticed something curious.

There was no ubiquitous opening in the center of the fresh breakfast snack.

During the baking process, I expect that the dough got a little too swollen - and thus - sealed the center up tight.

That caused me to wonder.

Is a bagel still a bagel if it has no hole?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Pavillions...security guards harass shoppers! Management looks other way...

Goofy irresponsible Management spoils shopping experience!
(WeHo)

Thursday night customers at Pavillions in WeHo were a tad miffed when a security guard strode up to the cozy Starbucks cafe and instructed the handful of regulars sipping on tasty beverages and engaging in a bit of upbeat chatter that the section was being shut-down.

Huh?

The hands on the plain modern clock on the wall confirmed that it was just shy of  9 p.m. on a Thursday night in the heart of gay gulch.

Right off-the-bat, a couple of die-hard social butterflies hauled a couple of straight-back chairs to the other side of the partition, plunked themselves down, and carried on in spite of the nasty impolite intrusion.

"Heh," yelled out the surly African-American guard, "put those chairs back."

One elderly gent piped up in a knee-jerk sort-of reaction.

"We'll just wait here until the cleaning crew finish up," he huffed at the Pavillions staffer.

At this point, the big lug was quick on the uptake, too.

"I'm shutting this section down for the night," he snarled back.

A disgruntled local resident asked to speak to the manager.

"I don't need to get a manager, 'cause I know who I am," he hollered back as he glared down his nose and snickered under his breath.

Huh?

What does "knowing who you are" have to do with a request to rustle up the store manager?

Something was amiss!

This a**hole's attitude, for starters.

I wasn't surprised by what went down, though.

In the past few weeks I reported on a handful of African-American security guards abusing their authority at the same Pavillions.

For instance, I witnessed a couple of racist guards follow white folks around the store - and on a few occasions - harass and intimidate them without provocation.

Although loyal customers have complained about these individuals, management has not taken any action - in fact, in some cases - hasn't even bothered to respond (in spite of the fact pamphlets at the cashier encourage consumers to lodge their opinions on service and quality with the understanding their voice(s) will be heard).

It's all for show, eh?

Shortly after my post was published on the Internet, and the security guards recognized me later when I was shopping in the store, they began to whisper amongst themselves (and point me out to fellow employees).

Now, they give me the old hairy eye-ball everytime I saunter into the store.

'Ya know, I've been shopping at this location for twenty years, and I don't intend to let a gang of thugs intimidate me or try to discourage me from shopping there if I so choose.

When you consider these bullies are outsiders who come into the neighborhood daily to work - then shuffle off at the end of the shift to some hellhole in another part of town - it's downright annoying.

An ill-mannered uneducated ruffian with no class - though attired in a well-pressed dark monkey suit provided by the security company - is still a low-life ruffian (no matter how you cut it).

I generally just breeze in, purchase a handful of items, then pay at the automated cashier.

Subsequently, I have as little contact as possible with these unsophisticated losers.

A scripture says it succinctly:

Never throw pearls before swine.

Amen!

Starbucks...immature staff insult customers! Screwed priorities off-putting...

Times must be tough!

One upon a time, if you waltzed into Starbucks for a piping hot cup of java, you'd be treated to a smile and professional service.

Today, a customer should count themselves lucky if they don't get insulted, particularly if they zip into the Starbucks location in WeHo (across from 24-Hour fitness).

For starters, the barristas there go to great lengths to find novel ways to keep homeless people away (and out of) the comfortable environs of their precious little cafe in gay gulch.

In fact, I was so shocked at the way they mistreated the less fortunate, that I penned a post on the issue a few months ago along with a consumer alert.

Post:  06/09

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/06/starbucksdown-on-homeless-nope-no.html

Obviously,  management at Starbucks must have missed the searing critique, because not much as changed.

In fact, now the immature barristas at the leading (but slipping quickly) java outlet appear to have their sights on customers who pop into the outlet for a quick pick-me-up and pastry, too.

The staffers I am referring to are like a bunch of wide-eyed kids with their noses up against the window of the candy store anxious to get their grubby hands on the goodies in the window.

But, the spoils are just beyond their reach.

Tough ti**y!

So, they vent their anger on the privileged, to retaliate.

One gentleman - who drives a $300,000.00 Rolls Royce and is married to a well-known celebrity - is fodder for a bevy of cruel jokes they hurl his way (he, none the wiser).

The little green-eyed monsters tend to mistreat regulars, as well, simply because they are jealous of the objects of their disdain who drive up in fancy sportscars and the lastest fashion trends.

I witnessed one pathetic Asian employee (the short plump one, not the affected Queen) walk away from the cashier when he spied a customer strolling in his direction to the counter.

The snub was obvious; in fact, another employee was forced to step in awkwardly and try to smooth over the troubled waters.

What prompted this rude inappropriate conduct?

Pride, no doubt.

The dizzy barrista thinks he's too good to wait on some folks.

If that's the case, bozzo, take a hike!

Oh yes, the employees here are excited to pick up their paychecks each week, but when it comes to actually working for the cold-hard cash (i.e., waiting on people)  - if they had their druthers - they'd let 'em eat cake.

One nutso staffer who works on the counter (well, sort of!) tends to plop herself down alongside a customer or two unannounced during the course of her shift on a regular basis, in a bold-faced effort (I expect) to fool herself into thinking she's not actually toiling away for a couple of bucks an hour.

Ouch!

Consequently, patrons are forced to wait patiently until the little Princess gets off her fat a** and shifts her slovenly bod into higher gear.

Even still, she's a dreary mess!

A lot of these kids stream into town from the boondocks somewhere seeking their fortune & fame.

Unfortunately, they are a bunch of losers with no talent; consequently, the Hollywood dream never pans out.

So, they take it out on the customers, who they envy!

Bottom line, Starbucks employees in WeHo will shun customers who expound views they disagree with, wear the wrong gym shorts, support social or political causes they don't  hanker to, you name it..

Golly, I thought that when an individual worked for a company like Starbucks, they were reqiuired to leave all their personal "baggage" at the door and treat each customer equally (not discriminate unjustly at whim).

So, I called management at Starbucks, to verify their policy.

Right off-the-bat, a customer service rep assured me that they did not support the kind of inappropriate conduct I enlightened her about.

"All customers should be treated equally. You're right."

At this juncture, the pleasant spokesperson asssured me the District Manager would be having a few words with the  employees in question with the specific aim of getting their priorities straight.

Turns out - that being a squealer - can be profitable!

She promised to mail me a couple of free coupons for beverages on the house!

I trust that she'll also remember to inform those spoiled brats that customers never tip lazy barristas who "give attitude".

After all, no one in their right mind should reward insulting behaviour, eh?

Starbucks...immature barista chats about pooh & gossips that male java-drinkers pi** on toilet seat!

Prissy Miss @ Starbucks prefers Vatican flush treatments!

I swung the door wide-open and breezed into the aesthetically-pleasing Starbucks Cafe in WeHo (across from 24-hour fitness) when I immediately caught site of a Barista gossipping with a male patron.

Casually, I strolled up to the counter a dozen or so steps away, where I waited patiently for the dizzy broad to wrap up her acid-tongued put-downs targeted at clueless customers in her midst.

Just as the scatter-brained twenty-something gal approached me - she half-turned - and spied a male patron exit the women's restroom.

At this juncture, she uttered-up an unflattering quip about ignorant fellas inclined to take a whiz in the restroom reserved for "Women", as evidenced by a ubiquitous plaque on the door.

I was taken aback.

Over the years - it has been acceptable practice for guys who frequented the "gay-dominated" Starbucks - to relieve themselves in the one provided for those of the female persuasion in the event the "John" for the Dudes was occupied.

To add a bit of levity to the awkward moment, I laughingly asked her (and a male employee who had just sidled up next to her behind the counter) if she ever noticed that the water closet (no pun intended) for the ladies smelled a lot nicer.

I noted that one employee surmised it was due to the fact that perfumed women drifted in-and-out of the cramped space throughout the day - the end result being - that a waft or two of the expensive scents lingered on for a brief spat after the skirts long departed.

Without batting-an-eye or skipping a beat, she retorted:

"No, it's because we (females?) don't pee on the toilet or the tiles like men do."

Before I could offer up a defense, she rattled on with her distasteful diatribe.

"And, we don't pooh in public, either."

I was aghast!

Was she insinuating that customers actually took a squat outside of Starbucks and let fly with a turd or two on the busy traffic-filled WeHo streets just a hop-and-a-skip away?

"Who's been poohing in public," I quizzed.

Her retort was quick.

"One day I witnessed a guy go into the men's room with a newspaper in his hand and he didn't come out 'til about twenty minutes later," she huffed.

Before I could respond, she continued with her anal chat.

"We don't pooh in public."

Now, it suddenly dawned on me why she was getting her sanitary napkin in a flap.

When potty-mouth spat out the phrase - "poohing in public" - she was obviously inferring that women who flounce into a restroom at a Cafe or restaurant avoid plunking their precious tushes down on the toilet seat to take a dump.

Do they wait until they've crossed the thresh hold at home, before letting-her-rip on the throne?

If that's the case, why doesn't Starbucks just yank out the bowls in the shi**er, to economize?

Before the annoying Barista opened her yap again, I exited with a grin, then quickly sauntered over to the side counter for a bit of cream for my piping-hot tea.

Drats!

The pitcher was empty.

It suddenly dawned on me that if this bitch-on-wheels wasn't so hell-bent on kibitzing shamelessly with customers and intent on getting down on her knees to sniff the edge of the toilet seat for splashes of pee (with the ultimate aim of pointing an accusing finger at a suspect male patron) that she might (OMG) be capable of waiting on a customer promptly - in addition to - properly stocking the sidebars without difficulty or delay.

But - that would require a modicum of common sense, intelligence and professionalism - sadly lacking in this poor excuse for a sentient being.

Obviously, too much Starbucks java rots the brain!

Parenthood...quote!

I was sipping on a hot cup of java bright and early this morning in Starbucks when a young father strode in with his tot in tow.

Suddenly, the little one (obviously, with the terrible two's) let loose with a wild tantrum which caused all heads in the coffee shop to turn around.

Embarrassed, the exasperated dad dashed outside in a bold-faced effort to quiet the little darling (errr!) without disturbing the sleepy-eyed patrons still grinding into gear.

"Short of putting a muzzle on the kid, what can you do in a situation like that," I chuckled to the mid-forties WeHo dude (gay) across the table.

"Not have them," he quipped without skipping-a-beat.

Amen!

Race...relations in LA LA Land! Telling it like it is...

'Ya know you're in Los Angeles if you spy African Americans chauffeuring city dwellers around on the Metro Bus line and delivering up the morning mail, Latinos manning service counters and drive-thru windows at fast-food take-outs, and Asian bakers rustling up doughnuts with sprinkles on 'em for rush-hour commuters to munch on during the hectic trek across town.

And, what about the white folks?

Well, they're sipping on hot java in comfy leather easy-chairs at Starbucks, complaining about it to anyone within earshot.

It's a rat race out here on the West Coast, alright!

Starbucks...down on homeless! Nope, no compassion, just greed...

I was sipping a cup of piping-hot tea @ the Starbucks WeHo/24 Hour Fitness outlet when one of the barristas strolled over with a purpose and started to arrange four big leather easy-chairs in a "nook-like" setting.

I smiled.

"Cozy," I chuckled.

The pretty mid-twenties employee noted in a firm (but condescending tone of voice) that the Starbucks strategy was to psychologically "steer" guests who sauntered in the front door in the direction of the front counter & cashier so they wouldn't take a side route straight to the restroom.

I pointed out at this juncture that some patrons may have to relieve themselves.

So, of course, it was not only logical - but practical - that they may be inclined to head to the water closet first (limey term for head).

After all, what if they - as a Valley-girl might say:

"Like, really have-ta go".

A latte or specially-ordered cup of java takes a few seconds to conjure up - which means (perhaps tragically in some instances) that the poor soul have to cross their legs (and pray!) while they wait for the tasty beverage to appear at the take-out.

Then, after selecting a table and plunking down the Starbucks goodies, there would be a trot across the trendy cafe to the "John".

In that event, the beverage would have cooled off considerably by the time the patron was ready to stretch back and toss it back!

Of course, these youngsters aren't bright enough to figure that one out for themselves.

The neatly-attired personnel at Starbucks are trained to just Sell! Sell! Sell!

And now - exhibit their skills at giving a hefty heave-ho to the homeless - when they haplessly wander through the "unwelcome" door.

"They smell," she sniped - with what I thought for one sliver of a second was a pointed nod in my direction - as she moved on to carry out the rest of her perfunctory duties.

At this juncture, I surreptitiously sniffed my own "pits" (when no one was glancing in my direction) and did the old hand-cup gesture at my mouth (breathing out slowly) to verify my breath was not a dragon Meister, either.

In the final analysis?

No wonder the logo for the Seattle-based giant has become the symbol of greed!

Starbucks...glum faces on staff and no Christmas Spirit! Bah Humbug...

Lately, when I've strolled into Starbucks in West Hollywood, the experience has been a real bummer.

Maybe the night staff are just burnt out, who knows.

Customers have not only been encountering glum faces, but tend to be left waiting in line 'til self-absorbed disorganized staff get their butts in gear.

Normally, Starbucks employs pleasant out-going personnel, who provide service with a smile.

Now-a-days, their baristas are of the low-energy kind that man the counters at a handful of those other mediocre cafe outlets 'round town.

Notwithstanding, there is little holiday cheer inside the doors to write home about.

The only X-mas decorations I spied were those sprucing up products sprinkled about here and there in unimaginative displays on lacklustre shelves.

Yes, some things never change.

The Seattle-based coffee giant continues in their efforts to foist a myriad of goods on consumers (that they don't want or need) when they stride through the sterile doors.

No X-Mas tree. No twinkling lights.

And, nary a strain of a Christmas Carol overhead, aimed at lulling patrons into the warmth and joy of a pervasive holiday spirit which is evident elsewhere around the thriving metropolis.

Starbucks is being relegated to a lower status among coffee-lovers as a result.

Today, many patrons just slip in to check e-mail on the laptop, snap up a quick coffee on-the-go, then head off to cheerier climbs where the meaning of cozy hospitality is alive and well.

Uh-huh.

Starbucks is no longer a destination place to hook up with friends and while away an hour or two of good-natured fun.

If you ask me, Scrooge has hit Starbucks big time.

Bah Humbug!

Dogs...leash Fido, please! Animal Bites on rise...

A growing number of residents in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are out-and-about in the neighborhood these days with their dogs in tow.

Some own two or three dogs, which I find excessive.

But, as long as they have the space - and properly care for the animals - it is of no consequence to me.

Unfortunately - for some - it means an encroachment on their space.

Don't get me wrong. I love animals.

Over the years I have owned a few dogs and cats.

When I was a kid, I was fortunate to have been allowed to have a rabbit (Casper), a couple of gold fish, and even a tamed monkey!

Animals apparently have great affection for me, too.

In fact, when I walk down the street, owners are often surprised when their pets strain at their leashes to get up-close and personal with me.

"He never likes anyone," they utter in disbelief.

At UCLA - staff are amazed when they spy a stray cat (who has - til now - maintained a skitzy distance from all of them) stroll up, rub his feline body up and down against my leg, and allow me to pet him affectionately.

Just yesterday morning - as I sauntered by a young fellow exercising three strapping big dogs - the trio of mutts struggled to surge forward so they could lick my hand.

As I passed - and when there was a bit of slack in the leash - one of the dogs managed to lunge forward, jump on top of me, and plant a sloppy kiss on my hand.

Well - they don't call me St. Francis - for no good reason!

So, an incident the other morning, threw me off a tad.

As I bent over to pluck up a magazine from the stall where it was being stored in front of Starbucks, a wiry little dog - a few inches from my hand - wagged his tail and started to move forward as if he wanted to lick my hand.

Just as he was about to nudge his face against my skin - he suddenly barked fiercely - and snapped at me.

The outburst was ferocious enough to startle all the patrons who instantly whirled around in their seats to get a look-see.

Whoa boy!

If that little outburst by Fido was an isolated incident - then maybe it was a warning that the dog (who appeared to be getting on in years) may be "losing it".

If that was not the case, the owner - who was standing a foot or two away - should have pulled the dog back or at least warned me about his erratic behaviour.

After the incident, he didn't even offer up an apology.

Bad doggie etiquette!

That is the problem basically.

Although quite a few dog owners pick up after their pets, they often tend to fall short in meeting their responsibilities in respect to their adorable pets.

For instance, a handful allow their dogs to roam freely without a leash.

Other thoughtless owners, tie 'em up near the front door of a cafe, then pop inside for a quick jolt of java with nary a thought.

Outside, meanwhile - the unattended pet is often lunging at customers, snapping at other dogs, or howling incessantly for his Master.

It is wholly possible that some residents may actually have a fear of dogs, so it appears a tad irresponsible for the dog owners not to consider that fact.

In view of this - some dog owners need to display a little more intelligence - when they tether up their dogs on the street.

Why not curb them a few steps away from the front door out of harm's way?

That would be the smart thing to do.

Duh!

Some are in denial, too.

One woman left her dog on a leash at the entrance of Pavilion's one fine day.

On a handful of occasions - when people exited or entered the store - the dog lurched forward and snarled at them.

Fortunately, the patrons in question, were able to recoil in time to escape a potentially nasty bite.

When the young woman returned to collect her dog, a few of the staff (who often sit outside for a snack on their break) informed her about the vicious attacks on shoppers as they exited the store.

Instead of showing remorse, she got angry.

"He's a sweet dog. He would never do that," she retorted as she untied him and strode off in a huff.

Everyone shook their heads in disbelief!

Just last year, I had one incident that actually traumatized me for about a day or two.

I was walking along the trail on the edge of the Beverly Hills flats - when two women chatting idly amongst themselves - approached me with a dog trotting alongside off his leash.

Just as I was about to pass - the dog shot forward without warning - and bit into a jacket I was carrying in my hand.

As he tugged on the jacket - rather than struggle with the pup - I released the windbreaker from my grasp.

The dog proceeded to shake the jacket violently back and forth - for about thirty seconds - then dropped it to the ground.

I was in a state of shock, literally.

The woman apologized profusely.

Judging from the emotion in her voice, it was obvious she was quite upset by what had transpired.

So, I just waved her off as best I could - and for her sake - told her it was okay and that she should not worry about it.

But, I was a little leery of dogs for a day or two after that incident.

I felt sorry for one woman who was not so lucky.

A dog darted up to her one day, wagged his tail, and attempted to jump up on her.

Her natural reaction was to bend over and stroke his head.

Without warning - he jumped up - and bit her in the face.

She ended up with several stitches and had to wear a large surgical bandage on her face for days.

A survey by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta ("CDC") concluded that dogs bite more than 4.7 million people annually.

Almost 800,000 bites per year - one out of every 6 - are serious enough to require medical attention. (Weiss HB, Friedman D, Coben JH. Incidence of dog bite injuries treated in emergency departments. JAMA 1998;279:51-53.)

According to a Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings.

In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question.

Clifton has stated:

"If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a pit bull terrier or a Rottweiler has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed--and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price.

"Pit bulls and Rottweilers are accordingly dogs who not only must be handled with special precautions, but also must be regulated with special requirements appropriate to the risk they may pose to the public and other animals, if they are to be kept at all."

As we all end up in closer quarters, and areas become more populated, it is especially important that residents be mindful of the rights of others and their entitlement to space.

People have right to walk their pets - yes - but those without 'em also have a right to stroll outside freely without being forced to deal with problem dogs.

That is why there are applicable laws are in force.

The issues have been thrashed out by political leaders over the years - and subsequently - proper measures have been taken to ensure the rights of all are observed in the community.

In the analysis, I am not blaming the dogs.

After all, it's not their fault.

It's the fault of dog owners who are irresponsible and derelict in their moral and legal obligations.
Heh, time to curb your selfishness, pet owners.

And, leash your dogs, please!
