7-11...free slurpee day! July 11th at participating outlets...

When I tumbled out of bed at the crack-of-dawn this morning, I just knew July 11th was an important day, but why?

Slipped my mind!

Oh-oh!

Just hit me like a ton of bricks.

It's my older brother's birthday.

Happy "B" Day, Wayne!

Oh, and one more thing, it's also 7-11's birthday, too!

And, guess what?

To celebrate, 7-11 is serving up delicious mouth-watering slurpees all day at local participating outlets for free (where I can also pluck up the Sunday Times, too!)

Some are speculating that the always-open variety chain will serve five million of the frozen carbonated drinks in participating stores across the United States and Canada on this festive occasion.

"7-Eleven Day has become so popular that people mark it as a recurring event on their calendars," joked Stefanie Olson to one media outlet (7-Eleven category manager for Slurpee and Big Gulp beverages).

The 7.11-ounce slurpee drinks should hit the spot in Las Vegas, where the temperatures have been soaring in recent days, prompting tourists and locals alike to rustle up something thirst-quenching to satisfy the need.

See 'ya there!

711...Las Vegas store overcharges tourists! Fails to honor posted prices...

The desert heat has been so intense today, that I have been constantly gasping for air as a result of dry mouth!

Was there a quick remedy?

Dunno!

But, I dashed into 711 on my trek back to my Hotel to try to rustle up something.

One product claimed to have little beads of quick-acting ingredients that "burst" in the mouth to trigger instant relief.

So, at $1.39 a pop, I thought I'd give it a shot.

When I handed over the little miracle box to the cashier or scanning, he informed me I owed $1.69.

Huh?

I asked the man with the cautious demeanor if he charged me tax, so I could fathom the discrepancy in the price.

"No. The price is $1.39."

At this point, I noted that the sales tag said it was $1.39.

Oh, he was a sly deceptive one, alright.

"That's for the item below it," he responded without skipping-a-beat.

Sure that I was correct, I noted that I was going to go back, to double-check the price.

Understandably, his eyes went wide!

I strolled back and scanned the shelf.

Uh-huh!

The item below my selection was also $1.39.

The package of gum above both selections was $1.39, too.

I hadn't screwed up by any stretch of the imagination.

By now, a couple of people in the store recognized me, and they all stood staring in my direction as I strode back down the aisle to report the results of my mini-investigation (!).

"Sir, the price is $1.39. You need to get your prices straight."

For starters, overcharging an individual, amounts to theft (doesn't it?).

In this instant case, it may even be a case of a deliberate conspiracy to rip-off consumers.

For example, I couldn't help but notice that when the cashier collected the money for customer  purchases, he rarely gave a receipt unless asked.

Is this unscrupulous employee pocketing the difference without his boss being any-the-wiser?

Notwithstanding, it should be noted that in California we have a law that stipulates a store owner must sell the item to the customer for the price posted on the shelf.

Doesn't Nevada have such a safeguard to protect consumers from deceptive business practices, theft, and fraud?

Or, do the City Officials take the position that tourists are fair game?

News at 11!

711...hiring scary people in need of therapy!

Bring back the stylish dame!

Occasionally, I pop into a 711 at the corner of Holloway & La Cienega to pick up the morning paper and snatch up a cup of Java.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks, management there has hired a female (?) cashier with an obvious personality disorder.

Strolling in to shop there now is quite an uncomfortable experience.

Of course, one has only to take a gander at the screwball character, to fathom what her problem is!

The poor little misfit is overweight, for starters.

Worse than that, she has no fashion sense or even a smidgen of self-awareness.

After botching a dye job, for some inexplicable reason, the twenty-something (I'm being kind) non-entity chose to sculpt the mish-mash of yucky orange-yellow-green freakish strands into a little pyramid on top.

Does she honestly take a glance in the mirror each morning and imagine that she looks the least bit cool or attractive?

Today, she appeared to have a fixation on me.

When I strode towards the coffee counter, she stopped in her tracks, blocked my path, and stared at me.

Nope, she wouldn't get out of the way.

So creepy, it made my skin crawl!

When I side-stepped her to let her pass, she copied my action to a "t", and remained standing "this-close" to the left of me.

Kookoo, eh?

Her weirdness walked off to another section of the store, but within secs, was back at my side paying attention to every minute detail as I added cream, stirred the piping-hot liquid into a tasty blend, then crowned the disposable cup with a lid.

She followed in unison as I trekked over to the cash register - albeit in line behind the display case - then stood there at the check-out looking for-all-the-world like an empty-headed zombie.

Now, I understand why well-known celebrities go up-the-wall when they experience the same kind of bizarre conduct from strangers running rampant all around 'em in the streets, when they're dining at a trendy restaurant, or out on a shopping spree on Robertson.

These weirdos need to get a life!

I wanted to advise the woman, who had all the personality and charm of a worm, that her behaviour was odd.

"Maybe you should get some therapy," I imagined myself saying in a straight-forward heart-to-heart.

But, my spiritual teachings urge compassion.

So, I smiled politely, said a little prayer for her, and exited politely.

Needless to say, I won't be patronizing that convenience store again.

If she is mentally imbalanced, I certainly don't want to encourage her.

Henry Miller said it best:

"There is no salvation in becoming adapted to a world (or person?) which is crazy."

Barack Obama...merchandising $$$ going to charity???

Is Barack wise to the fact there's a cup with his image on it?

I breezed into 711 this morning for a drop of Java when I spied a mug with a Barack Obama image on its face in a bold eye-catching red white and blue color scheme.

In the near future, I expect panhandlers to be carousing the streets with one firmly clenched in hand, begging for change.

A stimulus cup?

I wonder, has Barack authorized the use of his "image" for licensing purposes?

If so, does the PREZ get a cut of the profits?

In view of the fact the product-maker appears to be capitalizing on the "Presidency", will a percentage of the profits go to an American-based charity?

Enquiring minds want to know!

A tip for Obama as he struggles to get his initiatives passed!

Rite-Aid...711. 'Tis the season to be wary! Count your change...

One morning I popped into Rite Aid at their location at Long Beach and Willow to pick up a copy of the daily paper.

If the LA TIMES isn't purchased from a box on the street, retailers charge 4 cents above and beyond the regular price of fifty cents.

I handed the cashier at the counter $5.04 to make the computation simple.

Imagine my surprise when the tall lumbering fellow handed me back $3.50 - yes - my change was a buck short.

Did he miscount the change - I mean - was it an innocent mistake?

Or was the shortfall intentional?

In view of fact he neglected to give me a receipt, I was forced to consider the worst: the employee was skimming cash off the top from unsuspecting customers.

Yes, 'tis the season to take advantage of a shopper's good spirits!

There are other scams going down, too, during the festive season.

On many occasions, I've witnessed a cashier at a liquor convenience store tabulate the purchases without running them through a register and or providing a receipt.

When a shopper asked for a precise tabulation of the purchase, I noticed that when the groceries were re-added, the total generally fluctuated by various sums and always to the buyer's advantage!

Yup, unscrupulous store owners try to overcharge the customer - and claim "innocent mistake" - when caught.
In addition, there appears to be some ongoing dishonesty with regard to products without price tags affixed.

At stores I patronize regularly, I have noticed there is a tendency for part-time staff to overcharge on unmarked items.

It may seem petty to some to quibble over such matters, but personally, I don't like being ripped off.

Besides, it's the principle of the thing.

There's also some sleight of hand going down too, which recently came to my attention, as well.

For instance, in the old days a cashier would count out your change to the penny in your hand.

Today, the coins are dropped quickly into the consumer's hand, leaving it up to the individual to check for accuracy.

I guess it's human nature.

Many customers don't count the change in front of the store employee for fear of inferring they don't trust the cashier or giving off the impression they are cheap.

Bad idea!

Each time I made a point of checking my change in recent weeks, I noticed an alarming on-going trend.

When I counted the coins in my sweaty hand, I was usually short-changed anywhere from twenty-five cents to a dollar. Small change?

Not when you consider the fact that coins are palmed throughout the day to dozens of customers. It all adds up, don't you think?

Caution should be extended to public transportation, too; after all, pick-pockets have been known to take advantage of the jostling bumping crowds during the holiday season to slip into pockets unnoticed and steal wallets.

Quick crafty scoundrels are are stealthy and skilled enough to slip a watch right off an unsuspecting traveller's wrist.

Yes, 'tis the season to be wary!

Oh, by the way, Happy Holidays!
