Britney Spears...to sashay into Nikki Beach Par-tay! "Circus Girl" the toast of Vegas!

The last time I spied Britney Spears poolside in the desert oasis was a couple of years ago when I attended the local film festival - CineVegas - at a handful of venues around town.

I was interviewing celebs on the red carpet when I happened to strike up a rapport with a couple of the local paparazzi who plied me with juicy inside tidbits about Ms. Spears.

Uh-huh!

Scandal-ridden Brit was suffering from the blues when she jetted in to town for a respite from it all that week.

"Britney is hunkered down in a Condo upstairs," one of the professional snoops confided in me.

"She's a good friend of the Hotel owner, George Maloof," he underscored, as an afterthought.

I was quite familiar with the scuttlebutt.

Ms. Spear's musical persona was in the dumper and rumors abounded that Maloof was going to sign her to a contract with the specific aim of raising up her wobbling career like a Phoenix from the ashes.

The two outgoing down-to-earth dudes were hanging out downstairs anxious to get a "money shot" before she skipped town.

"Good luck," I chuckled, as I headed off to a chic soiree I was invited to on the pool deck.

Shortly after I sauntered in, there was as definite buzz in the air.

Yup!

Although Britney made a quiet entrance into the par-tay through a side-door, the news swept through the upscale party guests quicker than the speed of lightning, that the scandal-ridden Pop Queen was in their midst!

I reported on the event at the time.

By the way, I couldn't resist strolling by the vicinity where she was holding court, to get a gander myself.

OMG!

Britney and I actually exchanged glances!

Now, her handlers have announced that Britney will be attending the Grand Opening of Nikki Beach at the newly-renovated Tropicana Hotel on the weekend, after she performs live! on stage in a much-anticipated Las Vegas concert. (which I expect will be a sell-out).

No doubt, long queues will form at the glittering Hotel on that celebrated evening, when the young DIVA makes her grand entrance into the frenzied swirl of Las Vegas social life!

See 'ya there!

Race...relations in LA LA Land! Telling it like it is...

'Ya know you're in Los Angeles if you spy African Americans chauffeuring city dwellers around on the Metro Bus line and delivering up the morning mail, Latinos manning service counters and drive-thru windows at fast-food take-outs, and Asian bakers rustling up doughnuts with sprinkles on 'em for rush-hour commuters to munch on during the hectic trek across town.

And, what about the white folks?

Well, they're sipping on hot java in comfy leather easy-chairs at Starbucks, complaining about it to anyone within earshot.

It's a rat race out here on the West Coast, alright!

AFI Dallas...Drew Waters has star quality; Ella & Astronaut hits mark; Festival Scuttlebutt!

Occasionally, an individual stands out on the red carpet.

Call it the "it" factor, if you like.

For an actor, it is that indefinable "something" that sets them apart from any other performer.

And, Drew Waters - who is co-starring in a Dallas-shot feature (The Other Side of Paradise) - definitely has it in spades!

When I spied him strutting down the gauntlet last night, it was obvious to me - a former Theatrical Agent - that Mr. Waters was going to be catapulted into the stratosphere if only he got that lucky break.

"I nearly didn't get this part," he laughed.

"They thought I couldn't handle the role which is so unlike the characters I usually play."

Yes, he's clean cut and all American-looking - a dude who might conceivably play the hero, the Harvard Graduate, the All-Star Quarterback - or a myriad of other roles in that vein.

Since I don't intend to catch "The Other Side of Paradise" for a couple of reasons, I thought I'd copy-cat Robert Wright (the rock photographer from "Rock Prophecies" who took "Sick Puppies" under his wing and elevated them from relative obscurity to new levels of success in the music industry) and give this kid a mention with the hope that it will cast a spotlight on his career and stir up some interest.

I'll be watching from the sidelines and trust that my instinct is right on again!

Last night I also got to meet Alan Govenar who directed "Poetry of Exactitude".

It's a short film about Lucien Moucher, who has been crafting small-scale productions of carousels and fairground scenes, since 1946.

"It takes him one year to create one piece which is rendered with painstaking minute detail."

At a time when filmmakers are focusing on convoluted love stories, drug deals gone awry, glory films about the War in Iraq - you name it - it is darn refreshing to encounter an auteur who is documenting the work of gifted artists to ensure there is a chronicle of their efforts left behind.

There were some surprises over the weekend, too.

"Ella & the Astronaut", featured in Shorts Program I, blew me away.

It's a film about one girl's journey to her secret hiding spot where she and Astronaut Henry can travel to the stars. (Directed by Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck & Robert Machoian)

For me, it was delightful filmmaking, which hit the spot.

There were some go-getters hawking their wares on the carpet past week, too.

One that struck me as genuine and deserving of accollades was Benjamin Kegan who directed "Team Taliban".

Although I haven't seen this short, the buzz for it has been exceptional.

In fact, my peers this week, noted how impressed they were with the young man currently attending school in Washington State.

"Team Taliban" provides a provocative glimpse into the world of Adeel Adam, a devout Muslim-American wrestler, who struggles to find a balance between his faith and his wrestling career.

According to Kegan, his project explores the impact of the war on terror in American culture through the unique lens of professional wrestling.

At some point, I hope to take in "Kassim: the Dream".

Director/Screenwriter Kief Davidson won me right-off-the-bat when he noted I reminded him of his Uncle!

Smart guy!

The intriguing tale is about a Junior Middleweight Champion of the world who was abducted when he was a child and inducted into a rebel army at the tender age of 6.

AFI Fest describes The Dream this way:
"Director Kief Davidson and Executive Producer Forest Whitaker gives us an intimate portrait of a captivating and charismatic young athlete who feels compelled to transform a legacy of sorrow into hope and inspiration."

Later in the week, "Hunger" - a film I was greatly impacted by at AFI LA last fall, will be screening locally.

I highly recommend the poignant story about a 1981 Hunger strike initiated by the Irish Republican Army leader Bobby Sands.

George Wawa, an AFI photographer, has been on the ball with a his team - too - capturing all the events on film so that various media outlets will have professional stills to match-up with their news coverage.
I ended up down at the Festival Lounge later at Victory Park once my assignments for the day were covered, kicked up my heels, and mingled with the tony Dallas elite for a couple of hours.

A couture Swimwear fashion show by Shawari - featuring a bevy of buffed studs and sexy scantilly-clad female models, revved up the crowd, by the way.

Tonight, I plan to attend the Red Carpet event for "The Burning Plain" which is being touted as a must-see film, starring Charlize Theron and Kim Bassinger.

Sorry folks, word from my inside sources have informed me the tickets are sold out.

I'll attend the gala afterwards and report in tomorrow with all the juicy tidbits!

Christian Bale...KROQ jocks pat selves on back! Attack mode for media...

Who's sweating?

KROQ disc jockeys gave kudos all 'round this morning on air.

Yup, they patted themselves on the back.

"Why did they want to interview us," one sleepy-headed disc flapper queried his co-workers, who were chortling it up on the low-brow talk fest.

"Because Bale came to us. No one else had the story."

"Yeah, he said we made him laugh all week, so that's why he dialed in," another airhead boasted on the sidelines in the studio.

Then, the gang of merry pranksters played a clip of a reporter from "Extra" who interviewed the KROQ staffers.

It's kind of like a snake eating itself up, one cackled.

"Yeah," another chimed in, "it's like the pilot at a plane crash. If you can't talk to the pilot, then latch onto a bystander to get the goods."

"We were the only ones Bale would talk to, that's why."

According to the Extra staffer, this is what went down.

"It was completely off the cuff with KROQ disc jockeys," he excitedly reported to his rapt audience.

"It wasn't planned, so they weren't prepared with any questions or anything."

At this juncture, they proceeded to tear him to shreds!

So much for biting the hand that feeds you, eh?

The dudes were inclined to also take jabs at a female reporter at highly-rated TV news show - the obnoxious inflections in her voice and the overly-dramatic use of sensational adjectives and colorful superlatives, in particular - and the manner in which she described the wild Bale "tirade" which had the country wagging their tongues all last week.

In fact - in spite of the fact they criticized others for much ado about nothing - the dim-witted jocks continued with their field day ad nauseam as they took pot shots at bloggers, lambasted newsies on the net, and so forth and so on.

"It was as if Bale's apology wasn't enough. Too late," one scoffed.

"Did they expect Bale to come to their home in person?"

At this point, a female employee noted that during the tirade the hothead actor appeared to carry over with his "American" accent during the dressing-down of the Director of Photography.

Indeed, on air on Friday, Mr. Bale had a noticeable English accent which was the norm.

So, bored fools that they are, they proceeded to muse aloud.

"Do you suppose he was so in character that it was difficult for him to step out of that intense acting situation?"

On the heels of this insightful remark (!), they theorized that the Bale incident may prompt filmgoers - and the curious - to take in the flick when it is released, so they can fathom for themselves what kind of intense acting he was involved in that resulted in such a bizarre turn-of-events to unfold for almost four minutes on set.

Just maybe, it was all a publicity stunt concocted by Bale, to prop up a flailing career?

Yeah, those Dudes at KROQ are such lapdogs!

They'll eat anythin' up!

When it comes down to it, judging by what I heard bright and early at the crack of dawn, they're just a bunch of inglorious bast**ds with sh** for brains!

AFI FEST...Publicity Director John Wildman lashes out! The man is off his rocker...

Yesterday, I penned a post noting a couple of screw-ups that occurred this past week at the AFI Film Fest, due to the incompetence and inexperience of John Wildman and his staff in the publicity department.

In particular, I pointed out that information Mr. Wildman provided to me was incorrect, which resulted in a bit of an uproar in the film community.

For example, Wildman informed me personally that Meryl Streep would not be appearing on the red carpet at the Premiere of "DOUBT" slated for screening on October 30th.

Ms. Streep did stroll down the red carpet the next night, in fact.

Subsequently - I was forced to edit a post to explain the snafu to my readers and film buffs - especially in view of the fact that one AFI supporter (unfamiliar with the facts) blamed me for reporting erroneous information.

In addition, I pointed out in the post that Mr. Wildman's staff provided contact information for Ms. Streep and Joaquin Phoenix which was also incorrect.

In a response communication, Mr. Wildman tried to wiggle out of blame.

For example, he noted for the record that AFI updates information and sometimes get it wrong. (okay!)

Instead of resting his case there, he proceeded to snidely remark:

"But, seriously Joaquin Phoenix? Meryl Streep?"

John, I have copies of the e-mails that confirm my allegations to be true.

Some of the issues he addressed related to my comments about his shoddy set-up at the Roosevelt Hotel.

For example, I noted in my post that when I stopped into the publicity director's office at the Roosevelt on Wednesday to pick up my media badge, it was obvious from the poorly-set-up press headquarters that Wildman and his staff were not only inexperienced but incompetent as well.

His reply?

"I'm a publicity director. Not an interior decorator."

I don't expect you to be, John.

An intelligent "boss" in charge of a department such as yours - with an ounce of experience and know-how - would have simply farmed the task out if they weren't capable of putting together a professional presentation themselves.

It's the details, man!

If Mr. Wildman was a mature individual - with a smaller ego and a bigger IQ - he would have fessed up to his shortcomings without any qualms.

After all, it's not very intelligent or productive to ignore the obvious.

Has the man such little self-awareness?

In the communication he zipped off, without much thought or reflection, he even tried to toss the blame on me.

For example, in a condescending manner, he inferred that I didn't know any better.

After all, her asserted, I was "new".

Ha!

As I noted in a response e mail today, I am certainly not new!

If anything, I am getting long in the tooth.

In fact, I have been involved hands-on in show biz and the film industry - in a myriad of capacities - for over thirty years!

I was in front of the camera when Mr. Wildman was still pooping his drawers!

And, his mother was wiping his snotty little nose.

Oh, but Mr. Wildman had so much more to toss into the fray.

He chirped that I didn't know anything about festivals or how they worked!

Because he has handled a couple, he's suddenly the expert, eh?

Well, I had a big guffaw over that one!

I have been attending and reporting on festivals for years!

I not only know how they work, but why they don't, when they don't.

When a Director at a Film Festival is "pig-headed" - doesn't know who key players are in the industry, and allows an overblown sense of self-importance get the better of him - then it's time to call it a day.

Mr. Wildman concluded his little diatribe by lamenting that I must have had a bad day.

On the contrary, my week was smashing!

In closing, he tried to put a muzzle on me and restrict my right to free speech.

He issued a directive that I focus on the filmmakers.

"They are the story. Not me."

Duh!

As I noted in a follow-up, I don't just report on the films and their makers.

On the contrary!

I also pen commentary on the scuttlebutt - on the red carpet, off of it - and behind-the-scenes.

Don't expect me to wax poetic in a phony puff piece to bolster a star's ego, though.

I may be inclined to throw a spotlight on the AFI FEST, however, and what I perceive as a "clubby" elitist organization run by a handful of snobby individuals who are under the mistaken impression that their sh** doesn't stink.

To cast a blind eye all to that would be a ludicrous notion.

Quentin Tarantino once said:

"I don't believe in elitism. I don't think the audience is this dumb person that is lower than me. I am the audience."
