Britney Spears...zooms into Castro to greet fans! ABC TV switches gears for damage control!

Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
San Francisco

The big event over the weekend in San Francisco was the free Britney Spears concert in the Castro District.

Wait a minute, wasn't the much-ballyhooed event relcoated to the Bill Graham Civic Center in downtown San Francisco?

Well, yes, in the 11th hour a decision was made by ABC brass to switch venues.

This is where it gets tricky!

Initially, ABC's "Good Morning America" cited security issues as grounds for tossing the Pop Diva's blow-out gig at the indoor location instead of in the throbbing groin of of a neighborhood affectionately referred to by the locals as "gay gulch".

But, after the word trickled back that residents of the Castro District felt "snubbed" by the last-minute Britney no-show (for dubious reasons), the suits did an about-face and attempted emergency damage control.

Uh-huh!

Suddenly, the focus was shifted to dark ominous clouds that had been rumbling overhead in recent days and - of course - cries that inclement weather might force a cancellation altogether!

The clever producers seized on the timely weather forecast to explain away their switcheroo - after-the-fact - which raised a few pretty preened eyebrows in the process.

In fact, over the weekend in the picturesque City by the Bay, a posse of gussied-up Drag Queens proceeded to poke fun at Britney in a sort-of light-hearted roast.

For example, comics at a "Britney Night Drag Show" (at a trendy watering hole South of Market) sashayed up on stage to lampoon the Diva, her propensity to slurp down mocha lattes, dangle cigarettes off the edge of a pouty lip, and play up her baby-doll demeanour for whatever reason that was blowing in the wind that day!

What a hoot!

Heklina - a local celeb (and Icon in her own right) - pointed an accusing finger at Ms. Spears in the wake of all the controversy hovering over Brit's pending arrival in fag heaven.

"This whole Castro appearance, I think, was born in some marketing room somewhere," she blabbed to everyone within earshot.

Needless to say, Brit was anxious to offer an olive branch, in view of the wagging tongues that were chirping incessantly - and not always so favorably - around the pop landscape.

Even the editors at the San Francisco Chronicle must have been miffed; after all, they published in Sunday's Edition, that Britney was performing on stage in the Castro that day.

Ooops!

ABC's announcement was issued too late to prevent a snafu!

Notwithstanding,  it is doubtful many bought their excuses, in view of the obvious.

Hasn't ABC ever facilitated the use of spritely-colored eye-catching canvas tents, when the threat of rain was expected to spoil a staged event outdoors just prior to curtain?

Needless to say, on the heels of her entertaining upbeat stage show (OMG! Brit allegedly lip-synched the tunes in spite of the fact she was indoors!), the perky pop star was inclined to zoom up to the Castro District to mingle with a gaggle of her die-hard fans in the street as she popped in-and-out-of a handful of shops on the look-out for spiffy threads to don.

In particular, Ms. Spears also made a point of slipping into one community outlet, that raises funds for A.I.D.S. research, funding, and assistance to the afflicted.

Good on you, Brit!

Bottom line, Ms. Spears saved herself from toppling over the edge of the Abyss, thankfully for her wildly supportive fans!

Later!

Britney Spears...San Francisco Concert! Castro shopkeepers complain!

When news broke that Britney Spears was slated to appear at an outdoor concert for free in the Castro District all the residents of the trendy community were ecstatic!

In spite of the obvious coupe for the City by the Bay - a handful of retailers in the area - complained that a swarm of concert-goers would overwhelm the streets, cause traffic jams, and clog a pathway to their front doors.

Imagine that!

What an absurd selfish notion!

In fact - Good Morning America (who is hosting the free event) - not only intends to broadcast the taped performance on March 29th, but also feature a jazzy "travelogue" (with the specific aim of boosting tourism in the picturesque European-style destination city).

Before all the "star dust" settles, there will be an avalanche of National exposure - not only for the LGBT community - but also for the delightful town with a truckload of charms to offer the savvy world traveller.

Scott Wiener (District 8 Supervisor) gushed to local reporters that it was thrilling day for the Castro District (in spite of the whining of the party-poopers).

"It will bring out a lot of traffic that day. It is a great promotion for San Francisco," he chirped, excitedly.

Indeed!

Unfortunately, due to alleged security issues, the concert was moved to the Civic Center.

The ABC special event will tape tomorrow, Sunday March 27th (between 12 noon and 1 p.m.), and broadcast on Tuesday, March 29th (2011).

The concert has been timed to be air in tandem with Britney's new sizzling-hot album "Femme Fatale".

See 'ya there!

Britney Spears...Castro District street gig revs up! Local fans ecstatic!

This gay old town is all-a-buzz over the sizzling news that still-sexy chanteuse - Britney Spears - will be hauling her pretty a** into the Bay area at the end of the month to entertain live! in front of the historic Art-Deco Castro Theatre.

Britney music enthusiasts are ecstatic!

In the wake of the initial scuttlebutt that floated around the blogosphere and in the mainstream media last week, all the juicy details of the Pop Star's itinerary have managed to leak out, fortunately for us nose-bodies in the biz anxious to be on top of things.

Tongues have been wagging that Brit is anxious to woo back LGBT fans who may have drifted from the fold in recent years to follow wildly popular Lady Gaga during her fall from Grace.

"Good Morning America" will play host to the concert which will be staged smack-dab in the middle of the bustling city.

Of course, Castro Street will be blocked-off, so die-hard commuters are forewarned to take heed to avoid getting caught up in a snarl of traffic on March 27th when the gig will be taped.

Britney's performance is expected to be broadcast a couple of days later on March 29th.

At press time, no estimates of the costs were forthcoming, but - just betcha - they'll be staggering!

But, generous ABC is footing the bill, so who cares?

Obviously, the suits at the Network have their eye on the ratings bonanza that lurks in the wings (and weeks) ahead.

I expect that advertisers are snapping up commercial spots right now - as I spout off at-the-mouth - to be sure they snatch up a piece of the hot-and-heavy action.
Ms. Spears will fly in to San Francisco a few days early, so she can meet-and-greet meet with a handful of local organizations - such as the "Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center" and the ever-popular "Larkin Street Youth Services" - for starters.

That's the giving spirit, Brit!

According to organizers, a lucky few will land free tickets to the event.

I expect local Radio Stations will be involved in contest give-a-ways 'til curtain call.

See 'ya there!

San Francisco...plaid shirts! Tongues heard wagging in Castro District!

Rugged-looking plaid shirt always in Vogue!

According to the scuttlebutt, life is a bitch for shoppers out for a bargain in second-hand shops in the Castro District (affectionately known to the locals as gay gulch).
For starters, dudes are SOL if they trot into "Out of the Closet" or "Goodwill" stores, especially when it comes to rugged street wear with masculine appeal.

"All the plaid shirts have been snatched up by the Dykes," one disgruntled fashionista grumbled to a buddy just this afternoon on Market Street.

Of course, now that John Gallianos is on the "outs" with Dior, it's wholly possible that there may be an influx of stylish threads showing up on the racks in coming days.

Caution, guys!

Delicately remove the labels, or you may be accused of being a Nazi sympathizer!

Ouch!

Castro Street Fair...San Francisco! Freebies! Cum towels! Political candidates!

A posse of handsome men posed in the streets, at festive tents local businesses gave out freebies, Music blared, and Political candidates strolled among voters seeking support.

Ah, I must have stumbled on the Castro Street Fair that rolls around about this time of the year.

Thousands spent a leisurely day gobbling up tasty food, slurping down thirst-quenching draft beer, and signing up for a myriad of contest give-a-ways for spas, all-expense-paid trips, you name it.

Mainstream entities - such as the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Citibank - did not blush or bat-an-eye at the mostly-gay presence that spilled out for blocks in every direction in the Castro District.

At one booth, I tried my luck with a free spin, and came out on "top" with a cum towel.

It's always a joy to win a prize that is useful and practical, don't 'ya think?

Many of the local organizations that provide services in the community - pet rescue, shelter for homeless teens, and support for those afflicted with A.I.D.S. - turned out in full force to give away freebies, hand out informational pamphlets, and - of course - rustle up funds.

Monterey Bay Aquarium gave out free tickets at their booth at the turn-of-a-spin, a truck for Monster drinks purred curbside as employees passed out free samples, and there were free condoms and lube samples in abundance to snap up.

On a more serious note, Community patrols handed out whistles with flyers that read:

Blow for Safety!

Residents were being encouraged to carry whistles on their person and blow 'em at any
sign of danger (fag bashing on the street, for instance) or call 9-11 for help.

"As a community we take care of ourselves"

At one booth, I tried to toss a ring on a dildo, to scoop up a prize.

Darn!

I missed by a country mile.

"I'm so much better at landing the real thing," I joked to the gathering crowd.

Reps for two political candiates - Scott Weiner and Raphael Mandelman - were stumping for votes.

Actually,  I managed to have a few words with Raphael about his platform, just after he graciously accepted a toke on a joke from a constituent.

Well, I hazard a guess he's for legalization of marijuana, eh?

Mandelman expressed his disdain for Meg Whitman when asked if he thought Jerry Brown had a good chance to win in the hotly-contested race for Governor.

When I asked him what was the main thrust of his political platform, he was pretty forthcoming.

"I'm for safety nets for people in these troubled times," he uttered up without hesitation, "And, for rent control."

The bald-headed candidate - who cut a fine swath in the heart of gay gulch - touted bike lanes, too.

"It's important for the environment."

At this juncture, I slipped away for a spot of a spot of ale on tap, and a scrumptious snack

But, not before noticing, that the locals were still streaming into the neighborhood  - to make the most of  - what turned out to be a perfect day.

'Til next year!

San Francisco...Ike's Place stays open due to legal snafu! Tasty sandwiches!

They say, that Ike's Place, has been a victim of its own success!

Daily, tourists and locals swarm the little hole-in-the wall fast-food take-out joint on Castro Street to snap up a tasty sandwhich - built from the bottom up at a reasonable price - and piled high with all the fixin's and trimmin's.

At a time when restaaurant owners have been struggling to keep their independent businesses open, Ike's has continued to lure a continous stream of hungry patrons to his humble establishment non-stop.

Unfortunately, neighbors and shopkeepers flanking Ike's - grew  weary of side-stepping long lines in the street and having to turn up their noses to avoid being assailed by the unpleasant odor of trash that was allegedly overflowing from garbage bins.

So, action was taken to evict Ike's.

Today, when the Sheriff's turned up to turf out Ike - though - a legal snafu prevented the Sheriff from proceeding with the eviction process.

According to employees, the legal documents incorretly named the parties, so the men-in-blue were barred from carrying out the distasteful task.

So, Ike's remained open today, as litigants scrambled to dot their i's and cross their t's.

Meanwhile, an attorney for Ike's noted for the record, they intend to have their day in court.

Until then, the hash will be slung, slabs of delicious bread will be swathed in thick butter, and a gaggle of hungry mouths will be satiated with the mouth-watering sandwhichs in the Castro District.

"They have 150 sandwich varieties," beamed one regular who looked liked he had scoffed down a few.

Who says you can't fight City Hall!

I'm rooting for the underdog and free enterprise.

How 'bout you?

Tasty!

Sweet Surrender...quaint San Francisco cafe gathering spot! Scrumptuous treats..

That's damn good tea!

Delicious Delectable Desserts

When I was up in San Francisco last week, I was fortunate to stumble on a quaint little cafe (on Market Street just shy of Castro) known as "Sweet Surrender".

For the most part, the locals tend to pop in for coffee (cafe au lait is my own first choice) and a mouth-watering dessert (delicious!) as they chat up friends.

For those who are inclined to sit back and ponder the world as the glorious parade passes by on the busy city steet outside, there are two large bay windows to gaze out of.

Personally, I tended to plunk myself down by a small water fountain, where I found the sound of the trickling water quite therapeutic.

Just recently, I learned that the bakery has been opened since 1962!

So, a number of notables, may have passed through those doors (Harvey Milk, for starters).

Although there is an inviting refrigerated display case brimming with fancy tarts that pack a high-calorie whallop, Sweet Surrender is known for eye-catching specialty cakes, which may be ordered up at their web site.

The "kids" who man the counter are easy-going and polite and a definite asset to the cozy little respite from it all.

If you're a people-watcher, then breeze in on weekend nights, when the java house is packed with a lot of eye candy!.

It's often been said that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.

Here, the old truism appears to rule the day!

Oftentimes, as I sipped on a piping-hot cup of tea and checked my e-mail, my nostrils were assailed by the tantalizing aroma of fresh-baked goods (after all, the kitchen is on site).

Yummy!

By the way, a small purchase will rustle you up two free hours of WiFi, too.

Munch on delectable treats as you cruise the internet satisfying a hunger of a different order.

Through my own satisfying experience, I have found that the cafe is one of the most relaxing places to do just that, you betcha.

Enjoy!

The owners display local artists' work each month!

Valentine's Day...Castro Street passionate about romance! Studly cupid sets his sights...

Although the much over-rated (ha!) Valentine's Day is two weeks off, romantic studs in the Castro District are on the prowl for a passionate love affair this spring already, you betcha.

If the window displays on Castro Street are any indication, expect a studly Cupid to set his sights on some lucky (lucky as in getting laid fellas) hot-blooded male come February 13th (Midnight) and remain a star-crossed lover throughout the celebrated day (when the romantically-inclined are bound to splurge on some chocolates, cologne, (an engagement ring!), or a bottle of bubbly expected to make the object of their desire light-headed (at which point any self-respecting wolf will move in for the kill).

If there is a "real" dude to match up with one of the two featured in the Video (click on link below) gift-wrap right away, please!

San Francisco...gay blades on the prowl! How to snag one...

Twist on Colt 45!

If you stroll around the Castro district and slip into a popular eatery for a bite to eat - or flip through a local rag - it becomes obvious to the astute observer with the keen ear and eye what is important to most upwardly mobile gay men in the hilly picturesque climbs here.

For starters - grooming and appearance are tantamount - to ensure a full dance card.

Shortly after I arrived in town, I took a glance in the mirror one morning and was aghast at how unruly my curly locks had become almost overnight.

Well, at least I have a headful of the lustrous stuff, eh?

Samson would be envious!

The locals tend to keep their strands close-cropped - or shave the head altogether - for a decidedly kept-up (kept?) look that definitely appeals (to other dudes in the Castro especially).

The cost of haircuts underscore their value, too.

In spite of the fact a Frisco resident keeps the cut quite short - and a trim takes about a second or two to finesse - no one here blinks at the $25 charge that most barbers (hairstylist sounds too prissy for the butch crowd here) ring up on the cash register with little aplomb.

Personally, I balked.

At a couple of the trendy salons I zip into down south in LA LA LAND, I usually pay considerably less.

The body electric is of paramount importance to the socially-correct, too.

While WeHo gym bunnies tend to toss on threads that reveal their buffed bods to the max (usually in solids in bold eye-catching colors) fashion savvy peacocks here tend to toss on jeans, shirts, and jacket combos in a designer vein predominatly crafted in chic sexy fabrics and hues that attract, arouse, whatever!

San Franciscans, known for their in-your-face gaeity, have no qualms about putting emphasis on what's going on beneath the perceived image, either.

After all, cleanliness and robust sexual health, are prerequisites for the active man-about-town.

So, I was not surprised when I spotted an ad for a web site known as:

 http://www.healthypenis.org/

Here, they keep a watchful eye on what's going on below theubiquitous belt (get their pipes cleaned, if necessary).

No barnacles on bottoms in Frisco proper.

How about yours?

I chuckled at the ad for "emergency" tans I spied one day while wolfing down my oatmeal at cozy Orphan Andy's.

http://www.mygaygo.com/

In the event a hot date saunters into the picture unexpectedly out-of-the-blue (with all the tourists flowing in and out of town it's bound to be more the norm than not) a dash of color and a quick douche perk up the confidence and mood of the man-on-the go who needs an edge to make headway over the competition.

In the alternative, a fat wallet will do.

At breakfast, tidbits of conversation zinging non-stop over my sleepy head, piqued my curiousity too.

Some fellas in the neighborhood wondered amongst themselves if the local meter maid bothered to determine if a car parked haplessly in front of a driveway belonged to the owner of the house

"My neighbor keeps parking in front of mine. What should I do," one handsome thirty-something male wailed.

In WeHo, they'd call the cops, 'fer sure.

Here, they are so genteel, that they're afraid to upset the unspoken golden rules.

Which reminds me, these well-turned out dudes, all act so cool!

I suppose every single guy (married ones, too) are potential bedmates, so they wisely mind their P's and Q's.

After all, after the midnight hour - when a bevy of drinkie-poohs have jolted the sensibilities and obliterated normal mores - pure unadulterated raw (anonymous) sex may be what's in order.

Therapists say that a potent sexual release often provides welcome relief from the hectic day's pent up tension and frustration which might otherwise cloy beneath the surface making one cranky.

Heh, it just hit me like a bolt of lightening.

Maybe,  that's why San Francisco males are so easy-going.

Unlike the prudes back east or to the north, they're constantly humming from that daily hunk of loving.

Gay studs pine to croon!

San Francisco...Peets Coffee pleasant ambience! Faulty unreliable wireless service...

Sullen faces a turn off!

If you're up in the Castro district at the crack of dawn and in dire need of a cup of steaming hot java - or soothing hot tea - Peets on Market is a hang out deserving of your kind patronage for the most part.

Stroll in at seven o'clock in the morning, and a posse of servers are on duty, anxious to deliver up your order with a smile (except for a sour puss or two with sullen faces who should think about moving on instead of taking out their discontent about their failings in life on the customers).

The display window at the counter is packed with scrumptious-looking goodies - bagels, scones, and appetizing cakes and cookies - that appear to have been home-baked out back.

And, there is a definite energy in the air, so unlike those other dreary places with all the attitude.

Some folks will argue that because I'm a famous individual in the glare of the spotlight, that the staff in cafes and trendy little watering holes, fall over me.

"You get special treatment," they chide.

True, for the most part, elsewhere.

When baristas normallyspy me coming, they hop to attention and assume their best behaviour, alright.

Here, though, the attractive well-heeled baristas treat all the customers with the same care and attention as they would a food critic there on the sly to pen a review (moi!)

By the way, Peets provides wireless service for folks on the go with any purchase (large or small).

However, there appears to be a bit of false advertising, in respect to that promise.

Either the wireless service is faulty, or slack attention to details may account for a persistent problem I have encountered over the past few days, while jostling around San Francisco taking in the sights.

For example, although the coupon for the wireless promises a two-hour session, on many occasion right when I am smack dab in the middle of a task the connection shuts down forty-or-fifty minutes later.
Annoying!

I have noticed that when a cashier rings up the customer's bill - usually they input the data - and issue the coupon for the wireless service on the spot.

But, on occasion, they open a drawer and snatch up a ready-made one and toss it at the patron.

Is it possible that the "prepared ones" have been sitting for so long that they are out-of-sync with the computers - hence - the reason the service shuts down before the promised hour?

If that's the case, an inquiring mind may wonder aloud, is some discrimination going down over there at Peets?

In spite of that glaring irregularity, and staff's tendency to gossip about customers when they are just out of earshot, the ambiece is quite appealing.

Logging on, and relaxing in these environs for an hour so, is sheer heaven (if you ignore the minions).

Also, the handsome strangers who tend to frequent this cafe are worth striking up a conversation with.

No one appears to mind if customers leash their pet pouch out front, either, where fresh water is generously provided,.

Ah, that "other place" could learn a lot about public relations (how to treat a customer) if they sauntered into the welcome revolving door at Peets.

But,  the folks at the Seattle-based outfit, are too busy flogging CD's, mugs, and packets of instant (!) coffee at exhorbitant prices.

See 'ya at Peets!

San Francisco...quaint Victorian houses on Castro! Design flourishes exquisite...

The othe morning at the crack of dawn, I was traipsing down Castro just above the well-travelled strip, when I spied a beautiful row of quaint Victorian houses tarted up to the hilt!

Fortunately, I was packing my HD Video camera, so I whipped it out and captured some footage of these exquisite architectural beauties that are a stand-out amid an otherwise drab and colorless part of Castro Street.

Enjoy!

San Francisco...imaginative Menswear display! Castro style...

Not enough folks in retail have any style!

In the video featured at the link below, the owner of the Menswear store located on Castro Street is just brimming with it, though.

A clever way to advertise a sale that is both eye-catching and original.

Kudos!

Castro...left bone in San Francisco! Pooper-scoopers & dog lovers...

Slain openly-gay politician Harvey Milk!

That was quite a dump!

Once you cruise into the Bay area, it becomes obvious that the locals are great dog lovers!

Everywhere you turn, a tail is wagging, and an owner's face is beaming.

So, of course, there are many pet shops in the Bay area that cater to a pet's nourishment and every playful whim.

In the Castro District, there is a delightful shop on the main strip, with an eye-catching window display.

Included in the mix of offerings are nifty T-shirts etched with hilarious slogans!

*Everyone deserves a good bone

There are caps which bark out catchy phrases, too.

Of course, this the celebrated birth place of the "pooper-scooper".

Long-time residents may recall that when Harvey Milk was in political office in San Francisco, he  introduced the City measure to ensure that "Masters" cleaned-up after their lovable pouches!

In Frisco, it's a dog's life, alright.

Woof!

San Francisco...Mark Abramson @ Books Inc! Synchronicity abounds with Russian River Rat author...

Yesterday was an intriguing day, but auspicious signs during the course of it, signalled I was on the right path and where I was meant to be according to the cosmic design.

Early in the day, when I was unable to locate the LA Times, I settled for the San Francisco Chronicle which I plucked up at the local newstand.

As I quickly gleaned the pages, I spied an iintriguing article on disappearing Sea Lions in San Francisco Bay, which I clipped out to refer to for a potential post later in the week on the environment.

The rest of the day's schedule filled up pretty quickly - and the energy expended to keep abreast of it - ended up rustling up a craving for munchies around 7 p.m.

As I scoured Market Street for an inviting diner to slip into, I spied Books Inc, and thought I'd pop in to snatch up the Times (to read over dessert).

For the first time on this visit to Frisco (after searching high & low for the Los Angeles daily) a cashier at the back desk finally informed me that the newspaper did not have a distributor in the tony Bay area.

So, I was SOL.

With a sigh, I started to turn away, when I noticed a gaggle of fold-up chairs uniformly placed around a small podium in the center of the backroom.

Just as that image caught my eye, I suddenly realized that customers were strolling in and taking seats, for what appeared to be an in-house literary event.

The cute staffer informed me that writer Mark Abramson - who penned the popular "Beach Series" tome - Russian River Rat - would be reading a few paragraphs from his latest (as yet unpublished)  offering.

Unfortunately, I was not familiar with the author or his celebrated book on the Russian River hot-spot.

In fact, I'm probably the only the single male to have never trekked up to the popular resort for a week-end of camp.

I've heard all the - gossip, rumors, and innuendo - though.

All true, I gather from trustworthy sources (oh, yeah!).

As it turns out, that morning the Chronicle mentioned the event - but for some inexplicable reason - I didn't stumble across it (just the report on Sea Lions).

How ironic!

As the - witty, outgoing, middle-aged author prepared to read excerpts from "Snowball" - he chortled in an aside that the manuscript may have to undergo some judicious edits before the publishing phase, if the Sea Lions continued to vanish from the bay.

Apparently the delightful sea creatures play a major role in uncovering a macabre twist in the plot.

Talk about synchronicity!

At this juncture, soothed by the realization that I was where I was meant to be at that given moment in time, I settled in for a very entertaining night at the bookstore.

The author was blessed with a packed house - in fact - several fans of his reading style were forced to stand (due to a lack of chairs) as he delighted us all with excerpts from - not only the new book - but from old favorites other book-lovers in the cozy nook were familiar with.

Then, there was a special surprise treat.

Mark pointed out that a publisher back east was interested in his "Diaries" which consisted of entries that stretched back a few decades.

So, he was inclined to read a couple of highly-personal notes from those intimate "memoires", fortunately for his enthusiastic fan base in attendance.

Abramson selected a couple of entries from January 7th (1975, I believe) because that was the date of yesterday's book-reading.

It was going to be interesting to learn what was on his mind the same day so many moons ago.

Imagine that!

The musings all focused on his first attempt to join a writer's group (early on in his literary career) and his hand-wringing about this 'n that - what to toss over his muscular bod to attract a trick and which choice poems to select to best represent his style (in that order!) - and so forth and so on.

As to last night's venture into celebrity, well, he was warmly received by the surprisingly down-to-earth cross-section of gay men who casually-strolled in totally devoid of attitude.

On occasion, Mr. Abramson's interaction with the rapt audience was highly personal in nature.

For example, he chatted a bit about the A.I.D.S. crisis when it hit the Castro like a ton of bricks, and touched on the havoc it caused initially.

Some of the unforgettable experiences inspired his writing, naturally.

For example, he introduced one character - in his cast of many - who became affectionately known as the "bug chaser".

At one point in the early days of the outbreak, older gay men in the throes of various stages of the disease, commanded a remarkable outpouring of love from a compassionate community anxious to reach out and provide comfort in the hour of suffering.

In response to that, a curious phenomenon arose in the gay community, which was shocking to some.

A number of young gays (18-24 age-range basically) felt left out - after all, in neighborhoods like the Castro, West Hollywood, and elsewhere - those stricken with the killer virus were taken into the fold at support groups and hands-on treatment centers and were even provided with free prescription drugs for a myriad of ailments and funding to defray housing costs.

Subsequently, these hapless misguided kids actively sought out older gay men afflicted with the disease, to infect them (willingly or not).

Shortly after that strange episode in gay history, the producers and writers at "Queer as Folk", actually incorporated that disturbing manifestation into a major plot line on the highly-popular cable show.

The ratings skyrocketed, of course!

During the course of the readings last night, there were a number of humorous moments, as well.

The unassuming writer (who - like many S.F. dudes - shaves his head) joked about white sheets referred to in one chapter.

A couple of the guests reacted in a knee-jerk Martha Stewart kind-of-way.

"Who buys white sheets," one roared!

In response, Mark - quick on the uptake - chirped up.

"Well, I figure, if ever there was an emergency, you could wave them to attract help."

Of course, this triggered an old memory from my past.

A lover and I were strolling through a park years ago (not telling which one!) when nature's beauty was inclined to romantically sweep us up into each other arms.

So, we thought it might be a touch risque - and a real adrenalin rush - to lay down in the grass and smooch a little in the bright mid-day sun with Mother Nature's bounty serenading us all around.

Right-off-the-bat, we figured we'd better go off the beaten path (so to speak), and far from the madding crowd.

Curiously, when we hiked up towards the peak of one hill, the foliage diminished somewhat - and eventually - consisted of mainly low-lying shrubs.

Oh well, we were far enough away from prying eyes, that we figured we would be able to snuggle-up without any unexpected intrusions on our intimate moment in the park.

Unfortunately, my friend was wearing bright white undershorts.

Wouldn't 'ya know it, just as we were in the midst of our clinch, we suddenly heard the thunderous roar of a whirly-bird.

We jumped up and scanned the skies to determine if it was nearby.

Turns out, it was the Channel 5 News helicopter (normally used to chart the afternoon rush-hour traffic for the news anchors at the station) heading right in our direction.

OMG!

They must have seen the white flash of his skivvies hanging ten from the bushes below and thought someone was crying out for help!

Well, quick as a wink, we were buttoning up and scooting down the slope to high-tail it outta there.

I intended to tell the story to Mr. Abramson after the readings, but he was busy signing books (so I passed).

Hopefully, he'll stumble on this post, and have a good laugh!

For the most part, the event ran like clock-work, though I did have some frustrations when I was video-taping Mark Abramson for this post.

Unfortunately, a gentleman who plunked down in a seat just ahead of me and slightly to the left, spoiled some of the tantalizing footage.

Gosh, he was not unlike some extra on a movie set in Hollywood, who tries to get his mug on camera - and in the process - ends up upstaging the star.

When he noticed the video camera in my hand, for instance, his behaviour got downright bizarre.

At first, he half-turned in his chair, to try to get his profile in the shots!

Then, at one point, he actually bent over - smack dab in the middle of the lens - and took a moment to re-tie his running shoes!

Duh.

Was he there to actually take in the precious moments being offered up (for free) by the author - or - simply there to be ever-mindful that  his bootstraps were properly strung up?

On a couple of occasions, he also made a point of glancing at items on a shelf to our right.

When I looked over to see what was allegedly catching his eye, I was taken aback to see the items mostly consisted of toys (and games) for kids.

Pervert, perhaps?

Gosh, it was just a ploy to get on-camera!

At one point, I was tempted to lean over and point out that his inconsiderate behaviour was ruining shots I intended to post on the Internet to promote the author and his books.

In a nutshell, he was destroying golden opportunities meant for the writer, alright.

But, since I am a bit of a fatalist, I struggled through the sorry scenario without uttering a peep.

So, when you take a gander at the videos provided at the link(s) below, you'll understand why the author is closer to the left frame (and not centered).

I was trying to prevent the nutty fruitcake from weasling  his way into frame!

If  'ya notice a blur or two on the videos -  yup! - that's bits and pieces of his body parts (arm, head, etc.) floating in and out of the frame erratically which caught me off-guard.

Life in Baghdad by the sea, eh?

A Dog's life...quote of the day!

dog_walking_flyer.jpg

In the Castro district at 18th street, City Officials have allotted a picturesque little park where dogs are allowed to run free off-leash and play with abandon.

You don't want to plunk down on the grass here - or else you'll end up with poopy pants - for sure.

As I perched on a quaint wooden park bench and marvelled at a unique perspective on the San Francisco skyline, I occasionally petted a rambunctious canine that trotted by.

As I was about to continue on a leisurely tour of the city, a friendly young lady strode up to say hello, with an adorable pup in tow.

After her trusty pouch slobbered all over my foot, he raced off to sniff other resplendent dogs running wild in the park.

"So many dogs to lick," she sighed quietly.

And, so little time!
