Prince William & Kate Middleton...Hooray for Hollywood! David & Victoria Beckham play hosts!

With a lot of fanfare - and fresh off a well-received tour in Canada - the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are slated to touch down in the Golden State at the end of the week.

The Royal handlers have fessed up that the handsome couple are expected to hunker down at the ultra-chic Beverly Hills Hotel (known to locals as the "Pink Palace") on Sunset Boulevard.

Will the lovebirds select a secluded cottage to feather their nest for the three-day jaunt or spring for a sumptuous suite with a spectacular view of the picturesque upscale climbs of 90210 (and Bel Air beyond in the distance)?

One legendary film director - an eccentric multi-millionaire by the name of Howard Hughes - once kicked off his expensive loafers there and summarily proceeded to order up juicy hamburgers at whim 'til the cows (usually of the pretty starlet variety) came home!

Old violet eyes - Elizabeth Taylor - played with imaginary friends on the prestigious grounds in her youth while her father flogged paintings in the respected gallery he operated on the first floor.

Fans of pop star George Michael - of "Wham" fame - also got busted across the street in the mens bathroom at the well-manicured neighborhood park during an undercover sting.

The delicous scandal shocked the world at the height of his flourishing musical career.

The Polo Lounge is still a popular watering hole for Tinseltown's power-players out to land fame and fortune in the fickle realm of filmdom.

The inside scoop?

David and Victoria Beckham - long-time friends of the well-liked Royals - are expected to trot 'em 'round town to the delight of the chic elite anxious to curry favor with the future King of England!

In recent days, it has been widely reported that Kate Middleton tossed together the fabulous outfits she wowed fans with in Canada - and hence - it was speculated that she can manage on her own when it comes to fashion sensibilties (thank you very much!).

No matter.

Fashionistas - and Royal Watchers, too - are predicting that Victoria may subtly offer up a style tip or two (maybe even gift the pretty newlywed with a designer frock?).

Meanwhile, Polo enthusiasts are excited about attending a match in Santa Monica in which the Prince will participate.

Lovely Kate has been bestowed with the honor of presenting the trophy to the winners.

A highlight of the tour unfolds when Wills & Kate trek off to one of the major film production studios to mix-and-mingle with a posse of celebrated Hollywood creative types.

When John Travolta was asked if he would jump at the chance to stage a publicity still - like the one he was featured in for posterity's sake with Lady Diana years ago - he nodded in the affirmative.

But, is the Duchess a fan of the Saturday Night Fever star?

Hollywood Legends...Marilyn Monroe & Lady Diana items sold at auction! Free public exhibition! Live & Online Auction!

If you're a film buff hankering to snatch up a rare publicity still of a Hollywood screen legend - then a dazzling exhibition on display this week at Julien's Auctions (no relation to moi except I admit he does follow me on Twitter!) - may be your cup of tea!

On the heels of the unveiling - May 7th thru May 8th - collectors will have the opportunity to bid for the precious treasures either in person or online at the auctioneer's web site.

The collection includes one-of-kind photographs of Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Lucille Ball, Gloria Swanson, and Marion Davies.

The exhibit is timely, too, when you consider that Lady Diana memorabilia will be up for grabs in the wake of the much-ballyhooed Royal Wedding of son Willis.

Yes, the Duke of Cambridge, silly!

Select offerings include private correspondence Marlene Dietrich dispatched to her husband - and a collection of  letters, scripts, and clothing - owned by Lucille Ball (the Queen of Comedy).

The auctioneers will bring down the gavel on a stunning necklace worn by Angelina Jolie to the premiere of one of her many  memorable films ("Salt").

Proceeds from the exquisite piece of jewellery will be donated to one of Ms. Jolie's charities known as:

"The Educational Partnership for Children in Conflict"

Gosh, sounds like my crumby childhood!

When do I ge the check, Angelina?

Of course, what would a Hollywood Legends auction be, without a poignant souvenir or two from the estate of Marilyn Monroe?

Two of Lady Diana's chic elegant gowns are also being offered up for sale by a business concern known as the "Wedding Channel".

At press time, it was announced the proceeds will be donated to a charitable organization also.
In addition to the aforementoned glam items, there will also be a smattering of science fiction props from the NBC hit series Heroes and the Cape.

In addition to the Sci-Fi collection, there will be momentos from the blockbuster Hollywood feature -  "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" - costumes worn by the cast of Serenity, and rarely-sold odds-and-ends from the Indiana Jones franchise.

Heh, I want that hat, Harrison!

Norman Rockwell staging photographs are also being sold replete with copyright.

The original vintage stills feature legendary performers Frank Sinatra, Ann-Margret, and Bing Crosby.

Beverly Hills...Louis Vuitton & Ermenegildo Zegna for that special man!

In spite of the torrential rains, the tony elite were out Sunday afternoon on Rodeo Drive in droves, in search of a gift or two for that someone special in their love-life over the Yuletide Season.

I was bowled over by the eclectic mix of elegant menswear ensembles screaming out at me on the racks at Louis Vuitton, for starters.

The latest fall/winter collection features a dazzling array of butter-soft leather jackets - cut high on-the-waist for a stylish zesty look - or lower on the hip for those who prefer a garment to hug the body politic and keep out the winter chill.

In addition to the casual offerings, there were a bevy of finely-tailored suits sculpted in sleek silhouettes, fashioned in either jet black or monochromatic hues popular this season.

The sweaters were elegant, and sported luxurious collars with nifty fashion flourishes, capable of singling out the man-about-town with the pizazz to pull the look off.

Slacks, though lean-and-mean (for the most part) were sparked up with leather inserts at the waist and buckle-down flaps on deep full pockets.

Over-the-top?

Never.

A handful of the Vuitton pull-overs and fabric jackets - just right for out-of-doors treks - were dreamy, too.

Shoes, though elegant, were pricey.

 $645.00!

Meanwhile, across the street at Ermenegildo Zegna, a yellow cashmere sweater - weaved with a delicious V-neck - was heaven to run my fingers over.

The full topcoats in rich fabrics - were so perfectly crafted - that they appeared to be hand-made by the fashion Maestro himself.

As for the tailored suits, well, the finery on display was difficult to match elsewhere in the upscale trendy hood.

A gentleman with a taste for the finer things in life (or a discerning male or female shopping for one) a trek down to David Yurman (on Rodeo) may be a worthwhile one.

There - male bracelets, jazzy cuff-links, and a choice selection of designer watches - will tempt the tightest budget-minded shopper.

What the heck, it's Christmas.

Splurge a little, eh?

Natalie Cole...holds court @ Saks Fifth Avenue book signing! Beverly Hills!

In spite of inclement weather - drizzling rain in LA LA LAND - fans turned out at Saks Fifth Avenue in tony Beverly Hills this afternoon - to get a glimpse of legendary chanteuse Natalie Cole.

The madding crowds weren't disappointed!

In fact, when Ms. Cole first strolls into a room, her magnetic personality just about knocks folks dead-away, alright.

The tall, slender, graceful beauty carries herself with such grace!

Today, Nat King Cole's daughter sported glittery-silver skin-tight pants and matching shoes which caught the light and sent a million little rainbows here and there about the upscale environs of the trendy upscale retail outlet.

Her chic blouse - with design flourishes (a bow tied elegantly at the neck) - also  underscored a taste for fashion that cries out the "feminine touch".

How did Ms. Cole end up alighting at Saks to sign her new book?

"We've had a long association with Natalie," the burly Manager (who was smartly turned-out in a well-tailored black suit with tasteful matching accessories) beamed.

Ms. Cole was in her element, too.

In fact, at one point she was inclined to make a suggestion that a life-size poster be adjusted a tad, to ensure the paparazzi in tow were able to snatch up coveted publicity stills on the sly no problem.

Meanwhile, fans waited patiently in line for the opportunity to meet their heroine, and have her affix a "Joan Henry" in her signature scroll.

The best of the Yuletide season to 'ya, Natalie!

Rodeo Drive...PETA protestors in Santa outfits picket fur retailers!

'Tis the season to be wary, if you're decked out in top-of-the-line designer duds trimmed or fashioned totally in animal fur (endangered species or not).

No Sir, the argument that minks were raised specifically for the fur trade, doen't hold up with die-hard animal activists.

Today, a Merry band of dedicated protestors from PETA - adorned in Santa outfits - paraded across the street from the oh-so-trendy Fendi retail outlet waving acccusing placards and pointing fingers.

Years ago, during an actor's Union strike, I accepted an assignment as a model for Fendi cologne.

But, in today's political and social-savvy climate, it is doubtful I would sign on for the job.

The gang on Rodeo Drive was quite adamant that the use of fur from slaughtered animals was a definite fashion no-no.

They chanted HO HO FAUX and handed out flyers to passers-by with an urgent query emblazoned on its face.

"Do you have skeletons in your closet?"

The informative pamphlets ranted about the ugly truth of the fur industry and included timely quotes from a handful of high-profile celebrities in support of the cause.

"I don't wear any leather or fur or feathers or any animal products," Natalie Portman - currently starrring in "The Black Swan" - boasted.

Pink was quick to criticize the industry outright with no bones about it.

"Sadly, like any other industry that uses animals, the wool trade uses methods so sadistic that it makes you consider clearing your closet of any animal products. There are lots of clothes to buy for a look that kills without killing anything," she quipped.

Eva Mendes inferred that any fashionista who wore fur products lacked intelligence.

"Personally, I think wearing a baby chinchilla says, 'I'm ignorant'," she concluded.

It was difficult to read the literature on the issue, too, so disturbing were the images!

"Animals on animal farms spend their entire lives confined to crowded filthy wire cages."

"Killing methods include suffocation, gassing, electrocution, and poisoning."

"Animals caught in the wild sometimes remain in traps for days before the trappers return to stomp on their chests or beat them to death."

"Most furs come from China, where millions of animals - including cats and dogs - are skinned alive."

Heard enough?

Shortly after I arrived on the scene in chic Beverly Hills, a small crowd gathered, egging the protestors on.

Bless those upstarts for they know what they do in the name of Nature's defenseless creatures.

Amen!

George Michael...divulges info on Men's room bust! Was going to be outed!

Rough Trade?

George Michael was remarkably candid the other evening about his bust for exposing himself in a Men's toilet in Beverly Hills.

"Didn't you have a nice beach house or something where you could take the dudes," one cynical News Reporter snidely quizzed in an interview with the former front man for WHAM!

Some studs are just into raunchy outdoors sex, I guess!

Michael confided that for a while during the stint with the band - before he sauntered out solo - he was hip to the fact from rumors circulating in media circles that he was going to be outed eventually (at a time when forcing gay celebrities out-of-the-closet was more rare than the norm).

In the cable broadcast - an exclusive on "Scandals" of the Stars - the ever--popular crooner noted that getting caught with his di** "hanging out" was probably the best thing that could have happened in the final analysis.

Although, Mr. Michael is a well-adjusted "out" gay man today, the talented musician appears to have a monkey on-his-back for some unknown reason to the press and his fans.

I mean, what's with all those car crashes in the middle of the night, eh?

Uh-huh!

Michael is way ahead of Charlie Sheen in that regard, alright!

Cheesecake Factory...1/2 price off! National Cheesecake day! Reese's Peanut Butter delight!

Cheesecake lovers are gloating (foaming at the mouth?) over their good fortune this morning!

On National Cheesecake day, the Cheesecake Factory is not only serving up  their yummy desserts at half-price off, but also introducing a scrumptuous new zillion-calorie offering:

Reese's Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Cheesecake

The U.S. based company operates 148 dining restaurants under The Cheesecake Factory banner which are scattered about the country in at least thirty-four states at last count (including the District of Columbia).

The factory owners also run thirteen Grand Lux Cafes and the RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen which are fairing well in a business arena that has been somewhat sluggish over the past year or so.
The restaurant chain boasts extensive menus, eye-catching custom interior decors, and oversize portions that appeal to their loyal (and growing) fan base.

Owner and founder - David M. Overton - threw open the doors of the first Cheesecake Factory in tony Beverly Hills in 1978.

And, there has been no looking back, since!

Lindsay Lohan...GUILTY! Star breaks down in Court! 90-days in slammer!

Loss of Innocence Hollywood-style!

A swarm of paparazzi excitedly jockeyed for position in front of a courthouse on a tony Beverly Hills street, a defense attorney committed a boo-boo when she inferred that the Judge may have been responsible for a misunderstanding that may have confused a teary-eyed starlet, and the world held its collective breath as the accused's fate was about to be determined by a no-nonesense Judge.

Uh-huh.

At two in the afternoon, when far-fetched soap operas were spewing  their wild yarns on local and National broadcasts, a real-life drama was unfolding in a court-room packed to the rafters with rapt observers hanging on every word uttered up during the proceedings.

Early on, there was a burp in the legal wranglings, when the court expressed its dismay about the fact one pertinent record - a detailed account of Lindsay Lohan's appearances at mandatory counselling sessions - was not available to peruse under close scrutiny.

For good reason, the Judge moved for a recess to rectify the problem.

I reported on this issue earlier in the day.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/07/lindsay-lohanshuns-process-servers.html

When the proceedings continued a short while later, the court focused on the documents in minute detail.

In fact, an employee of the facility where Lindsay Lohan was enrolled to take the necessary classes to meet the terms of her probation, was called to the witness stand to clarify the issues.

After an exhausting sifting through of records, it was ultimately determined that Ms. Lohan had failed to appear at 7 out of the 27 scheduled classes.

Ms. Lohan's attorney noted that after probation was revoked and a warrant was issued, her client made a good-faith effort thereafter to catch up with her obligations, by attending two or three classes in one week instead of the one stipulated by the court.

At this juncture, Lohan's attorney made a big boo-boo (or under-estimated the Judge's intelligence and insight), when she blatantly inferred that the her Honor may have been responsible for the misunderstanding (if there was one) and the alleged failure to comply.

"In Chambers, I recall you requested one class a week to ensure the obligation was completed by July 15th," the defense lawyer asserted for the record in so many words.

On the contrary!

The Judge proceeded to note for the record that she stipulated once a week because it was her understanding from experts in the field that a subject benefitted best by attending classes regularly once (not two or three times) a week.

Ouch!

Lohan's attorney must have had wax in her ears, or something, because that statement by the Judge failed to register in her little noggin'.

Later, just prior to sentencing, the ditzy attorney reiterated that the Judge imposed the 1 week class schedule to meet a July 15th deadline date set by the court - and that in view of that - her client was not in non-compliance.

Then, the attorney made the wildest comment of all.

"As of this week, Ms. Lohan is in full compliance with her court-ordered obligations.

Not!

At this juncture, just prior to a verdict being read, the court permitted Lindsay Lohan to stand and address the court.

Within minutes after asserting that she thought she was in compliance, and citing  unusual work-schedules to explain away irregularities, the pretty actress's voice filled with uncontrollable emotion - at which point - she broke down and cried.

Personally, I don't think they were crocodile tears.

Unfortantely, for me, the work excuses didn't hold much water.

Daily, defendants lose their apartments and jobs  on the heels of an arrest when they are jailed, put on probation, and so forth or so on.

That comes part 'n parcel with the conviction of a crime.

To expect to "do her time" - and continue normally with her life without interruption  - in view of life's reality regarding the legal system in this country today is a preposterous selfish notion.

At this juncture, the prosecutor launched her closing arguments.

"I appreciate the tears, but the truth is that she has not been in compliance," she started off.

The hefty middle-aged female attorney proceeded to rattle off  the details which didn't leave much doubt that Ms. Lohan was in fact - guilty of the accusations - as alleged.

Things got worse for Lohan when the Judge cited grounds for the ruling to be announced in the next breath or two.

"You lied when questioned about the DUI incident," she began.

For example, you tried to blame two others for the incident, before it was determined that you were actually driver of the vehicle, she added slowly and methodically.

When white powder was spotted on your jeans, you claimed the clothing was  not yours, she continued in earnest.

"However, friends testified that they were your favorite pants."

Liar! Liar! Your pants are on fire!

Gotcha!

Just betcha TMZ has dozens of shots of her in hob-nobbing at society events in those stylish threads, eh?

And, the Judge kept the hits zinging from the bench.

"You said you went to Promises for two weeks and that you were clean and sober. But your urine sample tested positive for cocaine," she noted solemnly for the court record.

Lies. Lies. Lies.

Finally, the sentence came down.

Lindsay was given three 30-day consecutive sentences in jail - in addition to - ninety days in rehab once the stint in the big house has been completed.

The emotionally-distraught starlet was ordered to surrender herself to the court on July 20th.

Just look at it this way, Lindsay, if you ever get called to audition for the part of Francis Farmer - you'll nab the part, no doubt - what with all the extensive experience under your belt 180 days from now.

Good luck, Lindsay.

Will come visit!

Did prior plunging neckline offend the court?

Lindsay Lohan...frenzied media event in Beverly Hills! Judge imposes "tough love"...

There was a definite buzz in the air in the tony climbs of Beverly Hills this morning.

Amidst a circus-like atmosphere, Lindsay Lohan's limousine purred up to the curb at 8:36 a.m. (late again, folks) - but for some inexplicable reason - the "Mean Girls" star remained hidden inside behind smoked glass.

On notice that Lindsay Lohan would be appearing for a court proceeding at half-past the hour - a gang of reporters, paparazzi, and hangers on - turned out in full force to capture a shot of Ms. Lohan running the gauntlet in front of the courthouuse.

One reporter noted that he'd never seen anything like it.

In addition to the press, there was also a posse of Court Officals standing on guard, out front.

Fans turned out early and began to congregate on the bustling street, hoping to get a glimpse of troubled film star..

To cover their butts, a few photographers and news organizations, chose to camp out at a side door in the event Ms. Lohan was ushered in that less-traveled route to avoid a crush.

Actually, the Linday entrance went off without a hitch (at long last).

Attired in an elegant dark suit - and white blouse open at the collar - the mood was definitely somber (almost business-like).

At issue today was Lindsay's failure to appear before the Judge last week and a determination as to whether Ms. Lohan violated her probation.

As I reported mid-week, Ms. Lohan was three classes short of completing her court-ordered Alchohol and Drug Abuse program.

Four days prior to Ms. Lohan's court date to determine the status of her probation - Lindsay elected to jet off to the Cannes Film Festival - despite warnings from friends and business associates that she was cutting it short.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/05/lindsay-lohanbench-warrant-issued.html

The star of the upcoming screen bio on porn star - Linda Lovelace - was  preparing to fly home to the U.S. to make the court hearing when her passport was allegedly stolen.

Some speculated it was a delaying-and-stalling tactic or a ruse to buy more time.

In response, the angry Judge issued an arrest warrant and imposed $100,000.00 bail.

That warrant was lifted once her lawyers posted a bond to secure it ($10,000.00) later in the day.

Today, the media hounds went wild, when she alighted from the high-end vehicle.

The fast-footed newsies scrambled across the lawn to a perch that was blessed with a full view of Ms. Lohan striding through security.

Once inside, and seated, the Judge read the terms and conditions of her release.

Lindsay Lohan would have to agree to random Drug and Alcohol testing, for starters.

Once a week, Lindsay would also be required to appear at a testing facility, to verify she was in compliance with the court's order (No Alcohol).

Having stated the terms and conditions of probation,  the Judge proceeded to probe Lindsay and her lawyer further.

"Do you accept the terms?"

The two locked heads - at which point - the lawyer noted that they would prefer there not be any requirement of a scram device.

"Lindsay has some film work coming up and that stipulation would interfere," she noted in so many words.

Oh, she was sharp alright.

But not as intelligent (and insightful) as the Judge who knew her "stuff".

"Are you formally objecting to the "order" or accepting the terms," the Judge queried in a no-nonesense manner.

The lawyer and Lindsay whispered their thoughts to each other for a moment or two, then agreed to the conditions.

The prosecutor's lawyer was not going to let go on the "passport' issue.

"I'd like to see Ms. Lohan produce copies of airline tickets for the flight scheduled for  May 19th."

Gotcha?

Surprise!

Ms. Lohan offered copies of the documents for the court to review.

At the close of the hearing, the Judge urged Lindsay to appear for all court-ordered tests.

"To the court, a failure to appear, is a dirty test."

A full hearing in July will seek to determine if Ms. Lohan was in Violation of Probatio - and if so - what penalty should be imposed.

And, how was your day?

Candice Bergen...working with Ice Queen on Murphy Brown! Hollywood elite...

Over the years, in the pursuit of an elusive acting career, I have been blessed with the opportunity to perform in a scene or two with a few actors of renown in the show business arena.

One of the most memorable acting stints came out-of-the-blue when I was cast to appear as a Doorman on the night-time ratings-getter Murphy Brown which starrred Candice Bergen.

The hilarious sitcom was written by Diane English.

In the straightforward plotline - on one of the funniest episodes to ever broadcast during the course of the sitcom's run  - Murphy Brown (played to perfection by Ms. Bergen) is thoroughly outraged to be barred from an exclusive club which boasts an all-male membership.

Yup!

No femme fatales allowed inside the hallowed halls, folks!

Until Murphy causes a big stink, that is.

When Candice's nervy character attempts to barge into the tony old-world club - myself and another doorman (gussied up in smart little uniforms and standing at attention at the prestigious entrance) - block Murphy's way and promptly secure the door as she stands stone-faced seething with anger.

Can you imagine what it is like to stare into the face of Ms. Bergen - in character - or not?

The experience is an unforgettable foray into the surreal, I assure you!

For starters, Ms. Begen's face is a remarkably beautiful one to gaze upon.

But, the powerful magnetic persona she exudes is a trifle more overwhelming!

To say the least!

Although I caught wind of scuttlebutt that accused Ms. Bergen was not inclined to acknowledge "the help" (as Hitchcokc might put it), the grand dame of the Hollywood elite must have thrown caution to the wind on this occasion in view of the fact she appeared to be scrutinizing my presence with some curiosity.

Later, however, Ms. Bergen was somewhat aloof on the set.

Not surprising, since a couple of extras who worked regularly in the office scenes, confided to me earlier on that the cast and crew referred to Bergen as the "Ice Queen".

I expect that having being born into privileged Hollywood circles, Ms. Bergen was cautioned early on in life (or instictively knew) not to mix with the tawdry lowly masses.

Bergen is one of the rarefied few that was actually born in Beverly Hills, California.

Her mother, Frances Bergen, was a Powers model.

Her father, Edgar Bergen, was the legendary ventriloquist, comedian, and actor.

As a child, Bergen was allegedly irritated by the fact, that she was often referred to as Charlie McCarthy's little sister.

Charlie McCarthy was the name of her father's hand-operated dummy who delighted the teaming masses for decades (and ultimately brought great fame and fortune to the Bergen clan).

Beneath the veneer of handsome Candice, I surrmise, there is a lonely unhappy woman.

News at 11!

Candice blessed with the stunning looks!

The Sports Club...LA fitness club has great ambience! Deceptive business practices...

One day I flung open the mail box and a slick high-quality brochure dropped into my open hand.

Upon close inspection, I determined that it was an invitation to try out a local gym in Beverly Hills.

On the surface, the offer tucked inside appeared to be quite a generous one.

At first glance, I gathered that the Sports Club (with locations in major cities around the U.S.) was urging me to take advantage of 1 free month at the gym.

Most work-out joints - like Gold's Gym & 24-hour fitness - tend to hand-out 7-day try-outs max.

I suppose I should have been suspicious when I realized later that because the envelope wasn't posted until approximately the 11th of February, I would only have the opportunity to take the club up on their offer for the remainder of the month (17 days).

Was the failure to pop the invite in the mail  'til the middle of the month deliberate or just an oversight?

Next to having a root canal, signing up for a "gym membership" tends to be high on my list of aggravations to avoid, if possible.

The reason is quite simple.

Once you're in the door - even before you have savored a free stint at the facility - high-pressure salesmen(sharks) will pester potential "suckers" until they cave in (or run straight-away to the nearest exit).

Sure enough, that's what went down, when I strode in the door and met up with  a company rep by the name of Ashton.

After taking me on a tour of the luxurious upscale facility, he gestured for me to plunk myself down and discuss the options (there were three to choose from).

Since I have dealt with many car salesmen over the years, I dug my heels in, and let him rattle off his speel.

Once the delivery was over, I noted that I was an adult (who didn't rush into things), and that I would prefer to try out the facility (per the offer) and reflect on whether to join or not.

At this juncture, Ashford informed me that I couldn't have the free month without buying a membership first.

Huh?

With a hand gesture, and a bit of misspeak, he stabbed a finger at one line in the middle of the page of the invitation.

"With an active membership. It says right here," he swiftly noted in a stern authoratative voice.

At this point, I was taken aback to learn that in addition to the month-to-month membership fees, each member was required to pay dues every four weeks as well.

Gosh, you'd think I was purchasing a Condo, for heaven's sake.

Over the past twenty years or so, I have joined a myriad of gyms - and not once - have I  encountered this kind of monthly/dues fee structure.

Later, when I scrutinized the invite up close with my reading glasses firmly affixed to my nose, I also discovered that  "Ashford" misrepresented the disclaimer for the offer which amounted to a deceptive business practice.

Although he asserted the phrase stated "with an active membership" - in truth - it actually read something else entirely different.

"Call the club today to arrange for a membership," it read in much smaller print.

There was no disclosure (contrary to what Ashford said)  that a waiver of the "initiation fee" required that monthly dues (under one of the three plans) be purchased up-front first to receive the "special" offer.

Notwithstanding, who the heck wants to pay an initiation fee AND monthly dues each month?

What a crock!

When I attempted to discreetly bow out, Ashford was unrelenting.

"Okay. I'll let you have one free week to try out the Sports Club."

So, I took him up on it.

Even though his offer was pretty straightforward, he still  tried to screw me out of a day.

For example, when I strode in for the pep talk and to tour the club, it was February 13th.

After he presented me with a temporary membership card, I noticed later in the locker room, that he inserted February 19th as the expiry date.

I thought that 13 and 7 totalled 20.

 Doesn't it?

The first day I checked in tot he Sports Club to take oadvantage of the free pass, the counter person noticed the error right away.

We both shook our heads!

Although it is doubtful I'll join the club for the foregoing reasons - and because it is just too pricey in my estimation - I have to admit that the Sports Club is the finest gym I have run across in the Los Angeles area to date.

The decor was luxurious and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, for starters.

All the equipment was state of the art, kept up, and easy to use.

Also, the club boasts a spacious sundeck, junior Olympic swimming pool, basketball courts, laundry service, and tastefully-decorated locker rooms.

After working out each day, I was inclined to relax in the luxurious steam room, too.

In addition to the work out (weight)  rooms, there was a yoga center and a massage parlour situated in a subdued atmosphere out-of-the-way off the main thoroughfare.

Forget about hauling  a gym bag or a lock or deodorant to the Sports club.

The mensroom has an ample supply of razors, hair gel, body soap (and free towel service).

Select a locker that is available, plunk your clothes inside, then create your own password which releases the lock when you check out.

No tacky locks to fiddle with or coins to pop in.

There is also an entertainment center where guests (on the higher-end pay plan) can watch TV, snack on tasty treats, you name it.

While you're in the club, send out your day's wardrobe for cleaning and pressing, too.

Want to entertain friends for dinner?

Just make a reservation at Oliver's restaurant which fronts on Wilshire Blvd in tony Beverly Hills (in the golden triangle) a hop-and-a-skip away.

Maybe I'll reconsider if I win the lottery or a rich uncle dies!

All Saints' Church...announces new Rector at Beverly Hills house of prayer!

Who knows!
(I may be featured in this choir photo)

The Vestry has announced that the Reverend Canon Stephen Huber (National Cathedral in Washington) has accepted the unanimous call to be the 7th Rector of All Saints' Church in Beverly Hills.

A couple of years ago, I was fortunate to realize a dream to sing in a choir, when I attended service at All Saints'.

During that time frame, Carol Anderson was in service to the Episcopal Church in the role that Huber has stepped into.

The Reverend grew up in a large Catholic family in Ohio and attended Catholic schools from first grade all the way through graduate school at Loyola University in New Orleans.

The dedicated Church-goer spent ten years teaching theology and working in development at private schools before transitioning into inspiring full-time development work as an A.I.D.S. fundraiser for such organizations as the Fenway Community Health Center (Boston) and the Human Rights Campaign Fund in Washington (D.C.).

Huber attended seminary at Yale University and obtained his Master of Divinity (!) in 1998.

For a short duration Steve filled the role of Development & Communications Director at Yale's Berkley Divinity School.

There were many other career developments under the auspices of the fold in the years that followed.

But, it was a post at the Washington National Cathedral (to build a Cathedral Congregation) that was probably the most challenging and rewarding for the Priest.

Using his impressive leadership skills, Huber proceeded to focus on education, pastoral care, stewardship, communications, and hospitality ministries for the congregation which now numbers 700.

Church officials describe Huber as a "spirit-filled" preacher and loving pastor with an open heart and wonderful manner who is  ready to lead All Saints' Church in the work of the Kingdom of God.

In an essay he wrote in respect to his calling, Rev. Huber eloquently wrote:

"I understand my primary vocation as inviting people into a new or deepened relationship with Jesus Christ."

"All Saints' Church is a model to the whole Church of an intellectually coherent expansive Christian faith that is unabashedly grounded in discipleship of Jesus Christ. I find that enormously exciting."

In accepting the post he closed an open letter to the parish by quoting mystic Meister Eckhart:

"If the only prayer you say in your whole life is thank you, that would suffice."

Amen!

Fame...my 19th nervous breakdown! Dark glasses won't do...

Jaded Beverly Hills elite phased by celebrity!

Oh, it is getting a little intense being so recognizable.

On Saturday, I was on my way up Canon Drive to try out a gym, when the oddest thing happened.

It was like a scene out of a movie, actually.

As I approached a handful of outdoor cafes I felt like I was walking a gauntlet.

All eyes of the guests supping at a smattering of outdoor cafes on the tony strip appeared to be on me - and if they weren't - a companion or two would change all that in about two-seconds flat when they whispered under their breath:

"Do you know WHO that is?"

One well-coiffed socialite's jawed dropped just as a fork flew out of her bejewelled hand and clattered onto her lunch plate with such ear-piercing intensity that it silenced everyone within the perimeter for a second or two.

It was kind of like a domino effect!

As I passed a table - a multitude of prying eyes followed me on as I strolled by -  then  the whole phenomenon would start up again at the next table (then the next).

Frankly, in jaded Beverly Hills, I barely expected a glance!

Later, driving down Sunset, I happened to turn and look out the window and ended up eyeball-to-eyeball with a gaggle of tourists in an open tour bus in the next lane half-turned in their seats trying to get a gander up-close and personal.

But, I really felt like a soap star when I was on vacation in San Francisco recently.

Just as I stepped out of Walgreen's, I heard a little to yelp to my left and turned to check out the commotion.

At this juncture - a lady standing on the street with two friends - suddenly threw their hands to her face and gushed in a high-pitched voice.

"Oh my God, it IS him!"

Should I run?

Were they going to tear my humble threads off of my trim bod?

Unfortunately, some encounters are not so light-hearted or zaney.

The folks who just freeze on the spot when they catch sight of me - and stare - frighten me a little
.
The fellow who stood about twenty feet away - and jotted down  information on my license plate as I was filling my gas tank up at Arco - was a little disconcerting to encounter, for instance.

A stalker - out to locate my address - perhaps?

Some people give me a sly smile as they walk by on the street.

Maybe, they're recalling a funny post that made them laugh?

Speaking of posts, as I sit here at Whole Foods on lunch break -  putting finishing touches on this one - a petite young blond in the next chair keeps get closer and closer.

When I turned the laptop a little to the right to prevent her snooping, she chirped:

"Don't worry. I can't read your screen."

If she gets any closer, she'll be perched in my lap!

Right about now, as my privacy shrinks, I am inclined to offer up some advice.

Take a picture, ask for an autograph, whatever.

Then, move on, please!

Don't stand there in the street looking like you've got a piece of poop in your pants.

Or, go slightly off-kilter, as your eyes suddenly glaze over.

At that point, I imagine you're just about ready to pull out an axe  and hack me to death.

On a talk show once, Paul Newman laughed about an bizarre encounter with a man in the men's room at a Hotel.

Apparently, Mr. Newman was standing at the urinal taking a whiz, when a fan next to him  asked for his autograph out-of-the-blue.

The charismatic star with the remarkable blue eyes joked that he toyed with the idea of half-turning and peeing on the guy's leg!

Clerks in grocery stores and at cafes are the worst!

Pretty soon, I am going to have to order online, or starve to death.

Too intense!

Who was it who once said:

"Actors (and public figures) spend a lifetime trying to become famous. When they've acommplished that remarkable feat, they toss on dark sunglasses so people won't know who they are."

The nature of the beast, I guess.

Valentine's Day...Marshall's middle-age baggage bogs film down! Shirley McClaine's face distracts...

Check for a heartbeat!

Valentine's Day boasts a stellar cast of notable actors - mostly in camero roles - who trot across the screen in tailor-made characterizations that suit them to a "T".

Even so, on occasion, it is hard not to be disappointed in some instances.

Ashton Kutcher, for example - while a capable actor (and obvious star of the film) - chooses to take the safe bet here and basically plays himself or an extenion thereof.

Demi's hubbie is cute - and has that irresistible infectious grin (and eyelashes to die for)  - but the puppy dog expressions tend to wear thin  faster than a wink.

Until Kutcher takes on more challenging acting assignments, it is doubtful that Hollywood willever  take him too seriously as an actor.

Basically, the punked creator is all fluff, but  great eye candy to munch on rainy nights when the dance card is empty.

Julia Roberts kind-of sleep-walks through her precious moment or two on-camera here.

Ah, there was so little to do.

From the expression on her face, she appears to be thinking something along these lines.

"OMG!  I can't believe I'm making so much money for doing nothing."

As to Shirley McClaine - for the first time - I witnessed her overacting onscreen (badly).

Just betcha, Garry Marshall (at the helm of this big budget production) gave her free rein for obvious reasons (and to the great detiment of the two of them and the film in general).

I don't mean to be cruel to Shirley, but - the plastic surgery has taken its toll - and hurt her acting career in the process.

Her face is so stretched that Ms. McClaine's expressions have been pared down to about one and a half.

An actor's emotions should bubble up from within, ripple across the expressive face, and reveal the truth.

McClaine has lost that ability due to restraints imposed by the surgeon's knife.

In the future, Shirley should avoid close-ups, altogether.

There are a couple of performances that touch in Valentine's Day, though.

The young boy who plays Julia Robert's son, for instance, is a real attemtion-getter who effortlessly succeeds in tugging at the heart strings when called for (no problem).

What a screen presence.

An actor with masculine appeal (who played a football player) showed a lot of potential, too.

At times, his true ruggedness - depth of voice, word-phrasing, and mannerisms - reminded me of film greats from the past such as William Holden.

If I am not mistaken, he was in a local grocery shopping recently - and although I was not familiar with who he was on that occasion (Eric Dane), I recall doing a double take as I looked up from the computer at the WiFi station.

I said to myself:

"Self, if he's not an actor, he should be."

The man possessed that indefinable something - that special quality or presence - that sets actors apart from one another.

The Valentine's Day plotline is structured around a series of vignettes.

Marshall's lens follows a bevy of characters over the course of one Valentine's day as they encounter a myriad of trials and tribulations.

The way the seasoned director wove the tale (he introduced characters at different points during the fast-paced film and tied them in as the story unfolded onscreen) appealed to my sensibilities.

Life's like that, so why not.

Marshall's style of filmmaking is pretty precise, rich in color, and  widespread over the social strata in appeal.

In fact, I imagine him in the screening room musing aloud.

"Did we forget anyone?"

A couple of stereotypical characters don't gel in the setting, though.

The backdrop - Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, and the Los Angeles West Side - amounted to a great public relations plug for the big orange.

However, because few people in the mainstream of America have attained the carefree affluence he projects as the norm, Valentine's Day ends up being a fairy tale of sorts.

In fact, at times I felt like I was watching a TV sitcom that had been adapted and blown up for the widescreen at the local movie theatre.

Instead of breaking for commerical after a two or three minute segment, Marshall  moved on to a new character scenario instead.

If a filmgoer doesn't have a score card to keep track - or powers of focus and concentration - they  might get entirely confused about "who is who" during the first-quarter of the film (so fast-paced are the intros).

However, when the characters eventually cross paths and merge, their storylines dovetail and end up part-and-parcel (a tidy Valentine's day gift).

Unfortunately, at times, the loose ends he ties up are too pat.

In fact, you don't have to concentrate too long on the sensory overload beyond the footlights, before you spy Marshall's "invisible hand" at work.

Yup!

Formula filmmaking.

In sum, the award-winning director tries too hard to ensure that all the elements are there - in particular, the ingredients for success - he desperately pines for.

In a nutshell, V-Day suffers from too much  middle-aged baggage.

The romantic comedy is a jaundiced view of Marshall's notions about the scheme of things.

In sum, the award-winning director's ideas about - romance, relationships, drama, comedy (what-have-you) - tend to be old hat, predictable, stale.

If I see one more scene in a film - where everyone shows up at an Indian restaurant and ceremoniouly jumps up to belly dance to the strains of an exotic catchy beat at the end - I'll puke.

Don't get me wrong, though.

I am viewing the film with a critical eye.

I'm sure that regular foks in middle America - elsewhere too - will flock to catch the film (and end up strolling out of the theatre when the credits crawl smiling).

The light-hearted bill-of-fare is mushy and sentimental and superficial and - well, you get the idea - eh?

If you're just looking for a way to kill two hours on mindless entertainment for a quick respite from the daily grind, this one's for you.

Curiously, in spite of the fact Marshall's latest celluloid offering is about Valentine's day, it has no heart.

Personally, I left with a sickly sweet aftertaste in the mouth.

Saccharine!

Playing at theatres everywhere near you!

Kathy Bates same old same old!
