Meredith Viera...fesses up to Jay Leno! Morning show not her style!

Meredith Viera (the poor man's Katie Couric who I often confuse her with) fessed up tonight on the Jay Leno show that she is exiting her once-popular morning show because it is not her "style".

Not suited to her talents is more like it.

As I noted in a post earlier today, in respect to an interview she  conducted with Jack Black, Ms. Viera fielded a couple of silly questions she thought were probing, in a bold-faced effort to stir up some controversy for her gab fest on a major network trying to rustle up ratings.

Post:  05/24/2011

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2011/05/jack-blackecstatic-over-kung-fu-panda.html

Judging by nervous demeanour on Jay's talk-show tonight, I expect that Meredith's excuses were not on the up-and-up.

Just maybe, she couldn't cut it.

Or, perhaps her bosses were unhappy with a lacklustre ratings performance in recent months?

I guess Meredith failed to deliver up the golden egg, eh?

"But, I still have the hosting job on Millionaire," she quipped quickly on the uptake.

Same old same old.

Uh-huh!

In spite of the spandex, at least one of her co-workers still remains popular with the American viewing audience, for sure.

So, what fate befalls Ms. Viera now outside of the trivia fluff?

The Wedding Palace...Christine Yoo comedy hilarious! Cross-over market in the cards!

One of the highlights of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival this year was a comedy feature – The Wedding Palace – which resonated with audiences from start to finish.

When the flick – directed by Christine Yoo - first sputtered to life on the wide-screen in the plush environs of the DGA on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, the rapt audience immediately settled in for a madcap night of zany comedy.

In the opening scenes, as the upbeat fast-paced story unfolded on the wide-screen, filmgoers learned that Jason (the lead character) was an advertising executive pining for love.

Aren't we all?

But, the handsome bachelor’s yearning to get hitched to the woman of his dreams is constantly thwarted by overzealous matchmaking parents, bent on pairing their handsome charismatic son with a suitable bride from a good family with a financially secure bakground.

Such is the Asian American tradition!

“You’ll learn to love each other over time,” his parents wisely counseled him about the ways of the world, when he voiced his disapproval over the young lady chosen by his parents to be betrothed to.

When an unsuitable bride sashays into the picture (from his family's point of view) and captures Jason heart, his conniving mother's plots to nix what appears to be an ominous union arising from an ancient curse on the family.

Oh yes, the young Lothario's parents are a superstitious lot!

The delightful love story– sparked with quite a bit of funny dialogue (and hilarious sight gags sprinkled in for good measure) - is vastly entertaining,

And, true to Hollywood filmmaking, ends happily.

But, not before a bumpy turn-of-events threatens to prevent Jason from finding true love.

At an informative Q &  A after the screening, Ms. Yoo noted that the film was a labor of love, and several years in the making.

Yoo is a petite pretty Asian American (refreshingly shy and down-to-earth) who was raised in the heartland of America.

Understandably, the first-time director's project has a lot of appeal for the Asian-American community.
..
However, because comedy is universal - as is the subject of love - filmgoers in the mainstream of American will find this well-crafted flick appealing, too.

“I was striving for a frothy dream-like quality in keeping with the theme,” the stylish beauty (with a bbeautiful flower headdress weaved into her lustrous locks) underscored in so many words when I quizzed her at the DGA about the cinematography which was outstanding.

Yoo achieved that goal in spades.

Although there were a couple of awkward amateurish moments onscreen – delivered up by a couple of hams in the cast – for the post part "The  Wedding Palace" cruised along without a hitch.

Until the young couple - through thick-and-thin - finally gets hitched, of course!

In spite of the fact the comedy is solid bill-of-fare, the director has yet to land a distribution deal.

I expect that technicality will pan out in the near future - at which point - Ms. Yoo's funny flick will be in a theatre near you soon!

Catch it if you can.

Chris Klein...chowing down on American Pie! DUI rehab blues?!

Idle hands are the Devil's playground.

In view of that, just maybe Chris Klein's nod to reprise his role in the successful "American Pie" franchis is a blessing in disguise.

Though his career started out promising, the actor's bid for superstardom fell short when the troubled talent got derailed by a couple of DUI's, which forced him to pine on the sidelines in rehab 'til he sobered up.

Post:  06/16/2010

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/06/chris-kleinpopular-actor-busted-for-dui.html

Klein's break in the business was not only typical - but a bit cliche - in many respects.

A hot-shot director saunters into town to scout a location for his upcoming flick - and ends up discovering an unknown actor strolling down the hall - while attending high schoo.

Before you can say - "overnight success" - Klein is being whisked around Tinsel Town in stretch limos and his acting career is about to skyrocket.

Unfortunately, he gets side-lined because of a thirst for the old demon rum!

Typical Hollywood actor's rags-to-riches story, eh?

But, there was one thing that set Klein apart from his contemporaries.

Unlike his competitive acting buddies - the kid from nowhere - is genuine!

When I attended a screening of a couple of flicks Klein starred in at the New Beverly Cinema last year - where he appeared for an insightful Q & A with a couple of luminaries in the industry (Director Jason Reitman and Jennifer Grey) I was struck by that fact right-off-the-bat.

Mr. Klein was down-to-earth and displayed a keen sense of humor.

Pretty hunky, too.

But, can he handle meatier roles?

Maybe, but for now he appears to be satisfied chowing down on a piece of humble pie!

Break a leg, Chris!

Charlie Sheen...jumps ship to Fox! Jimmy Kimmel good kisser!

Door still open?

Charlie Sheen (winning!) trotted out onto the stage of  a live! talk show last night and planted a big sloppy kiss on Jimmy Kimmel's mouth!

"Moist lips," Charlie grinned, as the audience beneath the footlights roared in approval!

If anyone knows anything about "moist lips", it's certainly the wild & woolly diminutive actor sweeping the Nation with his manic  (pathetic & desperate?) brand of humor!

And, Sheen was not without gifts, either.

Talk about swag!

The drug-addled superstar reached into his grab-bag of goodies and proceeded to plunk down a nifty coffee mug with the lovable image of a fox etched on its face.

Avid fans ecstatically cheered the "tiger blood" one on, also, as he tossed a bevy of t-shirts in their midst with some of his latest slogans (true gems) emblazoned on the front.

"Duh!"

"Winning!"

Though one should never look a gift horse in the mouth, the spontaneous moment begged the question.

Are the rumors true?

Tabloid gossips have been all a-buzz with the scuttlebutt that Sheen has signed on with the Fox network.

Well, the brass over there are no strangers to controversy, so go figure!

Charlie Sheen...Jimmy Fallon's put down of the day!

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tv show photo

Good time, Charlie!

Last night in a regular segment - where Jimmy Fallon writes notes of thanks to various individuals and organizations - actor Charlie Sheen was targeted for the biggest put-down of the day.

Near the top of the show Fallon began to pen a note to thank BJ's for selling out for big bucks.

Then, as he reflected on the matter for a moment or two, the quirky talk-show-host was inclined to quip:

"But, who wants to spend millions on BJ's?"

At this juncture, a publicity still of Charlie Sheen popped up on the TV screen.

Ouch!

You go, girl!

Justin Bieber...top ten list pokes fun at celebrity! Dave Letterman show!

Last night Justin Bieber surprised fans and television viewers alike when he popped up on the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theatre to take a poke at his celebrity status for Dave's ever-popular Top Ten List!

Although the segment is a biit spotty at times - poorly-written now-and-then and often missing the funny bone by a country mile - the Bieber material was pretty high calibre!

A couple of my fave jabs?

*It’s good to be a pop star without having to audition for American Idol's Steven Tyler.

*Cross me and I’ll have 50,000 screaming girls come to your house to mess you up.

*When I’m sick my doctor makes hilarious jokes about Bieber fever.

*The chance to visit The Late Show and my idol Paul Schaffer.
(Canucks always stick together, 'ya know?)

*At the Barber shop, I can say, “Give me the me.”
(Is that kind of like jerking off?)

*If I tweet  “I just sneezed” a billion people will tweet “gesundheit.”

You betcha, kid!

Don't want some nasty cold putting a damper on your next stage performance!

By the way, the "Bieb's" delivery wasn't half-bad.

The diction was pretty good, in fact!

The pop star showed potential in the comic-timing department, too.

Are romantic features on the horizon?

Later!

Roseanne Barr...exits Facebook It's all about me!

A dishy - silver-haired Roseanne Barr - has been turning up at book-signing gigs to affix her familiar "Joan Henry" to a spanking bullsh** tome on sale on bookshelves this week at top retailers around the country.

The mature look - some say a tad reminiscent of the one Diane Keaton sports like a comfortable old sensible shoe - suits the grand old dame of stand-up and sitcom comedy to a "t".

For the most part, Ms. Barr appears to be at peace with herself and the world.

Not with Facebook, however!

The racy comedienne - undisputed Queen of the snappy comeback - found the high-profile social hub a frustrating annoying experience.

"I thought I would join Facebook to keep my fans updated. But, the members on the site are only keen on chatting about themselves. They don't want to hear about me or what I have to say," she laughed cynically i so many words to a TV host during the course of an off-the-wall interview yesterday.

'Ya don't say!

Wasn't the much-ballyhooed tattooed lady hip to that fact (long before she logged on to become a member of the self-serving site) that the concept of  "Me, Myself, and I" reigns supreme?

The founders didn''t come up with the name - Facebook - for no good reason.

Indeed!

A web sight that focuses on "face" values is a losing proposition for intelligent sentient beings seeking like-minded souls (even a meaningful dialogue) in the overall scheme of things.

Mensa is more up your alley, Roseanne!

See 'ya at their next meeting, eh?

Tracey Ullman Show...Santa Baby memories!

Gosh, that catchy tune - Santa Baby - has been turning up on radio stations, over the air in shopping malls, and even at a handful of the local retailers I patronized bright and early this morning,

Of course, the little ditty has fond memories for moi!

Years ago, when I was cast to play the part of a Postal worker on the comedy hit - the Tracey Ullman Show - the scene I was acting in featured the zany comedienne dancing a strip tease to that song with a sexy Santa!

What a hoot!

One of my fondest show-biz memories.

Tracey, whever you are, Happy Holidays!

Glee...favorite quote on Britney Spears episode!

On the much-ballyhooed episode of "Glee" this week - featuring the Pop Diva Britney Spears - there were quite a few one-line zingers that cracked me up!

My favorite?

After spying a school buddy kibitzing with a fellow female student, one of the characters lamented:

"How come gay guys get all the good-looking girls?"

Because they're light in the loafers, do 'ya think?

Charlie Sheen...clandestine rendezvous with Escort! Pay-per-play best option...

Thought it was a good disguise at the time!

The tabloid magazine shows have been keeping close tabs on frisky Charlie Sheen.

New developments in his - um - personal life have raised a specter of doubt about his sincerity when it comes to relationships after all.

Is he hell-bent on accomplishing something worthwhile in rehab or is that all for show?

One high profile news outlet broadcast incriminating shots of Charlie sneaking out of a love nest which raised more than a few eyebrows after an in-depth investigation.

The diminuitive actor was sporting a hat (pulled down over his face) casual non-descript jacket, and sneakers when he was caught under the glare of the searing spotlight.

But, get  this, a tacky moustache - bushy as hell - was glued to his upper lip.

Sleuths assert that the fake whiskers were actually a prop used on a segment of his popular TV Comedy - "Two and a Half Men"  - a few weeks ago.

When Charlie's character waltzes in with the ubiquitous moustache plastered to his face, on the episode in question, a young male  urges him to remove it.

“You look like a 70’s porn star.”

Maybe that was the image he was shooting for in view of the company he was keeping.

His strange bedfellow is allegedly a high-priced escort who charges upwards of $3,000.00 an hour.

Nice work if you can get it.

Her luscious lips must work wonders.

Or, maybe Charlie - after a couple of failed marriages - has figured it's a lot cheaper (and more headache free) to just order out.

Party favors, extra!

Conan O'Brien...CoCo lands talk-fest at TBS! November kick-off...

Bad Hair days over for Conan!

Once Conan O’Brien wraps up his 3-month tour around the country - which kicks of this week - the quirky comic won’t have much time to throw up his feet and take a breather.

News out of the O’Brien camp - after all - is that the former NBC late night talk-show host will set up shop at TBS.

Looks like Conan slipped through Fox’s trembling fingers.

Although George Lopez has been rustling up respectable numbers in the 11 p.m. slot, the cable network execs were inclined to bump him into the witching hour.

Lopez will hit the airwaves at the stroke of midnight.

An immigrant to the talk-show circuit, Lopez didn't appear to mind stepping aside for a full-fledged citizen, as of press time.

I expect the snub will be a bit of fodder for stand-up comics over the next few days.

Congrats, CoCo!

Just airbrush out NBC logo, Conan!

Ellen DeGeneres...shameless promotion! Chelsea Lately gets a**y-face with dog...

Ellen turning into a woofer!

Will success spoil Rock Hunter - or - Ellen DeGeneres for that matter?

Usually, when I tune in to the perky talk-show host's afternoon show, Ellen is all sweetness and light.

And, the content - an hour or so of entertaining fluff - pretty harmless for the most part.

So, I was taken aback when the "aw-shucks" down-to-earth stand-up comic made a tasteless commercial pitch to guest Chelsea Lately.

Chelsea, who hosts a show featuring her own personal brand of humor on E Entertainment, was sharing an amusing tale about a dog she adopted (that otherwise would have been put to sleep) had she not stepped forward to provide shelter.

"I didn't have a dog for the same reasons I didn't have babies. I don't like feeding 'em or cleaning up after 'em, " she lamented with a look of smug satisfaction on her pretty face.

But, the experience of owning a pet warmed her heart a tad.

For instance, in spite of the fact she imagined she'd never be the kind of individual to allow an oversized dog into her comfy bed at night, Chelsea confessed the little charmer won her over.

In about two seconds flat the pouch was hopping up onto the bed snuggling up.

"But, it wasn't what I expected. I thought he'd curl up and put his hang-dog face next to mine," she giggled in so many words.

Fat chance!

After he did a little helicopter whirl around the bed once or twice, he flopped down, and thrust his a** right in her face!

The ultimate compliment, Chelsea!

Can 'ya hear me snickering?

Now, excuse me, while I throw up at the thought.

But, what really irked me yesterday, was the tasteless promotional plug that followed.

"Chelsea, I have some gifts for you," Ellen teased.

From a hiding-place nearby, the comic scooped up a dog collar and presented it to a surprised Chelsea.

"I have something else for you, too," the out-host excitedly piped up.

At this juncture, Ellen made a pitch for a product she sponsors.

"You know, Chelsea, I have a line of pet food. So, I put together a gift basket."

When a gofer strode out with a pretty basket chock full of dog food (and pet treats) Chelsea was speechless understandably.

Embarrassed for Ellen, perhaps?

It was such a shameless promotion, after all.

As Chelsea sat stone-faced for a second, Ellen made a pitch to the audience.

"It has a lot of nutritional value and the brand is good for your dog," she chirped with all the charm of a snake-oil salesman.

Don't they pay her enough at the Network?

Ellen, don't lower yourself, please!

Candice Bergen...working with Ice Queen on Murphy Brown! Hollywood elite...

Over the years, in the pursuit of an elusive acting career, I have been blessed with the opportunity to perform in a scene or two with a few actors of renown in the show business arena.

One of the most memorable acting stints came out-of-the-blue when I was cast to appear as a Doorman on the night-time ratings-getter Murphy Brown which starrred Candice Bergen.

The hilarious sitcom was written by Diane English.

In the straightforward plotline - on one of the funniest episodes to ever broadcast during the course of the sitcom's run  - Murphy Brown (played to perfection by Ms. Bergen) is thoroughly outraged to be barred from an exclusive club which boasts an all-male membership.

Yup!

No femme fatales allowed inside the hallowed halls, folks!

Until Murphy causes a big stink, that is.

When Candice's nervy character attempts to barge into the tony old-world club - myself and another doorman (gussied up in smart little uniforms and standing at attention at the prestigious entrance) - block Murphy's way and promptly secure the door as she stands stone-faced seething with anger.

Can you imagine what it is like to stare into the face of Ms. Bergen - in character - or not?

The experience is an unforgettable foray into the surreal, I assure you!

For starters, Ms. Begen's face is a remarkably beautiful one to gaze upon.

But, the powerful magnetic persona she exudes is a trifle more overwhelming!

To say the least!

Although I caught wind of scuttlebutt that accused Ms. Bergen was not inclined to acknowledge "the help" (as Hitchcokc might put it), the grand dame of the Hollywood elite must have thrown caution to the wind on this occasion in view of the fact she appeared to be scrutinizing my presence with some curiosity.

Later, however, Ms. Bergen was somewhat aloof on the set.

Not surprising, since a couple of extras who worked regularly in the office scenes, confided to me earlier on that the cast and crew referred to Bergen as the "Ice Queen".

I expect that having being born into privileged Hollywood circles, Ms. Bergen was cautioned early on in life (or instictively knew) not to mix with the tawdry lowly masses.

Bergen is one of the rarefied few that was actually born in Beverly Hills, California.

Her mother, Frances Bergen, was a Powers model.

Her father, Edgar Bergen, was the legendary ventriloquist, comedian, and actor.

As a child, Bergen was allegedly irritated by the fact, that she was often referred to as Charlie McCarthy's little sister.

Charlie McCarthy was the name of her father's hand-operated dummy who delighted the teaming masses for decades (and ultimately brought great fame and fortune to the Bergen clan).

Beneath the veneer of handsome Candice, I surrmise, there is a lonely unhappy woman.

News at 11!

Candice blessed with the stunning looks!

Conan O'Brien...CoCo's 30-city tour! Kicks off in Eugene...

NBC monkey on CoCo's back!

Conan O'Brien - fresh off a tustle with NBC over the Jay Leno time-slot fiasco - will be packing up his kit 'n Kaboodle and heading out on a National Tour.

The thirty-city trail-blazer will include much-anticipated comedy stage performances live at Radio City Music Hall on June 1st & June 2nd.

With tongue firmly in cheek - and a devil-may-care attitude - the fun-lovin' stand-up comic has titled his sojourn into the wilds of the heartland as:

"The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour"

The phrase was coined with NBC's contractual agreement first & foremost in the funnyman's fuzzy little brain.

For example, when O'Brien settled his differences with the peacock network, he agreed not to perform on the old boob tube until after September 1st.

Obviously, the binding NBCdirective  would give Jay Leno ample opportunity to regain his stature (and top ratings) in the late-night talk-show circuit, without interference from the red-haired one affectionately known as CoCo to loyal fans.

O'Brien is promising a show that will offer up a night of music, comedy, hugging (as they say at Facebook, I like!), and the occasional awkward silence (in lethal doses, no doubt).

The tour will kick off in a humble (but celebrated) venue in Eugene, Oregon.

Obviously, there is no bad blood between Conan and his former employers, when you consider that the King of off-beat repartee, will saunter into Universal Studios on April 24th & April 25th for local gigs sure to sell out (psst! NBC owns Universal).

American Express scooped up sponsorship duties without blinking an eye.

The tickets are reasonably-priced at $39.50 at the economical end.

Jay & Conan carve out territory!

Judy Holliday..."Born Yesterday" mirrors communist issue! Bright star a legendary talent...

One of the good things about movie revival houses - especially if you are twenty-or-thirty-something -is that  they provide the opportunity for classic film buffs to catch flicks from the thirites, forties, and fifties on the wide screen instead of a cable network on the old boob tube.

In that regard, local theatres like the Aero, the Nuart - and especially the New Beverly Cinema - satisfy the bill to the max.

Last night, I caught Judy Holliday in a double-feature (both in black & white) which consisted of two of her most popular (successful films) "Born Yesterday" and "It Should Happen to You".

If you read this column regularly, you know that I am inclined to use the phrase "I wasn't born yesterday" alot when I am particularly annoyed with some bozo trying to pull a fast one over on me!

Of course, the Holliday film is where the expression was coined.

Holliday honed her stage skills in a night-club act before working in Broadway plays and musicals.

Her success playing the role of  "Billie Dawn" (in a stage production in 1946) led to her being cast in the film version (1950) for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award:

Best Actress
Motion Picture Musical or Comedy

The fast-paced witty comedy also starred William Holden (a revelation in this role) and Broderick Crawford.

Garson Kanin originally wrote the play for friend Jean Arthur.

Shortly after the out-of-town engagements, Ms. Arthur became ill and was unable to take on the run in New York City; subsequently, Holliday stepped into her shoes in a role that sky-rocketted her to great success in theatrical circles.

Curiously, the subject matter may have hit home a little too close for Ms. Holliday in some respects.

The plot focuses on a gangster her character is romantically-involved with  who saunters into Washington to grease a few palms to force a bill amendment in his favor for an ongoing commercial venture.

Ms. Holliday's character tends to harp about the evils of big business and the perils of self-serving capitalism to the detriment of the "people".

In an intriguing twist, the charismatic star was called to testify before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee to answer claims that she was involved in communism.

The "dizzy blond" was a highly intelligent talent, but lawyers advised her to play dumb (along the lines of some of the characters she portrayed on the silver screen) to save her pretty skin.

In her defense, she argued that she had been taken advatange of.

Although not blacklisted from films, Holliday was barred from performing on the radio and television for almost three years.

In the second feature that screened last night, Ms. Holliday played oppositie a young fresh-faced actor - Jack Lemmon - who was a total delight in every facet of his bang-on characterization.

George Cukor's directing - a handful of his camera shots showed-off stunning examples of his unique flair and individualistic style, for instance - was simply remarkable.

Judy was also hailed for her performance on Broadway in the musical - "Bells Are Ringing" - and won a Tony Award:

Best Actress
Best Performance/ Leading Actress in a Musical

The hit show inspired a screen version she also starred in (1960).

In this hilarious feature, the screwball comedienne played a telephone operator, inclined to get mixed up in the personal and professional lives of her clients.

"Bells are Ringing" is one of my favorite comedies - because it rustles up fond memories of  two friends of mine - who once owned a telephone answering service (with the old "plug in" board) in Hollywood proper (which I penned a post on about a year ago).

Post:  02/01/08

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2008/02/raquel-welchhas-heavy-breather.html

Holliday began her show business career in 1938 as part of a night-club act called "The Revuers."

The popular Revuers landed gigs at New York hot spots such as the Blue Angel, the Rainbow Room, and the Trocadero (Hollywood).

Bernard Dick summed up Holliday's acting this way:

"Perhaps the most important aspect of the Judy Holliday persona, both in variations of Billie Dawn and in her roles as housewife, is her vulnerablity. Her ability to shift her mood quickly from comic to serious is one of her greatest technical gifts."

George Cukor lauded her, too.

"She had in common with the great depth of emotion, that unexpectedly touching emotion, that thing which would unexpectedly touch your heart."

Ms. Holliday was once-involved with the talented clarinet-player - David Oppenheim - whom she married in 1948 (Divorced 1958).

The loquacious character actress also maintained a long-term relationship with jazz musician Gerry Mulligan.

Ms. Holliday was interred in the Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson in New York in 1965.

Holliday has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame  in Hollywood @  6901 Hollywood Blvd.

American Idol...Ellen criticized by morning Disc Jockeys! Lighten upl...

As I was flipping the dial on the car radio this morning, I stumbled across a couple of jocks panning Ellen DeGeneres in respect to her new stint as a judge on American Idol.

The main thrust of their potshots?

"She's a comedian. That's what we expect to get from her," one chided in so many words.

"Ellen's taking it all too seriously," another piped in.

In the final analysis, the morning plattter-spinners concluded that because there already were a couple of  qualified judges (from a musical standpoint) on the panel, that the perky talk-show host (who pines to do a two-step now and then on her own show) should stick to what she does best.

But, the truth of the matter is, it is not always possible to zip off zingers non-stop that touch the funny bone.

Or, conjure of a bit of schtick that's going to hit the mark on each and every breathless occasion.

For example, last week the wide-eyed comedian attempted to rustle up a gaggle of giggles, by toying with one of the contestants in the throes of uttering up her decision.

"I know I shouldn't make you wait for my decision," she confessed with a straight face.

Silence.

"So, I'm just going to get to it."

Silence.

"Because, that would be unfair, of course. To make your wait."

Although that wasn't it verbatim, you get the gist.

The bit was so old, it was grey.

And, in spite of the fact Ellen usually has expert comic timing - on this occasion - it fell flat.

When Ellen first agreed to take on the post, the press roundly reported her stance on what it meant for her to be a judge on American Idol.

If  I recall correctly, Ms. DeGeneres admitted she was not an expert on the subject of music - and that her opinions on talent and stage presence - would stem from the fact she was a typical person who was a music lover pulling for the contestants from the sidelines.

Auditions are tough, after all.

I expect that having a major player on the panel - who is less foreboding a prospect than Simon Cowell (who tends to glare down his snotty nose at contestants) - is helpful in getting an audition off on the right note!

In that regard, Ellen's a worthwhile contribution to the mix.

Maybe she just needs to strike a better balance with her material.

It's all a matter of gaining her stride, I guess.

Give the kid a break, eh, Dudes?
