American Idol...ratings down with 18-49 age demographic! Fox nonplussed!

Jennifer Lopez unable to lure viewers!

The critics must be howling today.

Or, rubbing their hands with glee, quipping righteously:

"I told 'ya so!"

In spite of a full-blown promo for the season opener - Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Ryan Seacrest appeared on Jay Leno's Late Night talk show this past week to smooze about the upcoming season's dynamic bill-of-fare, for instance - the ratings were a no-show in many respects.

On the heels of the exit of the Bitchy Brit - Simon Cowell - "American Idol" (TV's No. 1 show) finally got a kick in the teeth from their once-loyal fan base in an all-important demographic around the country.

Uh-huh!

According to the Nielsen Company, Wednesday's viewers tapped out at a mere 26.1 million viewers.

The numbers reflect a downward spiral of thirteen percent for the Karoke-style contest which faired well right up until its near death knell when the Fox prime-time winner suffered a bit of a shake-up in personnel and morale on the airwaves and in the trashy tabloids at the supermarket check-out stand. last year.

But, even still, Fox is not one to cry the blues.

With a stiff upper lip, top brass at the alternative Network asserted this morning (to save face?) that the loss in numbers was in line with projections.

At least one performer is smiling.

Paula Abdul, how was your day?

HAIR...memories of Gerome Ragni & rock musical! Revival @ Pantages Theatre!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

Chances are - you are keen to the fact that the above lyrics are from the hit song (Aquarius) penned for the Rock Musical "Hair" which was written by a good friend of mine - Gerome Ragni (and his sidekick James Rado).

I originally met "Jerry" in an odd way!

In the sixties, I was a street performer (known as "The Dancer"), who garnered a lot of public attention in the downtown streets of Toronto, during that heady era.

In fact, on one occasion on Baldwin Street, I was arrested for dancing on a police car during a scuffle that ensued during a rally (which was launched in a bold-faced effort to convert the tiny thoroughfare into a marketplace "sans" motor vehicles along the lines of the Farmer's Markets springing up around the Nation today).

Morley Markson - a filmmaker who was travelling around North America shooting footage on the sixties hippie movement - happened to be in attendance that day with his crew in tow and captured the whole episode on film.

Subsequently, the hilarious scene ended up being broadcast on the National News (CBC) in Canada with a Beatles's tune blaring in the background!

Later, Mr. Markson included the footage in his documentary - "Breathing Together"  - which was also known as the "Revolution of the Electric Family" - which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1972.

Of course - clips of Abbie Hoffman, John Lennon, and Buckminster Fuller - didn't hurt when it came to drumming up interest in his delightful take on that outrageous unique era.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the horizon, Mr. Ragni - the innovative writer/composer of the Broadway sell-out show - was in Toronto in preparation for the launch of a HAIR production at the Alexandria Theatre.

One day I was dancing on Bloor Street in downtown "Cow" town, when Mr. Ragni happened to be cruising by in a taxi.

As soon as he spied me outside of the passenger window of the cab, he bolted out the side-door, and dashed up to me on the street.

"You've got to be in Hair," he exclaimed excitedly.

Due to my highly-original dance routines and ubiquitous bohemian presence (coupled with scraggly curly locks similar to those featured on the album cover) it was pretty much a given to folks in Toronto that I was a perfect fit for the production of "HAIR"

Unfortunately, after I danced up-a-storm and warbled a heart-felt spirited tune at my audition, the producers arrived at their own conclusions.

"He's stoned," they lamented.

Next!

Understandably, a reporter - sitting in on the auditions - was quick to pose a question in the aftermath.

"What were you on?"

"The stage," I quipped without blinking-an-eye!

 Ba-dump!

Although I didn't end up on stage in the Toronto production of HAIR in a role, I was invited to the opening night celebrations, nonetheless.

Old photographs at the Toronto Star (Weekend Magazine) bare witness to the fact that I was center stage - and dancing alongside the cast (with Ragni) - when the final explosive scene rang down the curtain that night.

Needless to say, Jerry and I became good friends.

In fact, we were casual lovers - too - on the sly.

Jerry was married after all, and had a young son.

To further complicate matters, I was underage (17).

The last time I was in the company of Jerry, it was a bizarre experience, too.

I was tripping around West Hollywood one day when I ran smack dab into Jerry near Duke's Restaurant (which used to be at the Tropicana Hotel on Santa Monica Blvd before it moved up to Sunset Blvd on the busy strip).

Jerry invited me up to his Hotel room (at the Sunset Marquis) for a light snack and coffee, but - wouldn't 'ya know it - our chance encounter ended up turning into a roll in-the-hay.

Just as we finished up doing the nasty (a phrase we used in those days), the front desk clerk called up from the lobby of the Hotel, with a message which struck like a bolt of lightning.

Treat Williams was downstairs and on his way up.

OMG!

Jerry was in a panic because he instinctively knew that Treat would figure things out at the drop of-a-hat once he spied us together in his suite.

So, Jerry urged me to hide in the closet (!) until the two of them took off for an engagement across town (which had allegedly slipped his mind).

"Just let yourself out when we're gone," Jerry laughed.

And, that was the last time I saw his cheerful mug.

Gerome Ragni passed away in the 1980's but left a legacy of song!

"Hair" wasn't a hit at first, though.

According to Jerry, the musical languished off-off Broadway for weeks without much recognition or fanfare.

"It wasn't until we put in the nude scene," joked Jerry,"that we rustled up all the attention. At which point, the show took off."

"Hair" is slated for a revival at the Pantages Theatre next month from January 5th thru 11th.

If you have the opportunity, catch it if you can!

It's still a wonderful musical that is uplifting, spirited, and chock full of exuberance.

The Hoff...David Hasselhoff's reality shake-up!

In the first episode of David Hasselhoff's reality TV show, the troubled actor underscored that life was not a bed of roses at 57 years of age.

In a playful moment of truth, he also admitted that he was broke and starting over.

"I spent my money on personal things," he shrugged.

Hence, the reason for launching the reality-show - a potential cash cow - expected to calm the troubled waters.

In some respects, reality shows of this ilk (that toss the glare of the spotlight on the innermost thoughts, hopes and demons of a fading Lothario) are a last gasp effort to regain a foothold (but ultimately end up being a form of prostitution at its worst level).

In sum, the scenario is not unlike one where the desperate sell their soul to the devil (or the highest bidder).

Notwithstanding, Hasselhoff swears he'll never become the German "Elvis".

That, in spite of the fact the former soap hunk (Y & R) still has a loyal following in Europe.

In fact, he's a timeless sex symbol over there, in spite of humiliating Hoff sightings on YouTube in recent months that have been demoralizing and none-too-flattering.

Sadly, Hoff's kids have been dragged on-board to his discredit.

In sum, they are the spoiled offspring of the petty bourgeoise.

Once the amusing odd-ball bill-of-fare cranks up, it's obvious that Mr. Hasselhoff is in hot water because of a lack of priorities (common sense and intelligence, too).

For example, he cries the blues about his financial dilemma, one moment - then, without batting-an-eye - fails to put his foot down when a charlatan arrives at the house to use her "psychic" gifts to analyze the family dog for big bucks.

Hoff and his kiddies are the ones who need their heads examined, if you really want to get real about it.

Worse than that?

During the course of the show - when Hasselhoff is inclined to philosophize now-and-then about life and its potential downfalls, it's paintfully obvious that "The Hoff" is simply a case of the blind leading the bland.

In sum, "Hoff" is an overblown piece of self-indulgent fluff.

No wonder terrorists want to snuff out North American culture!

Bristol Palin...dethroned on ABC TV's Dancing with Stars! Jennifer Grey snags prize!

Amid a sea of controversy - Bristol Palin slipped off her ruby red slippers and skulked away into the good night from whence she came - on Tuesday eve.

Her last hurrah?

In spite of the bold-faced deceitful efforts of a posse of Republican Tea Party upstarts to catapult Sarah Palin's daughter into the winning slot on "Dancing with the Stars" - pretty Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and Derek Hough (handsome professional dance cutie) - prevailed and snatched up the glittering disco ball!

The feat was not accomplished without a lot of sweat and tears, though.

In fact, in the final hours of the heady competition, Grey threw a disc in her spine after dancing her little heart out to a captive live! audience.

In recent weeks - fans of the hit show bit their nails nervously as they cursed the TV screen in disgust (one dude shot his screen out) - at what was shamelessly going down on the popular entertainment show.

Although more talented "dazzling" contestants scored high with the show's competent (professional) judges - for some inexplicable reason - the Alaskan tart (Palin) continued to score big-time with her sloppy dips and awkward two-steps with viewers around the country and at home.

By the time Levi's ex shot into the top slot, critics began to cry foul!

Were Sarah Palin's Republican Tea Party supporters in the political arena stuffing the ballot box at the ABC web site online???

At this juncture, a furor erupted in the blogosphere, and eleswhere!

Once the word was out, the viewing public fought back fervently to "right the wrong".

On Tuesday night, for example, a multitude of fans - anxious to vote for the best dancers (Grey & Hough) - overwhelmed the site with legitimate nods.

And, in the aftermath - after the ballots were tabulated - the deserving talented twosome were named top dogs on "Dancing with the Stars".

That just goes to show 'ya.

Hell hath no fury like an American viewing audience scorned!

Talk about a reality check, Sarah.

Later?

You betcha!

Sherlock Holmes...Robert Downey's sleuth fan of kick-boxing! Elementary, dear Watson...

For many, Christmas will not be all about Turkey, stuffing, and presents under the tree.

The laid-back holiday will afford film buffs the opportunity to saunter off to the local Theatre and catch the release of "Sherlock Holmes" starring respected actor Robert Downey, Jr.

By now, unless they've been living in Siberia, most film enthusiastics are keenly aware that quirky director Guy Ritchie (Madonna's ex) has tried his hand at updating the character of the master sleuth and his once-stuffy sidekick Dr.Watson.

Over the years, a handful of actors have stepped into the role.

Basil Rathbone managed to not only carve out a niche for himself with his characterization - but in the process - conjure up an image of the celebrated Detective that has been long-remembered over the years.

And, a screen persona difficult to shake, until now perhaps.

With Robert Downey, Jr. taking on the task in the latest studio-backed production, Sherlock Holmes may be literally transformed into Detective Cool right before our eyes, for starters.

According to press notices, in-house previews, and snippets of reviews - the new Sherlock is a buffed young man - sure to make hearts go pit-a-patter.

Even once-stodgy Dr. Watson has been overhauled.

With Jude Law breathing life into the character from beneath his skin, Watson has been upgraded from a supporting role, to a force to reckon with in a leading capacity opposite Downey.

When I was driving through Beverly Hills this morning, film critic Kenneth Turan's review of  "Sherlock Holmes" popped up on a local radio station as I was flipping the dial.

According to Turan, a lot of bickering between the two long-time friends, ends up being a bit tedious.

Further, Turan accused the producers of exploiting intense action scenes to the point where they ended  up being  "generic" - thus - rendering the big-budget release into little more than a lot of Hollywood fluff (geared towards generating ticket sales across the demographic, no doubt).

The advertising campaign has been nothing short of a "blitz";  in fact, just today, the morning papers were awash with screaming ads on just about every page in the Calendar section drawing attention to a host of openings at theatres near you and just about everyone else  in the Western Hemisphere.

And, the critics have been raving.

Mark S. Allen at CBS-TV used an eye-catching alliteratiion to get his review across:

"Smart, Sexy, Sensational"

One word say it all for Karen Durbin @ Elle:

"Dazzling"

Although I rarely ever agree with Peter Travers at Rolling Stone (he's so full of himself) I surmise that his assessement of Downey is bang on when he raves:

"Downey is irresistible"

And, Jake Hamilton at Fox TV, is already touting Sherlock Holmes as best film of the year.

Tomorrow, after take it in (this is one film I felt I should screen alongside the movie-going public in an emotionally-charged theatre setting), I'll be tossing in my own two cents worth.

I expect I'll be gushing about both Downey and Law, but underscoring - perhaps - that rank commercialism undermined the true potential of Sherlock Holmes from the get-go.

But, I'm hoping that is not the case.

Though I suspect Guy Ritchie's offering has missed its mark - in large part due to the rumor mill - I'll go into the theatre without bias or preconceived notions - and of course - pray for the best!

Like any regular joe, I always pine for a movie-going experience that is top notch and manages to entertain without flaw.

Elementary, dear Watson!

Transylmania...blood-sucking vampires sweep into theatres today! Give it the old college try...

I was blessed with an invite (from the Dark Lord, no doubt)  to catch Transylmania at a private screening the other night.

Alas, due to a scheduling conflict, it was a toss up between "T" Vampire horror or "Young Victoria" romance and high drama in jolly Old England across the big pond (circa 1800's).

Sentimental gushing fool that I am - a Canuck loyal to the Royals (when I was a mere lad of about eleven years of age I actually waved to the Queen (E II) & Prince Phillip when the staid couple cruised by in their elegant Rolls Royce in the downtown streets of Toronto a few decades ago) - I opted for the visually-stunning period piece.

But, Transylmania has just opened in theatres around the country today, so I expect I'll slip into the horror-genre bill-of-fare one day soon to wallow in all the gorey mayhem.

In a nutshell, Transylmania is about a motley group of college students who embark on the wildest, sexiest, most outrageous semester abroad ever at Razvan University.

Located deep in the heart of the “cursed land” of Transylmania in a centuries-old castle, Razvan isn’t your typical institution of higher learning.

Indeed!

Leather-clad professors in chic black, a three-foot tall Dean, classes in crucifix weddings, and topless vampiresses lurking in shadowy corners are sure to titillate even the most sensible hard-nosed browners on campus (and elswhere).

See 'ya there!

Classic Vampire film!

Young Victoria ...Duchess of York & writer Julian Fellowes wow rapt filmgoers @ screening! Exquisite 4 star screen bio captivates...

A buzz circulated around the theatre on the heels of a rumor - that the Duchess of York was slated to attend the Q & A - once the credits rolled at the end of the screening of  "Young Victoria".

A few naysayers were adamant that it certainly could not be so!

"I didn't see any security," one snotty bottle-blond huffed in a seat behind me.

"I don't think so."

Party pooper!

After all, I had it on good authority (the usher confirmed it!) that the flaming red-haired freckled-beauty, was expected to trot out to bask in the glow a tad.

But, for those unfamiliar with the production notes, the notion was obviously an absurd one.

Truth of the matter is - Sarah Ferguson  (formerly the Duchess of Pork - um - York) - hatched the idea for the big-screen biopic which focuses solely on the early days of Queen Victoria's reign (and her subsequent proposal of marriage to handsome cousin Albert from across the English Channel).

"We're all familiar with the image of the elderly Victoria in her black mourning clothes," Fergie (dare I refer to the former Royal so casually in passing?) noted somewhat poignantly to the rapt filmgoers hanging on every succinct (effervescent) word.

One day - as Ferguson was hunkered down in the very quarters at Buckingham Palace where Victoria wiled away many an hour away from her subjects - it hit her like a bolt of lightning.

A film about Victoria's youth might just change the dreary grey image forevermore.

So - a treatment was lovingly pieced together as a sort-of tribute to the celebrated Monarch - who still holds the prestigious honor of being the longest-reigning Queen in England's history.

Eventually, the project ended up in the lap of Julian Fellowes, which ended up being an auspicious turning-point for the mother of two skirting the outer fringes of Tinseltown in a breathy-search for backers.

When an interviewer from the LA TIMES (on behalf of the "Envelope" series currently in full swing) probed a bit about the integrity of the material, Ms. Ferguson didn't hesitate to point a finger at one producer who intended to sensationalize the material (to the Royal Family's detriment).

"He was going to shoot a scene of Victoria in bed with one of the Lords," she lamented, to all within earshot.

That's show biz, ducky!

Altough the germ of the idea sprang from Ferguson's own creative vision - and painstaking research on the Queen Victoria (and the Royals in general)  - she downplayed her role in a humorous fashion last night.

"I was just a chick in the henhouse," she giggled, as her earthy-side (which often got her knickers caught in a twist with the Queen Mom) surfaced a smidgen out-of-control and reared its gutsy head.

There was an awkward silence for a sec - at which point - it dawned on Ferguson that perhaps she misspoke.

"Well, maybe a wolf in the henhouse."

Indeed, the sometimes-author of children's books, had no qualms admitting it was tenacity - and bit of the old spit-and-shove - that got the production into high gear eventually.

In fact, the Queen's cast-off daughter-in-law (black sheep of the family, dudes!)  was such a formidable public relations spokesperson for the project that it tended to force hands.

For example, when Ferguson was invited to attend the screeing of  DEPARTED, a soon as Julian Fellowes spied her strident approach in his direction, he stopped her dead in her tracks from afar.

"Yes, Fergie. We're going to shoot that picture," he hollered across the crowded causeway.

The sets and costumes are lush - exquisite - in fact; surprising, when you consider that there were budget constraints.

"How did you land those locations," the interviewer quizzed the Duchess excitedly.

"Did you have to ask the Queen for permission?"

"Well, yes. Usually, that is required," she chided tongue-in-cheek.

"When I got divorced from the Queen's handsomest son, I did the right thing and remained friends. After all, I really admire her (Elizabeth II).  Also, she is the grandmother of my children," she noted in so many words.

Almost in an aside, the spunky spirited dish, noted (somewhat reluctantly) that several of the fabulous castles and country estates the production team facilitated for the shoot were owned personally by a handful of her friends.

As the Divine Diva - Bettle Midler - would warble:

"You've got to have friends."

On that note, it should be pointed out that Fergie remains friends with her ex-husband (Prince Andrew).

As to "Young Victoria", well, I was so entralled (and caught up in every mesmerizing moment) that I lost track of all time in the plush theatre environs last evening.

In fact, when it was apparent the film was winding down, I was taken aback.

Indignant!

What - it's over - so soon?

For many, this will be one of those rare screen adventures,  filmgoers would prefer to never end.

The acting, for starters, was simply superb.

And, all the elements sure to guarantee a blockbuster success, were up there on the silver screen, too: witty, fast-paced dialogue, touches of high drama interspered with side-splitting humorous interludes, gorgeous sweeping vistas of turn-of-the century England, a fascinating storyline filled with wonder and intrigue, and - above all - and a delicious love story sure to break out the soft kleenex and bon bons from the get-go.

4 Stars!

Congrats, Duchie.

Britney Spears...circus hits Vegas! Concerts September 26th thru 27th @ Mandalay Bay...

Circus bimbo babe returns to Big top!

Britney Spears and the final act of her Circus Tour splash down at Mandalay Bay this weekend much to the delight of die-hard fans!

Many are viewing the concert dates as a "comeback tour" for the once-troubled pop icon.

According to the Sun (London/U.K.):

"It is an all action, eye-melting pop spectacle which even leaves the crowd out of breath."

MTV.com - a tad critical (and stingy with rave reviews) on occasion - noted that Britney's "Circus" extravaganza was not only a sightr to behold, but the biggest show under one roof.

As for Pop Teen's  fashion get-up?

Ho-Hum!

Notwithstanding, I expect the lusty lass will play to sold-out houses.

See 'ya there!

Wayne Newton...return resident engagement in Vegas! Fans overjoyed...

Happier Days @ the Flamingo!

The scuttlebutt around the strip at the crack of dawn?

Wayne Newton has agreed to sign on as a resident "long-term" stage performer at the Tropicana Hotel.

According to the rumors, along with a spanking-new contract, there will be a Wayne Newton "make-over" in the wings, too.

Gosh, I recall the days when Wayne appeared all fresh-faced (and innocent) on the Ed Sullivan show - softly blushing and gloriously belting out - Danke Schoen - with precise distinctive phrasing.

So, what's next?

Expect a "theatrical extravaganza", according to his handlers and insiders at the glitzy Tropicana.

Critics like Mike Weatherford, at the Las Vegas Review Journal, read beteen the notes and hazard a guess that this is a sure sign that Mr. Newton's pipes have bitten the proverbial dust.

Do rust & diamonds sell?

Phantom of the Opera...Vegas 5-day festival! Hal Prince to attend...

"Phans" will be descending on the Vegas strip tonight as a 5-day tribute to the long-running hit musical - "Phantom of the Opera" - kicks off!

The thrilling celebration includes a Masquerade Ball at the Venetian at St. Mark's Square.

According to die-hard stage-musical-lovers, a "phan" is one who has attended the "Phantom" dozens - maybe hundreds - of times and is totally obssessed with all the scintillating dramatic details of the ill-fated love story.

During the course of the five-day theatrical adventure - every morning and afternoon of each day, in fact - participants will indulge in myriad aspects of the musical - from the artistry of the makeup,  to one-on-one meetings with the cast, and actual tours of the theatre and "chandelier".

At the close of every magical day, there will be a performance of  "Phantom of the Opera", too.

Honorary guest - Hal Prince (director/Producer) - will address fans at the opening ceremonies, too.

Sounds phantastic, doesn't it?

Las Vegas...David Spade live! comedy show @ Venetian! September 18th...

Fans of David Slade are sure to be treated to a weekend of raucous wit when the in-your-face funnyman unveils his live! comedy show at the Venetian in Las Vegas end of the week.

September 18th thru September 20th.

David Spade was born in Birmingham Michigan (1964) and raised in Scottsdale & Casa Grande (Arizona) respectively.

The sometimes-troubled (drug-related issues) star was first spotted by a casting agent at "The Improv" in Los Angeles many moons ago.

On the heels of this auspicious moment, the Hollywood hopeful was signed to camp it up in the the 4th feature in the "Police Academy" franchise "Citizens on Partrol" (1987).

From there, the quirky performer sping-boarded to the big time when he became a regular cast member on the highly-rated (classic comedy skit-hit) "Saturday Night Live".

Undoubtedly, though, it was a handful of smarty-pants characters in a variety of sketches in the second season (in particular the portrayal of a highly disinterested airline steward who bids each passenger adieu with a very sardonic "buh-bye") that launched his career into the stratosphere.

There was no looking back for David after that!

Spade is also well-known for his right-on impersonations of noteworthy luminaries in the biz such as actor Michael J. Fox, and musicians Kurt Cobain and Tom Petty during his tenure.

Feature film pairings with the likes of Chris Farley in "Tommy Boy" turned out memorable performances, too.

Spade's ubiquitious talents have been touted by the industry as well.

He earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of off-beat skirt-chasing secretary by the name of "Dennis Finch" on "Just Shoot Me!" (1997).

Catch the gig in Vegas, eh?

Las Vegas...Donny & Marie celebrate 1 year on Vegas strip! Gifts for guests...

When Donny &  Marie appeared on stage this week to celebrate their one-year anniversay, the winsome twosome were in such high spirits that they decided to share the wealth a tad.

For example, every guest in the audience who snapped up a ticket that night to attend the upbeat cutesy show, was treated to delicious Godiva designer chocolates.

When I was a teen growing up in the burbs of  Toronto, I used to catch their weekly Variety Show on the old boob tube.

Donny was the mischievous Osmond - a typical heart-throb - who savored a posse of gushing fans who hung on every (aw-shucks) gushing word and bat-of-a fluttering eyelash.

Marie, on the other hand, played the "straight man" -and wisely - allowed her brother to be the foil.

When it was recently announced that Donny was slated to appear on Fox's highly-rated musical hit - "So, You think you can Dance" -  the perky performer was quick to note that her brother was a worthy contestant.

"Donny works up such a sweat on stage," she giggled to one interviewer.

Was Marie hinting that a little "B.O" may be wafting about the stage in his wake and on the heels of getting down 'n dirty on stage?

Ellen DeGeneres...American Idol signs pact with perky comic! Sly dogs...

Ellen Show no swang song!

Sly dogs, alright!

Of course, I am referring to the producers at "American Idol".

On the (tottering) heels of Abdul's controversial departure (boo hoo) from the popular highly-rated nightime entertainment show, the suits at Fox gave the impression that they were content to play a game of "musical chairs" in respect to the fourth Judge on the "American Idol" panel.

The stardust barely settled, for example, when the execs at the scrappy network announced that Posh Spice (for starters) would sit in for a round of talent-scouting come the new season (with other high-profile celebs to follow suit).

In retrospect, it now appears that it was all alot of smoke-and-mirrors.

Especially -  when you consider that the Fox brass not only courted Ellen DeGeneres in a clandestine fashion behind-the-scenes since July - but signed a pact with the gutsy gay activist for a five-year gig!

Although Ellen loves to dance (a lesiure-time activity shock-jock Howard Stern tends to poke fun at) she has no background in music.

The effervescent talk-show host doesn't find that a stumbling block at all, though.

"Hopefully, I'm the people's point of view," she gushed to her adoring fans during a taping of the show yesterday, when she first announced the stunning surprise news.

"I sit at home and watch it. I'm not going to look at it in a critical way. I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to the person."

Actually, a guest appearance on - "So, you think you can dance" - triggred the courtship.

In fact, when the powers-that-be realized in that Abdul was not going to be an easy "lock-in" for the upcoming season (without a hefty hike in pay from the old cash-cow)  they began to eye Ellen for the hot seat.

Then, a whirlwind of  negotiatons commenced with power-brokers at ICM.

When the news filtered backed to Warner Brothers (producer and distrubutor of the Ellen Show) they were also inclined to spring into action to protect their own best interests.

Lucky Ellen managed to nab a lucative three-year extention with the studio big-wigs.

Smart cookie!

As Shakespear once said:

"I've never seen such a young body with such an old head."

As to judging talent, well, obviously DeGeneres will be a contestant's dream.

Instead of critizing from a technical musical standpoint, she'll be pulling for the one tugging at her heart strings.

As to Simon? Inquiring mind want to know - will they snuggle up close - or scratch each other's eyes out.

Meow!

Leonardo DiCaprio...appears @ Tao incognito in Las Vegas! Business or pleasure...

Jaws dropped at Tao the other evening when a somewhat elusive Leonardo DiCaprio allegedly slipped into the trendy hang-out.

The gossip mongers tongues began to wag, too.

In town for a clandestine love tryst?

Or, just maybe, the sexy screen idol was checking out locales for an upcoming movie shoot, a posse of excited guests speculated on the down-low out-of-earshot.

Las Vegas...Phantom tickets @ $109.00! Carrot Top $72.00! Nathan Burton (& Buffet) $19.99!

Depending on your budget (and eclectic taste) there are a handful of entertaining acts to take in right now on the Vegas strip.

"Carrot Top" - the once-wimpy dude with the shock of bright red hair who used to juggle power-saws when he first broke into show biz - is snapping up seventy-two bucks a shot for his show.

On the other end of the spectrum, Nathan Burton offers up a mesmerizing Magic Show (rife with a bevy of mystifying illusions that baffle even the most observant ticket-holder) for the bargain price of $19.99 (a buffet included).

I met Mr. Burton once on the red carpet at the Cinevegas film festival.

Cool down-to-earth guy!

Phantom of the Opera is going strong at the Venetian @ $109.00 a pop!

"An over-the-top spectacle," according to a stage critic at the Arizona Republic.

The Chicago-Sun Times raved, too.

"It will take your breath away."

As I strolled down Paradise just yesterday, I was surprised to spy a bilboard touting Charo's "concert" at the Riviera.

After I trundled on home from school as a lad, I often caught the effervescent "coochie coochie" girl reving up giggling audiences on the Merv Griffin show.

The Las Vegas Sun astutely quipped about Charo:

"A stick of dyamite exploding on stage."

Most Americans are unaware of the fact that the little spitfire is a skilled guitarist.

"A musical sensation" according to some.

Catch her act if you can!
The ever-popular "Blue Man Group" continues to pack the tourists in, but is a much pricier offering, with tickets selling for $129.00 (& skwywards!).

The dazzling stage show has been highly-touted as  "visually stunning", "wildly inventive", and "hysterically funny."

"An ecstatic experience," raved USA Today.

Chippendales (for the lusty at heart) is raunchy bill-of-fare for a hefty price tag of $58.00. (The Rio)

Ladies (and you gay dudes) take note!

In the event of unexpected up-close and -in-your-face lap dances, it may be wise to have a fistful of bills on hand to tuck into bulging g-strings.

Across town, Hooters is trying to steal some of the Chippendale's thunder with their own sexy male stud tease, known as the "Men of X".

In view of the newly-packed Beatles tunes this past week, a slew of die-hard Liverpudlian fans may want to take in the always-popular FAB Four at Planet Hollywood ($57.50).

"Legends" consists of 5 Fabulous acts in one spectucular stage extravaganza at Harrah's.

The longest running tribute show in entertainment history, Legends in concert features dancers, live musicians, and the world's greatest celebrity impersonators.

"The Show of Shows," according to the International Press Association.

"Grand. It's a cosmic curtain call of Legends," lauded another media outlet.

"American Superstars" at the Stratosphere is in a similar vein and offers one stage performance a night Sunday thru Tuesday.

There are wo shows nighty from Wed/Sat @  6:30 p.m & 8:30 p.m. respectively.

$49.50 will land you a show, dinner, and Tower (Stratosphere panoramic view of Vegas strip) , and two cocktails.  Good deal, eh?

"Bodies" is an macabre exhibition at the Luxor.

Critics are hailing the novel display as "innovative, real, and groundbreaking".

It is a showcase of real human bodies that have been preserved to allow the curious to explore the human body in a fascinating way never seen before.

If you can stomach it!

The "Titantic Exhibition" of memorabilia at the Luxor may appeal to a handful of history buffs, too.  And, the entrance fee of $27.00 won't bankrupt your Vegas budget.

The perennial favourite - "The Lion King" - is still wowing stage musical fans at the princely sum of $109.00 a ticket at Mandaulay Bay.

Of course, a little sunbathing at the pool may be the best route to go if the sweltering heat persists in the desert oasis (!!!) .

All that it will cost you is the price of a cocktail or two!

Enjoy!

Wayne Newton...quietly negotiating with Tropicana for performance dates! Cost of cigars may figure in...

A few months ago, I reported on a special appearance by mega-star - Wayne Newton - when he returned to the Las Vegas stage to packed houses and was cheered on enthusiastically by adoring fans.

The rumor around the strip this week is that Newton started-up talks with the Tropicana about a possible upcoming longer-term engagement - but, for some inexplicable reason - the negotiations fell through.

Could it have been the root of all evil - the almighty buck - that stalled a potentially lucrative deal for the Casino?

The cost of cigars, stabling thoroughbred horses - and even hair gel - has sky-rocketed since Newton last appeared under contract on stage.

Will be bite the big one if the price is right?

Werner Herzog...to sign "Conquest" offering @ Book Soup! Saturday August 1st...

If you ever catch wind of a Q & A session slated to be paired with a screening of a film by respected director - Werner Herzog - jump at the golden opportunity to rub shoulders - and interact, if possible - with the visionary filmmaker.

A few months ago, die-hard fans (myself included) were treated to a delightful evening of off-the-cuff musings on the making of a recent project starring quirky Nicholas Cage (Bad Lieutenant) - for example - at the ever-popular New Beverly Cinema (West Hollywood).

After his documentary - "Encounters at the end of the World" - screened to a wildly enthusiastic audience that memorable night, the intelligent articulate auteur was inclined to offer up a handful of filmmaking tips to aspiring young directors, too.

The generous outgoing Herzog is slated to appear at Book Soup (8818 W. Sunset Blvd) on Saturday August 1st (@ 5 p.m.) to sign his heartfelt (no doubt greatly amusing) recollections of his topsy-turvy (at times hand-wrenching) filmmaking experience on the set of the landmark project "Fitzcarraldo".

Titled - "Conquest of the Useless Recollections From the Making of "Fitzcarraldo" - the entertaining page-turner puts the spotlight on - among other things - Herzog's forced (unpleasant?) creative partnership with volatile actor Klaus Kinski (who replaced Jason Robards last-minute when an illness felled the award-winning actor unexpectedly) during the course of the troublesome shoot.

Known primarily as an Academy award-winning Film Director(German) associated with the renowned German New Wave "movement", Hertzog's celluloid musings generally tend to focus an insightful (often searing) lens on the impassionated psyche of his subjects - adventurers, heroes, hapless stalwarts fighting against the odds - you name it.

In respect to the "Fitzcarraldo" controversy - and Herzog's unique ubiquitous cinematic style that daily impacts the cult classic scene - Wikipedia astutely noted in their biography on the respected director as follows:

"Herzog's films have received considerable critical acclaim and achieved popularity on the art house circuit. They have also been the subject of controversy in regard to their themes and messages, especially the circumstances surrounding their creation. A notable example is Fitzcarraldo,in which the obsessiveness of the central character was mirrored by the director during the making of the film, as shown in Burden of Dreams, a documentary filmed during the making of Fitzcarraldo. His treatment of subjects has been characterized as Wagnerian in its scope, as Fitzcarraldo and his later film Invincible (2001) are directly inspired by opera, or operatic themes."

"He is proud of never using storyboards and often improvising large parts of the script, as he explains on the commentary track to Aguirre, The Wrath of God."

A charming storyteller - and an equally warm, outgoing and engaging human being - the evening at Book Soup (no doubt) promises to be a glowing tribute to his craft and a stand-out must-see event worth attending.

See 'ya there, duckies!

Paris Hilton (Premiere Video)...production staff shoo away gate-crashers & lookie-loos!

As celebrated guests strolled down the red carpet at the dazzling premiere of Paris Hilton's documentary - Paris, not France, these hapless production staffers were charged with the ultra-important task of keeping out the gate-crashers & the lookie-loos.

Who, moi?

When Paris made her entrance, there was no doubt, who was the star though!

The young Heiress sparkled in a silk designer dress with tasteful understated accessories which underscored her sense of style and keen fashion sense!

Fans & paparazzi went wild, needless to say!

HD Video captured by Julian Ayrs at the Tattler.

Michael Jackson...tickets! Gone, Gone, Gone...

If you're as antsy as me, you probably checked your e-mail box non-stop yesterday, to determine if you'd been blessed with a couple of coveted tickets for Michael Jackson's Memorial Service downtown Tuesday (July 7th) at the Staples Center.

Fortunately, Ryan Seacrest zipped off a tweet and I was warned in advance that the organizers for the much-anticipated Jackson service, were not going to contact ticket recipients until Monday, July 6th (today).

So, I slipped out the door at dusk last night and hit the nightclub circuit to catch the tail-end of the 4th of July festivities.

This morning, when I plucked up the Los Angeles Times to give it a quick peruse, I suddenly spied a newspaper article which noted briefly that a handful of winners were informed by e-mail communication at about 5:45 pm yesterday afternoon of the outcome of their entries in the draw .

One thrilled couple back East were jubilant that their names were selected by the high-tech computer that must-have whizzed through the entries like lightning and quicker than you can say google!

At first, they were highly-suspicious, according to the reporter.

"They thought they were being scammed."

But, under close-scrutiny, they determined they pulled off the invite of the decade!

Heh, these folks deserve the privilege.

Imagine that, the dedicated fans are laying out cold hard cash to book flights, and fly in from out-of-town to attend the Memorial Service.

later, when I first logged on to the Internet - and opened up Yahoo - I didn't spy one peep from the Jackson folks.
Boo Hoo!

But, when I was scrolling down the in-box a couple of minutes later - an e-mail communication from staples.com - caught my eye.

I clicked on the link not knowing what to expect.

Darn, it was a polite message informing me that the computer ticket-picker, passed me by.

Here it is verbatim:

Thank you for your registration.

Sorry, we regret to inform you that your registration to attend the Public Memorial Service for Michael Jackson was not selected.

Hundreds of thousands registered, but only a few can be in attendance.

S

THANK YOU
Even still, I think the event-planners exhibited a lot of class!

I mean, instead of leaving a host of wistful hopefuls twisting in the wind - they were truly thoughtful enough to inform us first-hand - before the lucky few started boasting near and far.

Hats off to Staples, the Jackson's, and the whole slew of handlers organizing the event.

Cool, dudes!

Ironically, a curious news item published nearby in the same edition of the Los Angeles Times, caught my attention - and likewise - signalled that Jackson organizers may have to put up with uninvited guests, nonetheless.

According to the management at Staples, Barnum & Bailey is set to ring up the curtain on their 5-day Circus extravaganza at the stadium day-after tomorrow.

Get this!

Just shy of the hour the Jackson entourage, invited guests, and fans are scheduled to descend on the staples center to pay their last respects, a herd of Elephants is slated to parade down the causeway, too!

Although the organizers were trying to avoid a zoo-like atmosphere at the Memorial Service - ironically, as fate would have - a 3 ring Circus will head up the funeral procession!

Getting hit with a bit of bird sh** may be lucky, but a paddie of Elephant dung, I wonder?

In view of Michael's love for animals, all I can offer up in closing is, what a way to go!
