Jackie Evancho...wacko mentally-imbalanced fans worse than Grobanites!

A couple of weeks ago, I penned a review of a PBS Special - which featured a young songbird by the name of Jackie Evancho - who placed second in a karaoke-style talent show on the old boob tube last season.

http://ijulianblogspot.com/2011/06/jackie-evanchopbs-special-lacked.html

Although I did rave about her range, I was inclined to point out that as a stage performer the little "angel" left a lot to be desired (in a nutshell).

With maturity, and proper coaching, I expect the young chanteuse will reach her true potential one day.

On the heels of the critique, her fans were livid!

Judging by a few of the responses, anyway, which were quite hateful (and irrational).

If you thought the "Grobanites" were wacko over Josh Groban - well - the Jackie-O's take the whole "fan worship" thing to a bizarre level of lunacy.

Notwithstanding, not one irate reader was capable of intelligently articulating their rage in any meaningful or constructive way, in the wake of the critique.

When her fans attempted to post comments "anonymously" at the Tattler, the deceitful behaviour spoke volumes to moi!

Cowards!

By the way - Happy 4th of July - eh?

American Idol...Scotty McCreery avoids blogs! Steve Tyler wowed fans!

In the aftermath of his astounding big win last night, Scotty McCreery found himself trotted around the show-biz-circuit today.

Ah, the toast of LA LA LAND!

The country-western star wannabee was everywhere! everywhere! everywhere!

But, don't expect Scotty to cruise the Internet soon, or check out what any bloggers have to say about his appearances on American Idol.

The kid with a twang in his voice has sworn off the blogosphere for his own reasons.

"On the Internet, they love you or they hate you," he solemnly quipped to one interviewer this morning, with a bit of a bad taste in his mouth.

So, he's putting his blinders on, and focusing on the kudos and crush of loving die-hard fans!

Meanwhile, last night's closing segment of American Idol generated a big buzz on major sites - and local news programs - bright-and-early this morning.

Some quipped that nobody but God could hit that high note that Steve Tyler managed to pull off - with little aplomb - to the stunned amazement of everyone in attendance and tuning in from the comfort of their homes.

Just how tight did his pants have to be to accomplish that feat, I wonder?

One anchor on Fox News in Vegas joked that when Jennifer Lopez was gracing the stage with her "ass" shimmy - that the foundations of the sound stage must have been rocking back-and-forth.

Just betcha that little maneuver - which she had obviously been practicing at home in front of a mirror - kept the pounds from taking their toll on her best ass-et in recent weeks.

Jennifer put slutty pole-dancers to shame!

Shake that booty, honey!

Lady GaGa was a knock-out when she - not only rocked on the stage - but engaged in sensual hanky-panky with a sexy young stud.

When they took the splash, well, it was symbolic - wasn't it?

Meanwhile, I can't fathom all the interest in what's-her-name, that came second.

She sure looks chunky to moi!

In spite of a smattering of juicy kisses planted on Scott McCreery'x face last night, the winsome twosome swear that they have no inclination to jump in-between-the-sheets.

Seems that Scotty has his mom on his mind a lot, so you figure it out!

Needless to say, the final episode was a smash success from a ratings point out view.

Uh-huh.

Viewer turn-out went through the roof.

Now, as the kids go out on tour, the producers gear up for season 11 (!) which starts up in about-a-month.

Break a leg, kids!

THE X FACTOR...Virtual auditions! Simon Cowell scours for Talent!

If you're a performer, who was unable to attend open call auditions for  - X FACTOR - Simon Cowell is reaching out "virtually".

For example, X FACTOR  producers have whipped up a handful of state-of-the art audition booths, that will be installed at shopping malls in out-of-the-way communities, to facilitate auditions for a posse of singers chomping-at-the-bit to be "discovered".

At stake?

A $5 million-dollar recording contract!

"We're extending auditions to six more cities," beamed the host of the upcoming entertainment show - styled after American Idol - on Fox TV.

Potential contestants who reside in neighborhoods around the country near - Anchorage, Denver, Honolulu, Kansas City, Phoenix, and  Nashville - just lucked out!

"America has the best talent in the world and we're looking for the best of the best. We believe the next global superstar is out there waiting to be discovered," a spokesperson at Fox beamed.

"We think MyStudio is a brilliant way to audition for those people who haven't been able to make it to the open calls," Cowell underscored at a press conference in recent days.

Throughout April - anyone 12 years of age or older (solo artists  & vocal groups) - can use the nifty booths to record their auditions.

The X Factor...Simon Cowell auditions in Newark, Seattle & Dallas! Catch a rising star!

Cowell's virile hairy factor!

In a recent e-mail, Simon Cowell - the former American Idol Judge - posed a pointed question.

Do you - or a friend or a family member - have what it takes to become a global superstar?

Uh-huh!

The feisty Brit - known for his caustic wit - is out to rustle up a bevy of unknown singing sensations to showcase on his upcoming variety entertainment show.

The X Factor!

Cowell is launching the project - a version of which is fairing well in the ratings on the boob tube in jolly old England - in the fall on Fox TV.

X Factor - which Cowell describes as a "make-it-or-break-it" vocal competition - is different than the current fodder proliferating on the airwaves (such as American Idol and Dancing with the Stars) because there are no restrictions.

Solo singers, vocal groups - and anyone over the age of 12 - have the chance to win a $5 million recording deal with Sony Music.

You got it!

There's no "upper age" limit!

Performers - who are under the impression that they have what it takes to make it big in show-biz - are encouraged to audition for the Judges.

Although try-outs have already commenced in a couple of major cities around the country, there are three open calls in April (one in May) that performers may attend in Newark, Seattle, Chicago, and Dallas.

Now is your chance!

Who knows, you may just walk away with a $5 million recording contract, eh?

American Idol...ratings down with 18-49 age demographic! Fox nonplussed!

Jennifer Lopez unable to lure viewers!

The critics must be howling today.

Or, rubbing their hands with glee, quipping righteously:

"I told 'ya so!"

In spite of a full-blown promo for the season opener - Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Ryan Seacrest appeared on Jay Leno's Late Night talk show this past week to smooze about the upcoming season's dynamic bill-of-fare, for instance - the ratings were a no-show in many respects.

On the heels of the exit of the Bitchy Brit - Simon Cowell - "American Idol" (TV's No. 1 show) finally got a kick in the teeth from their once-loyal fan base in an all-important demographic around the country.

Uh-huh!

According to the Nielsen Company, Wednesday's viewers tapped out at a mere 26.1 million viewers.

The numbers reflect a downward spiral of thirteen percent for the Karoke-style contest which faired well right up until its near death knell when the Fox prime-time winner suffered a bit of a shake-up in personnel and morale on the airwaves and in the trashy tabloids at the supermarket check-out stand. last year.

But, even still, Fox is not one to cry the blues.

With a stiff upper lip, top brass at the alternative Network asserted this morning (to save face?) that the loss in numbers was in line with projections.

At least one performer is smiling.

Paula Abdul, how was your day?

American Idol...Casey bites dust! Justin Bieber a hit!

An electric stage performance by Justin Bieber drove pretty bodacious babes into a frenzy, Idol hometown visits - in what amounted to Hero's welcomes - brought tears to the eye, and a Perez hopeful stormed the stage to take a grab at the brass ring.

On one of those rare occasions, the Judges were weepy, too.

In fact,  all four struggled  to hold back tears - but ended up wearing their hearts on their sleeves - nonetheless.

What an emotional night!

When the big 3 finalists graced the Idol stage - somehow - it all seemed right.

The scuttlebutt this past week at water coolers around the Nation was ominous for the sexy heartthrob.

Casey's "got to go" appeared to be the mantra.

For the handsome stud it had been a thrill ride, of sorts.

As his popularity soared into the stratosphere, the low-key musician often accommodated the scheming shifty-eyed  producers looking to exploit his - um - talent.

The soap contender tossed off his shirt right, left, and center to boost the ratings and win over a female (or male) fan or two at the drop of a hat, in fact.

But, when push came to shove, the people had spoken.

Last night Casey sang his swan song.

Now - Katie Bowersox and Lee DeWiez - are left to belt it out next week in the finals!

The one that nabs the golden prize will probably be climbing the charts shortly after that - the potent power of an Idol plaudit - is that sweet and promising.

To underscore that point?

It  didn't escape my attention that during the course of watching the show, a band singer in the lounge of my Hotel downstairs, chose Adam Lambert's catchy tune - What do you Want for me? - to open her set.

There were a number of surprises last night - enough jolts and adrenalin  rushes - to satisfy even the toughest critics.

For instance, Ryan Seacrest suddenly announced that Perez Hilton was on hand, to introduce a young performer that he "discovered".

Perez - in black "t" (with a ubiquitous caption etched on its face) and jeans beamed

"So, what did you see in Travis Garland," the metrosexual man of-the-hour pointedly asked the Queen of the Blogs.

Did I hear a snicker or two in the audience?

"The fact that he is better than Justin Timberlake."

Unfortunately, that did not turn out to be the case.

Ah, the prooof is in the pudding, as they say.

I found his dance routine sluggish.

After all, it appeared he was trying to recall tricky steps that his backup dancers performed with ease.

The tune - Believe - was mediocre at best.

Efforts by the studio suits to jazz up the number with a myriad of nifty effects didn't manage to disguise the fact the composition was weak and nothing to write home about.

Perez, what were you thinking?

Multi-talented Timberlake must be having a big laugh this morning.

Don't look for a day job, Justin.

In one touching moment, Crystal Bowersox was reunited with her young child, as family and loved ones gazed on choked up with emotion.

Is Ms. Bowersox part of a biker clan?

At a big blow out, the Mayor of the City presented Bowersox with the key to her home town, Toledo.

Crystal later held a concert in the park - Bowerstock - which was packed with well-wishers and signaled the innovative musician is on her way into the big leagues.

Very deserving!

American Idol...Adam Lambert performs! Elvis remembered! Ellen washed out!

American Idol got a shot in the arm tonight when Adam Lambert turned up - all glam - and mentored a handful of the young hopefuls competing on this season's talent show extravaganza.

The first thing you notice about the charismatic pop icon is his eyes.

The luminous peepers - with a hint of sparkle and sly mischief peering out - are a startling blue (me thinks!) brought to the fore with shades of eye shadow that accent the obvious.

This boy is pretty!

The "do" was a little over-the-top, though.  Too much gel, Adam.

And the wardrobe - a make-shift ensemble of shirt-like shifts - a bit drab.

Under the weather last night, kid?

But, Lambert is mesmerizing, and definitely has star quality.

A couple of the kids warbled Elvis tunes - which, in the case of crooner Casey James - was a terrible mistake.

Simon echoed my sentiments precisely.

"It was such a forgetable song. Why would you perform that?"

Ellen and the other Judges were polite, commended the cutie for taking on the challenge, and offered up kudos for his golden voice, stage persona, and the like.

"You look at home in a sea of girls," one quipped.

Frankly, the ponytail look, is a dead one as far as I'm concerned.

And, the wispy bit of whiskers at his lip, downright silly.

Would you plunk a sloppy kiss on that?

Casey pines to be a rocker, but is middle-of-the-road top-forty, all the way.

Until he fathoms that reality he's kidding himself, eh?

Tim's rendition of "Can't Help Falling in Love" - with a spare bare-bones guitar back-up - was straightforward and honest.

Whenvever I get up at Karaoke in WeHo (heh, Kenny!) and warble that one, I jokingly snarl to the half-drunk crowd of buffed dudes, that it is one of the songs that "killed" Elvis.

There were two Elvis's essentially.

The lithe, hip-swivelling crooner, who was raw and wild and oozing with sensuality.

Best hits of that era?

"Return to Sender" and "Heartbreak Hotel"!

The "E" of a later generation was all smaltz, Vegas routine, and a spent shadow of "Elvis".

A gentleman I once knew who worked on one of the TV Specials Elvis  signed on for, confided that the editors were forced to utilize quite a few magic studio techniques, to make the musical event fly.

For good reason.

Elvis oft forgot the words, stumbled on stage, and lost focus throughout.

But, the fans didn't care, they gobbled the legend up.

Like the Kennedy assassination, folks tend to recall where they were when they heard the shocking news of Elvis's death.

I was on Toronto Island at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club when a friend telephoned me about the disturbing unexpected news.

When I turned to an immigrant from India next to me, and relayed the unbelievable news, his response was pretty low-key.

"Oh, he was just a pop star. No one will remember him tomorrow. Who cares?"

I distinctly recall that I assured him that Elvis death's was "big news" and that many people would - not only be stunned - but plummet into a deep well of despair.

Sure enough - within days - fans, hungry media hounds, and curious lookie-loo's - were on their way to Memphis to take part in the circus-like atmosphere that prevailed for weeks-on-end.

When Michael sang "In the Ghetto" tonight, it brought back memories of Elvis.

Just before Elvis released that song, his music career was pretty much in the dumper.

With the release of that song (which touched fans and music aficiandos and tough critics alike) Elvis was elevated to a new status (and level of respect)  in the industry.

It wasn't just the ballad, or his phrasing, that struck a chord.

No sir, it was the sentiment.

The lyrics were comparable to Martin Luther King's speech about having a dream.

One judge labelled Michael's performance sleepy, but on the heels of that harsh criticism, he noted the vocals were hot.

Ellen, on the other hand, noted that she was glad (in retrospect) that they saved Mike  from packing up and heading home with his tail between-his-legs last week..

Katie Stevens was a fine mess visually.

All those do-dads and tacky sequins on her outfit were distracting.

Judges need to stress that the music industry is not just about cutting records and performing, but also, about style, originality, stage presence and persona.

By the way, the popular cast of "Glee" was in the audience.

The hit ensemble show follows "American Idol" on the Fox Network.

In closing, you may be excited to hear that Adam Lambert is slated to perform live tonight on Idol.

He'll show those kids how it's done, just betcha!

Adam Lambert...to mentor American Idol contestants! April 14th episode...

Early this afternoon, Adam Lambert let 'er tweet!

The sizzling hot news?

Lambert will not only mentor  next week's hopefuls on American Idol - but will also perform his latest hit on the stage - at Fox!

"Whataya Want From Me" will blast across the old boob tube on April 14th.

In closing, Adam chirped that he was excited at the prospect of returning to his old stomping grounds.

"Even though I'm just at the start of my recording career, I hope to lend some insight as one who's been thru the Idol adventure."

American Idol...Miley Cyrus triumphs! Simon hissed! Dark moody vibes reared ugly head!

Miley Cyrus inspired a standing ovation, disgruntled members of the audience hissed a bit**y Brit, and Ryan Seacrest got down to the nitty-gritty to the chagrin of many.

Uh-huh!

"American Idol" kicked off a new season filled with promise, until things started to go bump in the night, and sent nervous contestants (and Judges) down a topsy-turvy path that left a few biting their nails and pondering their futures.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/03/american-idolmiley-cyrus-steals-show.html

In contrast, American Idol appeared to be struggling to pull itself up by the bootstraps last night, in the aftermath of the fiasco that went down Tuesday evening.

In a heart-to-heart with the contestants, stacked side-by-side like ducks in a row on hard benches, Ryan Seacrest attempted to make sense of the scoreboard (with a little input from the performers) to determine the status of each hapless competitor.

Talk about tough love!

At one point, when Seacrest repeated  a criticism uttered up by a snide Simon the night before, a handful of guests in the audience hissed enthusiastically.

Ouch!

Was it just me - or did the Judges appear to be on the "hot seat" - last night?

On occasion, Ellen - for instance - appeared to be put out by the line of questioning.

"Well, I wasn't happy with the song he chose," she retorted in response to a query about Casey's turn at the mic on Tuesday night.

"But, I liked his voice," she snipped a bit indignantly.

At one point, when Cowell was asked if he wanted to change an assessment he made, he paused for a second red-faced before reacting.

"No, I don't," he finally coughed up in so many words as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

In view of the pall that was hanging over the room, it was crystal clear to me, that there must have been some grumbling from above by the powers-that-be on high in the executive suite over controversies that reared their ugly during the American Idol premiere show.

Obviously, the boom had been lowered.

In contrast, when charismatic Miley Cyrus alighted on the stage to perform her new single - "The Last Song" - the mood was all hearts and flowers.

In fact, when the pretty songbird wrapped up her performance on a powerful high note, the electric moment garnered her a standing ovation.

Cyrus was taken aback.

"I've never had a standing ovation before," she gushed.

I wasn't surprised.

The song was perfectly suited to her voice and perfomed to perfection with heartfelt emotion.

American Idol contestants would be wise to follow her example!

Nuff said!

Ryan handled details well last night!

That bad, eh?

Karaoke VIP Party...in Silverlake! Hot singers & upbeat nightclub ambiance...

A few years ago, when I shared a two-bedroom apartment at the top of Larrabee Street in WeHo with friends, I often slipped into "Revolver" (a trendy nightclub on the corner) to get up-close-and-personal - and likewise fathom the secrets of - the torch singers who turned out each week to belt out their signature tunes.

Although an aspiring singer, I was relegated to exclusive engagements in the shower, because of numbing stage fright that flooded over me whenever I tried my darndest to warble a note or two in front of a rapt audience.

"At long last, here was a golden opportunity to test the waters," I elatedly gushed to myself one booze-laden night.

After all, it did not escape my watchful eye, that this circle of wet-behind-the-ears stage performers were not inclined to be that critical of phrasing, projection, or vocal style.

In fact, die-hard music-lovers here, regularly cheered "the competition" on.

Say, if they had the ba**s to get up in spotlight two-sheets to-the-wind, why not moi?

So, one auspicious night, I downed a potent cocktail and waited for the worst.

When the affable Karaoke host (Kenny Morse) sang out my name, I surprised the heck out of myself, when I scrambled up and took center stage in the glare of the blinding spotlight.

A hush fell over the room as the first strains of the popular ballad I chose floated out from the speakers, and I slowly began to sing out the first few words of the fifties hit which appeared overhead on a wide screen.

"They ask me how I knew, my true love was true."

"Oh!"

The crowd went wild for a second or two - at which point - they excitedly turned this way 'n that - and praise the Lord - nodded in approval to each friend or stranger seated nearby.

Moreover, when each exquisite note soared through the smoke-filled lounge thereafter - and hit its golden mark - it was obvious from their stunned silence that I held them in the palm of my out-stretched hand.

Ah, it was a snap to perform on stage after that.

Hence, I became a mainstay for weeks on end.

In fact, in those heady days, the little Karaoke Night that "could" - not only attracted a slew of top-notch singers anxious to strut their stuff on stage - but a bevy of celebrities not put off by the notion of having to queue up in a long line snaking down the street to gain entrance.

They lapped it up!

Actually, one night I met celebrated songwriter - Allan Rich - at the local hot-spot.

Talented, down-to-earth guy!

When I asked Allan how he got started in the business, he laughed, as his memory drifted back to an auspicious day many moons ago when he - sort-of - got discovered.

"I was a shoe salesman," he started off slowly.

One day, when he was assisting a gentleman try on - a pair of loafers, running shoes, what-have-you - the outgoing customer innocently asked Rich what he intended to "do" in the future for a full-fledged career.

So, the perky shoe-horn facilitator noted off-the-cuff, that he pined to pen pop tunes.

As luck would have it, the stranger happened to be an exec at a record company.

Imagine that!

Without skipping a beat, he flipped out his wallet, and handed startled Rich a business card.

"When you have a tape of your songs, send them along."

Then, he turned on his new heel, and left.

Down the road, when Rich managed to put together a demo tape, he fired it off post-haste to the stranger.

Months passed, but no cigar, as they say.

Then, one day out-of-the-blue, he got a call from the gentleman who was the harbinger of remarkable news.

Guess what?

The record company loved his material.

Not only that, the "suits" at the record company also thought it the perfect roster of songs for Whitney Houston's new feature film "The Bodyguard".

Holy Mack!

Needless to say, Allan has never looked back since.

One of the songs featured from the songbook- "I want to run to you" - is still a favorite pop tune of mine that I intend to record one day, too.

Sadly, "Revolver" closed its doors and Karaoke has never been quite the same.

Even still, not abandoned by a long shot.

Kenny Karaoke, for example, has continued to carry the torch each week at local clubs for fans still nostalgic for the "craze".

And now, there is good news!

Kenny is hosting a - "KARAOKE WITH KENNY VIP PARTY" - at one of the trendy watering holes in Silver Lake (MJ's) Monday July 6th.

In fact, the effervescent MC is raving about the dazzling up-coming must-attend event!

"The show is very much like our old REVOLVER show with a great bar, great drinks, great attitude, great sound, and great singers."

Just, great!

Count moi in, eh?

Kenny asked that I get the word out to his friends - and "Revolver" Karaoke fans - that he has a big treat for them, too.

If they don't already have an MJ VIP card, all they have to do is zip off an e-mail to the Karaoke Mesiter, and he'll ceremoniously jot down their name on the VIP lis at the door which translates to not only walk-in privileges but access to - exotic cocktails, beer, and what-have-you - at an OPEN bar.

MJ's Monday Night Bash is open to all, though.

So, if you're in the mood to listen to a Diva or two, hustle on over to the popular night spot for a round of Karaoke that will vastly entertain the whole night thru.
