Oprah Winfrey...shows off butt crack curbside! Honorary Oscar has noses out-of-whack!

Quite a few noses got out-of-whack earlier today when it was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences that the Queen of afternoon schlock - um - talk is going to be given the nod with an Honorary Oscar!

As Barbra Streisand would say:
"Hello gorgeous!"

But, not so fast.  Do a posse of power-players in Tinseltown have the clout to nix the prestigious outfit's unprecedented favoritism?

Meanwhile, I'm still chuckling over all the exposure (!) Big "O" unexpectedly snatched up from the jaws of fate at a chic dinner party night-before-last with the former Governor's wife and handsome teen son in tow (on the mend, by the way).

Once the celebrated trio alighted from the chi chi eatery, the paparazzi immediately began to swarm every which way but loose, as they jockeyed for a perch.

As it turns out, the posse of photogs was Oprah's undoing, alright.

Wouldn't you know it?

For example, when the hefty talk-show Diva bent over to scramble inside the purring limo at the curb (albeit in a cumbersome fashion) a tabloid gossip monger nabbed a revealing shot of Ms. Oprah's butt-crack!

It reminded me of a joke I used to tell when I was a kid (which always got a big laugh, by the way).

You know what I'd buy if I had a million bucks?

A new ass 'cause mine is cracked!

Although mine is a tidy butt, Ms. Winfrey has enough bucks for a truckload of fill, if needed!

The Town...Ben Affleck pic entertains! Same old same old...

Essentially, "The Town" (an unimaginative title, by the way) is a basic cops 'n robbers action adventure that entertains with a lot of heart-pumping chase scenes - but, in the final anaylsis - is just the same old same old.

Ben Affleck - Oscar-winner (Good Will Hunting / Best Screenplay) - helmed the project which he also stars in.

Indeed, there is nothing terrible original about this studio-backed flick (the celluloid reels slid into the can @ $37 mil), that sets it apart.

In fact, it appears that the screenwriters (of which Ben Affleck was one) lifted a few ideas from a handful of ground-breaking flicks of yesteryear that transformed the genre, in a sly effort to drum up a magic formula for commercial success.

Bank robbers in jarring masks, bold-faced smash-and-grab heists, and bloody high-speed get-a-aways are a bit played out - don't 'ya think - Ben?

Uh-huh!

The 2 1/2 hour plus tribute to Affleck's ego is a tad old-hat.

As a director, though, the Boston kid showed a lot of promise.

Frankly, I was - not only keen on the way he framed quite a few of the shots - but also blown away by the moods he managed to evoke with a confident brush that articulated his passions.

Once again, Jeremy Renner (who played a boyhood pal and street thug) dazzled audiences with a ballsy performance that was mesmerizing.

In fact, all the supporting players turned in stand-out portrayals that resonated on screen.

"The Town" is not thought-provoking high-brow art, but will undoubtedly rustle up quite a few ticket sales at box offices around the country.

Popcorn sells, after all!

Ben Affleck..."The Town" gets hyped at Toronto Film Festival! Box Office fairs well!

Ben Affleck made a couple of big splashes this past week - when he appeared in person at the Toronto International Film Festival to flog his new flick "The Town" - and at the box office over the weekend where the well-received project he directed (and stars in) rustled up big ticket sales at movie theatres around the country.

I plan to take in a screening this afternoon, so a review will follow later.

"The Town" is Affleck's second stab at directing.

"Gone Baby Gone" was a stellar first-attempt released in 2007.

Once again, the "Good Will Hunting" Academy-Award-Winner (Best Screenplay) returns to familiar terrain in Boston.

Affable Affleck plays a thief plotting a bank robbery - who falls for a teller - thus tossing a monkey wrench into the madcap caper.

A spokesman at Warner Brothers beamed that the flick tends to be playing well to older male ticket-holders.

I hazard a guess that film-goers flocking to the Theatres are Affleck's contemporaries who have been following his career (and sexual hi-jinks with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and others) since he first sauntered onto the scene over a decade ago alongside long-time pal (boyfriend?) Matt Damon.

A loyal fan base like that will sustain Ben's longevity in the fickle film industry.

No problem!

Sofia Coppola..."Somewhere" within striking distance! Stephen Dorff stars...

Once again, Sofia  Coppola intrigues film buffs with her choice of film projects - and likewise - her tendency to be fascinated by the pitfalls of excess.

The shy daughter of a giant in the film industry (director Francis Ford Coppola) - who conjured up a broad masterful portait of historical Diva Marie Antoinette - recently set her sights on a captivating subject much closer to home.

In "Somewhere", Ms. Coppola focuses her insightful lens on a charismatic actor at the height of his powers of seduction, and in the process takes a behind-the-scenes foray into an old Hollywood cliche.

Will success spoil Rock Hunter?

Although the young director's insightful lens focuses on life in the fast lane and its temptations - obsessions with romantic trysts, luxury Hotels and high-end sports cars - "Somewhere" is also a tale about a man in crisis.

Stephen Dorff was cast to play the A-list actor - which was ironic - when you consider that in real life he never made that grade.

Ms.Coppola is best-known for her screenplay - "Lost in Translation" - which nabbed her an Academy Award a scant few years back.

Hotel scenes for the flick - which premiered in Italy this past week - were shot at the chic Chateau Marmont, a popular hang-out for actors in town.

"I like hotels for settings, they are an impermanent place. A lot of the characters I am interested in are in a moment of transition and it seems fitting that they would be in an impermanent setting," Sofia gushed to one reporter in recent days.

Dorff conjectured that "Somewhere" was all about becoming a man.

In the instance of his character, the transformation comes about when his young daughter turns up on his doorstep, after endless dark nights of the soul have taken their toll.

Coppola piped up at one point that to tell the story from a guy's point of view was a challenge because the emotional life of men was different than hers.

Was the mission accomplished?

You be the Judge.

The feature is slated for release in December.

Jerry Lewis...protests & controversy over Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to comic!

Comic Jerry Lewis will be honored with a special "Oscar" by virtue of a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced it will bestow on the long-time performer at the upcoming awards ceremony on February 22nd (2009).

The Jean Hersholt Award is given periodically to an individual in the film business whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.

I penned a post on the announcement a few days ago.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/01/jerry-lewisoscars-honor-comic-with-jean.html

Shortly after I published the notice online , I received a few communications from irate blog readers, who informed me that a number of individuals are opposed to Lewis receiving the award.

In one e-mail , a gentleman who identified himself as Ben Mattlin, noted as follows:

"Regarding your blog about Jerry Lewis' receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, you and your readers should know that many of us object to it. He frequently calls people with disabilities, whom he supposedly helps, "cripples". He refers to gay men as "fags" and has said that women are nothing more than baby-making machines. Moreover, his annual telethon exploits kids with disabilities to garner pity as a fundraising tool, despite the constant entreaties of the disability community to stop the pity campaign. It does more harm than good. But Lewis and his organization have refused to work with our community. Instead, Lewis has threatened to have his critics killed. Lewis is no humanitarian and does not deserve this prize. It is an insult to people with disabilities, the gay rights movement and the memory of Jean Hersholt."

In closing, he added that he'd be happy to discuss the issues further with interested parties.

Mr. Mattlin also provided a link to a web site where an online petition has been posted.

http://thetroublewithjerry.com/

According to the webmaster at the site, over 2400 individuals have already signed the petition which calls on the Academy to cancel its plans to give Lewis the humanitarian award.

Visitors to the site may read and sign the petition in support of the cause, too.

At least twelve organizations, including the American Association of People with Disabilities and the Disability Rights Center, have endorsed the "The Trouble with Jerry" petition to be submitted to the Motion Picture Academy in advance of the Oscar ceremony.

Hollywood can expect to see protests during the days leading up to the February 22nd Oscar Awards ceremony, according to the organizers.

In an update on February 2nd (2009) the protestors noted as follows:

"We have a newly-designed, easy-to-navigate, super-jazzy website."

http://thetroublewithjerry.net/

"Tell everyone you know, post the link on your Facebook page, link your blog to it, etc."

Info and updates on protest actions may be obtained by contacting the organizers by e-mail.

info@thetroublewithjerry.com

Of course, I recall there was a big brouhaha in the press many years ago, when Mr. Lewis was accused - as he is today at the aforementioned website - of name-calling and engaging in questionable (distasteful) tactics to raise much-needed funds for the respected Muscular Dystrophy Association each year at the Labor Day week-end telethon.

At the time, I was quite young, and my head was in the clouds as I pursued my creative endeavours; consequently, I did not follow the news reports very closely.

But, it was my understanding - that in his defense - the comic stressed comments he made were not intended to be mean-spirited nor were they uttered up with the express purpose of putting-down or insulting anyone.

If I recall correctly, he apologized profusely, too.

But, Mr. Mattlin stated matter-of-fact in his e-mail that Jerry and his organization have refused to work with the community, which infers that issues are yet to be resolved.

For starters, Mattlin and his supporters argue that Jerry's means to an end each year as the Telethon rolls around, do not further the cause.

“Pity and charity, as practiced by Jerry Lewis, undermine our equality," they've accused.

A remarkallegedly made by Lewis - that a disabled individual is just “half a person" - infuriated many, as well.

In response to his disabled critics, the Telethon host snarled:

“You don’t want to be pitied because you’re a cripple in a wheelchair? Stay in your house!”

In view of the foregoing, it appears that Mr. Lewis may have to clear the air once and for all.

The honoree is welcome to post a comment at this blog site to tell his side of the story, clarify any issues or facts that he feels have been distorted or misrepresented - and ultimately - set the record straight.

In the alternative, I wholeheartedly suggest that when Mr. Lewis steps up to the podium to accept the prestigious humanitarian award on February 22nd at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, that he apologize for any misunderstandings, ask for forgiveness, whatever.

Otherwise, a cloud of controversy, will continue to plague the comic - and no doubt - haunt Jean Hersholt.

Albert Schweitzer once said:

"Anyone who proposes to do good must not expect people to roll stones out of his way, but must accept his lot calmly, even if they roll a few stones upon it."

Mickey Rourke...Oscar nod for the Wrestler!

The young stud in old glory days...

Undoubtedly, you're familiar with Mickey Rourke's film project, the Wrestler.

In a nutshell, the story goes something like this.

Although once a headlining Wrestler, Randy "the Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) has hit the skids.

The down-on-his-luck athlete manages to rustle up a few bucks here and there, though, performing for a handful of devout fans in high school gyms and community centers out on the East Coast.

Relationships are a tough row to hoe for Randy - one with his daughter for instance - so he throws himself full-throttle into the illusionary glory of fight bouts.

While basking in the short-lived adrenalin rush, he pines for a chance at the brass ring.

A trouble spot in his health (a heart attack) forces him to recognize how precious life is.

Although I was invited to the premiere at Mann's Chinese Theatre sponsored by the AFI last month, I sauntered over to the ultra chi-chi kick-off bash for the Danish Film Festival held amid the old-world-charm of the tony Roosevelt Hotel.

Press pals who attended the Wrestler on my behalf were in accord about one thing.

The fight pic was a downer.

So, it's doubtful I'll be in the "mood" to catch it.

However, this week when I attended a screening of "Milk", a trailer for the drama flashed up on the screen before the feature presentation.

If the acting I witnessed onscreen that night in the clips is matched throughout the Wrestler, then I am inclined to take a gamble and note for the record - in spite of the fact I have not screened the drama in its entirety - that Rourke may get a nod from Oscar!

No surprise!

Every scene Rourke graced the screen in, sprang to life by virtue of a performance that was both moving and deeply honest.

In fact, it's been a couple of years since I've encountered such a natural unaffected acting style that resonated with such truth.

Rourke was a revelation!

Now, let's hope his handlers don't fu** it up for him prior to the big night!

Gwyneth Paltrow...Goopy, dude! Web site doesn't nourish...

To be quite honest with 'ya, actress Gwyneth Paltrow lost me when she scrambled up on stage a couple of years ago, and sobbed uncontrollably for about twenty minutes, after snagging a coveted Oscar.

Goop - Paltrow's second grab for the brass ring - rubs me the same way.

Frankly, it doesn't deliver up its promises from the get-go.

On the main page on the web site - Paltrow unceremoniously dumped on unsuspecting chartered members of the Internet this past week - the high-strung actress waxes eloquently about her much-anticipated vanity offering.

"Nourish the inner aspect," the spoiled little rich girl urges her guests.

And, how she intends to dish it up!

But, not before confusing the heck out of 'ya!

For example - when a web surfer clicks on a handful of odd-ball icons arranged neatly (she likes things to be nice) across the main page - the mystical little webmaster returns the viewer ad nauseam back to the start-up page without having accomplished a single thing.

Ah, I get it.

Rearrange the letters of Goop and you come up with Pogo!

Just hop around Goop on your Pogo stick, dude!

Soon, it will be obvious to 'ya.

Goop is an exercise in futility.

If not - maybe the newsletter I signed up for this afternoon - will zip off a message over the weekend and laughingly titter the obvious.

"Julian, 'ya just got punked."

Gwyneth, your site kind of reminds me of an old joke.

An old philosopher once said,

"To be is to do"

A fellow scholar was inclined to add further,

"To do is to be"

But, Frank Sinatra said it best, when he crooned,

"Do be do be do"

Gotcha!
