Ben Affleck...ambushed by Zsa Zsa's husband for photo op! Bennifer obliges!

One of the gossip tabloids flashed a publicity still of Ben Affleck and Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband across the old boob tube last evening which caused quite a hoot around the country.

In the candid shot a photographer captured Prince Von Anhalt beaming with his arm around Affleck.

In contrast, the actor's demanour was somewhat somber.

In fact, the expression on his face spoke volumes.

In his mind, he appeared to be crying-the-blues:

"I'd rather have 'em call me Bennifer, than be taking a photograph for posterior - um - posterity with this European joker!"

The inside scoop on the odd bedfellows?

Apparently, the film company has rented Zsa Zsa's estate for the setting of Affleck's latest flick.

My sources have been whispering that the "Prince" has been twisting arms to drum up a cameo role on the project.

The Town...Ben Affleck pic entertains! Same old same old...

Essentially, "The Town" (an unimaginative title, by the way) is a basic cops 'n robbers action adventure that entertains with a lot of heart-pumping chase scenes - but, in the final anaylsis - is just the same old same old.

Ben Affleck - Oscar-winner (Good Will Hunting / Best Screenplay) - helmed the project which he also stars in.

Indeed, there is nothing terrible original about this studio-backed flick (the celluloid reels slid into the can @ $37 mil), that sets it apart.

In fact, it appears that the screenwriters (of which Ben Affleck was one) lifted a few ideas from a handful of ground-breaking flicks of yesteryear that transformed the genre, in a sly effort to drum up a magic formula for commercial success.

Bank robbers in jarring masks, bold-faced smash-and-grab heists, and bloody high-speed get-a-aways are a bit played out - don't 'ya think - Ben?

Uh-huh!

The 2 1/2 hour plus tribute to Affleck's ego is a tad old-hat.

As a director, though, the Boston kid showed a lot of promise.

Frankly, I was - not only keen on the way he framed quite a few of the shots - but also blown away by the moods he managed to evoke with a confident brush that articulated his passions.

Once again, Jeremy Renner (who played a boyhood pal and street thug) dazzled audiences with a ballsy performance that was mesmerizing.

In fact, all the supporting players turned in stand-out portrayals that resonated on screen.

"The Town" is not thought-provoking high-brow art, but will undoubtedly rustle up quite a few ticket sales at box offices around the country.

Popcorn sells, after all!

Ben Affleck..."The Town" gets hyped at Toronto Film Festival! Box Office fairs well!

Ben Affleck made a couple of big splashes this past week - when he appeared in person at the Toronto International Film Festival to flog his new flick "The Town" - and at the box office over the weekend where the well-received project he directed (and stars in) rustled up big ticket sales at movie theatres around the country.

I plan to take in a screening this afternoon, so a review will follow later.

"The Town" is Affleck's second stab at directing.

"Gone Baby Gone" was a stellar first-attempt released in 2007.

Once again, the "Good Will Hunting" Academy-Award-Winner (Best Screenplay) returns to familiar terrain in Boston.

Affable Affleck plays a thief plotting a bank robbery - who falls for a teller - thus tossing a monkey wrench into the madcap caper.

A spokesman at Warner Brothers beamed that the flick tends to be playing well to older male ticket-holders.

I hazard a guess that film-goers flocking to the Theatres are Affleck's contemporaries who have been following his career (and sexual hi-jinks with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and others) since he first sauntered onto the scene over a decade ago alongside long-time pal (boyfriend?) Matt Damon.

A loyal fan base like that will sustain Ben's longevity in the fickle film industry.

No problem!

Jennifer Lopez...shows off bu** crack @ the Grove!

Cougar scouts the terrain!

TMZ ambushed Jennifer Lopez yesterday when she was out on a shopping spree at the Grove (with a posse of handlers in tow).

Like many celebrities, cautious J. Lo was inclined to keep her distance, which hindered the photo op a tad for the aggressive media pups.

When the fleshy star catches sight of their revealing segment which broadcast this evening, she may be inclined to be more kissy-face next time Harvey's kids cross her path.

You know the old saying.

"You get a lot more with honey than vinegar."

As Jennifer was alighting into the backseat of the limo, a sharp paparazzi dude - quick on the uptake - managed to zoom in and get a bulls-eye view of her butt-crack!

The gossip hounds compared the ghastly sight to the grand canyon!

"The continental divide," another gossip monger guffawed.

Ouch!

It reminded me of the old joke.

"If you had a million dollars, what would you buy?"

"A new ass. Mine's cracked."

Rump roast anyone?

Screen Actors Guild...sh** or get off the pot!

Rebel rouser Affleck turns off SAG Membership with elitist views

Although I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, I haven't been reporting much on the contract negotiations much ballyhooed in the press in recent days.

For the most part, it's because I have been ticked off with the way the negotiators have been handling the talks.

Notwithstanding, disruptive factions within SAG have upset the status quo to serve their own selfish ends.

And, that is unsettling too.

For instance, when the issue of a potential strike arose, an upstart group referring to themselves as the "Rebels" - consisting of a few high-profile actors such as Ben Affleck and Kevin Bacon - cried out for a mind-boggling approach to the issue.

Because a large percentage of actors in the guild don't work full-time - and (in their opinion) had nothing to lose if a strike was called - bozos like Affleck and Bacon were urging a stipulation that only full-time actors be granted the privilege to vote on the contract negotiations.

In a follow-up post, I criticized the "Rebels" for taking an elitist approach.

After all, one of the original missions of the Guild, was to ensure that all actors were equal in the eyes of the "shop" - whether they be an extra, a day-player - or full-fledged star.

In closing, I noted in that scathing review of their misguided efforts, that their so-called solution to the problem was a dangerous one because it played into the hands of the producers.

In closing, I posed a question.

Have you never heard of the old axiom, "Divide and Conquer"?

Shortly after that post, the rebels faded into oblivion, for some inexplicable reason. (!)

Even still, as the contentious talks continued between the negotiators and the producers, factions within the guild threatened to split SAG asunder.

So, at the next Board election, members scrambled to promote their candidates to ensure their "voices" would be heard at the bargaining table.

Unfortunately, the votes were almost split, and SAG ended up with two warring factions deep within the heartbeat of the guild.

Since then, negotiations have been sluggish.

Each week - on average - I have received about three e-mails updating me (!) on the clever maneuverings "going down" on both sides in the contract dispute.

But, no cigar!

Although some contend that our sister Union (AFTRA, of which I am dues-paying member also) was smart to negotiate and strike a deal early, I disagree.

As usual, the negotiating team sold the membership down the river!

Unfortunately, SAG has gone too far the other way.

What irks me most is the "paper tiger" approach.

Guild negotiators threaten to strike, but don't.

It's gotten to the point now - that when the sceptre rears its ugly head as a potential bargaining tool - the producers just shrug - yawn - and respond accordingly.

Ho-hum!

At a crucial stage of the "game", SAG has finally initiated proceedings for a referendum to vote on a strike.

Once again, though, the powers-that-be at SAG have screwed up.

Now that SAG has tipped their hand - and warned the producers about a potential strike in January - the studios and independents have been given ample opportunity to get all their "ducks" in a row before that eventuality.

Stupid!

Personally, I think that one day - out-of-the blue and without so much as a peep - all actors on all sets and sound stages around the country should swiftly and stridently march off the job.

Then, we'll have 'em by the short and curlies.

After all, a sudden stop in production - and a vital loss of revenue - is the only action capable of landing a knock-out punch.

Maybe then, the producers will be ready to strike a deal!

Gwyneth Paltrow...Goopy, dude! Web site doesn't nourish...

To be quite honest with 'ya, actress Gwyneth Paltrow lost me when she scrambled up on stage a couple of years ago, and sobbed uncontrollably for about twenty minutes, after snagging a coveted Oscar.

Goop - Paltrow's second grab for the brass ring - rubs me the same way.

Frankly, it doesn't deliver up its promises from the get-go.

On the main page on the web site - Paltrow unceremoniously dumped on unsuspecting chartered members of the Internet this past week - the high-strung actress waxes eloquently about her much-anticipated vanity offering.

"Nourish the inner aspect," the spoiled little rich girl urges her guests.

And, how she intends to dish it up!

But, not before confusing the heck out of 'ya!

For example - when a web surfer clicks on a handful of odd-ball icons arranged neatly (she likes things to be nice) across the main page - the mystical little webmaster returns the viewer ad nauseam back to the start-up page without having accomplished a single thing.

Ah, I get it.

Rearrange the letters of Goop and you come up with Pogo!

Just hop around Goop on your Pogo stick, dude!

Soon, it will be obvious to 'ya.

Goop is an exercise in futility.

If not - maybe the newsletter I signed up for this afternoon - will zip off a message over the weekend and laughingly titter the obvious.

"Julian, 'ya just got punked."

Gwyneth, your site kind of reminds me of an old joke.

An old philosopher once said,

"To be is to do"

A fellow scholar was inclined to add further,

"To do is to be"

But, Frank Sinatra said it best, when he crooned,

"Do be do be do"

Gotcha!
