Fox 5 News...SOS drive for School Supplies! McDonalds drop off donation center!

In a few weeks, students will head off to school once again to put their noses to the grindstone.

Unfortunately, a handful of parents may not be able to sleep at night, because they'll be worrying about how to cover the escalating costs of schoolbooks and supplies necessary to keep their children abreast of their studies.

Fox 5 News - and a posse of giving individuals (including the Salvation Army) - have launched a drive for school supplies with the specific aim of overcoming that hurdle for concerned loving parents.

In fact, the Fox News team will be on location tomorrow at one of the drop-off centres at McDonalds situated at Sunset and Eastern (2550 East Sunset) in Las Vegas.

Donations will also be accepted on air at Fox on the 4th of August as well.

Your contributions may also be delivered to the Salvation Army in person.

Stop by and say hi to the news anchors and their crew at Fox 5 News - and, if possible - donate much-needed items such as notebooks, backpacks, pencils, sharpeners, gift cards, crayons, loose-leaf books and paper, calculators, glue sticks, highlighters, colored pencils, tape, and any other materials youngsters may need during the learning process.

Just bet that once you do contribute the experience will literally warm the cockles of your heart!

Salvation Army...feeding needy in streets of San Francisco! Worthy charity!

In a News report tail-end of last week, analysts at charitable organizations whined that donations were down in the public sector, with at least one notable exception.

Salvation Army still manages to rustle up millions on behalf of their kettle in the streets "campaign" each holiday season.

The heart-warming concept charms - after all - the touching images are so  "Miracle on 34th Street" and Macy's parade.

Tradition!

One night last week  - I was a little weary around the edges after running myself ragged all day -  when I ran smack dab into a stranger approaching passers-by out-of-the-blue on the dark dank streets.

“Care for something to eat from the Salvation army,“ he barked out sharply, as he thrust two cellophane-wrapped sandwiches in my direction.

Not wishing to chow down on a nourishing lifeline - intended for a needy homeless person - I was inclined to graciously pass.

Even still, the impromptu encounter managed to “feed my head” (as Grace Slick of the Jefferson Starship might succinctly put it) on an evening when I was lost in my own selfish thoughts.

It was heartening to discover first-hand  that charitable organizations such as the Salvation Army are still actively involved in the community and providing a meal (along with a smidgen of hope) to the down-and-out in these troubling economic times.

For this reason, I urge readers to consider writing a check to the “army” of well-meaning do-gooders, since the much-needed funds will surely be well spent.

Las Vegas Sun...Summer Camp fund for kids! Donate today...

As I was flipping through the pages of the Review Journal in Vegas this morning, I caught a notice in the morning daily making a pitch for donations to raise funds for kids to attend summer camp.

Because of the "Summer Camp Fund" sponsored by the Sun newspaper, approximately 1100 disadvantaged kids will have the the chance to experience companionship with kids their own age and the joy of an up-close outdoors encounter with nature away from the mean streets of the city.

"This is a new experience for kids who have never seen the moutains just outside our city," liaison Julie Doyle beamed (spokesperson for Potosi Pines Camp fund).

The notice triggered memories of my own two-week summer camp excursions to Camp Wabanaki when I was growing up in Toronto many moons ago.

In fact, I was inspired to pen a post on the childhood memory last year.

Barack Obama...Vons asking for donations to Special Olympics!

In line at Vons supermarket yesterday, a cashier asked me if I'd like to make a donation to the Special Olympics.

When I turned my head to a shopper next to me with an expression of disbelief on my face (in view of the Obama boo-boo which occurred on the Tonight Show Thursday Night) their reaction was the same!

Yeah, their jaw dropped, too.

A coincidence?

Or, was Vons seizing the day and playing on public sympathy to rustle up funds?

"Not today," I responded politely. "But, I expect Obama may want to."

"Right," the hefty amazon woman muttered almost under her breath, as my change fell into the coin box in front of me.

Personally, I hate being taxed at the check-out when I shop for groceries, no matter how worthy the cause.

Bill Clinton...wishy-washy & lacks integrity! Former Prez ignores Prop 8 protests slated for San Diego

Another testy moment for slick Willy!

In spite of the fact Bill Clinton has stated for the record that he opposes Proposition 8, the former President has refused to cancel a speaking engagement ($$$) at a San Diego Hotel on Sunday - owned and operated by businessman David Manchester - who contributed $125,000.00 in support of the anti-gay marriage initiative in California.

Opponents to Proposition 8 have been boycotting the Hotel - in a vocal strident action - which has allegedly resulted in a revenue loss of over $2 million to the smug Hotelier.

Although reputable organizations such as the American Association of Law Schools, the California Nurses Association, and the International Foundation of Employee Benefits have honored the boycott in the recent past by foregoing on following through on events booked at the Manchester, the California State Bar - who have invited slick Willy to elucidate his thoughts on the holiday weekend - won't budge.

A Clinton lackey informed Associated Press that while Clinton's views have not changed on the issue, he intends to honor his commitment to speak.

Of course, this is from the man who has always been wishy-washy to begin with.

Slick Willy was the ingenuous dude who admitted to smoking marijuana - but, not before asserting first - that he did not "inhale".

The former PREZ with the active libido also conjured up a curious slogan for the military when the issue of Homosexuality reared its ugly - um - head.

"Don't ask. Don't tell."

I guess the Lewinski affair inspired that one - at least from Hillary's point of view - I'd speculate.

And, if I am not mistaken, the flim-flam man also also had the audacity to stoop quite low and split hairs when it came time to fess up about his infidelities.

"It depends on what "is" is," he conjectured, with an awkward "caught with his di** in the wringer" sort-of expression on his naughty little school-boy face!

If Mr. Clinton took a defiant stand, instead of sitting on the picket fence once again, he might effect some positive change instead of the same old tripe.

In fact, I just betcha that if Clinton backed out of the commitment this late in the game, while the spotlight is so intense on the issues, his sponsors just might re-think their stance on Proposition 8, don't 'ya think?

But, since the man has no integrity?

Won't happen.

He'll just slink away with his di** hanging limply between his legs, as usual.

"You don't have any ba**s either, Bill."

Chelsea Clinton...making a difference with CHAI (Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative)! Donate today...

When Chelsea Clinton was trotted out on the campaign trail last fall to rustle up some votes from her own age group, I was a little reticent about jumping on the band wagon.

In spite of the fact I very rarely found fault with Chelsea per se - after all, she carried herself well and acted in good taste whenever she appeared on behalf of her Mom at public and political rallies - it was the woman, Hillary Clinton, who kept me snickering from afar.

Nope, I never warmed up to the pant-suited politician gave me the willies (no pun intended) and made me feel ill at ease.

Hillary was just too disingenuous - in the words of the PREZ - and conniving for the good of the country, in my estimation.

Whitewater was always at the back of mind, fanning the flames of doubt, too!

Now that Obama is firmly ensconced in the White House, and Hillary is Secretary of State, I did not expect to hear a peep out of Chelsea again.

Wrong!

Young Chelsea has taken up a cause.

The pretty young gal is now involved with project CHAI, a project funded under the auspices of her father's charitable organization, The William Clinton Foundation.

In her communication, Chelsea informed me how exciting her involvement with CHAI has been to date.

"This summer, I had the great opportunity of traveling to Africa with my father, where we met Jean Pierre, a young boy in a rural village in Rwanda. Jean Pierre is alive and well today because of the antiretroviral treatments that the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) was able to make accessible to him."

"Jean Pierre told us that he wants to grow up to be a doctor and give more people a chance to live a healthy life.

"Jean Pierre's story is inspiring, not just because he's benefiting from the work of everyone at CHAI, but also because he's leading by example with his lifetime goal of giving back and serving others through medicine."

Chelsea impressed upon me her hope that generous Americans will consider supporting CHAI and the Clinton Foundation's work in the U.S. and around the globe in a myriad of ways, but specifically by virtue of a donation.

"Gifts of any size make a very real difference," she noted passionately.

For example, $15 provides a life-saving food package for an HIV-positive child for one month, while $30 pays for 15 dosing tools for physicians and pharmacists to help accurately dose children on HIV/AIDS treatment.

A generous gift of $80 ensures that eight community health workers can provide monitoring of adherence and medication intake for all HIV-positive people in a Malawian village for a week.

And believe it or not, $150 provides access to medical care and support -including transport to and from a treatment center, counseling, and nutrition - to one HIV-positive child in India for a year.

Why not consider coughing up some dough today, eh?

In addition to CHAI, it appears that there are other worthy causes on the agenda at the Foundation, too.

I'll be third on the left behind Bill...



Gosh - I thought I put a block on e-mails from wily Hillary and slick Willy after they went down with the good ship lollipop - with the express intent of zapping all future communications into the spam mail box.

Well, maybe it slipped my mind. Or - just maybe the Clinton's have powerful Voo-Doo powers way beyond Yahoo's protective arm - that I am unfamiliar with.

You guessed it.

The persistent duo landed in my Yahoo mail box later this afternoon with an invitation for me to put in my face at the Democratic National Convention next week in Denver.

Get this! All I have to do is pay a paltry five bucks.

Is Barack aware of the cheapie party the Clinton's are tossing beneath his presumptive nose?

In the communication - addressed quite simply to "Dear Julian" - Bill starts off methodically by noting that he has done a lot of role-playing - um - played so many roles at so many of the Dem Conventions over the years.

Yeah, he's been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate and - oh, that was Frank Sinatra - wasn't it?

I'll let him use his own choice words,

"I've been there as a campaign worker, a governor, a keynote speaker, a nominee, a president, and a former president."

Then, he goes on to tease me a little,

"But no convention is quite like your first. There is nothing like seeing for the first time so many people in one place working toward one common purpose: electing the next Democratic president. It's an inspiration and you don't want to miss it if you have a chance."

I'll hop right to it, Bill.

So, what's the catch?

For starters, Bill urges that I act right away.

"Take Hillary up on her offer and contribute by midnight tonight for a chance to attend the Denver convention in person. You'll get to see Hillary speak on Tuesday, and Barack Obama - the next president (?) of the United States - on Thursday."

But, what about that McCain guy? 'Ya know, the wrinkly old dude that Paris Hilton is always fussing over?

He's of no consequence, I guess.

Besides, there's a bonus for me if I jump on the bandwagon tonight.

Bill notes Hillary will take time out of her busy schedule (!) to have a one-on-one chat with moi.

Fireside, I wonder?

Guess what? Bill also assures me he'll saunter by to say hello, too.

I must jot down a reminder on my "to do" list not to forget my miniature video cam.

But, I have to act fast; after all, the instructions - er - invitation is quite specific:

"Enter (?) before midnight tonight for a chance to see me, Hillary, and Barack Obama at the convention in Denver next week!"

If I don't respond by twelve on the dot, what will happen?

Will I turn into a pumpkin or - eghads - a full-fledged republican, do 'ya think?

Barack Obama...double talk signals Hillary out of "VP" loop!

Barack, full of hot air lately...


In a sly effort to appease a handful of potential donors, Barack has been engaging in a little "double-talk" lately.

For instance, in a conversation with a Hillary Clinton supporter in recent days, the Senator skillfully maneuvered his way through a couple of land mines in a bold-faced effort to avoid "tipping" his hand in respect to the Clinton "running-mate" issue.

In my estimation, it was a deceitful ploy to string the woman along (Jill Iscol, a Hillary supporter) without ruffling any feathers or negating opportunities for cash hand-outs in the future.

All you have to do is read between the lines and the truth becomes evident!

Although he told the potential donor that Hillary was on his "list", he added that the situation with her hubby, Bill, was - er - "complicated".

After all, he opined philosophically,

"Once you're a president, even if you're a former president, you're always a president."

Or to quote Gertrude Stein,

"A rose is a rose is a rose."

Eh?

While Obama assured Ms. Iscol that Bill wouldn't be a "disqualifying" factor, he did wonder aloud if a second "spouse" would make the White House a little crowded.

Fine, if you're into three-ways, I guess!

According to his terminology, he's grappling with the issues, in spite of the fact it's a "no-brainer".

This leads me to believe he'll let the whole scenario play out as long as it is to his advantage, then dump Hillary.

All is fair in love and politics, right?
