Fox 5 News...SOS drive for School Supplies! McDonalds drop off donation center!

In a few weeks, students will head off to school once again to put their noses to the grindstone.

Unfortunately, a handful of parents may not be able to sleep at night, because they'll be worrying about how to cover the escalating costs of schoolbooks and supplies necessary to keep their children abreast of their studies.

Fox 5 News - and a posse of giving individuals (including the Salvation Army) - have launched a drive for school supplies with the specific aim of overcoming that hurdle for concerned loving parents.

In fact, the Fox News team will be on location tomorrow at one of the drop-off centres at McDonalds situated at Sunset and Eastern (2550 East Sunset) in Las Vegas.

Donations will also be accepted on air at Fox on the 4th of August as well.

Your contributions may also be delivered to the Salvation Army in person.

Stop by and say hi to the news anchors and their crew at Fox 5 News - and, if possible - donate much-needed items such as notebooks, backpacks, pencils, sharpeners, gift cards, crayons, loose-leaf books and paper, calculators, glue sticks, highlighters, colored pencils, tape, and any other materials youngsters may need during the learning process.

Just bet that once you do contribute the experience will literally warm the cockles of your heart!

Fox 5 News...Dave Hall fashion turn gets nod! Stylish man-about-town!

Recently, I took a poke at Dave Hall, and a couple of fashion choices that he made on-camera at Fox 5 News which were a definite "no no".

But, when a high-profile television personality gets it "right", I am also inclined to give an approving nod, too.

For example, today when I switched on the morning news, I was quite delighted to catch sight of Mr. Hall in a truly dapper "look" that suited the anchorman to a "t".

Hall was sporting an elegant black suit, teamed with a plain fancy-dress shirt, and a patterned tie that echoed the colors throughout the chic ensemble.

The mixing-and-matching would have been tough for even an expert stylist to pull off, but the charismatic newsie threw together a tasteful outfit with deft aplomb.

A rule of thumb?

If a gent is inclined to don a dress shirt with a stripe or check pattern, it is best to team it with a solid tie in complementing colors, on a dark (or light) silhouette (suit, sport coat & slacks, etc.) that match up admirably.

A savvy dude may get away with a patterned-tie on a patterned shirt - but, even for the most adventurous stud - it tends to be a tricky proposition.

Unless, the stylish man-about-town is going for controlled clashing (deliberate competing patterns), which is rarely accomplished successfully without the expert advice of a top fashion designer or stylist.

A parting tip?

A conservative approach is usually the best road to travel down in business (in the Corporate environment, for instance), for on-camera newsmen, and politicians (the right-colored tie will instill confidence in the voters and viewers at home around the country).

Oh, by the way, try to refrain from smelling like soap (old spice, too) in addition to avoiding gaudy over-the-top jewellery.

A simple understated watch or wedding band is best.

Fox 5 News...Dave Hall style! What were you thinking, dude?

When I switched on the the television to catch the morning news bright-and-early, I was literally forced to do a double-take when I spied Dave Hall's persona splash across the wide screen all sweetness-and-light.


OMG!

What were you thinking, dude?

The usually fashionable news anchor had spruced up the goose - gilded the lily - in fact.

For some inexplicable reason, Mr. Hall was inclined to layer a (neon) fuchsia-colored dress shirt - with brilliant white tie - on an otherwise chic dark silhouette (pricey black suit).

I call it the "ice cream" look - okay for young Lotharios and their pals at a boisterous wedding reception - but strictly no-no for a television news anchor.

Too much contrast!

The Fashion Police would probably label it "the gangsta" look.

For hints on the proper way to "Dress for Success" on-camera, Dave, check out Brian Williams on the nightly news (he's always impeccable).

Or, stop into a menswear shop, and get some expert advice from a stylist.

Dave, your fashion faux pas was right up there, and ranks with Dave Letterman's tendency to sport white socks with dark dress shoes (!!!).

Looks like you're heading for my worst-dressed list of 2011.

Fox 5 News...upbeat, informative & entertaining! Style tip for Dave Hall...

When the light streams through a crack in the curtain at dawn, I flip on the television to Fox 5 News in Las Vegas.

After all, I have found that the local station provides up-to-the-minute news alerts, early-morning smilers, and delicious entertainment scuttlebutt worth catching before I saunter out the door to greet the day!

That male anchor is gay as a goose, though, isn't he?

Just watch the hands, Dave, and you'll be alright.

But, Mr. Hall is in dire need of a style tip or two judging by his sloppy appearance on-camera yesterday.

For example, otherwise tasteful suit jacket puckered around his waist in an unsightly manner, for starters.

A definite "no no".

Watch out, Dave, the fashion police will getcha on that oversight alone.

If that wasn't bad enough, the tip of Mr. Hall's tie was also poking out in the crotch area (not that I was intentionally taking a gander there) to beat the band.

Dave, the rule of thumb?

If the suit jacket (or sport coat) doesn't drape properly in a seated position, then leave the bottom button undone!

Simple, eh?

Keep up the scintillating news bites, by the way, 'cause they make our day!

Backstreet Boys & New Kids on the Block...gig @ Mandalay Bay July 3rd! Tickets pricey!

One newsie at a local media outlet was crying the blues over the fact tickets for the much-ballyhooed "Backstreet Boys / New Kids on the Block" concert at Mandalay Bay were too pricey for her budget.

Notwithstanding, it is expected that the high-profile gig will sell-out, no matter what the cost of admission.

After all, quite a few nostalgia buffs - fans of both popular boy-bands, too - have been chopping-at-the-bit to get-down-and-dirty and par-tay to the beat of the sizzling hot danceable tunes that once held 'em in sway a scant decade or so ago on the dizzying pop charts.

Real die-hard boy-toy aficionados will also be springing big bucks to attend the Official after-party which kicks-off at trendy chic Chateau on the heels of what is expected to be a dynamite memorable stage performance (Paris Hotel).

See 'ya there - if I decide to cough up the big bucks - that is!

Job Fair...Dress for Success! No Cell Phones! No Shorts!

If you're heading for one of those job fairs in Las Vegas next week, it's important to follow a few golden rules if 'ya hanker to land gainful employment with great pay to boot!

For starters?

Dress for success - and that means - no shorts (for starters)!

And, steer clear of peacock ensembles like the one that the Television News anchor (Fox News 5) sported on air bright-and-early at-the-crack-of-dawn this morning.

The hapless newsie committed a fashion faux pas when he teamed an elegant wine-colored dress shirt (trimmed with a starched-white collar!) with a tie (in a lighter shade of rose) against a dark silhouette (i.e. a chic two-piece suit).

In a nutshell?

The unfashionable fop whipped up a "pimp look" that would have turned-off any employer.

In the altnerative?

Well - an understated tie in conservative colors (with a shirt sans constrasting blinding-white collar) - would surely been preferable (and triggered a nod of approval from a potential boss).

There are another couple of tips worth following, too.

Ignore a cell phone if it goes off during the course of the job interview.

If you throw caution to the window - and elect to answer it - your resume will probably be tossed in the garbage (go figure).

And, dashing outside for a smoke is a no-no, too.

Any Nun will  tell 'ya, it is a dirty habit!

In fact, don't show up at a one-on-one interview with bold splashes of cologne - clinging to your body perfect - either.

By the way, as we say in show biz, break a leg!

Fox News...squeaky wheel gets oil. Underdog news outlet movin' up...

Move on up!

Well, they won't have Fox News to kick around any more!

And, the brass at the underdog "network" have Helen Thomas to thank for it.

The White House Correspondents' Association has announced that they will be playing some musical chairs in the briefing room at the White House in the next few days.

Say what?

A classic case of squeaky wheel getting the oil?

On the heels of the unceremonious departure of Helen Thomas, Fox was given the nod to pack up their kit 'n kaboodle and slip into a prestigious slot in the front row where all the action is.

According to the WHCA, politics did not play a role in their decision to move Fox "up".

"We were  persuaded by Fox's length of service and commitment to the White House television pool."

Since the forced retirement of Helen Thomas (who was shown the back door for making inappropriate comments on-the-fly a few weeks ago ) three of the major news outlets have been chomping at the bit to inch closer to the podium where they would be better placed to eyeball the President at White House press briefings.

Under the revised seating plan, Associated Press will hold court in the center spot, vacated by Thomas.

Fox News will feather a little nest (in the old wire services spot) alongside CNN and a couple of reputable Broadcast Networks of note.

In the spite of the changes, Bloomberg remains in the second row, as NPR moves up from the third row to Fox's current second-row seat.

Although the Financial Times will now get a regular seat, U.S. News & World Report lost theirs.

Meanwhile, Politico and American Urban Radio Networks moved into the third row, as the Washington Times fell back into the fourth without argument.

The foreign press pool was granted its own seat under the revised plan.

Several news organizations either petitioned to get regular seats in the briefing room - or made a bid to keep their current seats - which signalled all may not be cozy and well in the White House Press Room just yet.

Joe Sestak...Fox News chases down Senator in corridors of power!

What a hoot!

If you turn to Fox News you'll catch a harried attempt by reporters and camera-men to corner their latest prey Senator Joe Sestak.

Fox is hell-bent on getting a verbal statement about the brewing scandal around former President Bill Clinton in the wake of the news that at the direction of the Chief of White House Staff, the former President was asked to act as an intermediary to "test the waters" in respect to dropping out of the primaries.

Just moments ago, Fox reporters - who have been staking out territory on Washington Hill with the ultimate aim of having a go at Senator Joe Sestak - suddenly spied their target and began a merry chase.

The Senator tried to avoid the aggressive Fox reporters by ducking  down a stairwell.

The paparazzi followed in hot pursuit as they hurled pointed questions in his direction.

The Senator was due to "vote" on an issue and used that excuse to explain his failure to be straightforward with the press.

Sestak previously noted for the record that he was not going to dodge questions.

Hence, the reason Fox News chose to appear unexpectedly on his doorstep, for an impromptu interview.

Senator Sestak promised to make a statement shortly, so now media hounds wait with bated breath in the corridors of power for the answers.

John McCain...Matt Lauer puts Senator on hot seat on Today Show! Sarah Palin vetting issue...

That John McCain is a piece of work!

On the heels of the announcement that Sarah Palin has been signed on to be a commentator on Fox News, Matt Lauer put John McCain on the hot seat this morning in respect to allegations set forth in Harry Reid's (Senate Majority leader) just-published book that accuses the Senator of failing miserably in respect to the vetting of the VP hopeful.

The interchange became particularly hostile when Lauer pointedly inferred that Senator McCain didn't even bother to properly research Palin's background before selecting her as a running-mate.

When quizzed about the specifics, John McCain tried to weasle out of the dilemma, by flatly denying any knowledge of any action his staff may have taken in that regard.

"I wouldn't know," he shrugged, as he shifted uncomfortably in his perch on the set.

Lauer was so taken aback by the response, that he was inclined to probe further for additional answers.

"I am surprised," Lauer quipped.

"You were the presidential candidate."

In so many words, McCain proceeded to assert for the record that the former beauty Queen allegedly energized the party.

In addition, he beamed that he was not only proud of Sarah Palin, but proud of the campaign they waged.

In a bold-faced attempt to shut down the line of questioning, McCain was quite adamant that he wasn't going to Sunday morning quarterback at this juncture.

"I have no intention of looking back over what happened a year ago," he smugly retorted.

"I'm sorry, you'll have to get others to comment on it."

Maybe Lauer can dial in to Fox's "O'Reilly Factor" tonight and ask Palin directly, when she makes her first appearance as a news commentator for the controversial Fox network.

Las Vegas...Battle of the Bands! Rock 'n Roll at dawn, dudes...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

When I tossed open the curtain, and slid the window open wide bright and early this morning in my Hotel room, I was hit with a blast of rock 'n roll!

They start early in Vegas, don't they?

After showering, I took the elevator downstairs, and headed off for a morning cup of java.

Heh!

Was that Alice Cooper screaming the last few strains of the band's celebrated hit - "School's Out" - on the Freemont Street stage?

Shucks, missed capturing the classic little number on video.

But, lady luck was on my side.

"Are we allowed to do another song, "Alice" asked the stage manager in charge of the early morning riser.

Once that tidbit of dialogue fell on my ears, I snatched up my new HD Video Recorder just in time to catch an encore number in which "Alice" proceeded to tear off the head of a doll.

The truth of the matter?

The performance wasn't quite up to par.

Did "Alice" have a rough night, or what?

You got it!

Turns out, the musicians on stage were a Tribute Band!

The impromptu performance (and the one that followed that featured a Bon Jovi look-a-like) was a special promotion for the - "Battle of the Bands" (May 13th) - being taped for Fox News.

The teaser was being whipped up to throw the spotlight on a myriad of talented young musicians playing the strip in honky-tonks, casinos, and Hotel lounges around "sin" city in search of the elusive big break.
