Fame...do you know who that is? Dark glasses, please!

Who is that man?

This past week I was forced to make a difficult decision regarding my shopping habits.

As much as possible, I have always endeavoured to be humble and down-to-earth - and for that reason - have mixed-and-mingled with locals and tourists alike at retail outlets when I shop for my personal needs.

Notwithstanding, I have also found the daily interaction with others is a rewarding creative experience which fuels up the muse.

In a nutshell?

Quite a few of my posts are based on encounters that come my way throughout the course of the day.

Unfortunately, it has become difficult to blend in with the common "Joe" in recent days since I appear to stick out like a sore thumb wherever I go!

For instance, shortly after I queue up at the cash register to pay for my purchases, customers all around me start to whisper.

Gosh, If I hear - "Do you know who that is?" - one more time - I'll scream!

Well, probably not.

Dave Letterman said it best one night on his talk show.

The popular host was out for dinner a short while ago, and for some inexplicable reason, was overlooked by the waiting staff on duty in the trendy restaurant.

After about an hour of waiting patiently with his date (wife?) a staff member waltzed up to the table and proceeded to quiz Mr. Letterman about his order.

"Would you care for some dessert now, Sir?"

"I haven't had my first course, yet," he responded politely (though boiling with rage underneath the surface no doubt).

In spite of the glaring oversight, Mr. Letterman noted to his studio audience, that he was forced to remain silent instead of complaining (for obvious reasons).

"If I said something it would be all over the tabloids."

Uh-huh!

The caption would read something like this:

"Dave Letterman throws hissy-fit in chic New York restaurant."

In my instant case, I have opted to shop elsewhere in out-of-the-way locales, in view of the growing problem.

Just maybe, I'll come up with a good disguise in the near future, though.

Someone famous (I forget who just now) was also bang on when he (or she) once quipped:

"People spend all their lives struggling to become famous. Then, slip on dark glasses when they achieve the goal, to hide who they are!"

Amen!

James Franco...obtains rights to Sal Mineo book! Screen bio in works?

Sal Mineo played both sides of fence sexually!

Folks in West Hollywood are familiar with two facts about actor Sal Mineo

For starters, there were whispers that Sal Mineo walked a tight-rope when it came to his sexual prowess.

Some say, for instance, that he was a wild child - with a hunger for kinky sex - who  played both sides of the fence.

Subsequently, there were quite a few rumors - and alot of outright speculation - that Sal Mineo and screen heart-throb James Dean often liked to tango.

The tales about James Dean weren't new to me.

For a brief period, I rented a small apartment at 1236 N. Harper in West Hollywood, which was known to have been a residence for a handful of luminaries in the business back in the fifties.

For instance, Katherine Hepburn allegedly rented the front suite for a couple of years, before she moved on to larger digs west in Beverly Hills and beyond.

And, the one-bedroom apartment next door was a respite from it all - neighbours have sworn up-and-down about it,  in fact - that James Dean once hung his hat there before he sauntered back east to study acting and pursue serious roles more fervently.

The suites were known for their deep walk-in closets which fueled alot of titillating gossip, too.

It has been rumored that Dean, for instance, engaged in "S & M" romps behind those heavy wooden doors with a posse of actor friends during the heady days of his budding career.

Curiously, several years ago, I crossed paths - and became friends with - an Englishman by the name of Lawrence (Larry) Parnes.

Mr. Parnes, among other things, was not only credited for having discovered the English Pop Singer - Tommy Steele - but was also known to have managed the Beatles when they were the Silver Beatles.

The fab four later became Internationally famous around the globe after signing up with Manager Brian Epstein - who essentially launched their careers - after scooping them up from under Parne's nose.

I mention Parnes in this post in reference to Sal Mineo & James Dean because apparently (while on a trip to America with his parents way back in the 50's) Mr. Parnes crossed paths with - and had a torrid affair with - actor James Dean.

Indeed!

A few years ago - while visiting Mr. Parnes on his estate in the quaint little English town of Rye (coincidientally, he resided on an old country road just down the way from McCartney at the time) he confided to me that he had savored a clandestine affair with Dean way back when.

Allegedly, the impressario (a teen at the time) was strolling along a Los Angeles Street one day on his own - when he spied a handsome young man standing in front of a bar - who gave him a wink and motioned him over for a chat.

"Can I buy 'ya a drink," the rugged dude asked out-of-the-blue.

"But, I'm under age," was Parne's rueful reply.

"That's okay. The bartender is a friend of mine," the  handsome hunk chuckled, as they strolled inside the dark environs of the smokey little watering hole to down an ale or two.

Uh-huh.

The stud was none other than James Dean!

One thing apparently led to another - at which point - Parnes found himself in the sack with Dean.

Although Larry didn't provide any details - he didn't infer by a long shot - that any kind of  S & had gone down on the occasion of their roll-in-the-hay.

So, as to the rumors about Dean - and his alleged hunger for kinky sex (cigarette burns) - I can not attest to whether they are true or not.

An interesting bit of scuttlebutt, though, when one considers the rumors about the two actors - Mineo and Dean - who worked side-by-side on the set of "Rebel Without a Cause".

Bottom line?

What intrigues does James Franco intend to pursue in respect to the Sal Mineo film bio?

Dennis Hopper...honored with Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame! Legal battle complicates life...

Dennis Hopper, the legendary actor who worked with screen heavyweights - Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean in George Steven's sprawling Western saga - "Giant" - appeared frail and under-the-weather in Hollywood earlier today when he was honored with a star on the celebrated Walk of Fame.

Life is complicated at the moment for the seasoned pro, who has been a mainstay on the Hollywood film scene, for over 50 golden years.

Mr. Hopper is currently being treated for prostate cancer and is said to be terminally ill.

I reported on the nasty turn in the actor's health when he was first rushed to emergency a few months ago.

Post:   11/01/09

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/11/dennis-hoppernews-update-actor-has-been.html

Since that time, Mr. Hopper has been receiving care at a medical facility specializing in the treatment of prostate cancer.

In the interim, his estranged wife stepped up divorce proceedings, which has placed additional mental and emotional strain on the actor ( no doubt).

Although doctors nixed efforts on the part of his former spouse to haul the ailing actor into a deposition hearing - in respect to matters pertaining to the divorce battle that has been raging on in the local courts non-stop - the physican was inclined to give a nod to the outing on Hollywood Boulevard with the ultimate aim of boosting Hopper's overall morale.

Hopper arrived just before 11:30 a.m. and was spied smiling and shaking hands with guests of note before taking his seat in front of the Egyptian Theatre.

Last year, I met Mr. Hopper on the red carpet at the CineVegas Film Festival in Las Vegas, and he was gracious enough to grant me an interview.

After that auspicious premiere event, I often mixed and mingled with Mr. Hopper at various film festival events during the course of its run.

A gentleman and a scholar.

Not many of us left!

Get well soon, Mr. Hopper!

West Hollywood...friendship! Shallow people need not apply...

The ultimate recluse rich enough to pull it off!

Hughes idle hours spent designing bra with proper lift and thrust!

One of the things that annoys me most are people who are shallow and insincere.

And, inconsistency takes the cake.

I have resided in the West Hollywood area for over twenty years - and during that time - have come to recognize that the tiny incorporated city is pretty much a transient place.

This is partly due to the nature of the entertainment-industry beast!

For example, Hollywood wannabees - actors, singers, dancers - take the long trek out to Tinsel Town to pursue their dream of stardom and fame.

Subsequently, they often settle in neighborhoods central to the hub of the biz, such as WeHo.

Then, for the next year or so, the old-timers spot them around town as they try to settle in and acclimatize themselves to the West Coast scene

One day, a larger percentage of the disillusioned will either jump off a cliff  in frustration when their dreams don't pan out, skulk back to Oklahoma a dismal failure (a cliche, I know), or move lock-stock-and-barrel  to Silver Lake never to be seen hide-nor-tail-of again.

Over the years, folks like me, stayed and established roots.

Likewise, during that time frame, I also began to acknowledge others who did the same.

Indeed!

When a familiar face crosses your path a few times a week (at the grocery store, the pharmacy, while strolling along the street) you're inclined to smile, nod politely, or even utter hello.

Once I personally acknowledge someone, or strike up a bond of-sorts, I am in for the long haul.

When it comes to friendship - in particular - I can be depended on.

Here's what a few notables have said about friendship:

"Life is partly what we make it, and partly what is made by the friends whom we choose."
Tehyi Hsieh

"A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Books, like friends, should be few and well chosen."
Samuel Paterson

"A friend hears the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails."
Anonymous author

So, with that foremost in mind, please note for the record that  those who consider striking up an acquaintance with me should be aware of one thing.

I expect loyalty and "consistency" in my associations with people (on whatever level).

Cross me (or stab me in the back) and you're banished!

After all, I'm not a masochist.

I'd rather have a circle of tight-knit friends consisting of three or four buddies I feel comfortable with (and can depend on) than a posse of phony (superficial) pals who are wish-washy and not one ounce of loyalty in their fickle bones.

I don't kknow if it is the uncertainty of the times - or simply due to a lack of manners (and an inability to connect and effectively communicate) - but I have found that in WeHo (and in Los Angeles in general) that  folks have a problem being sincere, following through, and committing in respect to relationships.

For instance, on occasion I have been walking down the street or glancing over a newspaper in a cafe - when a local resident (who I have crossed paths with dozens of times for months on end) - suddenly breaks into a smile and gives me a nod.

No, I don't perceive that as a signal to saunter over to their table, and pursue a hot affair in-between-the- sheets.

I like to think that a connection (acknowledgement) has been made - though - which may (or may not) pan out into a meaningful friendship.

So, I tend to take a mental note.

Next time, I will make a point of acknowledging that individual, also.

After all, isn't that how bonds develop with neighbours and strangers?

One guy I started saying hi to over the past year proved to be such a flake!

One minute he would wave hi - the next - ignore me.

Sorry, dude, I require consistency in my interactions with people.

Once there is a snub (is that what it is, or is the person just too stupid to recall the people he or she has been acknowledging for weeks on end?) I drop them like a hot potato.

And, I run away from immature a**holes who play games, like they have the plague.

I've got better things to do than try to fathom out the intent of a gaggle of losers who don't have a clue about friendship (or life in general) from the get-go (though it is usually staring them nakedly in the face).

To be honest with you - as far as I am concerned - the eyes are the windows of the soul.

In the final analysis, I'm not inclined to let just any jerk-off stare into mine, for heaven's sake.

I'll save (and cherish) that special moment for a deserving like-minded-soul similar in spirit to moi!

So, kiss off  'ya Hollywood phonies, I want nothing to do with low-life slugs like you.

And, that goes for  ambitious social climbers who toil away on take-out counters and cash registers at - CVS, Starbucks, Rite-Aid, Pavillions - wherever!

Just ring up the items, bag 'em, and fork over my change (without any goo-goo eyes) please.

No wonder Brando, James Dean, and Howard Hughes were recluses.

In fact - even Greta Garbo's lament - makes sense to me now.

"I want to be left alone!"

Amen!

Greta Garbo avoided trappings of fame!

Brando intensely private & retiring off-screen!

Dirty Pretty Things...Russell Young art exhibition in San Francisco! Stardust portraits of Marilyn & Marlon...

On Gallery row a splashy show of paintings titled Dirty Pretty Things screams out at tourists as they hustle to the theatre just down the strip to catch a production of Phedre.

The Russeck Gallery is featuring about a dozen-or-so unique portraits of - Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Marlon Brando - with a clever twist to them.

The fairly well-known images (some coined from Warhol's well of creativity) are sprinkled with a handful of glittering stardust.

On the promotional blurb, a particularly eye-catching shot of the "Some Like it Hot" star is labelled:

"Double Marilyn"

The whimsical portrait is 62 inches by 96 inches and was crafted on linen (a screen print) in acrylic paint, enamel, and diamond dust.

The artist - Russell Young - resides in Los Angeles and is well-known for his video adventures.

Twenty years ago the British photographer first lent his searing lens to celebrity culture.

The assignment was to capture pop idol George Michael in a publicity still for the album “Faith”.

Soon Russell became renowned for his stylish photographic studies of stand-out musicians such as  Morrissey, Springsteen, and Dylan.

In its heyday, Russell directed a hundred music videos for pop culure phenomenon,  MTV.

Russell started painting about ten years ago, but was shy about exhibiting his musings.

When Young unveiled - PIG PORTRAITS - the pieces  were immediately snapped up by collectors, friends, and business associates.

Today, the talented man is touted as an internationally acclaimed pop artist, who creates larger-than-life silkscreen paintings of images from history and pop culture (such as the ones currently on exhibit at the Russeck Gallery in San Francisco).

“My work is sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. My method of working is to search, destroy and create. The images of this series have been collected from newspaper cuttings, e-bay, long correspondence with police departments throughout the world or even given by celebrities themselves. The idea to create "anti-celebrity" portraits was probably a reaction to my former career. However, they turned out to be even more beautiful and iconic. There is undeniably this attitude that is very real, in your face, a beauty that is hard to ignore. My art is a sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. These would be my heroes that are missing from Art History.”

Die-hard fans are undoubtedly aware that Russell is married to actress Finola Hughes.

The loving couple have three children - Dylan, Cash and Sadie - who trot back and forth with their celebrated parents between homes situated  in New York and Los Angeles.

The dazzling paintings at the Russeck currently - which would heighten the mood in any tony dining-room in a NYC penthouse suite or Bel Air manse - don't come cheap.

Prices start @ $19,000.00 a pop!
