Oscars...tongue-tied actors coached on speech-making!

Didn't 'ya want to slap sense into Paltrow?

If you're ever found the Oscars to be a big yawn - and you've been inclined to channel surf away from the segments Hitchcock might refer to as the "boring bits" - you may want to stay glued to the glam broadcast this year to ensure you don't miss any memorable moments.

After all, the glitzy show-biz extravaganza is expected to zip along this year - in part, due - to the cheeky efforts of the producers.

At a tony luncheon yesterday in Beverly Hills to honor the nominees, actors were coached on the fine art of speech-making to help 'em along at the exciting proceedings this year at the Kodak Theatre (except for actor Colin Firth, of course, who is ably prepared in the event he has to scramble up to the podium to accept a coveted Golden Statuette).

Tips were offered up on how to deliver a touching heart-warming thank-you speech - within the forty-five second time limit - without fumbling and coming off like a amateurish jerk-off before the teaming masses around the globe come February 27th.

For example, producers cautioned performers about facilitating a scrap of paper to recall a laundry list rife with names of folks to thank (or using the palm of their hand for cheat notes).

Strictly taboo!

Just ask Sarah Palin.

To prompt the prime Grade A cattle along, a state-of-the-art indicator has also been installed on the front of the camera - to initiate a countdown - so unsuspecting thespians don't end up being yanked off stage with a hook (or cut off in the event irate sponsors cut to a commercial break).

For those who aren't a quick study, an instruction DVD was provided, for future reference.

So, if a handful of the speeches sound alike - or lack spontaneity or spark - you'll be able to fathom why.

You can't teach an old ham new tricks, after all!

Hurt Locker...Producer banned from Oscars! Trivia fodder for game shows...

Nicolas Chartier (2nd left) & Hurt Locker crew!

Just a couple of days ago, I reported that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences was pondering what action to take against one of the producers of  "The Hurt Locker" (Nicolas Chartier) for violating Academy rules.

Post:  02/26/10

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/02/hurt-lockerdisqualified-from-oscars.html

Chartier e-mailed several hundred promotional teasers to friends, family, and business associates - of which, a few were Academy Members - urging Oscar enthusiasts to turn their backs on Avatar (which he referred to as the "$500 million dollar movie") - and vote for "Hurt Locker" instead (directed by talented Kathryn Bigelow).

The unprecedented slight caused a furor at the Academy where officials of the prestigious organization quickly discussed potential remedies to punish the upstart who cast a pall in the 11th hour of the Oscar race.

According to academy rules, members are barred from participating in negative campaigns against filmmakers in the running for the coveted Golden Statuette affectionately known as the "Oscar".

Over the weekend, when the disturbing news first broke, the Academy was considering pulling Bigelow's offering from the line up of nominated features as punishment and to deter such conduct in the future by Academy Members.

However, yesterday it was announced that disciplinary action would be focused solely on the culprit in question, Nicolas Chartier.

In a press release Tuesday, the Academy announced that Chartier would be barred from attending the Oscar celebrations on March 7th at the Kodak Theatre in the heart of Hollywood.

The naughty producer's tickets were revoked, and he was summarily notified - as well - that he would not be able to attend as a guest of any attendee either.

In sum, Nicolas Chartier has the dubious distinction of being the first nominee to have ever been banned from attending the Oscars.

In due time, Chartier (and the incident) will obviously be reduced to Oscar trivia on TV game shows and the like for decades to come.

Is Chartier the first to go down in the halls of  Oscar infamy?

Well, he's in good company - right up there with Brando's Oscar misstep in 1977 - and alongside a handful of  botched acceptance speeches that didn't gel well with audiences over the years.

Dirty Pretty Things...Russell Young art exhibition in San Francisco! Stardust portraits of Marilyn & Marlon...

On Gallery row a splashy show of paintings titled Dirty Pretty Things screams out at tourists as they hustle to the theatre just down the strip to catch a production of Phedre.

The Russeck Gallery is featuring about a dozen-or-so unique portraits of - Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Marlon Brando - with a clever twist to them.

The fairly well-known images (some coined from Warhol's well of creativity) are sprinkled with a handful of glittering stardust.

On the promotional blurb, a particularly eye-catching shot of the "Some Like it Hot" star is labelled:

"Double Marilyn"

The whimsical portrait is 62 inches by 96 inches and was crafted on linen (a screen print) in acrylic paint, enamel, and diamond dust.

The artist - Russell Young - resides in Los Angeles and is well-known for his video adventures.

Twenty years ago the British photographer first lent his searing lens to celebrity culture.

The assignment was to capture pop idol George Michael in a publicity still for the album “Faith”.

Soon Russell became renowned for his stylish photographic studies of stand-out musicians such as  Morrissey, Springsteen, and Dylan.

In its heyday, Russell directed a hundred music videos for pop culure phenomenon,  MTV.

Russell started painting about ten years ago, but was shy about exhibiting his musings.

When Young unveiled - PIG PORTRAITS - the pieces  were immediately snapped up by collectors, friends, and business associates.

Today, the talented man is touted as an internationally acclaimed pop artist, who creates larger-than-life silkscreen paintings of images from history and pop culture (such as the ones currently on exhibit at the Russeck Gallery in San Francisco).

“My work is sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. My method of working is to search, destroy and create. The images of this series have been collected from newspaper cuttings, e-bay, long correspondence with police departments throughout the world or even given by celebrities themselves. The idea to create "anti-celebrity" portraits was probably a reaction to my former career. However, they turned out to be even more beautiful and iconic. There is undeniably this attitude that is very real, in your face, a beauty that is hard to ignore. My art is a sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. These would be my heroes that are missing from Art History.”

Die-hard fans are undoubtedly aware that Russell is married to actress Finola Hughes.

The loving couple have three children - Dylan, Cash and Sadie - who trot back and forth with their celebrated parents between homes situated  in New York and Los Angeles.

The dazzling paintings at the Russeck currently - which would heighten the mood in any tony dining-room in a NYC penthouse suite or Bel Air manse - don't come cheap.

Prices start @ $19,000.00 a pop!
