School's out for Summer!...Childhood Memories of Happy Hollow! Ontario!

When a local news anchor's co-host ceremoniously announced yesterday afternoon that school was out for summer, the dude was beside himself over the prospect.

"OMG," he lamented right-off-the-bat, to all within earshot.

"Now, when I zip over to the local pool to swim my daily laps, I am going to have to deal with all those screaming kids," he lamented in so many words!

His gal pal chortled in response, as she noted with a touch of glee in her voice, that he was just going to have to "deal with it".

"Well, as long as they stay out of my lap lane," he groused, before they signed off.

The whole drama that unfolded triggered memories of my own youth.

When I resided just outside of Oshawa (Ontario) when I was about eleven or twelve years old, all the local kids would sprint down to a natural pond (that grew out of a lazy little creek that ebbed and flowed in the nearby woods) at the height of the summer season.

The kids appropriately nick-named the quaint little swimming hole "Happy Hollow".

Whenever I get nostalgic for the past, that one memory looms large in my mind, for sure!

Oh, the sweet bird of youth!

Dark Secrets...seduced by older sister playing Doctor! The healing process is painful!

For the first time in years, I suddenly recalled an unpleasant memory from my childhood, which unexpectedly loomed large in my consciousness yesterday afternoon.

Out-of-the-blue one day, about fifty years ago, my older sister lured me in to her bedroom to play "Doctor".

For some inexplicable reason, the almost-surreal fleshy images of "Doreen" naked on the bed - urging me to stroke her vagina - triggered a flood of emotions difficult to wrestle with.

Perhaps, it was the confession of a Senator (who was sexually assaulted when he was a youth) that jolted the sick memories loose from the inner reaches of my mind - to the upper realms of my waking consciousness now.

Just maybe, I've unknowingly been scarred by the seduction for decades, oblivious to their negative impact on my overall psyche or even my day-to-day personal and professional relationships.

And, what of my self-esteem!

Was it adversely affected, too, without my knowledge?

The cloud that looms over me now has caused me to reflect - and seek healing - in a bid to free myself of the shackles that once bound me 'til now.

Meanwhile, in spite of the fact I was separated from my family when I was about ten or eleven years old, my sister contacted me recently to strike up ties once again after stumbling on my blog on the Internet.

When I failed to respond to her urgent messages, she fired off an angry response.

"I am your sister, you know."

Personally, I feel that just because you are born into a family, does not mean you are required to remain in that family circle, or carry on a charade.

Notwithstanding, God took me by the hand, and led me down another path long ago.

In the final analysis, I hope that parents will teach their children to be careful not to overstep their bounds, or betray a sacred family trust.

Amen!

Justin Bieber...not tweeting gets handler arrested! NBC anchor shocked...

A News Anchor on NBC TV, just moments ago, said it best.

"What is the world coming to when you get arrested for NOT tweeting!"

His cohorts on the News desk let out a roar of laughter.

But, in a nutshell, that is what happened to the manager of teen sensation, Justin Bieber.

I have to back up a moment, though,

If you recall, I penned a profile on the teen sensation Justin Bieber over the weekend.

In that post, I casually mentioned that the Police threatened to arrest the pop star, if he tried to enter a shopping mall after an unprecendented number of fans swarmed the retail outlet potentially endangering all in attendance.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/03/justin-bieberfans-chase-pop-idol-down.html

Although the men in blue stopped short of that over-the-top threat in respect to Justin Bieber - in an about-face - they elected to file charges against his manager (Scott "Scooter" Braun)  - for failing to take prompt action when requested to do so on the day of the incident in November.

Allegedly, Braun was expected to cancel the appearance when it was evident that things had gotten out of hand.

When the gutsy handler failed to acknowledge - and instead - posted a tweet on Justin's visible online Tweet account noting that he was "on his way" to Roosevelt Field Mall (to meet and greet fans) it became crystal clear to law enforcement that he was thumbing his nose at them.

In fact, Police Officials have asserted that the willful act encouraged a throng of fans to continue to journey on and congregate at the mall , thus making a dangerous situation worse.

Today, Mr. Braun turned himself into authorities in NYC, and  was summarily  booked on charges of reckless endangerment and acts of criminal nuisance arising from the frenzied incident.

In response, the manager's attorney has stated for the record - that contrary to the allegations - his client responded in a timely manner (within ten minutes).

Subsequently, a formal request is being made to authorities, to reopen the investigation.

There are many reasons why a young man, not familiar with the law, may have been slow to respond.

When "Scooter" was  asked to shut down the concert, perhaps he wanted to seek some legal advice from his lawyer first, to ascertain what action to take.

Maybe, he was afraid to respond.

Interacting with police, without benefit of counsel, can be a risky proposition.

A hard copy of a tweet may end up being a piece of evidence in a trial proceeding, after all.

Braun's attorney explains away the delay with a shrug.

"Absent Scooter having a Superman's cape, he couldn't have done it any faster," attorney Ravi Batra told NBC newsies in New York.

"As a result of his (Braun's) lawful compliance with police instruction, [we believe the D.A.] will dismiss the charges after reopening the investigation."

Needless to say, Braun has entered a plea of not guilty.

On the sidelines, many are shaking their heads.

Is Bieber's manager just not on the ball, or the only 29-year-old without a smart phone in his pocket, some had wondered aloud.

In contrast, as I reported in my post (link above), Justin Bieber is a "smart" kid, keen on his responsibilities to his fans.

When a mob of excited teenyboppers hounded his car as he was exiting a parking lot at recording studio late last week,, he quickly tweeted a message to his fan base requesting that they step away from the vehicle so no one would get hurt.

Exemplary conduct, Justin.

Boomer needs to take a cue from you, kid!

Oh, baby!

Memories of my youth...Tom Sawyer style! Tragic loss of childhood friend...

On occasion memories drift back to my youth in the West End of Toronto at about age five or six.

I smile when it dawns on me - that in some respects a handful of my childhood adventures with a neighborhood friend Johnny French - were not disimilar in nature to those experienced by Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

Granted, ours were deep within the wilds of the city (Hog Town), but were just as impacting on our impressionable young minds.

In essence, our excursions into the uncertain realms beyond the perimeters of our humble run-down neighborhood, were the bold-faced efforts of two boys to brave the man-made elements (with the ultimate aim of coming to terms with their place in the grand scheme of things).

Just behind our row of doll-size houses, a stretch of railroad track - and a huge tact of overgrown undeveloped city property - beckoned us each waking hour.

When the opportunity arose, Johnny and I would slink away, and take advantage of its bounty.

One of our favorite past-times was to sneak onto the railway line and hop from one tie to the next - as we kept an eagle eye open - for treasures along the way.

Once, we stumbled across a crate full of oranges, which we summarily dragged home (only to be accused of stealing the succulent offerings from a storage facility to our great dismay).

Sometimes we were so engrossed in our fantasies on the tracks - that we failed to anticipate foes that might creep up on us unawares - while our backs were not up.

For example, one carefree morning we were marvelling at a pile of beautifully-charred  rocks by the tracks, when a serviceman for the railroad suddenly appeared out of nowhere on a curious-looking device that rolled along as he pumped a handle up-and-down in the middle of it.

"Heh, you kids! Get outta here. This is private property," he hollered from his lofty perch on the trolley as he sped towards us at breakneak speed flailing his hands and gesturing for us to get out of harm's way.

The most exciting adventures were beneath the very earth.

One day, we happened to spy an opening in the side of a steep hill, where an ocassional puff of steam issued forth from the mysterious depths below.

After a quick look-see, we soon discovered an underground world, that consisted of endless tunnels (it seemed) that stretched into the darkness here there and eveywhere to Kingdom Come (I surmised).

Johnny and I were bent on exploring and conquering each and every one.

Not a simple or easy task.

For starters, there usually was a foot or two of sewer water rushing along on the floor of the slippery tunnel floor - and the smell was enough to knock 'ya out on occasion (in spite of the fact we tried to block out the burning fumes that made our noses water and our eyes smart with kleenex).

Once, I got my pant leg caught on a nail, and ended up with a gaping hole in the flimsy fabric from ankle to knee.

In one section of an empty field, where bushy shrubs and wild flowers reached up to the sky in all their lazy glory, we'd occasionally spy a band of hoboes napping under one or two of the grand old shade trees.

The Hollyhocks fascinated me in particular, as did a myriad of intriguing wild flowers, that dotted the terrain as far as the eye could see.

An old mill, about a mile or so to the south, was another exciting  place for our imaginations to run rampant.

In a rusty old bin one day, Johnny and I found a raft of boxes which contained mixes for cakes and muffins, just left to rot.

Delighted with our find, we hauled a handful of them home, only to be told (in disgust) that the food stuffs had been tossed into the garbage because they were contaminated or spoiled due to expired dates.

Then, as I noted in a post a few weeks ago, a social worker arrived on my mother's doorstep one day, unexpectedly.

Suddenly, my whole world changed, literally over-night.

In one adventurous moment, I was playing alongside Johnny, in the next I was being whisked off to the suburbs to be placed in a foster home.

Unfortunately, I would never see Johnny again, because of a tragedy that struck.

Gramma and Poppa and I were sitting at breakfast one morning when they awkwardly pointed to a news item that was published in the daily paper.

The headline noted that a family - by the name of  "French" - was  burned to death in a devastating fire in the West End of Toronto the previous evening.

Once the investigation was completed, the authorities determined the shocking truth.

Johnny's family home has been condemned by the City inspector months earlier.

Rather than board up the house - or renovate at considerable expense - the landlord simply pasted over the eviction notice and rented the property to the French's.

All thirteen family members died in the tragic blaze triggered by an faulty electrical outlet.

Although I choked up at first, for some reason, I found it difficult to cry.

In fact, it was not until many years later, that I was able to express my emotions over the loss of my best friend.

The only person I'd ever been that close to in my life had been snatched away without mercy.

Why, God, why?

Michael Phelps...smoking a doobie tough to fess up to!

Michael Phelps has been keeping a relatively low profile since he "bombed" big time over a dope-smoking incident at a University campus last fall.

Amid quite a bit of hoopla - the Olympic Gold Medalist turned up at NBC at the crack of dawn this morning - ready to fess up - right?

Well, kinda.

In his first appearance on a major network talk show since the scandal hit, "Today" talk-show host Matt Lauer tried reaching for the brass ring, but fell short.

As much as the smooth broadcaster tried, it was a difficult task pinning the twenty-something stud down, in so many words.

For instance, when Lauer asked Phelps point blank if he smoked dope, America's once-shining hero avoided fessing up with a definitive "yes".

"It was a big mistake," he admitted somewhat painfully.

"It"?

For those who were clueless (duh!) he clarified his evasive response a smidgen.

"And, we all know what I am talking about."

Tough to chew on, when you consider that the celebrated Olympic Gold Medalist's strokes are always so precise.

Just remember one thing at this stage of the game, Michael.

The truth will set you free!
