Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Special...Brad Paisley a stand-out! Poor Direction! Beyonce's bad-hair day!

For the most part, the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks special last night on NBC was solid entertainment.

In particular, Country & Western Star - Brad Paisley - was a stand-out in a performance that left audiences crying out for an encore!

The kid was charismatic and exuded a good-time quality that resonated with fans below the footlights, too.

Unfortunately, Beyonce was having a "bad hair" day and it was downright distracting.

The frazzled "do" (did she fall asleep under the hair-dryer or what?) was replete with tacky dark roots and dry wispy fly-away ends that took flight this-way-and-that whenever the wind whipped across the stage (which was often).

On the other hand, the chanteuse wisely elected to don a chic understated designer gown, which she aaccessorized tastefully with a stunning necklace - that ultimately - flattered her long graceful neck.

One tune was surprisingly just so-so!

But, the Pop Diva's high-energy performance managed to prevent the entire set from fizzling out before our very eyes, in spite of the odds against it.

No problem there in respect to the spectacular pyrotechnics which were literally dazzling in scope.

The musical arrangements laid-in beneath the stunning visuals triggered a stream of consciousness - for me, anyway -which couldn't help but usher up a flood of emotions (patriotic ones, for starters) and reflection.

Unfortunately, the production values were spotty.

Pedestrian direction (and poor camera-work) diminished the special event to amateurish proportions on occasion.

For example, when Nick Lachey (the host for the evening's festivities) attempted to introduce the broadcast at the top of the show, his  voice was drowned out by a spirited gang of guests at his side who squealed with delight as soon as the director called "action" from behind the NBC camera.

A seasoned pro would have anticipated the obvious.

For good reason, the director should have instructed the attendees to remain on the sidelines silently until Mr. Lachey delivered up his intro without interruption, and for the benefit of the viewing audience at home.

A raucous cheer at the end of Lachey's show-opener would have been the professional way to go!

Sadly, the niggling dilemma continued throughout the broadcast and was annoying as heck.

I was also surprised that the musical director failed to issue a note to the performer who elected to go into "uncharted waters" in respect to the rather uneven rendition of "Amazing Grace".

To me, the artistic choices were so jarring, that they reminded me of the irritating sounds fingernails dredge up on a blackboard.

Oh, well!

In spite of the shortcomings, Paisley came up smelling roses with a 4-star performance.

Later!

Justin Timberlake...to rustle up dollars with scents! "Play Intense" seductive Givenchy tribute to star...

Trusting that their instincts about the seductive allure of Justin Timberlake are right on, Givenchy signed the pop sensation to tout two scents under their prestigious perfumery label.

"We were looking for a man who's recognized all over the world, someone new to the world of perfumery, and with great seductive potential," noted Pamela Baxter, the President and CEO of LVMH Perfumes (who also wears a second hat as President & CEO of Christian Dior, Inc.).

More succinctly, she gushed:

"Most importantly we needed to find a man who could embody the modern elegance specific to the Givenchy brand as well as all the facets of "Play".

"Play" and "Play Intense" (foreplay & "in like Flynn"?) have all the overtones of an erotic sexual adventure - with a little bit of kink tossed in - if you ask moi.

To think I've been splashing down with a cheap cologne on a rustic woodsy end of the spectrum.

But, I was on the right smell track, though.

According to Alain Lorenzo, wood (preferably a stiff one!) is the key.

"We told the perfumers to take the Caribbean amyris wood note and make one scent, which is more polarizing (!) and one which is more accessible ("in like Flynn", told 'ya so), " he noted matter-of-fact without batting-an-eye or smirking just once.

At least Americans were spared the humiliation of being guinea pigs when the "play intense" perfume experiment revved up.

"Because the U.S. is one of our largest markets , we wanted to work out any kinks in "Play" before bringing it to the U.S."

Well, Givenchy can start with Timberlake's hair, if they're truly sincere about snatching up any potential problems by the short-and-curlies come fall when the splashy advertising campaign (shot by Tom Munro) will break into September magazines around the country.

"Play" will land in select retail outlets wrapped-to-perfection in aestheticaly-pleasing white outer-foil, while "Play Intense" will make a seductive entrance in black (symbolic of the dark side of man's nature, get it?) .

Since "Play Intense" sold twenty percent above plan in the U.K., Givenchy is expecting the much-anticipated scent to sky-rocket on these shores when it hits the shelves at retail outlets such as Macy's, Nordstrom's, Dillard's, and Sephora when autumn leaves fall.

Executives were sly when it came to predicting sales, but hinted that industry analysts in-the-know have been forecasting $15 million in sales over the counter the 1st year.

That's a lot of nose candy, eh?

Heck, I'm in the wrong business.

Tell 'ya a funny story.

I was in an elevator one day, when a classy well-heeled woman turned in my direction, and quizzed me about the cologne I was wearing.

"Obsession?" she slyly winked.

Gosh, it hit me like a lightning bolt.

I didn't spritz on anything that day before I dashed out the door for an intense (there's that word again) work-out at the gym.

"Eau de Julian," I quickly reslponded, with barely a straight face.

Heck, I could bottle my body scent, and a make a bloody fortune on eBay.

Folks, ready for some foreplay - or should we just go for the main course - straight away?

Givenchy, watch your sexy back!

Menswear...sweaters saunter into fall! Fashion 08!

Sweaters saunter into the picture big this fall as the brisk night air descends on the city's mean streets.

There's a bumper crop of styles to choose from.

For example, cable knits, silky blends, and plain old practical cottons.

Elegant sweater-vests are crowd-pleasers this season. 'Specially those that sidle up to pristine dress shirts, a scintillating array of tasteful ties, and classic sport coats in Navy or Camel Hair.

But, anything goes!

The overwear fashion accent not only makes an entrance in stripes of all persuasions, but jazzy eye-catching patterns that jolt the senses.

The silhouettes are bulky, oversize, and comfy.

Great for layering!

Give it the college try with a bold textured scarf, slouchy hat, and one-of-a kind knit gloves that signal a discerning fashion touch.
