The Big Lebowski...podcast commentary track feature! Fans catch the wave!

My pals at the Big Lebowski podcast site were in touch yesterday to inform me that now - after 4 years of struggling with the idea of installing a "commentary" track - the webmasters have accomplished the feat!

"The Coen Brothers were not big into DVD extras and special features or even commentary featuring tracks with industry insiders such as directors, editors, crew members, cinematographers, whomever," according to Chalupa, one of the developers at the Big Lebowski podcast site.

After scouring the Internet for novel tools to facilitate their end goal, they came away empty-handed.

So, Chalupa, Larry (a local film critic), and Mike (a film podcaster) laid down a commentary track piece-meal, after a lot of blood, sweat, and tears were shed (no doubt).

"We did this all in one take with zero edits, other than to chop a little off the beginning and the end. This is made with the idea you will either synchronize this track with the DVD - or mute your TV while listening - Chapula proudly noted in his e-mail communication to moi!

You can find the track in a few ways:

*Stream it from the episode listing page by clicking on this link:

http://lebowskipodcast.com/episode/episode-51-commentary-track.html

*Download it from the RSS feed and play it off a computer or other device

In the alternative, Chapula and the boys offer up this suggestion:

*Somehow break the DVD encryption & add our lovely voices as a "real" commentary track to your newly created DVD of The Big Lebowski.

They're pretty sure the latter approach is illegal (they joke in jest?).

By the way, the Big Lebowski boys are hoping you'll contribute notes in the way of feedback, etc.

See 'ya at the podcast site, eh?

The Big Lebowski...San Francisco tonight @ Metreon! Bowling, White Russians, & Cult hilarity!

When I cruised into the Metreon Theatre to catch "The American" yesterday, I spied a flyer for a regular weekly event now a popular mainstay every Friday night in the heart of the dynamic night-life of San Francisco.

The Big Lebowski
(Live on Stage)

In addition to a screening of the cult classic film, the show's presenters also offer up Bowling!

And, from what I understand, there is a cast of characters foot-loose in the theatre environs keeping the laughter to a fever pitch each week.

In Los Angeles, I attended a number of packed screenings at midnight under the auspices of the Insomniac Theatre (at the former Fairfax District Revival House on Beverly).

Amid a lot of fanfare - the 9th Annual Big Lebowski Fest pertaining to all things Lebowski (and the Dude, of course) - will roar into the forefront of cult classic phenomenons in WHY (Louisville)  this upcoming weekend commencing July 16th.

Lebowski-ites are keen to the fact I am a big fan and have posted clips on Insomniac Cinema screenings around the Los Angeles film terrain over the past year or two.

Fairfax Theater...future in jeopardy! Art Deco Society up in arms!

A couple of weeks ago when I sauntered up to take a gander at the features running currently at the Fairfax Theatre, I was taken aback to encounter a hastily-written note informing theatre-goers that the movie house - a mainstay in the community for over eighty years - was shut down due to water damage.

Unfortunately, the owner was a sly devil, who wasn't being entirely on the up-and-up with the community at large.

The Property owner - Alex Gorby - announced recently that the Fairfax (which was being operated by Regency Theatres) would remain closed indefinitely after suffering major damage during rainstorms this year.

"The landlord did not want to make the necessary repairs, so we had to terminate the lease," said Andrew Golin (VP of Regency Theatres).

"We are saddened by the closure."

In fact, the owner had no intention of throwing open the Theater doors, at all.

Gorby has proposed a mixed-use retail and residential project that would include 71 living units and and  224 underground parking spaces.

He has attempted to smooth the waters by asserting that he intends to maintain the theater's qaint historic Art Deco facade.

"The design is absolutely exquisite," his slick spokesman assured the media recently.

To some, that is not good enough.

John Thomas, of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, said vigorous efforts underfoot to save the  Fairfax are not just about architecture.

The Fairfax Theatre is woven into the fabric of the community, after all.

"We view the Fairfax not only as a historic treasure, but as a social and cultural treasure, given the role it has played in the Fairfax District for the past 80 years," said Hillsman Wright (who is the co-founder of the Los Angeles Historical Theatre Foundation).

Inside the classic revival movie house, there are exquisite Art Deco flourishes in all three theaters, that reflect the ture elegance and style of the era.

"It's much more than a physical structure," Wright added.

I suffer from insomnia, so I often took in screenings at the Insomniac Cinema.

The wild fun raucous events - packed to the rafters - are some of my most memorable moments in the neighborhood over the years.

Here's a sampling of a handful of posts on the midnight screenings at the witching hour.

Dazed & Confused to screen at Insomniac Cinema

One of my foster mothers (who gave me shelter in her perch on Point Grey in Vancouver when I was a teenage run-a-way) actually took in screenings there (and munched on popcorn) when she was a toddler.

Jeannie Kamins resided on Kings Road with her parents (her father was a respected doctor in the Los Angeles area) in the heart of picturesque West Hollywood at the basin of the Hollywood Hills long before I discovered the gay mecca in the seventies and before it was an Incorported gay city.

Jeannie actually played in the street in front of the famous Shindler house (which still stands today amid a tony configuration of upscale condos).

She'll be devastated to hear the news!

Neighbors joined preservationists and community activists in recent weeks to collect petition signatures and to celebrate the cinema's 80th birthday.

During World War II, the theater served as a rallying point for information, and fundraising for the district's thriving Jewish community.

It was often used for religious services and political and social events.

"It's in many ways part of the heart and soul of that neighborhood," one neighbour poignantly noted to a reporter.

"We came here as children. We had our first dates here. We courted our spouses here. We brought our children and grandchildren here," said Cliff Cheng (head of the West of Fairfax Neighbors Society).

The Fairfax has been nominated to become a Los Angeles historic-cultural monument.

Until then, the landlord's ambitious plans are on hold.

Stay tuned!

Jeff Bridges...Robert Duvall & actress Maggie Gyllenhaal @ Crazy Heart screening. LA Times Envelope offering sure-fire hit...

There were a few technical glitches, a candid moment or two, and surprises in store for theatre-goers who attended the Los Angeles Times "Envelope" screening of  "Crazy Heart" at the Landmark Theatre tonight in West Los Angeles.

Usually, when there is a sneak preview of a film, a director and/or actor (usually lower-down on the totem in co-star capacity) put in an appearance at a Q & A session held after the credits roll.

On this auspicious occasion, however, all the headlining actors (save for Colin Farrell), trekked onto the podium to meet & greet the excited audience.

Boy, did (they/we) hit the jackpot.

Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, and Maggie Gyllenhaal were all in tow - and open to the prospect of baring their creative souls to filmgoers - who proceeded to creep forward to the edge of their seats with the aim of catching every scrumptious detail.

In part - their rapt attention may have been due to the fact the live mics (to be facillitated by the illustrious trio in order to respond to the insightful questions fielded them by an LA Times interviewer - encountered some snafus.

When Jeff Bridges plucked up one microphone, for instance, it squealed wildly - and likewise - pierced the eardrums of everyone present in the plush theatre surroundings.

Ouch!

But - the minor annoyance was laughed off - mainly, due to the fact  - the issue was handled with such grace and aplomb.

When one of the composers (T Bone Burnett) suddenly found himself with two mics in hand - a two-fisted speaker, I guess - the humor (and absurdness) of it all struck a nerve in his funny bone.

So, he was inclined to play-act at juggling for a sec or two, then mug for the ticket-holders.

The audience roared.

"That's what happens when a newspaper organizes a film event," the host from the morning daily chuckled.

In a nutshell, the film - Crazy Heart - is a well-crafted tale about a Country & Western star on the skids touring sleazy whiskey joints around the country to make ends meet.

When "Bad" (his nickname) gets a stab at a second chance in life, the film kicks into high gear, and becomes a bit of a morality tale.

In spite of that, Crazy Heart, never crosses the line to become too preachy.

When the writer - Scott Cooper - was asked what inspired the story, he was quick on the uptake.

"Initially, I was thinking of Merle Haggard for the lead character. But, the rights were taken, and there would have been a few ex-wives to deal with," the fresh-faced writer noted for the record.

Like myself, a handful of folks in the audience thought of rugged Kris Kristofferson right away, when the character sprang to life on the wide screen.

Cooper confessed that "Bad" was a composite of Kristofferson, Haggard, and a couple of other trail-blazers from the old country-and-western musical genre of yesteryear.

A second cowboy singer - played by Colin Farrell - was not inspired by Billy Ray Cyrus, though, as some speculated (me!).

A Western star from Australia triggered that characterization.

"I grew up near the Blue Ridge Mountains raised on bluegrass. The music was in my marrow," Cooper revealed.

Not every scene turned up in the can to make the theatre rounds, however.

"One crucial scene ended up on the cutting room floor because I didn't have an agreement for the final cut," the disgruntled director quibbled with a tinge of angst in his voice.

Robert Duvall laughed in response.

"Scott here was known as "precious" on the set," he chided in a slightly amusing derogatory aside.

Ouch!

Scott, just remember, the only director who ever had final cut of any legitimate binding value in Hollywood, was the legendary film great Orson Welles (Citizen Kane).

After the fact, the studio suits made sure that "artists" (at the creative end of things) were relegated to the lowly level stature of mere cattle (with little say in the packaging and promotion of the "factory product") for good reason!

In "Crazy Heart", Jeff Bridges has turned in one of the most memorable performances of his entire career.

"The Big Lebowski" star inhabits the role - literally breathes life into the character with such remarkable ease -  that it will stagger the sensibilities of all filmgoers

Jeff's acting is seamless, believable, and downright rivetting.

Speaking of the Big Lebowski, the classic Coen Brothers film is still garnering a lot of attention at annual tribute Festivals and filling theatres at midnight screenings under the auspices of "Insomniac Cinema" around the country.

Post:

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/01/big-lebowskiscreens-at-insomniac-cinema.html

There is now a podcast airing weekly on the Internet in respect to all things "Dude-wise" & Big Lebowski favored.

Post:

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/02/big-lebowskipodcast-up-and-running-dude.html

In spite of the fact Scott Cooper alleged that he never screened "The Big Lebowski" - he only spied snatches of it here and there in previews on TV and that sort-of-thing over the years - the opening scene in "Crazy Heart" smacks of the one at the beginning of the Coen Brothers "Lebowski" feature (where the cowboy strides up to the bar and plunks himself down on a stool).

Uncanny.

In contrast to Bridges, I found Colin Farrell's acting to be a bit stilted - too external - for my taste.

Duvall - well, as always - he's the consummate professional.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was a total revelation, too.

The film resonated with me for a couple of reasons in particular.

For starters, early on in Crazy Heart, "Bad" laments his age.

OMG!

The character was the same age as moi.

But, the parallels got more intriguing.

For instance, at one point the Jeff Bridges character is barrelling down the highway, when he falls asleep at the wheel of his suburban.

I sat bolt upright in my seat.

A few months ago, I noted in a post that on the way back from Vegas, I nodded off on a quiet stretch of highway.

Fortunately, when the wheels hit the shoulder - and the ride subsquently got quite bumpy - I was jolted awake and managed to steer the out-of-control SUV back onto the pavement without mishap.

Later, I determined after a test at a sleep clinic, that I suffer from a disorder which I now take a prescription for to alleviate.

And, there were a couple of other aspects of the storyline that also rang true with me (which I'll pass on discussing at this point in time for personal reasons).

Needless to say, the movie-going experience was a very real - thought-provoking one - which also managed to entertain along the way.

Nothing earth-shattering in nature, but for sure, "Crazy Heart" is charming down-to-earth bill-of-fare.

I give it two thumbs up!

The Big Lebowski...screening @ the Hollywood Outdoor Cinema! Dudes, catch it July 25th...

The Dude translates well in the Romantic Languages, too!

Big Lebowski fans may want to mark their calendar!

On Saturday July 25th, the cult classic starring Jeff Bridges (the Dude!) will be screening at the Hollywood (almost free) Outdoor Cinema in Silver Lake (CA).

Parking lot turnstiles open @ 7:30.

$10 smackeroos a hot ticket.

Of course, I became a big fan of the Coen Brothers flick about eighteen months ago, when I started attending screenings at the INSOMNIAC CINEMA locally at the Regency Theatre in the Fairfax District.

All the hoopla and midnight madness (!) inspired me to log the festive events thereafter.

In fact, on the heels of the first raucous screening, I penned the 1st post on the subculture phenomena - and due to ongoing Lebowski-ite demand - the updates have persisted in their quirky madcap way to this day.

Las Vegas...cheap rooms! Summer of 1969 celebrations! Tropical heat wave...

As I breezed through the last stretch of the Mojave Desert and spied Las Vegas - a dazzling gem sparkling in the mid-day sun ahead - I was suddenly hit smack dab in the face with a tropical heat wave.

Whew!

I should have packed a cooler of Marguerite's!

No matter.

Soon, I would be firmly ensconced in my cheapie hotel room ($10 bucks a night!) and ready to take the big splash 'round town.

Sin-city lovers are trickling into town to catch the "Summer of 1969" celebrations underway at the downtown Freemont Street experience.

And, there's a bowling convention!

I expect Big Lebowski fans will be chomping at the bit to score a lucky strike on the lanes in the event they strike out at the slots!

I roared up to the Hotel a bit shy of check-in - at which point - the desk clerk informed me that my room was not ready.

So, I sauntered off to take in a few of the eye-catching sights.

As it turned out, Lady Luck was smiling on me right from the get-go.

When I called the newly-renovated Hotel about an hour later - the clerk noted that although a single room I requested was not made up yet - I was welcome to an upgrade (free of charge).

Would I mind a double-room with two Queen-size beds?

Heck, no!

The wheels started turning inside my mischievous little head.

I'd invite a couple of my friends over for a pajama party!

A few cocktails - and a pillow fight or two later - we'd head out on the town!

Of course, I'd have to dash into Mermaids for a deep-fried oreo or two.

And, line up for the scrumptious buffet offered up each evening at the Sahara, just a hop-and-skip away.

Maybe I'll take in - "The Lion King" - a big hit here right now in the desert playground.

I'll keep you posted, fer sure!

Big Lebowski...podcast up-and-running! The dude twitters...

For the past year, I have been reporting on the frenzied phenomenon of the Coen Brother cult classic, the Big Lebowski.

Fans just can't seem to gobble up enough juicy tidbits about the dude and his off-beat motley crew!

But, now there is a plethora of things lebowski at the Dude's web site, sure to satiate any die-hard fan!

Just a few weeks ago, for instance, two of the webmasters who actually maintain the "Dude's" homepage (Jeff Bridges) got in touch and informed me a Lebowski podcast was in the works.

Kewl!

Time to light up a doobie and celebrate, eh?

Especially now that a sweet-smelling updated "Lebowski" news flash just floated into my mailbox!

The Big Lebowski podcast site is up-and-running!

And, guess what?

The dudes are also following my own posts (& what have you) on the Lebowski "goings-on".

Big Lebowski...screens at Insomniac Cinema! Midnight! January 30th!

Urban Achievers

When "The Big Lebowski" screened at "Insomniac Cinema" a few months ago, there was a big turn out at the midnight show in West Hollywood.

Frankly, I don’t recall encountering such a boisterous rambunctious crowd of filmgoers descending on a movie house with such fan frenzy in recent days.

"The Big Lebowski" topped the "Rocky Horror Show" - for all-out enthusiasm - in my estimation.

In fact, at one point, the over-anxious crowd of young hipsters stormed the Theatre.

Yeah, when the usher’s back was turned - off refilling the popcorn machine, I guess - the gang of merry pranksters surged forward in a bold-faced effort to snap up the best seats in the house.

What rollicking fun - in spite of the fact I was nearly trampled in the long cramped hallway - on the way to Theatre No. 2.

Well, get ready for another round of boisterous rowdy conduct tomorrow night at the Regency Theatre in West Hollywood (Fairfax & Beverly) when Big Lebowski hits the silver screen once again!

"The Big Lebowski" is a Coen Brothers’ offering!

The hilarious comedy is the off-beat tale about a laid back, down-and-out guy, who goes by the moniker of "Dude".

His pals are a motley crew keen on bowling - so much so - they’re in a bona fide rag-tag league.

On the heels of a case of mistaken identity, the Dudereno (Jeff Bridges) gets mixed up in an intriguing scenario with a millionaire’s wife, a subsequent kidnapping, and a gang of wacko characters who spill out of the woodwork and pound on him without warning.

There’s a whole posse of zany characters in this movie - a gang of loser nihilists, a high-brow conceptual artist and her hired hands, and some white-trash thugs a little slow on the uptake.

The one-liners are real zingers; in fact, the best COEN gems to come down the pike in a long time.

In fact, they’re so choice and so memorable, that the filmgoers (who’ve obviously caught an infectious bug of some kind which compels them to take in each and every screening when it rolls around) are inclined to scream out the dialogue verbatim with wicked glee in sync with the characters on screen.

Dudes, there appears to be a cult following for "The Big Lebowski".

In fact, the film spawned a book with a forward by Jeff Bridges.

The hefty tome is rife with trivia, interviews with fellow achievers (Patton Oswalt, Tony Hawk, Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken), tips on how to Dude-ify your life, a Little Larry flipbook, a guide to the film’s locations, Lebowski Fest Highlights, and a lot of what-have-you.

And - did you know? - there’s a "Big Lebowski" Film Festival every year.

Check out the dudes below in Louisville (KY) at their annual event.

Dudelicious!

By the way, friends of Jeff Bridges who maintain his web site, recently e-mailed me that they intend to launch a scintillating PODCAST in the future for "all things" Big Lebowski.

Will keep you posted on the much-anticipated fan-appreciation tributes and opportunities to interact with the Big Lebowski gang!

'Til then, mark your calendar "Lebowski", for the witchin' hour tomorrow night!

See 'ya there, eh?
